I'm late, i know but read these advices before doing a oil change on your 86/brz. Start your car, heat up your oil (2-3min). The oil should be warm enough to not burn yourself while changing your oil so let cool the car a little bit. This will dissolve deposits and particules in suspension in your oil. And after changing your oil and before turn on the engine there is a way to cranking it without starting (and let run the engine without oil). Be sure the car is in neutral, Fully press and hold the accelerator pedal to signal the ECU not to inject fuel and turn on and let the engine crank. And as i already see in comments, don't forget to top up your oil ! Now you are ready to go !
DO NOT tighten the fumoto valve by outer hex fitting, tighten using the inner one. Outer hex is for the actual hose fitting and strips super easily. Ask me how I know.
I followed this advice years ago and now it's costing me. I got through maybe 4 to 5 oil changes before an impact took out my oil pan. The skids plate will flex and allow the valve to get hit. To it's credit the valve survived impact... but the threads on the oil pan.... Fubar
0w-20 is used for best fuel economy, not for extreme condition or high RPM. Will you carry other weights of oil for those of use who prefer a bit more protection over fuel economy? Such as 0w-30, 5w-30, or 0w-40 for boosted applications.
EXACTLY! Putting 0w20 in a car made for spirited driving and track use is just gonna wear out the engine prematurely. 5w30 or even 5w40 is recommended, especially for hot weather.
whoever changed the oil on mine last tightened the hell out of the oil filter and it took me and my brother an hour and a half and 2 trips to the auto parts store to buy oil filter wrenches
When restarting the engine after oil change, push the accelerator pedal flat to the floor - the engine will not fire, as this activates 'clear flood mode', turning off the injectors - let the starter motor turn the engine over for a few seconds. This turns over the engine at much lower rpm that starting up and running normally, avoiding any unnecessary wear on initial startup at a time when the engine is somewhat oil-starved due to removal of the old oil and installation of the new - empty - oil filter.
update 05/2019: the SX series valve is not a good fit for our twins due to the angled oil pan hole. just get the one on this video and don't torque on the hex head. Get model F108S for hex head or F108 (no hex head and no nipple for hose). Right from the fumoto manual for F-series valves: "Torque: Tighten the valve with a crescent wrench on the body of the valve* an additional 1/8 to 1/4 turn. Do not over tighten. *Do not use a wrench on the hex head if present " Great video, just do not wrench on the hex head like they did it here or you will mess up the valve. The new SX series don't have this problem and look much better. Size for the twins is 16mm diameter, 1.5 thread pitch. Model F108SX M16-1.5 SX series drain valve. Nipple dimension 3/8" if you want any accessories for it. Gonna install one as soon as break-in oil change is due.
Definitely Love my fumoto valve but I believe the clip is installed wrong. The lever goes in between the part of the clip that forks off to lock it in place.
One question, How about tropical condition without winter/snow? Should I still use those kind of oil SAE? Can I go slightly thicker and more common oil like SAE 5w-30? or 10w-40?
Yea it will be just fine. Just run a high quality oil with a high quality filter. Check it every fill up and change it every 5000 miles. Oil is cheap engines are expensive.
hey i know this has nothing to do with this video, but is there any upcoming video about body kids/front bar kits and side skirts ect for the 2017 ft86? i've got the same car as you in this video but no body kids available...
@ 4:22 he doesn't even secures the locking clip properly lol. Next bump and it will fall . Go to link in the bio and you'll see that the pin is supposed to lock with the bracket
I did my first oil change, does anyone know what the little black plastic piece is under the oil filter? It looks like a pawn from a chess board.. it was just sitting there in the oil after I unscrewed the filter..
I have a 2016 Scion FRS and am trying to get my oil changed on it but the 14mm bolt is rounded off. My husband went ahead and bought a 17mm (as recommended by nearly every auto parts store here). Is it going to fit or do we need to buy a 14mm?
If the thread pattern is the same and it is the same size bolt then yes. The head size is of little importance 14mm vs 17mm. Personally I’d go to the dealership and buy the real deal drain plug.
There's a lot to consider when wanting to change oil weight. When in doubt stick with OE recommendations, but if you want to explore other options there are some things to consider. You'll want to think about the climate you drive in most frequently and how the car is primarily used. Then we recommend getting an oil pressure gauge so you can monitor and ensure you don't have any spikes or drops.
Good video very informative but I stick with mobile one and you don't have to let the car warm up you can just hold it at about 2000 RPM for 10 seconds and all the oil will be in the engine block so you can get a proper reading on the dipstick but still great video man
What coils you guys running on that 2k17 86. I just bought one and I ran bc's before but I kinda want something different. P.S. You didn't need to loosen the filter to let all the oil out? Sorry new to this 86 scene. I was BMW before so that's why 😂
quick tip, oil drains a lot easier if you remove the oil cap or loosen the oil filter first
I love these how to videos, I just bought a brz as my first car so I always love to learn how to properly maintain the car on my own.
Congrats on your BRZ!
now you are in the meme car club. welcome!
I just got my BRZ and this is super helpful, hope our experience with our BRZ's is amazing
Yes sir, will be changing the oil on my 13' brz for the first time since buying it here in a couple weeks.
14 trying to get a job so i can get a brz as my first too
This videos are perfect for car newbs like me, thank you.

