Really wish there was an all-in-one solution that combined all the strengths of the slingstudio, the features of the ATEM and the lean small footprint of the yolobox pro. Great video as always

One more tip: use in-camera LUTS. I thought of this while watching your previous videos. With a standard studio setup where you can guarantee the same camera setup, do your color grading for each camera (and make all match) and then export (Davinci Resolve makes it easy) the in-camera LUT which shows the look via HDMI OUT. Now when you record to the ATEM, your resulting files are already color corrected. ONE LESS STEP to do.
Thanks for yet another great video! Super clear, very helpful! And, as always, the production of your videos in and of themselves (all the attention to detail in the audio, lighting, cuts, etc.) is really awesome!

@@aaronpk I’ve been speaking with them and there could be a way to do it. If you record in camera as well as your method, you could swap the clips out with the 4k versions after you edit the 1080p. I’m looking at that now with possibly buying the atem mini pro iso, 3x bm studio plus cameras and a bm multidock. Either way your video was very helpful. I have a eerily similar workflow to you right down to the editing process of broll
Nice! Yeah that's definitely doable, but definitely increases the amount of time it takes to edit. You have to copy the 4K video files onto the main drive, then swap out the clips in Resolve. It works fine, it just adds too many steps and I found myself not bothering to do that. What I'd really like to see is a device that can record at least 4 4K videos all together like the ATEM Mini ISO!
@@aaronpk yes there is but it’s the 4k extreme hyperdeck which is way over my budget :) but like you I want an atem which can do 4k recording. I’m stuck with the new solution I think because I want to maintain 4k. Thanks again for your insights. Great content.
Thanks! This is tremendously helpful. One final question that you didn't seem to cover. How would you modify this process if you were interviewing a remote guest? What tools would you use to bring their video into the ATEM with as high of a quality as possible, preferably in a way that doesn't require difficult setup for the remote guest.
Very useful information, thanks. Something that would be nice to improve: you have plenty of bad cuts where you quickly change to other words without finishing the previous ones.
Thank you for sharing, have you considered a sync generator to send a genlock signal to all the cameras each and have them all lock onto this master clock. So, all the cameras will always listen to the master sync and this will never cause drifting and makes editing very easy~ Cheers!
Awesome video THANK YOU. I can't find the section that you hinted at around 2:32 - is it a conscious choice to record in 1080, or is it just the limitation of the ISO Extreme? Again THANKS! Thanks to your videos and my GAS, I've gone from a pro, to an ISO, to an ISO extreme (and haven't successfully published one complete video in my spend spiral lol)
Hi Aaron, really love your contents even thought I just found your channel today. Quick question that I have in mind and couldn’t figure out. Could you please explain this to me? On your multivew, there is one box where it is a combination of your main camera and desktop screen layout beautifully put. How can you do that? I know atem mini support Picture in Picture but not like your customisable. Thank you again
Very helpful video, thanks a lot for that. I guess a lot of creators (me included) are reluctant to publish „just“ in 1080p - especially if one has just invested in a couple of nice 4k cams. But I guess here the old rule applies: Better (easily and efficiently) done than perfect (4k). :)
This was exactly my reluctance. I just tried an experiment of recording through the ATEM and realized how silly it was for me to assume my videos ever *needed* the 4K for “talking head”.
Just upscale the video to 4k. As long as your cameras output a fairly sharp 1080 or even 720, most people don't even notice. The other option is to use Black Magic cameras. It's an extra step when editing but when replacing video, it syncs much easier. Some people are predicting BMD will offer a 4k version of the pro and or extreme iso later this year or next. Maybe an updated constellation that includes the new features from the extreme. With the chip shortage I'm guessing it won't be this year though.
Just guessing but it appears that BMD cameras us programmable gate array chips, not custom gate array ROM chips. This is probably why their battery life is so horrible. The blanks for these cups are much easier to produce than custom silicon, and therefore MAY be more available.
Atem is great, but it is easy to get 4k footage from a ssd connected to a camera like the micro G2 over ethernet. Makes it easy to use the atem footage as proxies.
