I mean the original version of Woody was an insufferable asshole with no redeeming qualities. As opposed to the Woody we all love who is a petty asshole but it's also completely understandable why he is. He's never really had to be humbled before in his role as the leader of the toys. He's never had to feel insecurity before or see what limitations he has as a toy and as a person. The first movie really gives Woody a wonderful arc as he realizes that there are things he can't do that Buzz can but that's okay.

I really love the scene where Woody admits to Buzz that he’s jealous of him. Considering how he constantly kept hurling insults and threats at Buzz, seeing him witness Buzz admitting the fact that Woody was right about Buzz being a toy the whole time and then telling Buzz that being a toy is a whole lot better than being a space ranger is really sweet. He also reminds Buzz of his special features, like his wings, being able to glow in the dark, his voice box, and his helmet doing “that thing whoosh thing.” He even goes as far to say that he’s the one that should be strapped to Sid’s rocket. That just shows how much he’s grown and finally realises the error of his ways. 😊😊😊❤🤠👨🚀
I wonder what if in an alternate timeline, the Toy Story version with villainous Woody is the one that's released. In which Woody gets consumed by spite and become the antagonist after being abandoned by Andy in favor of Buzz Lightyear, and instead of befriending Buzz, Woody spends the movie along with the sequels trying to take down the Space Ranger he was replaced with, as he becomes much like Lotso from the third film. Speaking of which, Do you know that Lotso was originally planned to be in the first Toy Story film, but Pixar had trouble properly animating his fur. I love Toy Story trilogy (1-3) tbh. They represent Pixar at its finest along with UP and Ratatouille. They were among the many movies that taught me the power of friendship in love with my dysfunctional childhood, the third one especially teaching me the power of moving on & acceptance about things happening. My childhood was traumatic with many people around me besides my grandmother and uncle, but without these movies I fear I wouldn't have eventually learn what is right and wrong, nor let people in as I do today.

Also to be fair to the other toys, they were all ready to help Woody aside from Potatohead. Until they saw Buzz’s arm. If my friend was carrying someone else’s body part, I dunno, I’d at least want an explanation. Slinky’s horrified face, while pretty hilarious, is also a little relatable in that situation. That being said, Toy Story 2 throwing shade at Potatohead for being a jerk in this movie was pretty funny and warranted

Many people said the characters in this movie are a bit too mean but I feel they had to be that way so the message would get across as realistic. Great video!
Honestly, I think the toys turning against Woody by abandoning him at Sid's house served him right for how badly he treated Buzz earlier. As much as I sympathize with Woody as a character, he definitely did some things in this movie that were not at all cool. Thankfully, he made amends with Buzz and the rest of the gang, and eventually they all grew as a family in the second and third films.
Close enough, but yes, Toy Story 1 is still a classic despite its rough spots and of course shortcomings that came with the time, but that’s ok, cause it’s iconic for a reason, plus I gotta say, if there’s one thing about the original the others discontinued, it’s the dynamic between our heroes, in all the sequels Woody and Buzz get split up for the respective A and B plots, but this is the only one where they actually stick together the whole way through leading to the most iconic moments of the franchise between them.
