Shooting the M1 Garand out to 500 yards with iron sights.
Parameters: 2x shots per target from 150y to 500y, segmented per 50 yds.
Rifle was a M1 Garand (CMP), built in 1944 by Sprinfield Armory (the government arsenal). Shot with a custom M2 custom load ammunition using 155gr Palma Match projectiles.

Henry was looking in his log book because the rear sight elevation markings were corroded off, and difficult to read, so that he needed to write down the click adjustments between distances from the internet.

When you consider the pressure to rapidly manufacture the Garand in such enormous quantities during the war years, it's truly amazing that they managed to put out such a quality weapon.
I think that was the real miracle of US manufacturing in World War 2, everyone had to cut serious corners to keep up, the US not only supplied itself it reequipped whole nations.
well the rifle was developed in peace time from 1923 to 1936, so by the time Pearl Harbor happened, the M1 was long since perfected into what we know it as

I served in the USMC 1958-1964 when the M1 Garand was the T.O. weapon. Virtually ALL Marines made up their scores at the 500 yard line by shooting a possible with standard ammo and standard issue rife. We did not use a rest, rather the sling. FYI When we were issued our rifles we all received sandpaper and boiled linseed oil. The stocks were sanded down and may coats of BOILED linseed oil was hand rubbed in until the stock looked as though it was varnished. This made it virtually impervious to humidity changes.
Larry, thanks for writing. As a firearms historian and military historian, I have often wondered if GIs and Marines treated their wood-stocked rifles in any way to better-handle the moisture, humidity and heat encountered in the field. Now, thanks to you, I have an answer. Semper Fi, Marine....
Served 2006-2010, did my qual with iron sights the first 2 years, did great with the m16-a2(boot) and A4 in the fleet. But after 2 years they let us use our acogs which I thought was stupid. But hey I still used mine. And we still had to just lay with no rest at 500yds, but I can't quite remember because my last year I didnt do my rifle qual and they told me the can use bipods(mounted hand grip with retractable bipod) now at 500... ..kinda disappointing with all the standards dropping as fast as they are now. I have no clue what they do now. I dont think they even use the M16 A2 in boot anymore. Another note, I just bought an Garand manufactured in 1953 by SA, it served in korea
StraightWhite Male They allow you to use grips (not touching ground) on table one now but you are not allowed to use artificial support such as the bipod.

When shooting your target and hitting them at 500 yards with iron sights mattered. Nice shooting.

More like when shooting your target and hitting them at 500 yards with iron sights was expected by US marksmanship doctrine, statistically speaking most shooting engagements happened within 300 yards (some figure of that). The semiautomatic action alone makes this a superior rifle to most anything anyone else had in WWII (standard issue wise).
@@GreenPatriot69 Well not exactly. The soviets had the SVT-38 and 40s before the war even started, although they didn't have a very large number of them until later on in the war. The Germans also got the Gewehr-43(and earlier variants) later on so it's not like the americans were the only ones with self-loading rifles. Whether the M1 was actually better than either of those i can't comment as i haven't fired any of them.

this is an old post, but.... You don't want to focus on the target. You'll shoot much higher scores focusing on the front post and let the target be a fuzz ball which sits on top of the sight blade.

I had the oppurtunity to shoot with this magnificent combat rifle when I was doing my military service in the Greek navy early '90s. It is not just a gun it's a piece of history.

So cool. I was in the Royal Netherlands Army in 1977. My initial training rifle was the FAL. After that i switched to the M1. Not many units used it anymore. But ohh my. It was so much more accurate over the FAL. I loved it.
Having both, I would agree with you. I shot a 20L. spray jug filled with water at 1000yds with the M!.. I fired 16 rounds at it and was hitting all around and thought I had missed with all of them, but about 5 minutes later we noticed the water level in the jug was going down. Later we had a mad minute and about 10 of us fired at the side of a coulee hill. The Fal got in 40 rounds and the dust hung in the air for a long time. What a waste of ammo, but was it ever fun.
This M1 blows my mind all the time. When I was new to shooting I could bullseye with this rifle only. I've even had the front sight fall off, and somehow it still retained it zero after i screwed it back on. It might be the coolest gun I own.
Back in the early 2000's, i was invited to a local M1 garand match. Never having handled or shot a Garand before, i was a bit nervous. After all five stages, i felt really good about my performance. With a score of 375 x1 i landed 2nd place. The veteran shooters were slightly amazed. It just goes to show, these rifles are awesome. In 04 ,i got a Danish SA with a VAR barrel from the CMP for $425. Its a mix match gun, even has some PB parts.
Love it! These Garands simply want to shoot!
Those VAR barrels are highly prized by high powered military rifle competitors. Good steel in those barrels and very accurate.
@@topturretgunner I picked up a garand at a local gun show for a pretty penny at 1k but to my excitement, learned it had danish VAR barrel once I was taking it apart and cleaning it 😊

@@topturretgunner it seems that way! I've been trying to stock up on the old surplus ammo so I can reload my own some day. I've noticed mine seems to dent the neck of the brass slightly. Is that somewhat common. I believe the surplus brass is superior to today's or so I've been told.

