@Rockotar: I really liked this video you made and I completely agree with it… but I have 2 things I’d like to add/note if that’s ok, and I promise it will make this video even better. First note I want to add, and this one is a bit silly, but during the scene where Buzz and the other toys were crossing the road under the orange cones, the two words that were said was actually “drop” and “go”, not “stop” and “go”, but that’s just a little thing I wanted to correct, nothing to worry about. The second note I have for you, abcs this one will really REALLY make this movie EVEN MORE meaningful after it’s said… if you look around on TH-cam, Google, Patreon, etc., you’ll probably find even more details on this… there’s a theory out there that Emily, as in Jessie’s original owner Emily, the one who donated Jessie in the first place, gets Jessie back, specially HER Jessie doll, kinda… more like her kid gets her doll… her SON more specially… Oh, heck with it… I’ll just spit it out… EMILY IS ANDY’S MOM…and there is a lot of detail that supports this, and one of those details is even in the first movie, the red cowboy hat Andy was wearing for the majority of the movie, because in TS2, after Woody’s arm rips, you get a better look at the hat. If you look at it, you’ll see that the white strip that goes around the hat is kinda faded, and during Jessie’s flashback of Emily, you see a larger version of her hat on her nightstand before it, along with the other stuff in her nightstand goes away, but when you see everything in Jessie’s box of donated stuff, the hat is nowhere to be seen, abcs you might think she might’ve decided to keep it for her kid, which in this case, would be Andy. So Jessie’s whole story goes full circle. I think I heard about this through Super Carlton Brothers on their video about Andy’s Dad. So, anyway, I loved this video, and I hope you have a magical day 😊😊😊
The visuals are way too good for 1999 The music is some of the best music I’ve ever heard The way they reuse some of the things we see earlier The fact that the toys are actually putting effort into not being seen The opening scene The emotional scene The comedy They characters are actually intelligent
@@SomeGuyWhoPlaysGames333 Feels like being robbed, yeah. I sold my entire LEGO collection, years worth of it for like $10 as a dumb kid. Now I see most of those sets go for $150+ each. Part of that was me wanting to grow up and buy video games instead.
What’s impressive is that they invented new characters (Jessie, Bullseye) and they feel part of the “Toy Story gang” despite being introduced in a sequel. That’s very rare with possibly Puss in Boots in Shrek being the only other one I can think of.
I can think of Yoda and Lando from the OG Star Wars trilogy and maybe the clones from the prequels. Davy Jones from Pirates? But yeah I can’t think of anything more than that, it’s a very impressive thing to do.
One thing my mom praised at the time it was new and I agreed with emphatically is that while Woody and Jessie in the TV show are implicitly love interests, the toys don't become a romantic couple after bonding and getting to know each other. That Woody doesn't break up with Bo and start a romance with Jessie - the thought probably doesn't even occur to him even if it did to some in the audience. Woody and Jessie wind up with a relationship more like a brother and sister, and it's Buzz that Jessie winds up with a more passionate romantic attraction to as hinted at in the end here and expanded on in the sequels.
Woody had completely forgotten his own identity and branding. He was complete opposite of Buzz in this sense. I feel a big part of woody's character is his complete acceptance of his identity as a toy. He thought the Woody's roundup stuff was cool but he didn't see Jessie that way even though the toys were literally made for each other. He knows he's a toy but has his own identity and choices
I must say the way Buzz stutters in his speech trying to compliment Jessie while she grins at him with her hands on hips is priceless, I never thought about it when I first saw the film in my childhood, but seeing it again after watching Toy Story 3 makes so much sense. It's funny how despite Buzz's intelligence to solve problems he is socially awkward as well.
I love that in the first movie, buzz’s arm comes off, but in the 2nd one, woody’s arm does, it really emphasizes that the roles are switched in this movie
Buzz even repeats a lot of Woodys experience experiencing him through utility belt Buzz not knowing he’s a toy: 1. That shot of Buzz staring at UB Buzz from the display stand bottom and the camera pans up from the boots up the face exactly the same way from Woody glancing at Buzz on the bed 2. Once UB Buzz starts rambling all his space talk, Buzz is now the one experiencing what he used to do at Woody with talking of Zurg and space protocols being loud 3. He yells “You Are A Toy!” At woody this time
@@Thomasmemoryscentral I think Buzz when He didn’t think he was a toy is exactly who Woody would’ve been if he ever thought he was a real cowboy or actually from Woody’s Roundup.
The thing I love most about Jessie's backstory, is that there are _no words_ (aside from the song lyrics of course). They explain her entire backstory using only visuals and a music score. Its the essence of "show don't tell."
My favorite scene is when Buzz goes “Somewhere in that pad of stuffing is a toy who taught me that life’s only worth living if you’re being loved by a kid. And I travelled all this way to rescue that toy. Because I believed him.” Which is already a punch in the gut, and then Woody retorts with “Well, you wasted your time.” Ouch.
@@liamweaver2944 I’ll admit, I like that part, too. Buzz basically applied Woody’s words of wisdom from the first film to himself when Woody initially refused to come home to Andy to live with The Roundup Gang in the museum in Japan. Needless to say, while Stinky Pete nearly convinced Woody about staying with him and the Roundup Gang in the Japan toy museum because they would be loved and adored, it would have been really worse for them. Given that museums have security cameras to avoid any kind of theft, this means that the Roundup Gang would have been forced to never move ever again. Of course, given his hatred towards children, Stinky Pete would have easily gone through with this but not his friends, serving this as an example of his extreme selfishness. However, he’s too tragic to be considered Pure Evil.
The Jessie backstory scene also perfectly sets up 3, where Andy forgets about all of his toys, because he changed. While woody had the same hope that Andy still cared about them, while he didn't for most of his toys.
From what I remember I think it was a misunderstanding, although the end result is still that he doesn’t give his toys enough attention anymore and that’s why they stopped being “Andy’s Toys” by the end of the movie. I could be wrong though, been a while since I last watched it.
True. Andy cared about Woody because Woody is a sentimental toy and Woody doesn’t understand that. I always thought Andy would pass Woody on to his kids like him and his dad, not some random little girl, not to mention Woody is a priceless collectible lol smh
Considering how troubled the production was for both of Toy Story 1 and 2, it’s incredible how the films turned out to be so much very well written and they are proof that even if you have a troubled production there is no excuse for a badly written story because Toy Story 1 and 2 had troubled production and they still were good. To give more context Woody’s personality was changed basically last minute where before he was almost the villain of Toy Story 1 were he voluntarily threw Buzz out of the window and Toy Story 2 was originally going to be a direct to DVD sequel because Disney thought that they could treat Pixar films like their direct to DVD sequels of the classics Disney films.
Meanwhile, Toy Story 4 scrapped 70% of the original plot and spent a year reworking it to become the worst Pixar movie, regress Woody, Buzz and Jessie beyond status quo, and destroyed everything the original franchise stood for since 1995
@@bumblebeegamerreal The saddest part is that they Rushed out The Incredibles 2 to give more time to Toy Story 4. It’s clear that The Incredibles 2 is on its First draft and in the commentary the animators talk about how they had to rush out every scene to get the movie released on time. If Pixar had given more time to The Incredible 2, it surely would have had time to flush out it’s characters and write a better villain.
@@davidbraccini4770 Yeah, but instead, Josh Cooley ruined everything including Incredibles 2 It was supposed to be a spinoff or non canon to the triology. It still focuses on Woody and Bo's relationship, but who knows how it could've been
Considering Toy Story 2 was rewritten in a single weekend and animated in 9 months is very, very impressive. I'd almost argue spontaneity like that results in better stuff.
Toy Story: Just because you’re not what you thought you were doesn’t mean you’re not part of a good thing. Toy Story 2: Just because a good thing won’t last forever doesn’t mean you shouldn’t still enjoy it while it lasts. Toy Story 3: Just because a good thing ends, it doesn’t mean that there aren’t good things ahead of you. Toy Story 4: Screw all y’all, I’m leaving and joining the circus with my girlfriend.
Pixar Fans: Why Toy Story 5? Pixar: MONEY! MONEYMONEYMONEYMOENYEMONEY!!! 🤑🤑🤑 Dreamworks fans: Why The Wild Robot and Dog Man? Dreamworks: Because we’re willing to take risks to see what works and what doesn’t while trying to entertain our fans at the same time
Pff, wow, I genuinely never even thought about how “Stinky Pete ends up with the worst owner he could have wanted” before. As a kid, I just thought, “oh no! Now he’s gonna get doodled on and look silly! Haha oh noooooo”, but… it’s not just that: after wanting to be appreciated for so long that his bitterness over nobody wanting to play with him shifted him into single-mindedly focusing on being admired as a perfect, pristine toy by hundreds of people a day instead, well. He finally *does* find someone interested in playing with him who’s decidedly *not* interested in her toys being perfect, mint condition specimens of their models. TS2 really *doesn’t* leave any opportunity missed or detail un-played-with, no pun intended.
@@BG12sofia Plus he has the company of at least one barbie, and probably more. The outtakes showed him chatting up two barbies and seemingly enjoying it.
He probably got a happy ending. Lotso on the other hand… well he was such a tyrannical dictator and worse than Stinky Pete, so of course he deserved his just desserts in the third film.
@@awesomedud3739 if your talking about story line in general yes toy story hits way harder then shrek. I find to like shrek for his personality and the way he grew up with ppl hating ogres
Another bit of genius in Stinky Pete's backstory is how understandable it is _why_ he was unsold for so long. In his show, he was the goofy/annoying comic relief character, and wasn't as cool, heroic or inspiring as the rest of the Roundup Gang. He wasn't the kind of person most viewers would aspire to be or tell stories about, least of all children, so of course he would be ignored while every Woody, Jessie and Bullseye went on to enrich someone's childhood for however long they lasted.
That's actually realistic. That's why in many current children franchises (like Disney) they design the main characters in a more marketable way. The Disney princesses are a prime example, why would a little girl want a Kristoff doll alone when Elsa is the most appealing and marketable icon of the film? I bet this started to become more common after the 80s when animated shows were just publicity for toys.
Yeah, Stinky Pete’s silly, hillbilly-like personality might’ve been the reason he was unsold for years, which made him even more insane and angry. Not to mention the fact that he was probably seen as less desirable to kids than the toys of more prominent characters like Woody and Jessie as a toy of the show's bumbling comic-relief character.
Even as a kid, I thought that Toy Story 2 just made Toy Story 1 better. I'm glad they made the sequel, because I don't think the franchise would be what it is today without it.
5:52 Finally someone said it!! I can't believe what Buzz was reduced to in the 4th film, I just can't wrap my head around how any of the people in charge thought it would be a good idea at all!
Ofc one would say that Toy Story 3 was the best movie in the trilogy, but Toy Story 2 remains the most unforgettable, enjoyable, and lovable one by far (at least imo). And Jessie was an amazing side character with lots of depth to her. Hell her backstory became the best and most memorable scene in all of Pixar...
Meanwhile, Toy Story 4 is an absolute mess by regressing Woody, Jessie and Buzz beyond status quo, and destroying what the Toy Story franchise has established for the past 20+ years or so
“For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son; so whoever believes in Him may not perish but have everlasting life.”-John 3:16 Jesus is the way to heaven. God bless you and have a nice day/night ✝️✌🏻
Toy Story 2 is probably the most underrated movie in the series, due to it being the more traditional of the sequels, with it not changing the status quo too much, but it was one my favorite movies as a kid, so I’m glad you are giving it some attention!
