There's this one detail I think deserves a couple of wins and that's the different opening lines when the two girls pull Gabby Gabby's string.
When Harmony pulls the string, Gabby says "I'm Gabby Gabby and I love you", but when the lost girl pulls it, she opens with "I'm Gabby Gabby. Will you be my friend?". And I think there's an important difference between the two.
With Harmony, her approach comes off as desperate. Because she IS desperate. Gabby wants desperately to be loved, and feels like this is her only shot, so she wants to go all out. But love isn't just something that should be forced upon people. You can't just walk up to a stranger and say "Hi. I love you." They'll think you're crazy and reject you.
With the lost girl, she's no longer being desperate. She's not thinking about being loved. She's thinking about making that girl feel safe, and her opening line reflects that. So she opens with "Will you be my friend?" because it's more inviting and more reassuring to a person who's lost and scared, than opening with "I love you." At that moment, Gabby finally was being selfless and learned what it means to be a toy: "It's not about being played with, it's about being there for a kid when they need you."

Toy Story 4 was a better ending for Woody, who in many regards is the main character of the Toy Story series.
His role throughout the films is basically a metaphor for the stages of parenthood.
Toy Story 1 - How to deal when your kid no longer needs you to be the center their world.
Toy Story 2 - The parental midlife crisis, thinking about what potential you had if you didn't have a kid, and then realizing that making your child happy is enough for you.
Toy Story 3 - Letting go, when your kid is old enough to go off and be their own adult.
Toy Story 4 - Empty nest syndrome, and how to cope when your life doesn't revolve around your kid any more.
The third film was about knowing when to let go.
The fourth film is about what to do once you've let go, thus actually completing Woody's story arc.
    > Toy Story 4 becomes less of an attempt to tie in previous themes
Every one of the movies is thematically consistent, as they're all about Woody's purpose in life, be it having that feeling threatened, questioning if it's the right purpose, letting go of that purpose once he's no longer needed, or finding a new purpose for himself. Toy Story 3 is a better ending for the franchise but 4th is the better ending for Woody.

I have a particularly special connection to Toy Story, the series and I began our existence in the same year. 27 years later and I just watched this film for the first time yesterday, buying into the idea that it shouldn't exist because it was a perfect trilogy without it. But honestly? It wasn't. Not really.
In 3 we had the concept of toys being forgotten, but.. not entirely. The chest that held them all was still kept in Andy's room, and he had loved and adored them enough to even play with them as a young adult, that one last time. But we didn't really look at toys that were just plain forgotten. Sat on a shelf collecting dust, lost in the back corner of a closet, etc.. I cried way harder to this film than I did to 3, and that's saying a lot considering the ending of 3. It might just be me, but I think exploring how a toy would feel at the prospect of being totally forgotten and unwanted, is immensely interesting, and, completely heart-wrenching.
And in regards to your take on positions of privilege and the effect that has on people in reality.. well, I think it can be summed up with, "The higher you are, the farther you can fall."
All in all, really enjoyed this movie, and the coincidental release timing is pretty great too because it's still so fresh in my mind. I didn't notice a SINGLE reference to other Pixar movies but now I won't be able to ignore the ones you pointed out!

I saw Toy Story 1 and 2 as a kid a year younger than Andy, finished Toy Story 3 when I was an older teenager about to go to college, and saw Toy Story 4 as an adult. It felt so /right/ to see this outcome, because it ties up every little cliffhanger left by the end of TS3 and wraps it up for us adults who grew up with the series, while opening up a new universe for the kids and newcomers to the franchise. I remember that during the screening of TS3 a lot of kids and their parents walkd out of the theatre bc the kids didnt understand the plot (TS3 was definitely done for the millenials who grew up with the two previous movies), but with TS4 everyone was excited and all the kids wanted more. It's one of the reasons they retconned Bo-Beep's personality and relationship with Woody, in TS1 to 3 they were almost acting like a married couple while in TS4 she calls him her "boyfriend" and have this cutesy flirting that seems less mature and more about lovebirds finding each other after a long time. That is good, TS4 is like a rite of passage from us, adults, to the kids who can enjoy new adventures with Woody and Bo-Beep.