Great video. Question: do you have any recommendations for HDMI cables, splitters, etc? We're just getting into live streaming at work and have a limited budget, so don't wanna purchase the 'wrong' stuff.
This is so so good! I’ve just purchased the mini pro ISO! Can I ask, are you just connecting the atem directly to the computer via USB-C and then recording to a hard drive connected to the computer?
@@xanderneal There's no redundancy in that setup, but the "ISO REC" display on the multiview will start blinking if there was a problem. Usually I'm recording from a script so it's not a big deal if I need to re-record a segment.
all very nice, i would like to know what ssd you use, and the more in-depth workflow of how you use da vinci resolve multicam, you have spent little time in your video.
Hello Arron. I do have one question. I have a GH5 behind my teleprompter but it has a somewhat blurry not bad but noticeable blur on Atem multi view screen. How did you overcome this?
Hi Aaron, i am still learning my extreme iso, but i got a question! Is there anyway you quickly replace the original files recorded in camera using a non BM camera ? I learnt from the video the da Vinci resolve project you got at the end, but i do film video podcast and there are times were would be helpful to keep live cutted project :) thanks for your help!
Yeah you definitely can replace non-BM camera files later. I don't have a video that goes over it but photojoseph does! th-cam.com/video/CZpcvqOPAKo/w-d-xo.html
Good video with great info .. I do have a ? You talked about the links list and Affiliate links.. I would like to learn more on how to setup the Affiliate links with different places and what to expect to maybe make off them?. Good morning Aaron! Do you think it could be possible that you make a Brilliant Master Piece like this, but with your actual workflow? Now that you add several LUMIX BGH1... Maybe something change? Have a Productive and Healthy Day!
There will probably be a few changes now compared to this video, but I think it'll still look mostly the same. Part of why I wanted to make this video was to capture my current process and see how it might change over time. I'll definitely make an updated video once things finally settle down in the studio!
I see you have your multi view going into a Dell computer monitor. I’m using my ATEM for projects with 23.98p or 29.97p frame rates, but I find computer monitors don’t support those frame rates. Does that mean you’re ATEM project frame rate is always 59.94p or 60p? Or have you found a way to get a computer monitor to display frame rates lower than 59.94p?
Yeah it's really annoying. The cheap Dell monitor I have doesn't support the lower frame rate. I did find a more expensive one that does support it though. The other option is to get a frame rate converter to go out of the ATEM and convert to 59.97. I'm never buying this cheap monitor again tho 😂
I had this same problem and ended up getting a $159 UpDownCross HD. Couldn't really swap the monitor since I wanted one with a 12v input so I can integrate it into a custom case. Really wish more cheap consumer monitors supported low frame rates, though.
@@cletuswa And can you confirm the UDCHD allowed a computer monitor to display multiview, etc. from an ATEM that has it's system frame rate set to 23.98p?
I know this isn't the subject being discuss but I am frustrated with this problem: I have a canon 80d and I finally got it to output a clean hdmi feed, but I can't get it in my atem mini pro iso. Its has a usb connection to a PC. I have to keep this usb connection to the computer to keep the clean hdmi. I trying to use the 80d for the webcam in Zoom and utilize the PC like it a camera. Want to use the other camera feeds on the atem with my Zoom presentation How do I share my screen and use the atem program window in my Zoom. Confused??????????????
I've tried it a couple times but it hasn't made its way into my workflow just yet. One reason is I tend to edit from various locations, not just my desk, and it isn't terrible portable. So if I'm sitting on the couch I'm just going to use my laptop trackpad.
I am doing only real time video production, and eventually reply corrected in post if there's some issues with the audio. This kind of production takes a lifetime.
No, in fact I didn't use any blackmagic cameras in this video. The trick is everything is recorded in the ATEM, nothing is recorded in the cameras, so it doesn't matter at all which cameras you use.