Great video. One thing I have always found fascinating about this movie since watching it in my adulthood is the fact that Woody and Buzz become so close to getting back home on numerous occasions throughout the movie but then things go wrong. Earlier on in the movie, this is due to different views and motives from Woody and Buzz. They have a clear way to get back home which is easily accessible but because one character (typically Buzz) is not in the headspace, they don't take it and they end up in a worse scenario. Woody and Buzz end up in Sid's house because Buzz wanted to go in the rocket (the claw game) and he accepted his fate when Sid successfully grabbed him. Even though the two of them were essentially right next to their owners before this happened and Woody later on tried to pull Buzz out of the rocket (although the aliens interfered with that). Scenarios like this continue to happen as the movie progresses. Buzz would do something that was against Woody's goals but Woody went along with Buzz because he thought that bringing Buzz back was the only way he would be accepted by the other toys. He didn't do it because he cared for Buzz, he did it to try and save face for the mistake he made. After Woody and Buzz become friends however this changes. There are scenarios where Woody can easily get back home but every time, he sacrifices that in order to save Buzz, which always closes their easy ticket out. Woody for example could have easily just got in the car before it left but he stops to help Buzz, which costs him the car right. Scenarios like this continue for the rest of the climax. Woody is essentially safe to go home, Buzz gets into trouble, Woody goes to help Buzz and then sacrifices his chance to get home. This then ultimately concludes with Woody and Buzz working together to light the rocket and fly into the car, successfully getting them both home safely. Woody could have easily gotten home much more easily while leaving Buzz behind but he instead risked his life to save Buzz, which got them both home in the end. It just goes to show how much Woody had grown throughout the movie. Earlier on, he saw Buzz more as a nuisance, only staying with Buzz because he thought that he couldn't return without Buzz or all the other toys would no longer respect him. By the end however, Woody willingly put himself in danger and gave up his easy road home to save Buzz because he truly befriended Buzz at that point and it paid off for both of them. I tried to explain this as well as I could and I'm not sure how well I succeeded but I do find it to be a fascinating thing in the movie. There are so many points where the movie could have just ended then and there but because the character's made certain decisions, that does not happen. If you are not familiar with the movie, you never truly know when it is going to end because so many opportunities for Woody and Buzz to get back present themselves but then Woody and Buzz never take them for one reason or another. The way the movie is structured like this really helps to illustrate Woody and Buzz's relationship and how it changes and grows throughout the movie. They both start off as flawed people who do not get along but after a long and dangerous journey, they ultimately become very good friends and better people. It is an excellent tale of how unlikely friendships can form and the movie as a whole holds up extremely well in my opinion.
Great video. The only part I disagree with is when you said "Them not letting him back into the house showed that they were never really his friends". Wouldn't you do the same after seeing(presumably) that the guy literally tore apart the new guy out of jealousy? Would you still let that psycho in after what he did? What they did there made perfect sense, seeing how that looked like, even if they were his friends before, seeing what kinda monster he'd become\always was inside it makes perfect sense they let the rope go and wouldn't let him in again.
The change from woody being the bad guy was a great change. I’m so glad that’s how it turns out, allowing for Toy Story 3 to be as good as it was. Plus this movie feels so unique still.
I love the Toontown music in the background haha. Great video with good insight! Toy Story is one of my favorite movies of all time because of the relational dynamics between those two and display of trust and growth.
Woody became such a compelling character to watch in all of these movies. I even liked him in 4 but my memory on that one is a bit foggy. Overall great trilogy however. Always brings emotion and writing together beautifully
TS1: Woody learns to be a better person TS2 & TS3: Woody learns something new about himself and gets wiser TS4: Woody learns to be his own person and not be so reliant on his purpose as a toy TS5 (possibly): Dies
"who will defend him if he's already the best?" this comes back in toy story 3 as one of my favorite details: as they face the incinerator and accept their fate, everyone else has someone supporting them, Buzz and Jessie, Mr. and Mrs. Potato head, the dog and pig and dinosaur, but because Woody is so strong and the leader and always tasked with (and able to) manage the other toys emotions rather than the other way around, he has no one and is totally on his own, just staring into the fire with absolute dread. Sure he holds the other groups hands, but that is more so symbolic of how he is holding everyone else together, and not that anyone really pays closest attention to him. Even though by that point everyone truly respects and cares for him, he just isn't really the first one anyone else thinks of in the biggest moment of crisis because of his usual steadfastness and demonstrated level of agency. Just brilliant how this comes back from the first movie to the climax
This is not to imply the other toys are wrong or that this is bad writing because Woody somehow doesn't command the level of respect he deserves at that point. This feels like genuine writing pointing out a fact of life: if you are the most successful and did everything right, that just makes people psychologically not help you as much as if you seem vulnerable. There is nobody being good or bad, that is just how people and society sometimes works, and is a great contrast to the somewhat unrealistic lie most kids films prop up that once the main character saves the day they are unconditionally most appreciated and loved
Friendship is always demonized as "the easy, safe theme to go with" from people that don't really get that doing it well is really hard. Friendship is more then just "we like each other let's hang out," it takes work and understanding to maintain, hell, I would argue that maintaining positive friendships is more important then having a romantic one.