One thing that I love about the Toy Story sequels is that each one adds onto the world in a way that only applies to toys: Toy Story 2: toy collectors, toy stores, toys being put in museums. Toy Story 3: baby toys, toys getting donated/thrown away, destructive toddlers. Toy Story 4: antiques, broken toys, handmade toys, toys at carnivals. You cannot put these stories on a series not centered around toys, and that’s what makes the series amazing.
I'm pretty sure that Toy Story 2 was the first Pixar movie to give us the iconic "Pixar moment". Think about it. Up - First 10 Minutes Soul - Last 10 or so minutes Inside Out - Riley's Apology Finding Nemo - Barracuda WALL-E - Losing WALL-E Monsters, Inc. - Saying Goodbye to Boo Monsters University - The Lake Finding Dory - Following the Seashells Toy Story 3 - The last 20 minutes Toy Story 2 - When Somebody Loved Me
While still a bit of its time, it still blows my mind how good this movie looks for 1999. There's some excellent lighting, designs, and composition that look great and almost real today. And this is only 4 years after the first movie, it's remarkable how much they improved and how fast technology advances.
Yeah, the second film’s animation definitely holds up better than the first film’s. Also helps the world is expanded with Al’s Toy Barn and apartment, the street and the tri-county air port and there’s much more variety in the humans instead of just copy pasting the models like they did in the first film with taking Andy’s model and giving them different clothes and skin colors to be “his friends that come to his party” and also much more effects that they couldn’t afford in the first film.
Finally someone else who agrees that When Somebody Loved Me is the best scene Pixar has ever made. Most people usually just say its the first 10 minutes of Up
16:22 Actually something I noticed is that the climax did get made. In the scene where Woody is questioning his decision to go to the museum, the episode playing in the background is the finale. Prospector lied about it to manipulate Woody, Jessie, and Bullseye. You can hear Jessie thanking Woody for rescuing them in time, leading to the final scene of Woody singing “You got a friend in Me to the audience”; and then the series ends with the Round up Gang waving goodbye. That’s why when Woody turns on the TV and the first thing you see is the theme song play and the episode picking up where the last one left off.
The animation in the Toy Story movies holds up because the lower quality models and lighting looks plastic, which works for toy characters. The human characters were uncanny but the toys look fine
That's one thing I don't like about Toy Story 4. It looks too high budget. It loses part of the charm. Toy Story 3 also had this, but to a lesser extent. That was also just a better movie.
Toy Story 2 is the definition of how a troubled development turned into such a comeback for Pixar. Hadn’t Pixar faced the challenges that they did when producing this movie, they would not be the studio that they are today.
Even the 1st one’s troubled troubled production came out fine for Pixar. Woody being a stuck up jerk in no way needed to happen and Billy Crystal’s voice suited Mike in Monsters Inc more than Buzz but changing Woody into a more jealous type threatened with new toy in the room gives him a great character arc and Tim Allen is the more proper one to play Buzz
@@Thomasmemoryscentral I think Billy Crystal would agree with you. Despite having regrets turning down the role of Buzz, he later stated in an interview he wasn’t the right choice for Buzz.
I actually read the original script version they had written down before it got deleted along with almost the entire toy story 2, they had to do a completely different version(which is the one we know today) -In the Original planned Script, Bullseye was supposed to speak. -There was no Jessie in the original script. -The Roundup gang were not friendly in the original script. -There was a car chase between Al and the toys scene sequence in the original planned script, Woody throws Woody’s roundup merchandise at Al in the chase sequence, Bullseye saves Woody, Stinky Pete and another cut roundup gang member get taken away by some kids riding a bikes. -The Cut roundup gang member was a cactus named Señorita Cactus -Instead of starting off with Rex and a video game, Rex rather watches a tv show of Buzz. -Also sorry people but no Wheezy in this original script so no you’ve got a friend in me.
yeah i've Read the original script too it sounded great but i like what we ended up with also had bullseye spoke he was going to be voiced by martin short
I like that you point out that the whole thing starts out with Woody worried Andy won't play with him without his hat, which the others immediately reassure is not the case, and when Al finds him, he ALMOST PUTS HIM BACK, writing him off as incomplete and worthless, because he is not wearing his hat initially. He only carries on with taking him because his hat is found. It shows where the priorities are not supposed to be, and reinforces them by showing those are the things the villain is focused on.
The fact this movie had only 9 months to be reworked and turn out a masterpiece, while Toy Story 4 took a year to do it and destroy everything the franchise had established since 1995 astounds me. Toy Story 2 actually gave character development while Toy Story 4 regressed it. Very cumbersome
@@jaxsterminator8634 It destroyed everything by ruining Woody, Jessie and Buzz's characters into nothing and breaking the fundamental logic. Why did you think the Velma show got hated? Its because the characters became unlikable and their characteristics got assasinated. Same goes with Toy Story 4: Woody leaves Bonnie over her not playing with him for 3 days. Despite her CLEARLY playing with Woody in the movie, in the RV scene, he thinks Bonnie doesnt care about him. Woody's character was all about being loyal to his kid, and he didn't care about playtime. He cared about always being there for his kid. Didn't matter if it was Andy or Bonnie. Buzz became dumb, despite his intelligence in the past 3 movies where he made elaborate plans to save Woody. Buzz relies on his buttons in the 4th as his "inner voice" despite him understanding what those buttons do in the past 3 movies. Jessie stayed in the RV, while Buzz tries to save Woody despite being quite adventurous and always tags along. She also was hyperventillating in the closet despite overcoming her phobia in a Toy Story short. Besides that, it ruined logic and some things dont make sense like the light shining randomly on the floor that made Woody go inside the antique store. The driveway in the introduction existing, despite never existing in the three movies.
People use terms like “destroy” too loosely. Just say you dislike what they did and move on. Toy Story 4 was still critically acclaimed even if I personally didn’t like it as much. And I’m a diehard Toy Story fan lol.
@@bumblebeegamerreal your first point about Woody leaving Bonnie is the whole point of the film. Woody’s almost religious devotion to children was central to his character in the first 3 films. But it was time to break that dogma and evolve his character. It is the realization that it doesn’t have to be him specifically that’s there for Bonnie. And he doesn’t need to be the one organizing all the toys. He realized that the toys with Bonnie can survive without him (unlike where he was the leader in Andy’s room). Yet, Woody knows that would be unfulfilling for him to stay in a closet and not lead AND not be played with. And maybe he deserves a little bit of his own happiness, and that it’s possible to do that without a kid. Woody has always been this dutiful character. And he goes out saving this random spork knowing that spork is to Bonnie as Woody was to Andy. He probably would’ve stayed with Bonnie if he didn’t meet BoPeep living her own best life without a kid. It burst his bubble that his sacrosanct idea that he is duty bound to kids is not the only way to live.
@@marcusstrinidad no gtfo of here. Toy Story 4 absolutely destroyed everything the other movies established. You are not a diehard toy story fan if you're unable to see that. Be quiet.
I was just talking to my brother the other day about why Toy Story 2 was the best out of the movies (it almost tied with 3) and I couldn’t explain why I love it so much and this video puts the words I can’t say together perfectly.
I'm surprised you didn't mention Mrs. Potato Head. I mean I get it, she didn't much for either story but much like Emperor Zurg and Al she was a character who was only mentioned in the first movie not to mention she adopts the three eyed aliens at end and the sad that Don Rickles and Estelle Harris are both gone
The Potato Heads became 2 of the most iconic supporting characters and having them mute for film five is sad thinking of that because I highly doubt Estelle Harris has a bunch of old unused lines and commercial recordings to cobble dialogue for Mrs Potato Head. You can pull it off for Don Rickles based on luck but repeating it isn’t working a second time
This movie was my childhood! I don't know how many times I watched it and the Jessie backstory scene still makes me tear up! Like you said Toy Story literally made me rethink about my toys and how they must feel when I don't play with them or give them away. Great video on a great movie!
That scene still makes tear up the music was perfect and it shows that kids grow up and move on to other hobbies and stop playing with toys and give ‘em away I still play with old wwf figures from 2000 and 2001 I’m 23 and still play wit them I could never stop I wonder how they would feel if I didn’t play with them anymore ever since I saw Jessie’s backstory it always made me tear up
I'm not saying Pixar will or even SHOULD make a Toy Story 5, but if they ever decide to do so, I'd like to see Stinky Pete return. He'll return as a sort of anti-ANTI-hero. He starts off as kind of a bad guy who honestly doesn't like Woody and the gang all that much for obvious reasons. But towards the middle of the film, Stinky Pete starts a whole new ark. The fill-in from when we last saw him is of him with that little girl. He probably absolutely hated it at first. But as the years went on, he found an appreciation for that young girl. Maybe he wasn't played with how most "boy toys" would be played with, but he still felt the love and affection that Woody spoke of. With that new perspective that he has now fully experienced and come to understand, maybe he could be of help to the gang. (Also, I like the idea of Stinky Pete coming back, but he's got lots of smudges on him and has clearly been drawn on.) Finally, what if Lotso Huggin' Bear came back again? Okay, so picture this: Bo Peep and Woody decide to visit Buzz, Jessie and the other toys for Christmas or something. That's how the plot starts. As the holiday continues, they hear talk of a toy that sounds an awful lot like Lotso. A plushy bear that smells of strawberries. Initially, the toys just want to leave it alone and want nothing to do with him. And that's how it will stay for a little bit of the movie. All the gang can agree that Lotso is a bad egg that's been cracked. However, purely by coincidence (or something, I don't intend to write a full fanfic here), the toys come across Stinky Pete. The very same. Out of his box and has CLEARLY been played with but has since gone on to be a lost toy when the girl had no more use for him. To the toys' surprise, he has an entirely new world view. Don't get me wrong, I reckon he'd still be a little bit bitter. Kind of like an angry old man. But he can at least now understand Woody's viewpoints. Stinky Pete informs the toys of whatever Lotso would have been getting up to. In return, the toys allow him to stay for just a little bit. Along the way, Woody, Bo, Buzz and everyone else delve into Stinky Pete a little bit more and in-turn delve into Lotso and the psychology of these kinds of toys. The ones that never had exposure to love and the ones that had it and lost it. When the toys eventually somehow do confront Lotso (I don't know, like I said, I'm not here to make a whole plot), Stinky Pete might be able to redeem himself by trying to get through to Lotso and relate to him on a personal level. Lotso might consider it briefly, but ultimately goes against it, showing he hasn't changed like Stinky Pete has. For the first time, we might be able to see one of the many ways a toy can actually DIE. I think it would be a good idea to give Lotso a grim fate, to actually KILL him off. We've never really seen a toy properly die before. We've seen what they can become, but never die. Anyway, Lotso dies and Stinky Pete redeems himself. It's essentially a story about ALL of the things that the toys have come to learn. It gives a redemption ark for Stinky Pete (since I reckon he can be redeemed) and it teaches a lesson that there are people like Lotso out there who will simply never change. Not because they can't, but because they don't want to or can't be bothered to make the change and consequences arise because of it. It delves into themes of what more there is than just being a toy for kids, expanding on the themes of (dare I say it) Toy Story 4 about how there is more for a toy after giving up on being there for a child. Heck, I think it'd be cool to see Sid come back as a character and actually INTERACT with the toys. Since he knows that the toys are alive, I think it would be cool to see Sid briefly help the toys out to see how he has changed. Maybe he could run a small workshop where he restores toys and stuff! (Yes, I know he's a garbage guy in the 3rd movie, but come on. A guy can have a hobby.) I think it'd be cool to see his creativity from the first movie and repurposed into skills on how to restore toys. Toys like Stinky Pete. Anyway, those are my ideas for a Toy Story 5 if they ever make one and how to actually make it MEANINGFUL and brings all the movies full-circle by bringing back old characters and making them new. Much like Sid might do in his free time.