Aaron, thanks for this installment. Good stuff! Question: how do you connect (cable) your computer screen into one of ISO inputs on the ATEM -- -- so that you can continue to use it ALSO as a computer monitor as well? Is this what you mean? (I have the ATEM Mini Pro ISO).
Yeah that is what I mean! If you run the HDMI cable from your computer's HDMI port into one of the inputs on the ATEM, then connect a monitor to the ATEM output 1, you can use the monitor as either the multiview of the ATEM or as your computer monitor using the "video out" buttons to switch.
Great video, I love the idea. I tried to buy your planner but Google won't connect us. Is that address correct? Can I get it on Amazon? Looking forward to the next video 😁 Brendan.

Great video Aaron! Given this workflow highly relies on the external drive, I have a question for you... have you ever run into or heard about an issue where the ATEM ISO won't record to the external drive when hitting record? I used my Samsung T7 one week to record a two hour event flawlessly, and a few weeks later that same drive won't work at all with the same ATEM. I've tried reformatting the drive, changing cables, factory resetting the ATEM, and nothing works. The drive light blinks but the ATEM record light never comes on despite the drive showing up on the multiview. I've seen others in the BM forums who have had the same issue with no resolution. Any thoughts?
It completely depends on the camera. Some (usually cheaper) cameras can't record and output HDMI at the same time, some can't output a different resolution than is recording, etc. So make sure you double check that feature in the cameras you're planning on using!
No, it should be pretty much silent except when you first turn it on, the fan goes full blast for a few seconds. If you're hearing a loud fan you should get in touch with blackmagic support.
I use almost the same process. But I already have my script that I use on my teleprompter. I upload that to TH-cam and TH-cam lines up my actual script to the time stamps. So not relying on TH-cam’s transcription.
That's good too! I've found I inevitably end up saying slightly different things than are in the script, or add an extra segment here or there, so my script in the teleprompter isn't totally accurate by the time the editing is done.
I’m running into some trouble with regular pc monitors not working with the atem mini. What monitors do work, and what is the term that i should look for to know is a certain monitor wil work? It’s something to do with accepting tv hdmi input. Thanks
I've had that happen too, although a firmware update for the ATEM Mini fixed it for a bunch of monitors that previously weren't working, so first make sure your firmware is up to date. Other than that, as far as I can tell what's happening is the HDMI negotiation is failing and they can't agree on a frame rate. Some computer monitors won't accept a 29.97/30fps signal at all. What's supposed to happen is the ATEM starts by sending that and then switches to 60fps when it fails, but that doesn't work every time for some reason. I think the safest thing to do is to look for monitors that accept 29.97/30hz input as well as 60hz.
What are best practices for export settings since in this case I am allready using Atem's h.264? Do you export as pro res? I imagine you dont export as h.264 or do you? would that keep it as is or doubly compress? Also, do you use proxy when your editing?
I do usually export as h264, and technically TH-cam does re-encode and compress it again, but it's perfectly acceptable to me. Ever since switching to Resolve, I haven't needed to edit proxy files. I'm usually editing only 1080 source files and my M1 Macbook can handle it all just fine. Occasionally I do add a 4K file for the main camera and it still handles it fine without making proxies. If I were doing all 8 channels as 4K then I would probably need to make proxies first.
If I am only using the ISO for post production and I do not need more than 4 hdmi inputs, is the extreme iso still the better choice and/or more future proof? I will ever use the live broadcast ability, only the synced recording. Will I ever regret to buy the pro iso over the extreme iso?
Other than the 8 vs 4 inputs, the biggest difference is the SuperSource feature in the Extreme. That lets you arrange 4 video sources on top of a background, scaling and cropping all of them. With the Pro, you can only scale/crop one video using the USK feature.
Do you not like the yolobox pro any more I literally just brought it based on your previous review but if the iso extreme is easier I’d want to go with that my use would be for editing vlogs podcast episodes interviews and basic yt videos ….. wat would You recommend?
I use the YoloBox Pro for livestreams when I'm on the road, but the ATEM devices are what I use in the studio. I wouldn't say the ATEM Mini Extreme is easier, but it is still the cheapest way to record 8 camera angles at the same time.