This movie has aged like fine wine as had The incredibles & Toy Story 2 especially & 3 of course but I miss when they were at their best but now PIXAR has really fallen though I have to be fair and say that Elemental while not great but was very watchable and not anywhere near the train wreck I thought it was going to be. Also Hi! Rockotar!
I grew up with Toy Story 1 and 2. While i personally hold 2 more precious, i do agree that this film is the more perfect one as the staple of the franchise. Too bad the 4th one and the Buzz Lightyear film ruined everything
I've seen this through to the end and I'm fascinated by your analysis of the movie. For it being the first it still has things to unpack and you brought it out you iconic person
Toy Story is one of my favorite works of fiction ever precisely because neither party is completely wrong or completely right, they have to trully compromise, understand their faults and the other's viewpoint. So many stories (even today) have a clear bad guy, and even those that don't have a bad guy don't manage to represent their characters in a balanced way, as in an important character might not have bad intentions, but their actions and worldviews are so damaging to what happens in the plot, that you can't say they're as forgivable as Woody. If anyone noticed, yes, I'm mostly using the grandmother in Encanto as an example. I don't care about her tragic backstory, she has caused so much damage to the others in the family and she realized her mistakes too late in the film for the viewer to believe she really understands her mistakes.
Thank you Rockator for another interesting video. Toy Story will always have a special place in my heart. During the golden era of Disney, I could torture my family with the Lion King up to 3 times a day (according to my grandmother and mother's stories), And I can understand why. My childhood was during a beautiful period where there was no artificial political correctness and the creators simply created beautiful stories (besides the obvious desire to make money xd). Of course, I'm aware that they were based on old fairy tales by the Brothers Grimm, for example, but they were able to include a certain magic in their adaptations that still delights today. Pixar definitely fit into this concept and started using this magic to create wonderful content. Toy Story is not only a graphic miracle created by the animators but also a wonderful story written by the screenwriters, which has been a great delight to this day. Thank you again for reminding me of this magic in your film. At the time I saw it simply as a good cinematic production, and today I am searching for the deeper messages it carried with it. Greetings to you, from your loyal fan from Poland (I mention this because I wonder how many of your subscribers are also of my nationality :D). I wish you much healt in these sick times and I look forward to your next video!
Toy story was my favorite pixar movie for a very long time it's my second favorite now (wall e is the best pixar movie FIGHT ME) this movie just gives me vibes that the people who worked on it cared and loved what they were making
I like to see Woody's development in Toy Story as an older brother learning to accept he is no longer the "house king", and that he has a younger brother now with whom he has to share his stuff (when I re-watched it, it reminded me of a children’s tale I was obsessed with as a kid called «Julius, the House King», in which its main character, a little girl called Lily, had to learn to accept that she was no longer the “house queen” and she had to share with her little brother). 🧡 Also, can we collectively agree the 4th film is just bad fanfiction and not part of the Toy Story canon? :3 (Great video. ❤)
You killed it, I love your break down on the toy story movie , props to your Chanel, can you do break down on finding Nemo, there's not to many , good father movies in my opinion, had to ask,, anyway take care and stay blessed my guy👍✔️🎓
6:46 I should've expected this from someone who used the Sellbot Factory music in another video, but don't think I didn't spot that Executive Suite Battle. Good taste. XD
I know it’s a little redundant the comparison between these two, but if there’s another movie that absolutely nailed the same concept of Toy Story 1, it’d be the scarier than horror animated classic, The Brave Little Toaster, and how it’s such a great tale of facing adversity with a gang of misfits who also go through dire steaks to reach their owner before they move.