@@jolo6051Wow that’s a very good idea. I hope Pixar does Toy Story 5 good, I’m half convinced it is being made in response to criticism of Toy Story 4.
whats probably gunna happen: jessie (or whoever idc): ohh nooooo hes goonnnn now time to save him! and they try to save him, ultimately finding their own tomantic interest and running off to be with them lol
22:13 "sometimes it takes us feeling the consequences of making the wrong choice for us to realize that it was the wrong choice" Wow that is deep. And actually good insight too.
When She Loved Me always manages to make me cry, something about it just tears me up. Also, it’s mentioned in the song, but when Jessie’s old owner finds her again, she does smile remembering their times together, but Jessie mistakes it for the love she believed her owner still had for her and wanting to play with her again.
Well in the scene with sleeping Al, we're supposed to believe Pete framed Jessie into looking like the one who turned on the TV, but thats bull because we've seen that toys still have awareness even while frozen and its hard to believe Pete put the controller infront of Jessie without her noticing
One clever detail i noticed is that Al doesnt truly get excited about woodys value in the yard sale until he finds woodys hat, implying its rare to find a woody doll with his hat. And, when you look at the first 3 movies, he very easily looses his hat in the 3. Not sure about 4.
Imagine if Woody didn’t have his hat on him when he went down to the yard sale to rescue Wheezy: Al: “If only you had your hand-stitched polyvinyl hat. So close to finding that rare Woody doll.” *puts Woody back down on the table. Miss Davis notices Woody* Miss Davis: “How did Woody get down here? Better put him back up on the shelf.” *Andy’s toys watching from window* Buzz: “Phew. Thought that guy was going to take Woody, but at least Woody will be back safe in Andy’s room when Andy gets home.” *roll credits*
yeah as a kid i owned this one jessie doll it was notorious for losing its hat then one day i lost the doll but found the hat you can imagine how much i cried that i finally had a hat but no jessie :(
I think one of the great story beats that TS2 hits hard with is "What happens when the things you're nostalgic about just become crap sitting on a shelf?", and how do we deal with that as humans, and how might the toys deal with that as 'the crap'. It's just so upsetting, because I remember clearly as a child in the early 90s receiving some plushy toys from Disney World and thinking how cute they were, and how lovely it was to cuddle with them in bed.... But also I just got this thought in my head about "The toy looks so adorable, but what happens when I'm a grown up but the toy still has the same face? Do I feel 'sad' for the toy? Where do toys go? Someone once made this, some creator once had this, no matter how temporarily, as the most important thing in their life... but now it is a bit a fluffy plastic I don't want." I felt immense guilt towards the toys I no longer liked or wanted... And TS2 brought that all to the surface so much. But then TS3&4 were based solely around this mawkish idea, so I snapped out of it. :)
Fun Fact: Toy Story 2’s entire movie almost got deleted and started from scratch, but someone had a spare backup file, so they wouldn’t need to start completely over again.
In general a sequel is in the best position to make a good movie. The world has all been established by the previous movie so now you get to go on an adventure in that world that is not bogged down by world building. Also, seeing the results of the first movie being made permanent is also really cool. Seeing Buzz (who was a little stupid and out of his element) being the pseudo leader in Woody's absence was really amazing.
Another nice detail is for most of this sequel, Buzz clearly is more comfortable having his helmet off meaning he’s settled into accepting of being a toy for a long time
I think the greatest scene in pixar history is the gang going in the incinerator because that’s what the Toy Story movies have always been about, not being there for your kid but for each other 😢
I may not hate the fourth film, but I do feel like the downside to that film is now it slightly damages the incinerator scene in TS3. Before 4, the scene actually felt very intense and dire for the toys and you almost felt like they were about to die, especially since we’ve gotten to know and fall in love with them for 2 films prior and the moment they accept their inevitable death by holding hands and closing their eyes is powerful. That’s why it made the scene where the Aliens rescue them with the claw much more of a surprise and a great moment of relief. Unfortunately, now with the 4th in existence, the incinerator scene doesn’t feel as intense or dire anymore for the toys or the viewers feel relieved when they’re rescued just when they’re seemingly about to die and there appears to be no escape because now you KNOW they’re going to make it out alive in the end. It’s even worse for a first time viewer watching the films because now they KNOW with the 4th film following afterwards they’ll make it out ok, thus lessening the fear and sadness you felt for the toys in that moment.
For some reason I found the sound effects of this movie really satisfying as a kid. from the intro of buzz walking on the floating platforms (the little whooshes) to the sound of zurgs ball gun (the little pops) to even the footsteps (and then all the sounds from the woody being repaired montage) I know this is a random thing to point out about this movie but its honestly really underappreciated (this is even weirder considering I don't pay attention to sound effects in most movies)
Actually, since Paddington 2 got a negative review, now out of all of the movies to get a 100% in Rotten Tomatoes, Toy Story 2 has the most reviews, technically making it the greatest movie ever made according to the site.
Okay it turns out that I was wrong and it’s actually second to some movie called See No Trace. But still, it’s the second greatest movie of all time from one of the most well known movie reviewing websites ever against thousands of other movies. That’s impressive.
Toy Story 2 foreshadows Toy Story 3, with the toys being "ruined, forgotten, spending eternity rotting in a landfill" (and yes i know they get saved but it's clever how well these movies go together)
one thing i was carly impressed by was the direction of the movie. i was actually rewatching it today and i never realized how brilliant the he direction is. i want to specifically point out the transitions. they really helped sell the movie in the way they can be both funny and beautiful by moving the story along in seamless and fun ways. the way buzz gave his speech to make sure the other toys don’t give up and american flag starts to show up behind him. and then cut to black and white because it’s showing that it’s the tv now it transitioned to woodys storyline where al is asleep watching tv. like it made sense to out the flag behind buzz as he’s giving this soldier esque speech and then keep the flag but change to black and white because now it goes to woody because they are on the mission already to rescue woody. just so genius. and even the way emily plays with jessie and the way emily plays with her and the transitions occurs as she’s playing with jessie. revealing her backstory in such a beautiful heartbreaking way. and the way the transitions just show that fun that they had to then the loss that jessie experiences as she’s soonest forgotten, every just sort of vanishing now. this movie just had so much love and thought put into it. you can really feel that child like entity within this film by how it was made and told. that sense of wonder we all dream of recapturing from our youths was truly captured in this film.
Toy Story 2 might as well have been on continual repeat in my house when I was younger for the amount of times I watched it. I was a big Buzz Lightyear fan, so all that Buzz-centric action was what made me prefer it to Toy Story 1 at the time, but it is one of those glorious films that just gets better as you get older. On my latest rewatch, I was struck by how much actually happens in it, but despite that it never feels like it's overpacked or too busy. As you said, nearly every scene is so iconic. Great video. (Also, I have never watched Toy Story 4 and never plan to, so I'm... not glad as such, but feel validated by your opinion of it that I'm doing the right thing. Kinda like Lightyear though, but that's only because I chose to believe that the opening card that says it's the film Andy saw isn't there. In my head, it's a reboot/reimagining.)
About the whole thing with two Buzzes, a nice touch is that Utility Belt Buzz has the helmet on but the main one doesn't. This is great, because it is significant enough to show which one is which but subtle enough to not draw attention to it.
I have loved Toy Story 2 since I was super young. To me it’s the best sequel and best movie ever; it is seriously perfect. Also thank you for bringing up that they made Buzz so stupid in Toy Story 4, I still have not gotten over it.
I think the whole story of toy story 2 is actually pretty clever because it conflicts with how kids grow up over the years and as someone who loves action figures despite being an adult I can sympathize with woody's interaction with stinky Pete yes kids grow up and stop playing with toys but as long as they're kids they'll enjoy it till the very end also is no one gonna talk about the scene where woody is being repaired? That was gold
I would still have to say that the Married Life scene in Up is the most famous scene in Pixar's lineup, and perhaps their best scene period, but Jessie's history scene is also iconic. And the Finding Dory car chase *wishes* it had the magic that Toy Story 2's has. Toy Story 2 is an excellent sequel and an excellent movie, indeed. I have fond memories of watching it when I was younger, and since then I've heard stories about how the whole movie was almost deleted and that the team was lucky that they had a backup off-site - we're fortunate that this movie exists at all and that it turned out as good as it did. Anyways, great video!
I hadn’t noticed that Stinky Pete never going out of his cage means that he is more valuable since he is like new and unused which is valuable in collections.
16:12, I'm not entirely convinced the final episode wasn't made. At the part described at 22:05, audio can be heard from the TV of Jessie saying in part "Sheriff Woody, I knew you'd make it!" followed soon after with Woody singing, which confused me years ago since I'd taken Pete's word for it that the final episode was never made, but it works well into his manipulation to get his way toward getting to the museum.
I used to watch Toy Story 2 religiously as a kid. I watched it so much, I couldn’t wait until Toy Story 3 was coming to theaters, and I was only 6 years old. Yet I always loved Toy Story 2 and felt it was the best one of the 3 (at the time). I still think it’s a perfect movie
Another great video. Even as someone who has watched this movie so many times, you’d still brought at some really good points I did not fully consider. While not perfect, Toy Story 2 is one of the greatest animated movies and sequels of all time, which is especially impressive considering its troubled production. Even thinking about Jessie’s backstory in this movie makes me emotional. It is just such a powerful scene. I’m looking forward to the next vid. I also do feel solace hearing that you are not a fan of Toy Story 4 because I too feel very negatively towards that movie. I know it has its fans and I will say to them that I’m sorry but I am not a fan of that movie at all.
This is a fantastic video summing up why Toy Story 2 is my favorite Pixar film. I still love films like Incredibles, Up, Wall-E, and Soul to pieces, but this one is still at the top for me.
Didn't even have to watch to agree TS2 expands the universe Has it's own themes and adds upon to the original movie's characters. Can't explain why it's so good myself lol
24:05 I like also that it was sci-fi movies that cancelled woodies roundup, and then its buzz who is a sci-fi character who takes stinky Petes dreams of the museum away
Growing up, my dad was a toy collector and dealer. Some toys were *extremely* valuable, especially mint in the box. Being part of that world adds an extra dimension to the Prospector's character and perspective. Because at the end of the day, he's actually not entirely wrong in his sense of superiority about having stayed in his box. His exiting of the box to stop Woody from leaving is a genius moment in light of that.
26:26 I wasnt paying a lot of attention to the video, and it took me 3 rewinds to figure out he's said "except four," not "except for." I actually yelled "except for what? What do you mean!?"
