I mean, i think the Fall Damage thing is plausible because in this form, he's entirely made of metal, so he's hella heavy, so of course he would have fall damage, imagine how his organs would react to falling very fast because of the body's weight
After more than two decades of owning this game and thinking I knew every nook and cranny, I have just learned for the first time that you can use that underwater shell in Jolly Roger Bay. Discovering something new and visually fresh about this game again after its old sense of grand mystery having long diminished has touched my inner gamer's heart!
Freezing, drowning, underwater knock back are all the same thing. Just drowning. Seems when you are either knocked back under water or go from surface to underneath the timer goes down by a tiny bit then realizes you are metal Mario and going in and out fast enough just keeps that timer going down.
freezing is slightly different as mario loses health faster and loses health even at the surface, unlike regular water which heals him at the surface while we're at it, i'd point out the shell which is very close to drowning
@@dmas7749 It actually IS drowning. Carrying a shell is the only instance of a longer time phase where the game for some reason doesn't check whether you're Metal Mario and counts down the timer no matter what. Probably the shell has its own, prolonged timer which overwrites the Metal Cap state.

The way it would make sense from a programmer's perspective is as following: The drown timer is written to as you plunge out, because it would reset if you're not Metal Mario. For Metal Mario it doesn't reset, however it's still written to, and therefore the first downcount happens despite no reset happened. No idea what exact mechanic is in play to make the drown timer count down when you get knockback.
@@ehx3419: yeah i have more of a programmer's perspective i guess i would assume that the game checks for mario's states, so it'd be something like switch (state) case (swimidle) ... if metal == 0 HP -= 1 case (swimmove) ... if metal == 0 HP -= 1 case (swimshell) ... HP -= 1 case (swimknockback) ... HP -= 1 obviously it'd also check for being at surface/cold water but you get the jist of it

Uh, how? There's no Metal Cap in Bowser in the Sky, Shifting Sand Land, the start of Dire, Dire Docks, Tall, Tall Mountain, Snowman's Land, Tiny-Huge Island, and outside Peach's Castle. You can't get to the corridor in Wet-Dry World with the Metal Cap and there's no shell spawning point next to the pier in Jolly Rodger Bay. There's no glitches I know of that can spawn a Metal Cap in these places or allow a Metal Mario to reach these places. And you definitely don't keep the Metal Cap upon leaving a course.
A microsecond of being on the splash animation registers a fraction of a healthbar unit. Spam it enough, and it ticks down once. The game has just a tiny delay before it checks you for fleshy or metal state, after the water collision ticks. As a side effect of the metal cap, it cancels out the catching a breath effect so the drown check doesn't reverse. This is likely due to the fact Metal Mario can't swim, and shouldn't heal from being at the surface water. Except in Snowman's Land, where it is just pure hypothermia damage and will drain your health regardless.
Most of these are breaking the game and things Nintendo would have programmed differently if utilized in the levels you hacked to get Metal Mario into them. That drowning one and death corner one, those were flat-out cheap! Lol!
No Metal marios were harmed making this video.