I'm going to be honest. I love the first two movies. They are stand alone to me. I truly enjoy Toy Story 3, but I love the choppiness of the animation of the first two. The newer movies look good, too good. Like they're too polished visually for me.
Too late to make this comment but I compare this to the first Ironman from 2008. Both are the perfect villain to hero stories and both launched iconic franchises. Woody wasn't necessarily a facist dictator like Lotso but Woody viewed himself as superior. The only reason Woody treated all of the other toys with reapect was because they were not a threat to Woody's power. It was that jorney alone that turned Woody into a villain to hero.
To be fair to Woody though, he didn’t mean to knock him out the window, just behind the desk. Selfish, yes, but not as bad as it could’ve been. *Cough Black Friday Reel.*
Yup. At least in the final version he regretted doing that, he attempted to push Buzz between the wall and the drawer by using the ARC remote kart to push him in between that gap, but his selfish plan backfired on his face so bad that he unintentionally got Buzz pushed out the Window. Lol
@@jessicapinkman-hd4bwI thought it was gonna be just until after Pizza Planet. He could probably find a way to get him out after, and the movie makes a big deal about the trip.
That is true, but it still was not very nice of Woody to hurt Buzz like that. Thankfully, he never once blamed the other toys for getting him and Buzz in trouble and he eventually took the fall which showed a significant progression in his character.
Definitely a masterpiece, and one of my favorite Pixar movies. The only thing that hasn't aged well about it is the animation. Everything else aged beautifully.
As much as I love Don Rickles’ performance, I really can’t stand Mr Potato Head in this movie. He’s such a jerk to Woody throughout the entire movie. Even before Buzz came into the picture! He reprimands Woody for being jealous of Buzz, despite the fact it’s implied that he’s jealous of Woody, as evidenced by this line: “Of course Woody ain’t worried. He’s been Andy’s favourite, since kindergarten.”
@@grathem9789 To be fair, Woody was kind of downplaying the toys' concerns of being replaced. I get that he was trying to help them stay calm during the birthday party, but he was kind of rude to them at first. But not ANYWHERE near as much of a scumbag he was when Buzz first arrived.
Another underrated piece of media u have to see is Troll hunters :Tales of arcadia (Netflix) series l. Great characters, story, and style Guillermo del Toro can do no wrong
This movie will always be my favorite childhood favorite animated movie of all time. The message about friendship, and two people (toys per say lol) from 2 different backgrounds both challenge each other, then learning the hard way and work together as a team to escape and learn to respect and rely on each other despite their differences. 🥲 And the story about the early Black Friday Reel of Toy Story when Woody was originally an edgy mean spirited a-hole was all Jeffrey Katzenberg’s decision that it became bad so bad and was not what John Lassater and the Pixar team set out to make that Disney nearly shutdown the Toy Story production, but the Pixar refused to let it happen before their very eyes, and so Disney decided give them 2 weeks to write the story they wanted make, and that’s how we got the finished movie that we all know in love. This was back when Pixar could take risks, releasing masterpiece after masterpiece, and also back when John Lassater was on the top of his game being a once great influence and inspiration in the animation industry by starting the birth of full length CG 3D animated movies. It saddens me to see what he became these last few years. :( Anyway, nice video analysis on another childhood movie of mine as always! =D ^^
I've always loved Toy Story! It still holds up to this day, being the first ever computer-animated feature movie! 😃 Woody is my favourite of all the characters, since he's tried to keep the toys in place, but soon learns to make a true friend in the one who he thought would replace him. Fantastic stuff! Buzz Lightyear is awesome as well.