Wow, what a fantastic video! I gotta say… I fully agree on the fact that this is one of the greatest sequels ever made. I think Majora’s Mask might win my personal #1 spot in terms of sequels but this movie is easily in the top 10, maybe even too 5, alongside Empire Strikes Back and Captain America: The Winter Soldier. I’ve spent a long time thinking about these four Toy Story movies, and my favorites have swapped around a lot. As a kid, my favorite was 1. As I grew up a bit, my favorite became 3. 4 was never quite my favorite, but I’ve really come to weirdly appreciate the message they were putting forth with that movie, about how it’s okay to put yourself first sometimes and follow what’s truly best for you, as opposed to feeling trapped in obligations and responsibilities that you may not need to keep. I still hate what they did with Buzz in 4, but I like pretty much everything else. Anyway, it’s taken me a long time, but at this point, 2 is definitely my favorite of the four movies. It captured my imagination as a kid, and now that I can understand the deeper subtext of the film, it’s captured my heart as well. I’d explain why, but you’ve pretty much laid it all out there in this video. The ONE sin I will give this movie is that the joke that Mr. Potato Head would commit infidelity when away from his wife (at Al’s Toy Barn) is really in poor taste and should have explicitly been shown as wrong, but other than that, it’s seriously a flawless movie. Also, this movie was the main basis for a lot of the sandbox content in the Toy Story 3 game for the Wii, with all the wild-west, Woody’s Roundup stuff making up a large portion of that game. Seriously, check it out if you get the chance, it might be THE best movie tie-in game of all time, it’s super solid and a lot of fun.
Fun fact, there's a city near my home town called "Butte," so my family and I found that joke really funny because it's a real place we've actually been to.
I had no idea why, but as a child, Toy Story 2 was my favorite. So thanks for pointing out all of the good stuff in words that I couldn’t explain myself ^_^
SUBBED FOR THE EARTHBOUND MUSIC Oh, and the incredible analysis. You have so many great points, and your editing is perfect. I’m also a small video essay TH-camr (although considerably smaller than you haha) and I love seeing other small channels create such awesome content. Cant wait to see what you do in the future, dude! Subbed.
The animation and soundtrack are also top-notch, with the film featuring many memorable and emotional songs. The film also features an amazing cast of voice actors, including Tom Hanks, Tim Allen, Joan Cusack, Kelsey Grammer, and Don Rickles. All of these elements, combined with the heartfelt story and stunning visuals, make Toy Story 2 one of the greatest sequels ever made.
There was an essay on a film theory website many years ago. I wish I knew who the author was or where to find it again, because it was delightful. It compared Toy Story 2 to St Augustine's City of God. Woody's core dilemma was that he could choose to be perfect forever, without love or experience, or he could choose all the messy imperfections of living. The essay worded it better, though, and I always wanted to read more about St. Augustine.
im glad the algorithm gave me this video. Someone said this movie was the worst toy story movie because "almost the whole thing was just woody held up in some guys apartment" and it didn't have enough different locations. I died a little inside and wondered if we watched the same movie. I'm subbing and would love to hear you rant about lightyear. 👀
I was born the same year as Toy Story 2, it this film does hold a special place in my heart. In fact I often flip-flop between this and Toy Story 3 as my favorite Toy Story movie. I just think they're both great!
God bless the TH-cam algorithm for recommending this in my related tab. I saw the title and was like "And I thought I was the only one that thought this!!!" You hit on all the hallmarks as to why, and I salute you.
I appreciate that someone finally says that pirates of the Caribbean on stranger tides is a good movie because even though not having nothing related to William Turner it still handles very well the story of Jack Sparrow. Many people take issue with the ending because Jack doesn’t get the Black Pearl back, but that it is because the original ending, were it was implied that Jack could have easily broken out the Black Pearl out from the bottle and was just about to free it since why would it even be promised as a reward if he couldn’t get the ship back in a simple way, was retconned by Dead man tells no tales were Jack wasn’t able to get the Pearl back and got it back only thanks to Barbossa.
That wasn’t retconned; What do you expect? If the ship was captured by Black Beard, then obviously it would be no easy way other than through him and his sword to actually be able to free it. Angelica was Bribing Jack because she genuinely Knew that he could help them and would be motivated in helping them and Jane we thought that in exchange Blackbeard would give him the pear And did not expect Blackbeard to die etc.
@@SuperMoviemaster21 Blackbeard would NEVER give back the Pearl to Jack even if he helped him, he was antagonistic to him the whole time and made him perform stunts that almost killed him. Angelica perfectly knew that and that’s the reason why she bribed Jack in secret and she wouldn’t have bribed Jack Sparrow in the first place with the Black Pearl if it to be freed it would have required Blackbeard’s magic. In the world of Pirates of the Caribbean it was always extablished that the pirates knew many people who could use magic hell even Blackbeard says that his quartermaster can see though the future, in the second and third movie there was Calypso who imitated a human magician and even in the terrible fifth movie Barbossa has to visit an other magician movie to decide what to do. There is no excuse for Jack in the fifth movie for Jack not getting back the Black Pearl. Even in the ending of the fourth movie he was very confident that he could have easily have gotten back his ship and even if he required Blackbeard’s magic there is still absolutely no excuse for him not asking Barbossa since he helped him a lot in the fourth movie and he surely would have given back the Black Pearl since Barbossa has the better Blackbeard’s ship and that’s exactly what happens in the fifth movie where he gives Jack the Black Pearl for free and even in the first movie Barbossa was willing to give up the Black Pearl to Jack Sparrow for a small fee of 20% for every pirating act and in exchange for the admiral British ship. And if you are telling me that Jack is afraid of paying that fee and prefers a small ship with wich he has no success, that is still incredibly dumb besides he is even suprised in the fifth movie that Barbossa could free his ship so he wasn’t even considering as an option to ask help to Barbossa because he doesn’t think he can help him despite knowing that he has Blackbeard’s powers making Jack Sparrow again incredibly stupid. In the end Jack Sparrow being so dumb for not getting back the Black Pearl and himself giving up the Compass knowing full well of the curse is basically a character assassination because in the first four movies Jack Sparrow was the most intelligent character who faked being dumb while in the fifth movie he is actually dumb. Of course the writers of the fourth movie knew fully well that Jack Sparrow is intelligent because he is in character all throughout the movie while the writers of the fifth movie think that Jack Sparrow is stupid because he acts in a stupid manner all throughout the film so I am pretty confident in saying that Jack not being able to get back the Black Pearl easily off screen is a retcon that character assassinates his intelligent character.
@@davidbraccini4770 Well, to truly think critically about it, Captain Jack did not want to take the risk of asking Barbosa, even with all that you said, As the movie itself shows that Barbosa took over the pearl once again even though he already had that supposed Better ship you stated. He probably initially had that confidence, but after a while of trying things out, realize that it wasn’t able to work out, and among other things just simply gave up, with all of this attributing to why he was acting so out of character; even for someone as crafty as Captain Jack, eventually we all have a breaking point Where it just drains so much out of us, and unfortunately has us make poor choices. At least when you take into account all of this it actually makes very natural sense no matter what no matter how otherwise it may seem
@@SuperMoviemaster21 First of all the reason why Barbossa took the Black Pearl was because in that moment he was trying to deal with recently resuscitated thanks to Jack Sparrow captain Salazar, who had captured and clearly not sank Queen Ann’s revenge since the ship was speared, and once Salazar would have been defeated if Barbossa would have still been alive he would have returned to Queen Ann’s revenge and even if it was destroyed offscreen, wich is unlikely since the ship was spared and Barbossa made a deal with Salazar, he would have built a new cursed ship with his magic like The Queen Ann since The Black Pearl wasn’t fully a cursed ship and he clearly would have given back the ship to Jack since they don’t have any hostilities anymore and have been allies for two movies. Hell worse case scenario for Jack he has to pay a 20% fee to Barbossa. Second of all Jack didn’t even think it was possible for Barbossa despite having Blackbeard’s power to get back the Pearl so he didn’t ask Barbossa to free the ship because he was too dumb to figure it out wich character assassinates him. And if he knew that Barbossa could help get back the Black Pearl but doesn’t out of pride (Despite the Fifth movie showing Jack suprised that Barbossa can help him) that is still dumb and a character assassination because instead of getting 80% of a big treasure he gets 0% with a small ship as shown in the fifth movie. And again it’s ludicrous that Jack Sparrow couldn’t find a magician that could help him take back the Black Pearl, like the one that Barbossa goes to in the fifth movie, and this makes him retroactively dumb and stupid in the fourth movie, therefore character assassinating a previously very intelligent character, for accepting Angelica’s offer without asking how to get the Black Pearl back and thinking that he can get the Black Pearl back easily.
@@davidbraccini4770 You are making a lot of grand assumptions here without Truly thinking critically about it. If Barbosa does not have any hostility towards Captain Jack’s, then why Does he tie Captain Jack up after they release the pearl? And again immediately taking over as captain without consulting or considering Captain Jack’s feelings towards it? Per the end of on Stranger tides, Captain Jack assumed various ways of being able to open the pearl from the bottle, also at that point having the bag full of Ships that he apparently lost to Barbosa per the latter having such a fleet when we first Meet him in the fifth movie. Who is to say that Captain Jack did not try to go to Barbosa but refused And took the rest of the fleet with him; this may be subtly hinted out when the two first come across each other in the fifth movie Per their slight interactions And again Barbosa’s later actions towards Captain Jack when they re obtain the pearl, And or again went to another magical person, but they weren’t able to do that, again hence why Captain Jack gave up so easily because I mean whenever you go through all of that and are still not able to get it, It’s not uncommon not to mention not not being human to give up. And as evidenced by the movie, regardless of how messy and how much else bad may happen, sometimes giving up can lead you on the path to success eh? And going back to that, Just because we don’t see it in the movie, does that mean they didn’t do all those things you’re saying they should’ve done, as Fifth movie takes place over a year after on Stranger tides at least, so a lot Has happened that we don’t know about And can read between the lines of, like you’re ironically doing here but misguidedly
This was always one of my favorite movies as a kid and I’m glad to see I actually had good taste for once. This movie is always going to hold a special place in my heart. Maybe I’m just getting old and bitter but they really don’t make movies like they used to. I hope in the future my kids can enjoy this movie even half as much as I did
You know what is funniest about this video? It appeared in my youtube feed just as i was saying "Toy Story 2 is the best movie of the trilogy and i can prove it" to my friends.
Fox and the Hound is harder not to cry than even Jessie’s memories of Emily. Seriously, the scene with old woman talking about her time with Todd is basically torture.
Toy Story 2 is definitely up there with Dark knight, empire strikes back, godfather part 2, and shrek 2 in terms of perfect sequels. In my opinion, not only is this the best Toy Story movie, but also my favorite Pixar film
What do you guys like best about Toy Story 2?
So, anyway, I loved this video, and I hope you have a magical day 😊😊😊
The visuals are way too good for 1999
The music is some of the best music I’ve ever heard
The way they reuse some of the things we see earlier
The fact that the toys are actually putting effort into not being seen
The opening scene
The emotional scene
The comedy
They characters are actually intelligent
I need to know how you feel about Toy Story 3. (In 25-minute-long video essay format, of course)
Idk if toy Story 1 or 2 caused this but pixar/Disney having a pizza planet trunk in every movie showing how great this franchise is
Thor Ragnarok does not suck. A channel called screencrush actually did a video explaining why it's one of the MCU's best films
jessie's backstory literally made me into a toy hoarder and my mom hates me for it to this very day
Omfg sameeee I have so many stuffed animals- and 7 Jessie dolls bc I thought I had to “save them “
I gotta start collecting toys again.
Man, I wish I hadn’t given away my giant collection of toy cars. I regret that decision so much, even 14 years later.

