- Hands down one of the best trilogies of all time but I truly believe Toy Story 4 is worth the watch and isn't the cash-grab it was expected to be. In this video essay I want to explore Woody's character arc and why Toy Story 4 rounds it off in a satisfying and necessary conclusion.

I never understood why people didn't like this movie. Sure the ending of 3 was good. But i thought it as much more fitting for Woody to move on and to help other kids. I just don't think it ever sit right that he was with bonnie for the rest of his days. I feel like it makes sense for Woody and Buzz to be separated.
I think what makes this movie was hated because the creators really ignored everything that happens on the last movies
@@mrs.dollkillerExcept that they didn't. The reason people hate this movie is because it changes the status quo from what it's always been: they've all grown comfortable with Toy Story. It's a part of their childhood, and it had a good ending with 3 in Woody being passed down to future generations and the story repeating.
But life doesn't work that way, and they hate this movie because it kept going after the 'happily ever after' to show that, no, you can't just expect things to always be the same. People change, we grow, and sometimes we have to accept this and move on to keep living our lives.
The problem is, that most people don't like that message, don't want to hear the last part, so they come up with reasons to hate the movie when, really, they just don't want things to change.
Toy Story 5 is going to be fucking trash where the creators will ignore everything that happened in the last movies. Toy Story 4 was not.

I think a lot of people missed what this sequel was trying to prove. Sure Toy Story 3 was perfect, but we shouldn’t say it should’ve been the last one anyways.
Did we need a fourth? No. But did they do great at making it? Yes. Besides, it felt kinda right with making Wood move on.
@@judebaun9993 I agreed with the first part, but it had its reasons that made sense in terms for Woody to have a continuation in his journey.
It may have ruined our whole happy ending for the family to stick together, but Woody was much more than that. He needed to realize it in a certain way. Basically the story is good, and that’s my final take on it.

That’s right. Woody is the focus not him and Andy together. And Wood’s relationship with Andy isn’t the central relationship in the Toy Story Franchise, it’s his relationship with Buzz Lightyear. And this movie is about him and Buzz being ok with separating from each other for the time being.

What most don't realize is that the movies are called 'Toy Story' and it was NEVER about Andy or whichever owner Woody was with. In fact, you rarely SEE Andy in 1 2 and 3 and same with the fourth one with Bonnie. It is a deeper message about Woody moving on from the past and finding something HE likes. sure, he loved Andy, but it is seen he always had this... trauma, especially with abandonment. The fourth film was for Woody to finally be able to be free from himself and be with someone he loves (Bo). Admittedly, Toy Story 3 was also a great ending to the franchise and would have been a good ending, but the fourth film wasn't bad either.
And, for my personal opinion, I never liked Woody's other friends except for Buzz because in every other film, his friends literally abandon him even when it is SEEN he's right. Plus, when he is abandoned in the beginning of the fourth film, no one actually talks to him or makes him feel special. So, I like how he lets go of them, though I wish Buzz would have come with him. I mean seriously, they threw him off a moving truck, wasn't going to save Woody from Stinky Pete and the whole museum plot if it wasn't for Buzz, yelled at Woody for wanting to go back and show Andy actually cared, and THEN in the fourth film no one bothers to go look for him when he is missing, won't be supportive during rough moments, and don't show their friendship. Buzz was, from what I remember, the ONLY one to ever care for Woody and go look for him.
So, whether you agree with me or not, I personally think wasting our time and tearing other people down over a movie is immature, and if you think they should have ended at 3 or should have continued on are both understandable opinions. :)
Bo is a jerk to Woody though.
@@HungryWarden She also suffers with her own issues, but she knew to treat Woody right and never stopped thinking about him. Plus, Woody was sometimes in the wrong with that whole situation, but they usually worked it out together and wouldn't continue with their bickering (like some of the other toys like Mr. Potato Head).