I agree with you at 0:49 because Woody is my favorite from the Toy Story gang as well, both him and Jessie when it comes to the lady characters 💕🤠
your lame
Close enough, but yes, Toy Story 1 is still a classic despite its rough spots and of course shortcomings that came with the time, but that’s ok, cause it’s iconic for a reason, plus I gotta say, if there’s one thing about the original the others discontinued, it’s the dynamic between our heroes, in all the sequels Woody and Buzz get split up for the respective A and B plots, but this is the only one where they actually stick together the whole way through leading to the most iconic moments of the franchise between them.
That is one of the reasons why I like this movie the best.
He is such a jerk in the first Toy Story film and Tom Hanks did a outstanding job with the Character Growth of Woody.
Can we have a video and how genuinely good Treasure Planet was in terms of plot and character development?
I agree
Wow, "You Got a Friend in Me" is more deep and clever than I thought! 🤯 Bravo Randy Newman! 👏👏
Great video as always, Rockotar! 👍❤️
My favorite Woody line in the entire first Toy Story movie: "So play nice!"
From the scene when he comes to life in front of Sid.
For sure the best Animated Movie of all Time. Only Movies like Ratatouille, The Incredibles, Monsters, Inc. and Toy Story 3 come close.
Woody accepting buzz as a friend in Toy Story 1 was obviously probably forged out of a fight or die situation.
Tbh The title change to "why toy story is an Iconic classic"
Is pretty clear and Nice
omg your underrated as heck dude
One of the best animated movies ever, hands down.
Yea with the incredibles and ratatouille
@@user-op8ge3kq6sand most of Pixar’s 2000 films
I love the Toontown music in the background haha. Great video with good insight! Toy Story is one of my favorite movies of all time because of the relational dynamics between those two and display of trust and growth.
Woody became such a compelling character to watch in all of these movies. I even liked him in 4 but my memory on that one is a bit foggy. Overall great trilogy however. Always brings emotion and writing together beautifully
I had Toy Story on VHS as a kid. Returned to the movie as an adult and it is the definition of timeless
i love your choice of background music
TS1: Woody learns to be a better person
TS2 & TS3: Woody learns something new about himself and gets wiser
TS4: Woody learns to be his own person and not be so reliant on his purpose as a toy
TS5 (possibly): Dies
"who will defend him if he's already the best?"
this comes back in toy story 3 as one of my favorite details: as they face the incinerator and accept their fate, everyone else has someone supporting them, Buzz and Jessie, Mr.
A major major pioneer movie in redemption stories, especially as a kids movie, first cgi movie
Um actually, I like Toy Story 2 better as well.
Forged in fire is great.
Forged out of trial and error and learning and mutual respect is even better.
I think the animation still hold up too. Surprising for a 1995. Sure the expressions are stiff but the movement and lighting looks good.
I used to have this movie memorized word for word 😅
Love this movie. Childhood. Appreciate the nostalgia. Needed it today.
I personally don’t think the toys turning on woody was a lack of stability but the severity of his supposed crime
0:57 I'd love to hear a rant about Toy Story 4 from you. That movie makes me sick to the stomach.
The first movie was always my least favourite Toy Story film, I still think it is but this video made me like it a lot more
Toy story was my favorite pixar movie for a very long time it's my second favorite now (wall e is the best pixar movie FIGHT ME) this movie just gives me vibes that the people who worked on it cared and loved what they were making
(Great video. ❤)
You killed it, I love your break down on the toy story movie , props to your Chanel, can you do break down on finding Nemo, there's not to many , good father movies in my opinion, had to ask,, anyway take care and stay blessed my guy👍✔️🎓
lol the quality difference between the first movie and literally all of the others afterwards 😂
Toy Story is my all time favorite Trilogy because every Movie is great
Except 4
@@traviscunningham7062 yes thats why i said trilogy the 4th movie is 💩
Out Of Topic, but i wished we saw Sid's mutants more in the other movies, i love those creatures so much.
6:46 I should've expected this from someone who used the Sellbot Factory music in another video, but don't think I didn't spot that Executive Suite Battle. Good taste. XD
13:34 "what he" sounds like "woody"
At some point, could you possibly rank all the Disney relationships
I want to hear your full thoughts on Toy Story 4. I think TS3 is a top 3 Pixar movie while TS4 is a bottom 3
A very well put together breakdown of toy story one of the best, keep up the awesome content Rockotar
what an amazing video lots of great info.