Same.
What’s impressive is that they invented new characters (Jessie, Bullseye) and they feel part of the “Toy Story gang” despite being introduced in a sequel. That’s very rare with possibly Puss in Boots in Shrek being the only other one I can think of.
What are you talking about?
@@scottchaison1001 It just means they they fit right in as a addition of the toy gang even though they weren’t from the original
I can think of Yoda and Lando from the OG Star Wars trilogy and maybe the clones from the prequels. Davy Jones from Pirates? But yeah I can’t think of anything more than that, it’s a very impressive thing to do.
Don't forget Mrs. Potato Head. She's not in the first one either
@Michael Wells Yeah, you could make the argument that Davey Jones is a more iconic antagonist than Barbossa.
Can we talk about the bloopers though?

Buzz and Jessie were awesome lol
@@andyg2401, and let's not forget that time when Buzz's wings popped open at Jessie... we all know what that was about...
There is a you-story TV-show?
I love that in the first movie, buzz’s arm comes off, but in the 2nd one, woody’s arm does, it really emphasizes that the roles are switched in this movie
Buzz even repeats a lot of Woodys experience experiencing him through utility belt Buzz not knowing he’s a toy:
1. That shot of Buzz staring at UB Buzz from the display stand bottom and the camera pans up from the boots up the face exactly the same way from Woody glancing at Buzz on the bed
2. Once UB Buzz starts rambling all his space talk, Buzz is now the one experiencing what he used to do at Woody with talking of Zurg and space protocols being loud
3. He yells “You Are A Toy!” At woody this time