Man, these vids are becoming crack for me. You don't see too many gun channels where the capabilities of the weapon system is well illustrated. All guns on any channel should be put through its paces, out to at least 750yds. If I ever decide to make my own channel, I would definitely follow this layout in some form or another. Doing table top reviews, shallow 100yd accuracy tests, and mag-dumps with dramatic audiomachine background music, really doesn't cut it for me anymore. Don't get me wrong...LOVE me some Audiomachine, but I don't care about how awesome your kit is, when you haven't shown what it can do past 20-100yds. I'm really diggin' this format, and I hope to see many more weapons platforms presented on this channel! These guys could sell a lot of weapon systems without even trying! More vids please!!!
The range access is one issue which I have. Then an extra body willing to help. Video camera up to the task and editing. Time to drive and edit video software sucks. I have a high volume of stuff to review and configurations if I think that could lots of videos.
MrHemimechanic2 Yeah I understand, not everyone has access to a 1000yd range. That went completely over my head, not to mention a lot of content creators have day jobs. Truth is, the Range closest to where I live( about 40min way) only goes out to 550yds and the rule is that you have to have a +1 to be a spotter( cause there's an orchard/ranch at the top of the hill...). I work long hours so I have more ammo than I do rangetime. Plus, I'm not tech savvy either, which is why I haven't bothered to make my own channel. Who knows...maybe that'll change here in the NEAR future! One suggestion I could make, is for people to check out online maps of public lands that aren't to far away with a decent amount of clear space for safety purposes. Finding out where hunters go to bag small & medium sized game, would be of great help. As far as I know, if you live in the North,Mid or SouthWest, you've got more options than you might think! Some steel targets, some ammo, food and gas is all you need, so plan ahead!!! Who knows, maybe you'll find a secluded area you could make your own!!

9-Hole Reviews Sadly I'm up in the NorthWest, Central Washington to be exact. An OTR driver by trade, 10-14 days out and 2 days @ home. I hit the range as often as I can to "destress", if you know what I mean! But that's the main reason for having so much ammo and so little rangetime. Its no SO bad, my "work-to-ammo ratio" stays in the positive, that way I always have some ammo to burn when I get home!!! Thank you, we do appreciate the invite!!!

That never really was an issue I talked to my father about it .he fought World War II with that rifle he said that was never an issue too many other sounds going on at once.

This vid reminds me. When I went shooting for the first time, I shot an M1 Garand. about a week later, I called my grandfather, who was a WW2 veteran. I told him I shot an M1 Garand, and his response was "Thats a powerful weapon! You could hit a target at 1000 yards with that thing!" After seeing Mr. Chan hit a target at 500 yards with ease, I have no doubt citing a target at 1000 yards is definitely possible for a skilled shooter.
@ James Valenti: Sure, the 1,000 yard mark is well within the capabilities of the M-1 and its potent 30-06 cartridge. In the present day, there's a guy in California - by the screen-name of Mag30th - who posts on You Tube (or once did), who takes his iron-sighted Garand out to 1,000 yards and scores hits on a steel plate with boring regularity. He uses a target camera to track his shots, or a spotter, or both. The range where he goes is in the Sierras it looks like, since it is mountainous and dry. The dust splash helps him track shots, too. Going back to the Korean War, Marine Staff Sergeant John Boitnott and his spotter got confirmed enemy kills at up to 1250 yards using a scoped M-1C. So definitely, it can be done....