Hopefully the 5th movie will give us a more satisfying ending
I hope so too.
The song is obv iconic when the title itself has such a deep meaning
@@robertlauncherI think that Buzz could have either crawled under the drawer if there was space or walk along the wall to the sides.
That is true, but it still was not very nice of Woody to hurt Buzz like that. Thankfully, he never once blamed the other toys for getting him and Buzz in trouble and he eventually took the fall which showed a significant progression in his character.
It's my favorite film.
Rockotar you're Videos belong to YT Premium they are so good.
Woody and Buzz were such different toys that managed to work together.
They eventually learned to become friends in order to return to Andy.
Definitely a masterpiece, and one of my favorite Pixar movies. The only thing that hasn't aged well about it is the animation. Everything else aged beautifully.
0:39 haha a bit ironic isn’t it now?
7:29
I don’t think they were going to throw him out the window.
As much as I love Don Rickles’ performance, I really can’t stand Mr Potato Head in this movie. He’s such a jerk to Woody throughout the entire movie. Even before Buzz came into the picture! He reprimands Woody for being jealous of Buzz, despite the fact it’s implied that he’s jealous of Woody, as evidenced by this line:
“Of course Woody ain’t worried. He’s been Andy’s favourite, since kindergarten.”
He does have a point he saying that woody is not worrying about him or the other characters because he is in a position of power
@@WesleyCoats-d1i Exactly
17:28 You forgot to put Aladdin in the list of movies shown in this video.
Another underrated piece of media u have to see is Troll hunters :Tales of arcadia (Netflix) series l. Great characters, story, and style Guillermo del Toro can do no wrong
It’s crazy how MrPotato basically tells woody to kill himself using the toy that draws things 😂
And to think we nearly got a woody that was a total asshole
Theyre the Goku and Vegeta of Pixar😂
Actually, I think Al and Genie's friendship in Aladdin is the best
Toy Story is my favorite Pixar movie besides Finding Nemo and Monsters Inc.
*YOU!!! ARE!!! A!!! TOOOOYYY!!!!*
This movie will always be my favorite childhood favorite animated movie of all time. The message about friendship, and two people (toys per say lol) from 2 different backgrounds both challenge each other, then learning the hard way and work together as a team to escape and learn to respect and rely on each other despite their differences. 🥲
And the story about the early Black Friday Reel of Toy Story when Woody was originally an edgy mean spirited a-hole was all Jeffrey Katzenberg’s decision that it became bad so bad and was not what John Lassater and the Pixar team set out to make that Disney nearly shutdown the Toy Story production, but the Pixar refused to let it happen before their very eyes, and so Disney decided give them 2 weeks to write the story they wanted make, and that’s how we got the finished movie that we all know in love.
This was back when Pixar could take risks, releasing masterpiece after masterpiece, and also back when John Lassater was on the top of his game being a once great influence and inspiration in the animation industry by starting the birth of full length CG 3D animated movies. It saddens me to see what he became these last few years. :(
Anyway, nice video analysis on another childhood movie of mine as always! =D ^^
early message in the video but im shocked you didn't talk about the big plot hole, buzz dosen't think he's a toy yet plays dead when adults are around
YOU USED TOONTOWN REWRITTEN MUSIC!?? You my friend are the goat of goats 🐐
You should do a video on WALL·E
Me waiting for the Disney unholy trinity 3
I have actually finished that video, but TH-cam is being picky about copyright, so I have to re-edit a lot of clips to get it uploaded properly.
Toy Story is an amazing tale of friendship but to me Lord of The Rings is the best example of friendship. Just Frodo and Sam's journey is incredible.
Toy Story 1 is great, but I think 2 is better in every way
I do as well
I've always loved Toy Story!