This movie made it clear Bonnie isn't happy and Woody did everything he was obligated to do and he's been there for everybody so why can't he make a choice for once and chose something that would make him happy that doesn't mean everything was for nothing and it doesn't mean the toys stop being friends people forget that the toys know how to get around when they want to and they can find ways to communicate in the credits of toy story 3 Ken wrote a letter to the other toys so obviously they can keep in touch and find ways to see one another Woody is not lost not anymore to infinity and beyond
I was hoping that you'd talk about the scene with Woody confronting Gabby Gabby ready to kick the shit out of her for ripping his back open, because that scene is basically the moment where Woody has his epiphany when Gabs tells him that he's been there for both Andy and Bonnie through their ups and downs. The slow expression change on his face as he slowly lowers the pencil and when Gabby walks closer to him, signifies him slowly realising that the job is done. It's the special sauce.
I love that scene, honestly it’s a testament to the animation team at Pixar that they’re able to do some much in the facial expressions of the characters. I feel like you could dedicate a video to Woody and Gabby’s dynamic alone as there’s so much you could talk about but I loved your take :)
As Schaffrillas Productions put it, this is the Anti-Story film because it goes counterwise to everyhthing Woody learned about being a toy. But it wasn't done just to be a cashcrab by completeting bastardizing his character, but because its saying that toys should not only have value if they are loved by kids. Keep in mind, its not disrespecting the themes of the other movie, its more of adding on to them.
I think that Toy Story 4 is amazing! I absolutely loved it! I had the same problem everyone else did though. That is, that it really didn’t need to exist, but I’m glad that it did! Woody got the proper ending he deserved, knowing that he needs to move on from an owner who might have moved on from him. In the trilogy, woody has taught all of his friends to deal with the fact to be there for their kid. He has nothing else to prove, so he decided to move on and give toys away to new owners and continue on making children happy.
Of course it is extremely sad and hard to let go, but I feel like that’s the overall message of Toy Story 4. 3 was mainly to pass it on while 4 was to move it on and start something new. This is an important lesson for adults especially. This is a great sequel that didn’t need to exist, but had a clear message to end the overall Toy Story saga! 9.5/10 ❤❤❤

So refreshing to see some love for this movie. I honestly think it’s my favorite since Toy Story 2. 3 had some heavy emotional moments but retread a lot of the same beats from 2 narratively and felt kind of hollow as a result. It bums me out to not see people affected by the message of Toy Story 4 since I think it’s so powerful, people seem to think it’s a betrayal of Woody’s trademark loyalty when if anything I feel like it’s the perfect exploration of being loyal to a fault eventually becoming a detriment. Maybe other people haven’t experienced it, but seeing Woody realize his self worth on screen was exactly the kind of nuance his character needed. Loving people until the bitter end is indeed noble, but not if it comes at the cost of loving yourself. I feel like people really missed the point with this.
I would call Toy Story 4 and epilogue given that Bo Beep was never seen in Toy Story 3 and I see that as a good intention from Pixar and Disney probably because some people were disappointed Bo Beep was not anywhere present in Toy Story 3. The fact she got to do more than she did in the first two movies and made a grand return with a reason why she was not seen in the third movie was very clever and made a lot of sense. I do see some substance as to why Toy Story 3 would be the perfect ending. But given how tired I am of seeing people bash on the fourth film since it's been five years since it came out and the fact it deserves more credit and love says a lot. We see the characters one last time, we see Bonnie after the third movie, the opening sequence with Andy is incredibly faithful to the first three movies, we get to know other characters like Forky (and I like him), and the ending to that movie felt heartwarming and mature and I love the direction taken.
And hearing all those journalists calling out Pixar just for Woody leaving the group with Bo Beep is so bullshit. It's not like Woody was being a selfish bastard to all of them and Buzz. And the fact it's better to not jump to conclusions or any bandwagons from where I'm coming from says a lot.