He's not exaggerating in the least. There are shooters who routinely target steel plates at 1,000 yards using iron sighted M-1s, and score hits with almost boring regularity. They need a spotter or target camera system to spot their shots at that range, but the rifle and sights are perfectly capable of that sort of performance if they are in good shape and well-maintained, and the rifle is fed good ammo.
The top-scoring USMC sniper of the Korean War, Staff Sergeant John Boitnott, and his spotter - scored nine confirmed communist kills in as many days - with the longest confirmed shot made at 1250 yards. What makes it so impressive is that his M-1C was equipped with a scope of only 2-2.5x power.
Your grandfather can confirm that the M-1's iron sights were graduated out to 1200 yards, which was about the maximum effective range for M2 150-grain Ball/FMJ ammo against a point target. Many precision sharpshooters and snipers used black-tipped armor-piercing ammo, since it was somewhat heavier (~ 173-grains) and more aerodynamic than garden-variety FMJ. There really wasn't any match ammo issued or anything like that in Korea or WW2, so the troops did the best they could with what they had.

In the Danish army in the 70ies I learned how to shoot with one of those. 30-06 is one of my favorite cartridges and I got an XTR Featherweight chambered for that as well. Still I love the feel of the Garand M1 and how it shoots.

I would definitely love to see this the reason I me and my friends watch these is to see how much gun we can get for the money especially on surplus guns. We all have our awesome AR15's and expensive 6.5 creedmores but what we really want to see is if we can hone our skill cheaper and with fun. The M1 carbine would be amazing to watch the capabilities of the weapon system
Please show the M1 carbine it will shut allot of people up like someone told me and many videos will show that the SKS is a 5moa weapon system at 100 yards yet I get a 3 to a 2 1/2 inch group at 100
I know this is an old post, but...
I just got back from the range this morning with my winchester m1 carbine. 300 yard 10" gong I was probably 65-70% on with the wind. I tagged a full size ipsc silhouette at 400 maybe 4-5 out of 20. Doesnt swing the target much once you get past 250.
I didnt attempt any beyond that...but I'm sure I could lob a few in eventually. A pickup truck sized target at 500 would be in trouble though...
@@jonathonschram3429 if you have an m1 carbine, you should be using that radio or mortar you also have to engage the targets beyond 300yards!

Is what an enemy soldier would wait to hear as it gave away that you were empty. To combat this, GI's would keep a clip handy, and throw it on the ground to give the appearance that you were empty, then shoot the opponent when they broke cover. Of course I wasn't there, but have heard of this.
@@JDSFLA anecdotal farce, you can't hear the clip ejecting or hitting a solid object after the report of a 30-06 in close proximity. Your ears will still be ringing. Keep in mind hearing protection wasn't really considered important for the infantry till more modern times.

@@blairbuskirk5460 Also, in reference to this anecdote, were these instances 1-vs-1 duals? Combat in WWII was platoon or squad-based. There would be multiple, maybe even several dozen, rifles engaging targets. Even if the enemy heard a single rifle *ping* empty, charging into a volley of .30 cal rifle fire would be a war-ending mistake.
Man I just love these videos. The various rifles. The quality shooting, and the spotter/camera work. I'm always glad to see your videos show up. I've got an M1 but yours looks much nicer than mine.
I bought my Garand sight unseen and took it to the range that weekend and was dead on at 100 yds. I went to 200 yds and was still on so I went to the 300-yard line which maxed at the range we were shooting on and set the elevation for 300 and was ringing a 7-inch diamond steel target every shot. I shot it maybe 20 times that day. I took it to a CMP match the next weekend and came in third. This was my first match and the second time shooting the rifle. It is very accurate and a pleasure to shoot.

@@mastisu Good thinking concept. I have a Dec '43 Springfield, and after about 100 rounds the clips started ejecting after the 5th shot. Through hours of vetting forums, I found the solution DEEEEP in the guts of the Garand knowledge base. It was combination of the bullet guide and follower arm. So those were replaced, along with follower slide, all srpings, ejector clip spring, heavier op rod, trigger assembly spring which was a bitch and a half to replace...alligning all 3 points and putting the tiny pin back through...make sure the extractor arm isn't upside down or it's doomsday inside trigger assembly, clip latch spring...all the shit that moves. Fixed it right up. True. Parts, Grease & Bullets make that kitten purr!! The grease chart from Garand Parts.com or whatever has many, many grease points most people don't know about.

@@9HoleReviews yeah, very hard to beat. U guy should do a vid on an M1a/M14. It has a very similar sighting arrangement and was based off of the M1 Garand design. Unless u have done one already. lol.