The thing I love most about Jessie's backstory, is that there are _no words_ (aside from the song lyrics of course). They explain her entire backstory using only visuals and a music score. Its the essence of "show don't tell."
it's tragic
So you like Miyazaki's films
Same could be said for the cleaning Woody scene
My favorite scene is when Buzz goes “Somewhere in that pad of stuffing is a toy who taught me that life’s only worth living if you’re being loved by a kid. And I travelled all this way to rescue that toy. Because I believed him.” Which is already a punch in the gut, and then Woody retorts with “Well, you wasted your time.” Ouch.
yeah it's a painful scene but luckily Woody came to his senses shortly after that
@@liamweaver2944 I’ll admit, I like that part, too.
Jesse's phobia of being in a box was actually resolved in Toy Story of Terror, if I recall correctly.
@@taqresu5865 And an example of what PTSD can feel like.
True. Andy cared about Woody because Woody is a sentimental toy and Woody doesn’t understand that. I always thought Andy would pass Woody on to his kids like him and his dad, not some random little girl, not to mention Woody is a priceless collectible lol smh
@@Tim7318-3That's the reason why Stinky Pete was right and the proof is the Toy Story 3. Andy will stop loving his toys as he gets older.
Now he’s gonna get doodled on and look silly!
I thought stinky Pete was the villain of the “woodys roundup” show
I can see why Stinky Pete's very angry in the 2nd movie
Even as a kid, I thought that Toy Story 2 just made Toy Story 1 better. I'm glad they made the sequel, because I don't think the franchise would be what it is today without it.
5:52 Finally someone said it!! I can't believe what Buzz was reduced to in the 4th film, I just can't wrap my head around how any of the people in charge thought it would be a good idea at all!
Not to mention that his loyalty to Woody has been completely assasinated in that movie.

