- Previously, I made a video explaining how Mario’s HP works [ • HP ]. On that video, knavesmith commented: “How do all of these variables react when Mario has the metal cap on?” [ • HP ]. After taking a quick look at it, I realized it was more complicated and interesting than I had originally thought. So, I figured I’d just make a video about it.
In most cases, Mario’s invincible while he’s wearing the metal cap. Almost all things that increase the DEC counter no longer do, except for fall damage. Most things that affect HP directly also no longer do, such as toxic gas and water. However, water still can affect Metal Mario in certain situations, such as right after he jumps into water, right after he receives knockback underwater, and while he’s riding on the water shell underwater. Thus, there are in fact several ways for Metal Mario to die. Also, I didn't mention this in the video, but all the things that affect Mario’s INC counter (e.g. coins, heart spins, air bubbles) still function normally for Metal Mario. - เกม
The fall damage one seems odd to me. All the other forms of damage require situations that aren't present normally or ones you go out of your way to get, but fall damage isn't hard to take.
i guess logic-wise, wearing armour wouldn't save you from falling off a cliff IRL
@@dazcar2203it's not that he's wearing a suit of armor, it's that he's temporarily made of metal, inside and out. Hence why he sinks like a rock and doesn't need to breathe. So I'd agree that he shouldn't take fall damage either, as there is nothing soft inside *to* damage

Easily fixable if we disassembled the source code for Super Mario 64 & fixed all of that... making Metal Mario actually as it says after the Metal Mario switch (the big green switch at the beginning).
So Metal Man's weakness are: height, burning before switching from his secret identity, and water during special circumstances. The Man of Steel will fall soon.

having the metal cap means he does not have to breathe, not that you can't, and he does because he's used to on land, but still he shouldn't be coughing: either the metal cap makes himinvulerabe to the gas, in wich case he should cough, or it doesn't so he should take damage

In the DS version, Metal Wario (since you need to be Wario to access the metal cap) doesn't take lava damage OR do the lava boost. THE MORE YOU KNOW
He sinks like standing on quicksand, so he still can die.

Those Inception references got me thinking that Inception would have been so much more interesting if they could go 0.5 levels down at a time, thus helping to conserve the amount of levels down in a full dream run.

And of course he can still fall into a bottomless pit and die, don't forget about that.
It sets his HP to 256, not 255.
But you lost a life, so you died.
When Mario collects 1000 coins in the Japanese version, he loses all of his lives, and goes to -25. Does Mario die? No. Did he lose lives? Yes.
Was that intentional? No. Is that a glitch? Yes.
Although he does lose a life, he still doesn't hit 255 hp.

I'm confused as to whether Metal Mario is supposed to take more damage from electricity or none if he is made out of metal (which, depending on the metal, can conduct electricity)
Should be none. The reason inside a car is the safest place in a thunderstorm is not because of the rubber tires, it is because the car’s metal exterior reroutes the lightning’s electricity around the outside of the car, which then jumps through the air to the ground from the bottom of the car, leaving the inside of the car completely unharmed.
The same would happen in Mario’s metal suit. Electricity doesn’t penetrate the inside of metal, it flows on the outside of it.
Even if it’s not a metal suit and it’s somehow converting Mario’s body into metal, electricity still flows only on the outside, leaving Mario’s body unharmed.

It's worth noting at in the ds version with wario (who has the metal cap power) when using the power in lethal lava land, the lava doesn't hurt wario but while active the player slowly sinks in the lava similar to quicksand. Despite that, it's very helpful there!
that makes a lot of sense! since lava is (iirc) as dense as rocks, you wouldnt sink imediately but tou wouldnt just walk on it either.

This video is worth watching due to the amazing Metal Mario theme. The best power up theme in the series.
It's a bit odd how some of the best Mushroom Kingdom game songs are in the metal genre. You'd think the more pop-based ones would be better, but no, Metal Cap theme, YI Final Baby Bowser fight and (in a different but still unusual genre) Yo-Yo-Yoshi from Yoshi's Story are three of the best songs I've ever heard in any of the post-Gameboy era of Nintendo games.

NewAgeDerpDerp Oh Yeah! That’s right! The freezing water is also in Snowman’s Land. I’ve playing the DS version for a bit and when I went to save Wario there’s a pond of freezing water but it’s colored bright blue so I thought it was different for some reason.

No, it causes the exit-course fade out without affecting Mario's HP. If it did cause Mario's HP to be at death HP, then you wouldn't be able to run around, jump, or collect stars while the fade out happened. Instead, you'd do the death animation as soon as you touched the ground
And again, I learned something new. I didn't know there was this strange metallic cap in the game. Interesting!

In the previous video you mentioned that if Mario is squished for 10 seconds his HP will be set directly to 255. What happens if Mario has the Metal Cap during those 10 seconds?
That's a failsafe the devs put in so that you couldn't get softlocked. It's still interesting to find out if the failsafe still gets triggered.

You know, I've kinda always been facinated about coding and games and stuff, but your videos actually make me extremely interested in coding! Or at least the logic behind the coding.
You've done the impossible and made a game I have beaten honestly over a 100 times, actually even more interesting. And that's no easy feat. You sir, get an honorable spot in my book of "actually enjoyable youtubers who make adequate content."
I didn't think I wanted this video, now I can't imagine a world without it.
Always amazes me how much people are willing to go to find out every nook and cranny a game has to offer. Some helping in speedruns, 100%'s, etc; or simply just a person testing how far a game can go before it breaks. Amazing community, although I'm not sure exactly what community this kind of stuff would fall under, "Post Game Testers"?. Never the less, mad respect to people like Pannen for going out of their way to testing and discovering things in video games, that many people would never think about going for. Keep up the amazing work my dude.

What if you used damage overflow in LLL, then immediately equipped the metal cap? Would the damage counter reset to zero after putting on the cap, or would it start to take away HP?

Metal Mario's still tough as nails! The only way to hurt him is by abusing glitches or falling! Metal IS heavy after all.

Results are different without the cap, though.
Mario is programmed to appear at the surface no matter what, but since he would be at 255 hp, he dies as soon as making contact with the water, since it registers dead + water = drown sequence.

Very interesting video, especially for those who played this game on the N64 and not on roms since we weren't able to mod the game and test it like you do.