@@9HoleReviews - M1 Thumb happened primarily when performing the "Ready, Port, Arms" portion of Inspection Arms. If you're sending it downrange, you're all good brother.
THE KING OF THEM ALL!!! Everything since has just been trying to find a cheaper way of doing the same thing, NO ONE has ever made a better set of sights on a basic issue infantry rifle, from a by gone era when weapons were made of forged steel and beautiful American black walnut, it's incredible when you think they they put one of those in the hands of every infantryman, the Axis never stood a chance.
The US in the 1950s was the richest country in the world it had a standard of living that people cannot even come close today. A factory workers salary in that era could buy a house, car and produce long term savings.
In the 1940s the US was a powerhouse economically and industrially.

hahah! I LOL'ed. Really not trying to rag on the standard FAL sights. We literally just shot the FAL paratrooper and the sights only had it from 150-250m... that's it.

I have a James river M14 and James river bm59. Both have the same sight system and are FAR superior to the Fal.
Next will be a M1 Garand on my bucket List 😁

Okay, now take that M1 grand and lug it around with all its ammo and clips, and use it in close quarters the way you can with an FAL. M1 Garand is massively over rated. The M1 garand and M14 have both been out used by the FAL for good reason. Its a much better designed rifle, but go ahead and keep those sights.

I qualified with a M-14 in Basic training in 1966, I never missed a 350 meter target or a 400 meter target, the Iron sights were incredible.

Classic battle rifle... tacticool has its place but nothing like the aesthetic appeal of a Garand wrapped in walnut or an M14 variant in the Big Red Walnut Stock. Aim small / Miss small. The simplicity of a great set of iron sights.

Even a well worn out M39 should be capable out to 500 yards with ease. Max I had mine out was 365 yards a 10 inch group using Russian 1952 ammo. Find where she shoots with a spotter and it's a tack driver.

Best firearm I have ever owned. I just restored a 1903 a3 and had a 8x Malcolm scope installed. Now all I have to do is rehab my injuries and get back out there with both of my rifles. Great shooting.

Every time he reloaded he didn't put the end of his palm on the charging handle and I was screaming in my head "Please no Garand thumb".
If you notice he had to slap the charging handle forward in those cases. Palm down was just a faster way to get the gun running. You have to be real inattentive to get Garand thumb.
If you keep ahold of the top round in the clip with your thumb, the bolt won't get you since you're holding it open with the round. That's the trick to reloading M1 quicker without having to use palm and with no worry of garand thumb.

@@leonsong3284 Have you seen the footage of African and Middle Eastern fire fights? Half the time the "fighters" are not even using the sights especially when it comes to Africans. Africans were losing gunfights in Rhodesia even when they were outnumbering Europeans by many times.

@@leonsong3284 18 Americans died compared to 1500-3000 Somalis. You call that victory? And most of the deaths on American side were from running out of bullets after being stranded in Mogadishu without any supplies and surrounded by several thousand fighters.

The Coast Guard was the last branch to use the M1… well into the 1970’s and beyond. I took second place in the Ninth District rifle competition, using an off the rack rifle and that wonderful canvas sling. If you didn’t have a blood ring around your bicep, you knew you didn’t have the sling tight enough. At the 200 and 300 range, if you slinged up correctly, the sights would settle on target, round after round. As my grandkids finish college (girls) or complete their military obligation (boys), they will each get a beautiful M1 and enough Lake City ball ammo to invade a banana republic.

Maelstrom8 thanks! This is my opinion: I think the M1 Garand sight system is fine enough for target shooting but retains the ruggedness for field use and is easily adjusted in stress. Most sight systems have trouble balancing those aspects.
Copy that. I've heard them called the best irons ever made many times but as I haven't had the pleasure of shooting one yet, I never understood why. Thanks for the clarification and the great videos!

Qualified with both the M1 Garand and M14 in the early sixties. Shot in the 220s. Loved the M1.

Madbagger absolutely. It killed a USO scope earlier, otherwise we would have already filmed it. That was operator error too... the QD mount was fitted onto an AR10 then returned to the SCAR and I didn’t know it was loose as a goose. Shot it and the EREK mechanism broke. USO on repair!

My stance on the "Which WWII main battle rifle was best" pissing match argument: It's the Garand hands down for me. 1. Semi auto. 2. Aperture sights. 3. Semi auto. 4. Long sight radius. 5. Semi Auto. 6. Fully adjustable sights. 7. Semi auto.
I should mention that one of those "semi auto" points also means that because it is an auto loader, the recoil is substantially less than it otherwise would be. That is a bonus.
Enbloc clip is quicker than stripper clips as well, though it is imperative to not deform the feed lips on the enbloc clip. Honestly the M1 Garrand is not too far behind the curve in a squad on squad encounter even against modern equipment, even less so as group size increases. With good firing order you can maintain a field of fire just as well as guys with anything less than a belt fed machine gun
@ Bill Melater: There were other nations which had SLRs during the war - Sweden had the Lgungman, Germany the G43, and the USSR the SVT40. All employed box magazines, in contrast to the M-1's en-bloc clips, but frittered that advantage away by using stripper clips (chargers) to refill the mag when it emptied. Honorable mention to the FN49, a.k.a. SAFN, of 1949, whose development was interrupted by the war and not completed until afterwards. Mexico had employed the Mondragon semi-automatic rifle as far back as WWI, but it was never issued in sufficient numbers to qualify as a major weapon. So, the Garand got there first and got there best.