@@grathem9789okay, the Buzz thing I agree with, I also hated how they reversed Jessie overcoming her trauma from being kept in storage by Al with Bullseye and Stinky Pete for so long when they needed Woody in order to get into the museum that made her afraid of enclosed spaces in Toy Story of Terror even before she overcame it by getting in the box she was perfectly fine with being in Andy’s toy box which is way more enclosed than the closet that she and the toys were in in Toy Story 4 where she was hyperventilating so long as she was with her friends and the stakes were low so they regressed her back even further than she was at the end of Toy Story 3 also her sitting around in the RV the whole movie is very out of character for her, from the first second that Jessie was first introduced to the screen in Toy Story 2 she was highly energetic and raring for adventure she wouldn’t just sit around in the RV while Buzz Lightyear goes on an adventure without her especially given how they’re relationship was left of by the end of Toy Story 3 but in regards to Woody’s choice at the end of the end of the movie, first of all Bo Peep is not a random person he hasn’t scene in 9 years, she is the love of his life, Bonnie playing with Woody during the road trip does not mean that she cares about him because she just played with him for 10 seconds because he was next to Forky. The clock did say that it was the third time he hadn’t been picked that week but he didn’t say it was the first 3 days he hadn’t been picked in a week, the last time we saw Bonnie play with Woody prior to TS4 was in Toy Story That Time Forgot which took place during Christmas and in Toy Story 4 she is going into kindergarten which means it takes place about 8 months after Toy Story That Time Forgot so for all we know in between Toy Story That Time Forgot and the week that Toy Story 4 is in ever since then Bonnie has often not played with Woody leaving him behind while she plays with the other toys and even when Woody is played with by Bonnie he is barley playing with so yeah, Bonnie doesn’t need Woody and probably doesn’t notice that he is gone, Woody made the right choice to go off on his own with Bo Peep and if Woody went back to Bonnie he would just be sitting around in her closet collecting dust and be miserable so his choice at the end makes perfect sense.

Also no, the only time we actually saw Bonnie play with Woody during those shorts and specials was at the beginning of Toy Story That Time Forgot, in Toy Story Small Fry she brought Buzz and Rex to Poultry Palace, not Woody it was clear that she was growing apart from Woody even then. No the time that Woody spent with Bo Peep does not outweigh that Buzz, Jessie and the others and I am not saying that it does. The toy story movies has always been about Woodys Journey in the first one he becomes selfish to selfless in the second one he learns he’s not gonna live forever in the third one he to learn to let go and now in the fourth one he learn that he can’t keep clinging to the path

For Woody at least, I definitely feel like they could’ve handled Buzz Lightyear better and Jessie could’ve had more screen time, I wish she came with Buzz to search for Woody as a couple. The whole series of toy story is woody becoming a father and mentor to toys for the purpose of Andy. Everyone’s development reached the peak of Toy story 3. Woody has been a main character throughout the series and it ends with him finding his purpose. Everyone else in the gang are happy for him and their situation.

I’d argue it makes sense, Woody wouldn’t played as much whereas with Bo, he is with the love of his life and has more of a purpose.

I disagree. I didn't like Woody abandoning his friends and family for someone he's only spent a day with, who is also really mean and condescending to him, because he's no longer the favorite toy (despite accepting that he's not going to be the favorite is literally his entire arc in the first movie.)

I'm sorry but big disagree. Toy Story 4 is the Last Jedi of the Toy Story franchise. Absolutely contemptuous and hateful of its own fans, an insult to anyone who cares about these characters and this story. Toy Story 1-3 are three nearly perfect movies and the third movie was the perfect ending to the series. Toy Story 4 is dead to me.

Toy Story 3 is mainly saved by the ending, but not nearly as good as Toy Story 2.
@@MediaLoverChris02 uh woody taught buzz & jessie himself toys were invented 2 make kids happy & this crap basically said it was bullshit. nobody would ever play with a stupid fucking fork over a real toy like him. he’d never leave buzz & his family. in 3 they both said whatever happened they were all gonna be 2gether 4 infinity & beyond & thats the way it shouldve been. they were all almost burned alive in it, held each other’s hands & accepted they were gonna die. he’d never leave his family

as an ending, it would work wonderfully, had the events leading up to it (meaning the whole movie) been different. bringing bo peep back was an amazing idea but the way it was executed was just horrible. coincidence after happenstance after serendipity. nothing happens for a reason in this film and nothing is worth the character assassination it sadly forces upon the beloved cast.