One thing that I love about the Toy Story sequels is that each one adds onto the world in a way that only applies to toys:
Toy Story 2: toy collectors, toy stores, toys being put in museums.

Up - First 10 Minutes
Soul - Last 10 or so minutes
Inside Out - Riley's Apology
Finding Nemo - Barracuda
WALL-E - Losing WALL-E
Monsters, Inc. - Saying Goodbye to Boo
Monsters University - The Lake
Finding Dory - Following the Seashells
Toy Story 3 - The last 20 minutes
Toy Story 2 - When Somebody Loved Me
Can we also include Coco- Remember me?

Most people usually just say its the first 10 minutes of Up
100%
16:22 Actually something I noticed is that the climax did get made. In the scene where Woody is questioning his decision to go to the museum, the episode playing in the background is the finale. Prospector lied about it to manipulate Woody, Jessie, and Bullseye. You can hear Jessie thanking Woody for rescuing them in time, leading to the final scene of Woody singing “You got a friend in Me to the audience”; and then the series ends with the Round up Gang waving goodbye. That’s why when Woody turns on the TV and the first thing you see is the theme song play and the episode picking up where the last one left off.
I'VE BEEN SAYING THIS.
Huh, I never noticed that.
…OH!!!! THAT’S CRAZY!!!!
Holy crap it didn't even occur to me that it was the final episode! I just saw that and geeked out over the cheeky writers and directors

That’s basically where Toy Story 2 got the idea.
You gotta appreciate how this movie was written in only 9 months, and ended up being as amazing as it is
The animation in the Toy Story movies holds up because the lower quality models and lighting looks plastic, which works for toy characters. The human characters were uncanny but the toys look fine
That's one thing I don't like about Toy Story 4. It looks too high budget. It loses part of the charm. Toy Story 3 also had this, but to a lesser extent. That was also just a better movie.
My family always looks at me weird when I say this is my favorite Toy Story movie. What’s weird about it? It’s fantastic

I actually read the original script version they had written down before it got deleted along with almost the entire toy story 2, they had to do a completely different version(which is the one we know today)
-In the Original planned Script, Bullseye was supposed to speak.
-The Cut roundup gang member was a cactus named Señorita Cactus
-Instead of starting off with Rex and a video game, Rex rather watches a tv show of Buzz.
-Also sorry people but no Wheezy in this original script so no you’ve got a friend in me.

"Sometimes you need to feel the consequences of the wrong decision to know it was the wrong decision." Hits a bit too close to home to be honest.
I also appreciate that they animated bloopers, I love it when movies do that.

