Fit is (almost) everything - both in terms of comfort and sound. Hence tips are VERY important. If you can’t get a seal everything else doesn’t matter…
Appreciate your breakdown of this stuff. TBH hadn't fully considered a lot of this stuff before despite being in this hobby for a little while, so i appreciate it.
Eartips are definitely a game changer! I have a few different sets myself, and at times I grab a different one just to hear the difference in sound, and it opens up a lot of opportunity for slight tuning shifts! Fit is also very important to me for I've small ears. For example, I really do enjoy the Delci AE, but due to its shape, I'm not able to wear it for more than 2 hours per session. The EW300xHBB on the other hand, slots right into place and I can wear it the whole day without any issue.
Dude, I'm in love with you! Couple hours ago I bought a 3$ KZ 3-sized foam eartips set from AE (BF sale) and you just confirmed me that it was the cheaper, wiser and most returning upgrade, over a new pair of iems! This channel is a hidden gem! You deserve AL LEAST 100k subs!
Thanks again Jays Audio for alwayd the great advice. Ear tips are always my upgrade of new IEM, Spinfit is always my go to when looking for ear tips upgrade.
And Jay became even more trustworthy and valuable source for Audio stuff. No bs, no snake oil. I love when people don't pretend they can hear the grass growing. Hate that cable and dac/amp propaganda from delulu's who cope too much to justify their purchases. You have manufacturer like JDS Labs, someone who has done research and would directly benefit financially from selling larger line of products saying how "chips are designed to sound the same, if yours sound different it is likely faulty" and then you have the average Head-Fi'er "bRo ThiS DaC IS wARm, ThE oThER iS tOo CliNiCal". With the exception for Tube/R2R of course but those are intentionally designed to alter the sound and not just placebo driven nonsense. In the regular ones all you hear is dB differences = lower volume/higher volume, match them and they sound the same. And JDS Labs goes more indepth why A/B wouldn't work either because it has to happen in 0.2sec timeframe.
Favorite video by far! Definitely agree with eartips being at the top of the list. I’ve also had the same experience with the Pilgrim where the stock tips weren’t the best choice. I did find the Velvets, Spinfit W1s, and the Softears UC to work on them really well for my ears.
Definitely agree about tips as they are so important. I loved the spinfits w1. Unfortunately, lost them :( Gotta get more tips. Thinking of trying divinus velvets next.
Cheers to you for doing a giveaway! I’ve never been able to grab any higher-end IEMs, so fingers crossed! I started with the BLON BL-03 way back in 2019.
Really good video! Loved the matching pics to the themes you used. Very clever and often pretty funny😅 As someone who maintains the hobby through budget sets, l find changing the tips is a huge factor! One brand in particular,Simgot , doesn't fit my ears very easily and finding the right tips to get a seal is huge with them. Thanks again for a very informative talk.
Great video as always! Im in this hobby for almost 7 years. In my country I have the luxury to have shops can demo majority of IEMS , Dacs etc. Always try first, dont blind buy. I do recomend to get a good source/dac that suits your taste. A good source/dac can give a different sound different sound signature. ESS dacs = brings out dry sharp fast details. AKM dacs = brings out a smooth and detail sound sig. I prefer IEM and dacs that allow me to listen for long hours. I pick AKM dacs.
I have to say I agree with all your points of each of these ideas and applications. I just started tip rolling and wow, never knew it actually would make a difference. When i started listening to the Tea Pros I just got, my first thought was that it felt as though it was congested on busier tracks. Then, I got the Divinus Velvet Wide Bore Eartips and now it feels open and that problem is not a thing.
Fitting is the most important thing for me, just like you said, no matter how good the IEM sounds, if the fit is bad, it won't stay comfortable for long
i haven't quite got into iems yet in my audio journey , i only have my openback fidelio X2HR headphones that were my introduction into the audiophile hobby , and boy was i blown away with the difference in the sound quality and the veryy detailed treble that i can say was almost non existent before (i wonder if i actually was hearing any treble before listening to them lol) ,and also i started liking hearing all the crackles and the little imperfections in the recordings of some songs , totally new experience and i wonder what else will i discover and hear more if i upgraded them ! can't wait to do so and also get started on the iem train !
I never usually use the default eartips that come with earphones. It would be great to include ones from well-known and reputable brands that complement each IEM, such as Tangzu, Divinus, SpinFit, etc.
Would love a video on tips, explaining the difference in sound quality depending on bore size etc. and a list of tips to get for people that are looking to tip roll.
Couldn't agree more, tips are a must. Just changing the size of the tips make a huge difference for me let alone switching to another type. As for DAC, I personally don't own one but I ordered the jcally jm6 pro, it should come this week. Will see how much of a difference it will make. Great video btw, as always 🫡
Tips are a huge deal. Just getting a good seal is huge. Cables are more about how you feel about the look and feel. Sources matter, but only up to a point. I think some of the current dongle DACs can hang with big budget desktop great.
Same! Bonus: budget IEM that come with quality cable and the better tips, like does the Wan Er have the same tips as the Gate? For $10 that's a backup set and cable instead of buying just the tips
Finally, the tier list tier list. I could use some help - I got the star city 5 pro and have been very happy with it, although there is something in the treble that makes some recordings a little rough (early Nine Inch Nails). I wanted two pairs - one for studio (flat, maybe a little extra treble) and one for enjoyment (to me, a nice zero red). Originally Nova, but worried it's more like original zero blue for me and will not use foam. Maybe supermix or ke4 for the fun?
So i found your channel when i was looking for a good set of earbuds for hiphop. Your dos cinco review as well as other youtubers came up giving good recommendations and i bought a set. Now im seeing a ton of your videos recommending a bunch of other iems from that company. Should i return and pick something elee? I have always felt like no matter if its car audio wolfers, or pretty much every other headphones ive used, i crave more bass. I don’t have the headphones yet, they were a cyber Monday deal I ordered last night
I'm someone who's had fit issues since the start. My right ear canal has a wide opening but gets narrow towards the inside whereas my left is quite literally the opposite. Comfort is an easy "Must Do" for me solely due to how much it's been a bother
I actually have my left ear canal larger than my right. Looking into tips now and just learn that good seal can be make or break for any iem. Thanks for the tips lol
As a newbie who is getting deeper in the world of iem thanks to you, now i wanna know what brands and variants should i look out for in cables that are quality and durable and ear tips, tips and cables will be replaced overtime, great info in the price range thats quite helpful in deciding what iem to choose because there is so many good products out there that its hard to choose
XINHS, NICEHCK, DUNU, TRIPOWIN, all have solid cables. Most of the cable from any seller these days are pretty sturdy, just avoid ones that are super cheap relative to others. As for tips, you have Azla, TangZu, TRI, and any recognizable chifi brand names 👍
I can't really discern cable sound differences, but I still take one for longevity and aesthetics purposes. Sometimes the stock cable makes me worry, as I feel they are not durable enough. Recently I found out a weird thing; for Single DD IEMs I like to pair them with 4.4mm balanced cables. For hybrids, however, I like to keep them stock.
Thanks Jay, I just got this amp Astell Kern PA10 still portable stuff, I hook it to Fiio Q15 or this sweet sounding oldy Tri Tk2 and let me tell you… it is a difference, lifelike difference🔆 have to say😄🙋♂️ , btw Iam now around the $1000 mark but still have to come back to Meteor and Project M very often❤️

Would love your input!

Very well explained. Esp. the eartips, they play the biggest role in my opinion and are the most value for money product in this hobby towards IEMs.

Cables can be good upgrade if your stock cable is bad the only benefit you will get from a cable is the Looks and the untangles of the cable