I am curious, this is a 27min video. If you had to guess how long it takes to write script, test the script, edit script, setup teleprompter, setup cameras, lighting, record, edit and upload..... etc etc How much time would that take 4 hours? 8 hours?
Generally it takes me about 10 hours from start to finish to make a typical video for the channel, but usually my videos are under 10 minutes long. Writing the script and editing the video are the parts that take the longest. Thanks to having the dedicated studio space, there is no setup time anymore. I checked my notes and this video also took 10 hours despite being longer than normal. Thanks to this process, the amount of time it takes doesn't necessarily scale with the length of the video.
@@aaronpk thanks for that feedback. Recording and Editing videos is only a part-time portion of my job. I felt that my workflow was too slow but your feedback has helped reassure me that it indeed takes time. I am looking forward to getting back into doing my videos on a more regular basis and finding a rhythm and workflow. I enjoy the channel all the way Australia.
I do video editing for my registered dietitian's plant based cooking demos. I told her when recording to start the stopwatch on her phone and to hit the lap button on the stopwatch everytime she realizes something is off and an edit is needed. This gives me a list of rough time stamps to go back to in editing saving me time from watching everything on that first pass.
Super useful description and workflow - a 4.9* video! And... I gotta say (in a way that's hopefully received as positive feedback): that side angle does not quite work for me as a general-purpose second angle and cover for jump cuts. It's too different so the transition there and back is disorienting, and it's sufficiently off-axis that using it for more than a couple of seconds gives an "I'm looking at somebody you can't see or reading a teleprompter" vibe. I'm not expert enough to know what the angle *should* be, and I don't think it's an angle you should completely avoid, but as your main second angle, I found it distracting. It could be as simple as the difference in expectations from seeing live TV performers who almost always turn to face the alternate camera. Just a thought...
I have atem mini pro HDMI SWITCHER. Sir, is it possible to view pre-view of all cameras and at the same time i get program out put for projector or LED video wall? As we are doing with video mixture. If not , what is solution. ? Atem extreme?
There isn't a good way to do this with the ATEM Mini, that's the limit of having only 1 HDMI output. The ATEM Mini Extreme has 2 HDMI outputs so you can use one for multiview and the other for program out.
The most underrated video on the internet.

It's not necessarily wrong, it's a stylistic thing. But I've started covering up cuts with b-roll in most of my newer videos now.
Very useful info.
Awesome & Thanks :)
THANK YOU
Thank you for sharing, have you considered a sync generator to send a genlock signal to all the cameras each and have them all lock onto this master clock. So, all the cameras will always listen to the master sync and this will never cause drifting and makes editing very easy~ Cheers!
Cause I don't have expensive cameras with genlock 😅
Awesome video THANK YOU. I can't find the section that you hinted at around 2:32 - is it a conscious choice to record in 1080, or is it just the limitation of the ISO Extreme?
Again THANKS! Thanks to your videos and my GAS, I've gone from a pro, to an ISO, to an ISO extreme (and haven't successfully published one complete video in my spend spiral lol)
All the ATEM ISO models are HD only.
Do you notice a lag when the final video? Thank you for your help!
No I keep the computer out of it as much as possible. I record to the drive connected to the ATEM which also lets me record all the angles at once.
Thanks! if there was an error or issue, is there a redundancy? And would an error pop up?
@@xanderneal There's no redundancy in that setup, but the "ISO REC" display on the multiview will start blinking if there was a problem. Usually I'm recording from a script so it's not a big deal if I need to re-record a segment.
all very nice, i would like to know what ssd you use, and the more in-depth workflow of how you use da vinci resolve multicam, you have spent little time in your video.
HI Aaron, is there a course in the UK for live streaming beginners? Thank you.
Thanks a lot!!
Hello Arron. I do have one question. I have a GH5 behind my teleprompter but it has a somewhat blurry not bad but noticeable blur on Atem multi view screen. How did you overcome this?