Toy Story 5:
The fact this movie had only 9 months to be reworked and turn out a masterpiece, while Toy Story 4 took a year to do it and destroy everything the franchise had established since 1995 astounds me. Toy Story 2 actually gave character development while Toy Story 4 regressed it. Very cumbersome
Wow just sad toy story 4 had so much more time and it was the worst- oh God light-year....
@@jaxsterminator8634 It destroyed everything by ruining Woody, Jessie and Buzz's characters into nothing and breaking the fundamental logic. Why did you think the Velma show got hated? Its because the characters became unlikable and their characteristics got assasinated. Same goes with Toy Story 4:
Woody leaves Bonnie over her not playing with him for 3 days.

I was just talking to my brother the other day about why Toy Story 2 was the best out of the movies (it almost tied with 3) and I couldn’t explain why I love it so much and this video puts the words I can’t say together perfectly.
Jessies story was so sad. The song says, "When somebody loved me, everything was beautiful..." it's so relatable. Poor Jessie

(Also, I like the idea of Stinky Pete coming back, but he's got lots of smudges on him and has clearly been drawn on.)
Finally, what if Lotso Huggin' Bear came back again?

One clever detail i noticed is that Al doesnt truly get excited about woodys value in the yard sale until he finds woodys hat, implying its rare to find a woody doll with his hat. And, when you look at the first 3 movies, he very easily looses his hat in the 3. Not sure about 4.
Imagine if Woody didn’t have his hat on him when he went down to the yard sale to rescue Wheezy:
Al: “If only you had your hand-stitched polyvinyl hat. So close to finding that rare Woody doll.” *puts Woody back down on the table. Miss Davis notices Woody*
Miss Davis: “How did Woody get down here? Better put him back up on the shelf.”
*Andy’s toys watching from window*
Buzz: “Phew. Thought that guy was going to take Woody, but at least Woody will be back safe in Andy’s room when Andy gets home.”
*roll credits*
Woody: runs back to Andy’s room

it was notorious for losing its hat

Good stuff mate :)

Another nice detail is for most of this sequel, Buzz clearly is more comfortable having his helmet off meaning he’s settled into accepting of being a toy for a long time
I’ve seen Toy Story 2 a million times as a kid and it was (and is) my favorite one. An amazing sequel to be sure.
I've seen it heaps as well due to the nostalgia
You can thank the goat himself Gary Rydstrom who was part of the sound department
Toy Story 2 foreshadows Toy Story 3, with the toys being "ruined, forgotten, spending eternity rotting in a landfill"

one thing i was carly impressed by was the direction of the movie. i was actually rewatching it today and i never realized how brilliant the he direction is. i want to specifically point out the transitions. they really helped sell the movie in the way they can be both funny and beautiful by moving the story along in seamless and fun ways. the way buzz gave his speech to make sure the other toys don’t give up and american flag starts to show up behind him. and then cut to black and white because it’s showing that it’s the tv now it transitioned to woodys storyline where al is asleep watching tv. like it made sense to out the flag behind buzz as he’s giving this soldier esque speech and then keep the flag but change to black and white because now it goes to woody because they are on the mission already to rescue woody. just so genius. and even the way emily plays with jessie and the way emily plays with her and the transitions occurs as she’s playing with jessie. revealing her backstory in such a beautiful heartbreaking way. and the way the transitions just show that fun that they had to then the loss that jessie experiences as she’s soonest forgotten, every just sort of vanishing now. this movie just had so much love and thought put into it. you can really feel that child like entity within this film by how it was made and told. that sense of wonder we all dream of recapturing from our youths was truly captured in this film.

Yeah Toy Story 1 and 2 were on continual repeat in my house when I was a kid, it was soo much that my parents memorized them both hahaha
About the whole thing with two Buzzes, a nice touch is that Utility Belt Buzz has the helmet on but the main one doesn't. This is great, because it is significant enough to show which one is which but subtle enough to not draw attention to it.
Yep and it shows that Andy's Buzz knows he's a toy whilst the Utility Belt Buzz still thinks he's some kind of astronaut
Fun fact, that buzz lightyear bit at the beginning was pretty faithfully recreated in the toy story 3 game
yep it was soo fun playing this part
With the crossing the road scene, it’s funny because imagine you get into some kind of chaotic car accident, all in the hands of some toys
I think Stinky Pete is afraid of being thrown away which makes sense, that's why I can sympathize with him
I would still have to say that the Married Life scene in Up is the most famous scene in Pixar's lineup, and perhaps their best scene period, but Jessie's history scene is also iconic.
I agree Toy Story 2 is the best sequel! 😢
Same
I used to watch Toy Story 2 religiously as a kid.
Didn't even have to watch to agree
TS2 expands the universe
Has it's own themes and adds upon to the original movie's characters.
Can't explain why it's so good myself lol
It's my favorite out of the 4 Toy Story movies but the 3rd one comes real close
24:05 I like also that it was sci-fi movies that cancelled woodies roundup, and then its buzz who is a sci-fi character who takes stinky Petes dreams of the museum away
Growing up, my dad was a toy collector and dealer. Some toys were *extremely* valuable, especially mint in the box. Being part of that world adds an extra dimension to the Prospector's character and perspective. Because at the end of the day, he's actually not entirely wrong in his sense of superiority about having stayed in his box. His exiting of the box to stop Woody from leaving is a genius moment in light of that.
This made me wanna rewatch it for the first time in a long time.
Nice to see another Toy Story 2 Fan the movie came out when I was born in 1999 therefore that alone makes it a good movie sequel.
Fun fact, there's a city near my home town called "Butte," so my family and I found that joke really funny because it's a real place we've actually been to.
Toy Story Tierlist in my opinion: (Best to Worse).
Toy Story 2
Toy Story
Toy Story 3
Toy Story 4
The best ranking.
@@bigbangbot-SuperSqank thank you nice icon.
Thanks.
I’d swap three with four, but otherwise completely agree :-)
Finally someone who ranked 4 in the bottom. Don't get gaslighted by that movie
Wow, no wonder I watched this movie all this time. Toy Story 2 truly is the greatest sequel ever made.
It's up there with Shrek 2 due to how good it is
I had no idea why, but as a child, Toy Story 2 was my favorite. So thanks for pointing out all of the good stuff in words that I couldn’t explain myself ^_^
You're not alone because I felt the same way
SUBBED FOR THE EARTHBOUND MUSIC
Oh, and the incredible analysis.
Great content made even better with Nintendo music.
Toy Story 2 has always been my favorite of the fantastic series
This was always one of my favorite movies as a kid and I’m glad to see I actually had good taste for once. This movie is always going to hold a special place in my heart. Maybe I’m just getting old and bitter but they really don’t make movies like they used to. I hope in the future my kids can enjoy this movie even half as much as I did
😳 How? Just how was this movie made in 9 months? NINE MONTHS!
Amazing
You know what is funniest about this video? It appeared in my youtube feed just as i was saying "Toy Story 2 is the best movie of the trilogy and i can prove it" to my friends.
NO WAY
Fox and the Hound is harder not to cry than even Jessie’s memories of Emily. Seriously, the scene with old woman talking about her time with Todd is basically torture.
At home, this is our favourite of the 3.
Toy Story 2 is definitely up there with Dark knight, empire strikes back, godfather part 2, and shrek 2 in terms of perfect sequels.
In my opinion, not only is this the best Toy Story movie, but also my favorite Pixar film
You listed all the really good ones, well, apart from terminator 2 and LOTR ig but all 3 of them are similar quality