That short drain plug gets me every time when im servicing one of these cars at work lmao

how do you know? I'm holding mine in my hand and only see one spot where I could tighten it
You tighten it using a crescent wrench on the body of the valve, it is flat parallel on both sides and can take the torque.
Fumoto drain valve is definitely a game changer. No tools needed for an oil change!
just got my 86 and these video help me and give me the confidence i need to change and maintain
my car
Love my '13 BRZ. Thanks so much for the channel! It will help immensely
I love that fumoto valve. Best investment tbh
I followed this advice years ago and now it's costing me. I got through maybe 4 to 5 oil changes before an impact took out my oil pan. The skids plate will flex and allow the valve to get hit. To it's credit the valve survived impact... but the threads on the oil pan.... Fubar
I’m thinking the same thing, that thing will get scrawnched in a lowered car and around these roads
I had some oil pool in the filter "dish" with the HKS filter. Never had trouble with any other filer.
I just did first oil change on mine and the Toyota filter that was on there left a pool as well. switched to k&n

you forgot to include how to reset the next oil change trip on the dash?
whoever changed the oil on mine last tightened the hell out of the oil filter and it took me and my brother an hour and a half and 2 trips to the auto parts store to buy oil filter wrenches
poke a hole in it and it comes right out
ya just stab a screwdriver through it and twist off
Same here it was a bitch to get off, totally forgot to put on the blue crusher washer when installing the valve, oh well…
Cool video I have learned, I was looking for air filter and found on this video. I believe 86 or brz I could find air filter at the same place 👍
I have an frs what ever I need to know about it is to follow you. you guys are sooo much helpful thanks a lot

Shit, I can't believe it's been a year. Gonna change oil soon. Thanks younger me.
Definitely
Love my fumoto valve but I believe the clip is installed wrong. The lever goes in between the part of the clip that forks off to lock it in place.
correct!
I didnt even know they made those clips. Havent had an issue over the last 3 years but it couldn't hurt.
I think the new ones come with the clip. Might be wrong
Why do you suggest a 0w20 when in the official subaru shop they use a 5w30?
When you let the car run, won't the oil filter fill up? And if so, would you need to check the level again and top off?
There's usually an oil amount when doing a new oil filter and then a lower amount if not replacing the oil filter.
Any changing spark plugs videos?
yes.

One question, How about tropical condition without winter/snow? Should I still use those kind of oil SAE? Can I go slightly thicker and more common oil like SAE 5w-30? or 10w-40?
can Stock 2015 Scion FR-S use Motul 8100 eco-lite oil?
Hi thanks for the video very helpful but I have a question. If my 2017 toyota 86 has over 90k miles should I still use 0w-20?
Yea it will be just fine. Just run a high quality oil with a high quality filter. Check it every fill up and change it every 5000 miles. Oil is cheap engines are expensive.
Is there a torque spec for the oil valve
What made you pick the oem Subaru filter over the others? Is it better for the car?
It get's the job done, is cheap, and effective.
I use oem Toyota
The black oil filter that’s a Tokyo Roki definitely is the blue Subaru filter is a garbage fram filter.

is that an alcantara dash cover piece?
Royal purple all the way!
I did my first oil change, does anyone know what the little black plastic piece is under the oil filter? It looks like a pawn from a chess board.. it was just sitting there in the oil after I unscrewed the filter..
Could you guys do the same video for transmission oil and differential? It helps a lot! Thanks!
We sure can!

i have an aftermarket air intake and a catback exhaust.. do i still stick with ow-20 oil? please i need help

THE OIL FILTER USES OIL TOO SO TOP UP AFTER RUNNING
Don't you have to reset the computer when your done with the oil change
did you use all 6 motul 8100?
OMG do you stock the recaro sportster cs seats!?
Sure do
Does it void the warranty of your car
Why would it? It's just a drain plug
Ah sometimes with warranties you have to get the service booked stamped by the dealer / an approved mechanic to keep the warranty. I would check.
How many liters are needed?
It's written in the owner's manual

could u please write it down as how many Km when u miles?
It takes less than 10 seconds to remove the factory drain plug, just saying..
But when it’s that short and I’m not that good at it hopefully gonna save me from a mess
Man I wish I was complaining about an oil change if I had a hoist lift 🙄
hi im from philippines, should i stick to a 0w20? any advice?
Isn't the stock drain plug magnetic?
nice way for someone to pull on a prank on you and let all your oil out !
If your friends pull those “pranks” on you they’re not your friends
Does the oil plug require a crush washer?
Millers Oils CFS 0w30 NT+ is the best For This engine !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Why?
Because Millers has patented NT + technology
Nobody has a ninny in her portfolio
Motul is great too but Millers is the best
sick commercial. I'll go out on a limb and say that for the vast majority of daily driven toyobaru br-s' out there, oem oil is the best
How do these other oils fair against Millers?
I prefer Amsoil great vid though
what happens if I use 0-40 motor oils?
Kawai Sit it'll blow sir
Water bottle= 5 cents. 🤔🤔 Naah bro.
Nah, I’m gonna go TRD for my Toyota
Step 1: Get a Car Shop
Mfs sell a product for everything
Motul lol