The quality of the teleprompter glass will definitely affect that.
@ thanks so much!
Good video with great info .. I do have a ? You talked about the links list and Affiliate links.. I would like to learn more on how to setup the Affiliate links with different places and what to expect to maybe make off them?. And is it ok with youtube to do this or do you need to do something special to be able to use Affiliate links? Thanks
@@aaronpk That will be AWESOME! Thanks Aaron! You're the best!
By the way; ResolveCon was FANTASTIC!
Now that blackmagic resolve studio has built in ai captioning, did you switch to that?
@@aaronpk Can you share a link to that monitor?
I had this same problem and ended up getting a $159 UpDownCross HD. Couldn't really swap the monitor since I wanted one with a 12v input so I can integrate it into a custom case. Really wish more cheap consumer monitors supported low frame rates, though.
@@cletuswa And can you confirm the UDCHD allowed a computer monitor to display multiview, etc. from an ATEM that has it's system frame rate set to 23.98p?
Hello Aaron. Question for you. Do you delay your mic input while recording?
Yeah, I set the input delay to match the cameras. I have to do that when livestreaming anyway so it's just the same setup
Hi there! Thanks for your video. Can you tell me whats the difference between that one and blackmagic mini pro iso? Thanks so much!
Great show, wondering if you use the speed editor? Thanks
I've tried it a couple times but it hasn't made its way into my workflow just yet. One reason is I tend to edit from various locations, not just my desk, and it isn't terrible portable. So if I'm sitting on the couch I'm just going to use my laptop trackpad.
Can I use or is compatible the ATEM 2 M/E Constellation HD with ATEM 1 M/E Advanced Panel??? Thanks.
I am doing only real time video production, and eventually reply corrected in post if there's some issues with the audio. This kind of production takes a lifetime.
Do you have a pdf file for your organizer that we can buy if we just want to take the same template and put it onto our own task management tools?
Yes actually! Here's the link! shop.aaronpk.tv/products/youtube-channel-organizer-pdf
Does the syncing only work with black magic cameras?
@@aaronpk A 'daisy chain' arrangement: PC to ATEM to monitor?
yeah exactly!
Great video, I love the idea. I tried to buy your planner but Google won't connect us. Is that address correct? Can I get it on Amazon? Looking forward to the next video 😁 Brendan.

Aaron, do you know about the Atem recording to Samsung T7, is it already made stable and is there limitation 1GB or no for stable recording?
That's very weird! I haven't had that in particular happen to me yet. I normally use the Samsung T7 and T5 drives.
@@aaronpk Glad you haven't but if you ever do, please do a video on how you fix it! :-)
Is it possible to record 4k videos on a memory card in a camera and simultaneously record the iso recordings in SSD?
It completely depends on the camera. Some (usually cheaper) cameras can't record and output HDMI at the same time, some can't output a different resolution than is recording, etc. So make sure you double check that feature in the cameras you're planning on using!
Aaron do you have any fan noise issues with the ATEM Extreme Iso?
No, it should be pretty much silent except when you first turn it on, the fan goes full blast for a few seconds. If you're hearing a loud fan you should get in touch with blackmagic support.
Thanks@@aaronpk I'm thinking of finally doing the upgrade from the Mini Pro.
It's a good time for that with the 20% off discount right now!
@@aaronpk yup. That makes sense.
@@aaronpk thanks a tol for the quick and thorough reply
👍
I do video editing for my registered dietitian's plant based cooking demos. I told her when recording to start the stopwatch on her phone and to hit the lap button on the stopwatch everytime she realizes something is off and an edit is needed. This gives me a list of rough time stamps to go back to in editing saving me time from watching everything on that first pass.
Great tip!
Hi
It could be a little shorter 🙄🙄
That's why there's timestamps!
make it yourself then, jeez, never satisfied, you just saw how many hours it took to make it 10 minutes, ungrateful
The ATEM Mini Extreme has 2 HDMI outputs so you can use one for multiview and the other for program out.
thanks for information......
