      I wanted to be a Tech Support for my school district that I grew up into and this be an excellent idea to do Zoom Setups for teachers! I was actually inspired by TechSource for desk setup now Zoom setups is actually next level. I even got one for my own because I've been doing interviews and meetings through Zoom! I think all Tech Supports in schools should work on projects like this to help support teachers who are teaching from home and us Tech Support guys can come to their house and setup their Zoom setups. That be a project I take on but sadly I got rejected from one of my recent job interview. 😭

    I have a full respect for teachers. I honestly believe they should be paid more since they are helping build our future. Although college tuition is going up by 25% (way more than 2% inflation), I have a feeling teachers are not being paid in proportion to those costs unfortunately.

    • @tombuck
      @tombuck  4 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      It’s tough, but I appreciate your support! I’m grateful to be in an area that pays above average for teachers, but it’s still not what the private sector would offer.

    • @krakenjm6877
      @krakenjm6877 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      College tuition going up that high is also the reason that people are teaching themselves and not bothering with wasting time and money there. More and more companies are hiring without college degrees, students who haven’t gone to college generally show greater effort and work ethic, not to mention that self teaching means that you can go at your own pace and not be as stressed. Most people who self teach are teens which means by the time they exit high-school they will be far more prepared than people who go off to college.

    Tom, I went to thank you for all you do with the passion and enthusiasm you invest in your students and your TH-cam followers. You are so gifted and fun with the way you connect and engage your audience! I was an instructor with a Military Leadership School at Fort Carson, Colorado from 1998-2013. Our "Distance Learning Classrooms" were cutting edge for the time. We had two-way audio/video between students and instructors that were linked to other Classrooms throughout the Nation. Seeing how this technology has advanced and evolved through the recent years has re-ignited my interest in getting back into teaching after watching so many of your TH-cam video's in particular! I'm moving forward with this and starting to piece together my "hobby" home studio (for now) to explore where this might take me in the near future. I love all your videos!

My favorite part about all of this is that, if you have an idea for something, there's definitely a way to do it. I usually just takes a little creative problem solving, but it's always doable.

A nice workaround is to go to screen sharing -> advanced -> Content from 2nd Camera then switch cameras until you get to the ATEM Mini.

    One basic question I have is why the choice of a shotgun mic, specifically in your classroom? Is that to keep it out of your face? Like with the laptop fan at 100%, would that not be reduced if you had a dynamic mic on a boom or whatever between you and the laptop?

    • @tombuck
      @tombuck  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Thanks Andrew! I've honestly just always used shotgun mics to keep them out of the shot as much as possible. But I have noticed that whenever the mic is IN the shot, my students ask more questions about it and how to get good audio. So I've been thinking of trying different mics regularly to spur more questions.

      @@tombuck just teasing, Tom. God knows teachers everywhere would kill to have a setup like this. Unfortunately, my salary + where I live means that it would take a straight year of savings just to buy the MBP. Never mind the EOS R (another year), the RODE stuff (another few months) and all the other knick-knack paddywhacks. Yes i can scale everything down to half-way. Which means 1.5 years of savings and not going anywhere (easier since it's pandemic time, haha).
      Still, I digress. Really happy for you and your students! And like others said, it's so good to see educators being so well-equipped to deliver their best.

Tell him that he should upgrade or even better: help him upgrade! In the long run, you'll benefit with it... and you did a good thing. If everyone did that, this crappy world would be way better. ;-)

I've seen people talk about the gain on an interface but not their Windows settings on the 'Sound control panel>levels' tab and whether this is volume or gain. This comes to mind because I was just watching your "Do you need a cloudlifter" video and you talk about too much gain causing that hiss. @@tombuck Indeed! And we are the better for it. I am enjoying a sort of blurring of teaching and creative practice that became part of 2020 (and is worth stashing as a positive thread of COVID’s legacy). There is a luxury as a teacher of a creative/arts-making subject of space to explore, that not every teacher gets to enjoy, but I have seen brilliant practice emerge across all subjects that challenges preconceptions of teacher/student dynamics.