@@GeorgiaBoy1961 I'd take the M1's en bloc loading system over the all those guns even with plenty of loaded magazines available, any day. The en blocs are very easy to get in, no 'rocking' or fiddling necessary to fit it in like the magazines, there is no confusion whether your gun is empty or not, no need to worry about not losing those magazines, etc it just works.

Had a friend whose grandfather had a rifle duel with six Germans. They were situated along a brick wall quite a way off. He was the one with a rifle capable of reaching out that far. I'm sure the auto loading helped. As he had six confirmed kills. Won a bronze star for that action.
7,92x57 will reach out, the standard issue ball was more aerodynamic than -06 ball.

Yes 30-06 is a little bit bigger than 308
It's the exact same caliber of projectile. And 150 grain was the standard load, however 168gr hpbt match Hornaday bullets are my choice for longer range use.
Projectiles heavier than 150 gr are not recommended for the M1 Garand. Shooting large numbers of heavy bullets will eventually wear out and damage the control linkage.
@@Reloader449 Actually this has been kinda debunked. The M1 was to take the standard military rounds of the day and M2 Ball was only one of those. Look up the different 30-06 rounds that were available in WWII. M1 Ball is about 174gr I think. Somewhere in there.

I went to the range today with my M1 with old WW2 surplus ammo and hit 10 out of 10 at 500 yards. I am too old to get in the prone so I had to bench shoot. Thank you USMC for the training. 1963 - 1967 Semper Fi.

There have been a lot of white tail deer and elk killed with these guns since WW2.
I remember historian the late Stephen Ambrose telling, in his book, "Citizen Soldiers," I believe - how a group of WWII veteran GI's near his (Ambrose's) home in Wisconsin when he was a kid, would get together every fall to deer hunt - as a squad, under the command of their old sergeant, just as during the war. They'd have one man stationed in a tree stand or whatever, and the other men would form a skirmish line and advance-driving the deer toward the stand. Once that man had his deer, he'd rotate out and someone else would take his place - until everyone had his deer. That story always stayed with me...

@@berserg5599 1. Soldiers travel in groups. 2. Did you notice that it usually took our shooter about 2 seconds to reload? If he'd had to pull them out of a pouch you could double that. 3. If you can hear a ping when a lot of guys with major caliber rifles are shooting you are a very unique person.

@@berserg5599 They're dead. Most of them died after our forces invaded the islands they were holding. The risk was never to the fingers. When you take your thumb off the end block the action closes. If you are slow your thumb will be slammed reminding you to move faster or use the side of you hand to block the action until you can get your thumb out of the way. People who know what they are doing don't get their thumbs slammed.
People who have fired both the M1 and M14 don't seem to be convinced the M15 has much if any advantage over the M1 even though the M14 uses a 20 round magazine. YMMV.
@@berserg5599 You do know that is a myth. Watch Bloke On The Range's video about it. There is no way the enemy will hear that little ping from 100 yards away with all the battlefield noise, and it only takes seconds to reload. It didnt happen.

I hate it when a single round out of the clip doesnt seat right and pokes out a little too far screwing up your reload. Then as you try to figure out why the clip wont go in everyone starts to laugh and the "this isnt call of duty, this is real life" jokes start flying left and right.

@@9HoleReviews Yeah that is why many war used Garand Stocks are dinged, banged up, and pock marked. GIs would check that the rounds of the clip were seated properly by smacking the clip of rounds against the wood stock. In the heat of battle you need those babies packed tight and loaded quick, so you used the closest surface at hand. The stock itself. So whenever I see a USGI M1 stock that is beat to hell, I never rag on it's looks.

Great shooting.
Uncle Sam taught me to shoot at Ft Benning, GA, in the summer of 1960 with the M-1, a well used and lightly abused implement. Scored Sharpshooter, which was good for a guy who had only shot a .22, and that infrequently. When assigned to a unit, my TO&E weapon was the M-1 carbine. Loved both of my M-1 experiences.