This is my favourite of the set. To me, the first three really established the bonds between friends and making room for new people in your life, moving on from childhood. This one was to me, growing up. You hit that existential dread about life, you come to terms with the fact that you aren't the main character and your actions can help or harm those around you and reaching out can sometimes help save someone. It's also meeting your love and realizing you may not have as much time if anytime for the old friend group, and coming to terms with that loss.

11:36 Okay, now I'm genuinely curious. DO toys breathe air? Jesse clearly hyperventilates whenever the idea of getting tossed back into storage is brought up in 2, and even in this movie, when Woody gets his head smooshed by Bonnie's Dad's shoe, he holds his nose and exhales to puff his head back out. So either toy manufacturers go as far as to make their toys have toy organs inside their stuffing, a thought I don't like to think of but seems the most logical (which is also concerning), or when they come alive they somehow manifest human anatomy like organs and even muscle systems. It makes sense...sort of. Not really.

It also makes sense because in Toy Story 2 he almost left Andy to be in the museum with the Roundup Gang. He’s been on the edge of leaving there and then in the beginning flashback with Bo. So yeah, very on par with Woody. He’s just finally listening to himself.

    • @lpsmurder
      @lpsmurder ปีที่แล้ว

It made no sense for him to want to leave with Bo after the climax of 2 when Bo was taken away. The entire point of 2 disproves that, through 2 he realises he doesn't need to be perfect and ponders his mortality, he doesn't need to be perfect to be loved, that's the point, so he gives up on leaving to be put in a museum because he values the love he shares with Andy and his friends more than he does being seen as a perfect toy, he wants to be there to see Andy grow up, which segways perfectly into 3's plot, the inclusion of Woody making a split second decision, which he soon takes back when he sees Andy looking for him, makes no sense between 2 and 3 given what he learned in 2
He doesn't need to be anyone's toy to be valued, and Bo shows that fine enough, but that's not what his personal values are
Why would Woody want to leave with her after the way she treats him in 4? If anything, 4 could have been a good lesson on not feeling you owe people who you knew in your past anything, because people change, you might not gel with them after awhile, and that's okay!

I actually rewatched this movie for the first time after seeing this video pop up in my reccomendations and it was worth the revisit even if my opinions on it haven't really changed. I'm not entirely sure the movie needed to be made give how perfect the ending to Toy Story 3 was (my brother absolutely refuses to watch this movie because he loves that ending so much), but I really do love Woody's arc in this one. I remember watching it in the theater and thinking about how much it would ruin the movie if he didn't stay with Bo, but at the same time not wanting him to have to say goodbye to everyone. And I can't help but love how no one tries to talk him out if it and Buzz even reassures him that Bonnie will be okay, essentially giving him permission to go...I really could go on, but suffice to say I'm glad I revisited this one and remembered how much I love it.

    • @lpsmurder
      @lpsmurder ปีที่แล้ว

I don't think it would have ruined the film if he hadn't gone with her tbh, it could have been a good lesson about not feeling like you owe anyone you knew in your past your loyalty just because you were once close, and it felt like Woody wasn't really given much of a choice, that it was inevitable that he HAD to go with Bo simply because he once loved her - its clear in 4 that Bo is not the same person she was before, she's changed for better or for worse, and from what I see she doesn't gel with Woody anymore, down to being overly critical and even verbally abusive to him
He doesn't need to stay as anyone's toy to be valued, but imo that just isn't within Woody's own personal values, however, it is Bo's own values, and if this film does anything right its that it shows the difference in those values and that neither are wrong for wanting what they have, Woody didn't need to be the one to tell the audience that just because he's the main character

Touching back on Bonnie's first day of school I really appreciate the continuity of her being a shy kid (i.e. the scene in Toy Story 3 when she doesn't want to talk to her mum's... coworker? Mum friend? I really can't remember who the adult is, but you probably remember the scene).
They could have easily just switched up her personality for the sake of the story, as she can seem quite flamboyant when playing with her toys, but it's also great that there was some kind of link between the two films, since there is already quite a lot of disconnect from one to the other, and it almost feels like payoff. Like, obviously they weren't setting up the plot of 4 in 3, because I doubt they even knew there was gonna be a 4, but it still makes them feel much more connected.

The part where the dad steps on Woody is a little hint that Woody has no purpose as Bonnie's toy anymore
Also, fun fact: The toy that opens the arcade machine door is the Tin Toy from the 1988 Pixar short of the same name!

Woody was always my favorite character, and this really is HIS movie ! The ending almost feels like someone accepting that he can finally retire from his career and happily move on to an other step in life.

I appreciate how they build up to Woody's choice throughout the road trip. Given how Bonnie during the "Throw Yourself Away" sequence prioritzes Forky to the point where Woody primarily is there as an afterthought and she immediately grabs Forky after both are missing in the car shows that she has a different less personal relationship with Woody than he had with Andy.

I get that Toy Story 4 is unnecessary, but I liked it. I remember my mom and I seeing it in the theater literally one week after it came out. Sure, the third film felt like a proper ending, but this one in my opinion felt like an even bigger one given that it would be the end of Woody and Buzz’s times together. Plus, we haven’t seen Bo Peep since the second movie, and that came out almost 20 years before this one did. Keep up the good work, Lee. You are eternally grateful, to infinity and beyond.

There's... one thing I didn't like about the ending. It's nice for Woody that he and Bo-Peep are back together, of course, but the thing is... Andy gave him to Bonny, not to keep, but to hold. He said "Would you take care of him for me", which implies that he was going to come back for him when he himself had kids. And now, his precocious Sheriff - a really rare toy if you'll remember - is lost. The fact that Bonny doesn't notice doesn't paint her in the best light.

To be fair to her, Woody was the first of Andy's toys that she had played with, so realistically, it would make sense for her to gravitate towards the other toys in the family. Kids go through that development cycle at the age she was at where they naturally decide what toy is their favorite.
Also I highly doubt Andy would bother coming back for his favorite toy if he's going to experience new shit by himself and get a girlfriend or boyfriend who would probably fill the role of comfort that Woody provided when he was a kid.

There is one or two wins that I believe was missed and both are connected to Tin Toy's cameo as the bouncer to the toy club in the arcade machine where you meet Duke Kaboom. For those who don't know, Tin Toy was one of the first stories Pixar did involving live toys (other toys from the short actually appeared in the caterpillar room scene hiding from the rough-housing kids they same way they hide from the baby in the Tin Toy short). Tin Toy's look of distain at Woody is also a nod to Tin Toy being replaced by Woody as the star of the Toy Story franchise.

One win I wish you mentioned, in the scene where Gabby Gabby is explaining her situation to Woody and Forky in the carriage, there’s a song playing in the background on a record player that briefly gets focused on for like a second. That song is called “Midnight, The Stars and You” which is also known as the song that plays at the end of the Shining. Not only does it add to the creepy atmosphere to people who’re familiar with the song, but also ties back to the first movie where the floor of Sid’s house had the same carpet patterns as the Overlook hotel from the Shining. Idk, I just thought that was cool.
But anyways, great video as always Lee. I’ve wanted to hear your thoughts on this movie for a while primarily because Toy Story 4 is probably the most controversial of the series (which TBF, I get) but I also remember really loving it when it came out, especially Woody’s arc and conclusion. I guess I just wanted to hear some thoughts on this movie that wasn’t just “IT BETRAYED THE SERIES’ MESSAGES!” for the hundredth time. Oh, and also I can tell the teaser frame is probably Eternals, another movie I really enjoyed and wanted to hear your thoughts on because of its mixed response. Here are some other movies I’d love to see you cover in the future:
    Isle of Dogs
    Jojo Rabbit
    Coraline
    Paranorman
    The Matrix Ressurections
    The Batman
    Turning Red
    Encanto
    Last Night in Soho
