    The Enfield No.4 Mk1/2 was the workhorse of the British Commonwealth... and also one of my favorite rifles to shoot. This one is even missing some rifling... how well does it shoot to 500yards?
    Ammunition used: German MEN .303 British, these were loaded very close to British Radway Green Mark VII 174grain .303 cartridges.

      Do you zero the No. 4 at 100 yard like other rifles? Even though the battle aperture is set for 300 yds?

    • @towarzyszbeagle6866
      @towarzyszbeagle6866 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@tylerroehl1968 there's a specific zeroing target for use at 30 yards. It consists of a small semi circle with a ladder running up from it which allows you to check your vertical adjustment of each sight setting by aiming at the semi circle.
      You can find PDF images out there of this target easily via Google. However the thing is it's set up for MKVII ball. So unless that's what you're shooting it's not all that useful.
      If you have a rifle with the singer sight I believe each click of the elevation screw is 1 MOA at 100 yards. Armed with that information it's not to hard to pick commercial ammo you like and work out your adjustments for various ranges.
      I suggest sticking with 180gr loads of you're shooting commercial. I find being closer to the military loading (174gr) that they shoot much closer to the sight settings. There's a lot of 150gr stuff out there but it tends to shoot very high.

      According to book British snipers to the Reich; author reveals when mk 7 bullet falls below 2000 fps your effected by windage; this accounts for your shots missed at 350 yards; the Enfield allows for front sight be adjusted for windage or do as you did 9 mile to adjust by pulling barrel over a little.

    The first full bore rifle I ever fired was a Lee Enfield Mk. 4. I was thirteen years old. With iron sights, at 300 yards, I was hitting bullseye after bullseye. My father had used one of these in WWII. He was impressed.

They had originally been in service with the Indian Army and prior to that with the British Army. I made many friends in the U.K. M.O.D. that also knew the beauty of this weapon.

      @ Yousef Marzog this is one of the few firearm channels I watch anymore. Generally I find shooting military rifles with iron sights at practical targets, and practical distances such as these far more interesting than the usual TH-cam fare (i.e., watching 80-95% of shooters on TH-cam blast away with red dots at 15 meters or shooting 3 round sub-MOA "groups" on paper).

    • @YousefAlghadouri
      @YousefAlghadouri 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@dexm2010 I totally agree with you because in actuality in real military settings red dot sights in general(reflex sights, prismatic scopes, holographic sights) are a luxury so to speak. your standard issue rifle will be given to you without any of the optics mentioned and you will be forced to use iron sights and, to be honest, a shooter should improve his accuracy by using iron sights and shooting at long distances not what like you said 15 meters. in conclusion red sights don't make you more accurate it only increases your combat effectiveness and the proof of that is sometimes a well-camouflaged target can missed a lot of times even with an optic but if the shooter was good and knows how to properly operate a red dot sight he will hit that target even in long ranges.

One time they had us simulate battle conditions by running 100 yds towards the targets then firing off five rounds. Couldn't hit a thing as I couldn't keep the rifle still. And of course, the targets weren't firing back. It's a wonder anyone gets shot at all.

      @@txrick4879 Rear sight should ALWAYS be out of focus for irons, no matter what firearm. Focus INTENTLY on the front sight post; the target will become blurry, and you just aim at the center of the blur. I run a A2/A3 style carry handle rear sight on my 16" barrel AR-15 with a MBUIS Pro up front, post set to the narrow profile, and painted a vibrant florescent orange to give my eyes something to really focus on.
      With practice, I'm now hitting a 18" gong at 450 yards like clockwork, and I can hit the 8" popper next to it pretty regularly.
      Unless you have cataracts, eyesight isn't an issue if you select frames that are round enough to let you see clearly down the sights (glasses that are more flat across the top may be more stylish, but suck for shooting). Also be sure to get your lens prescription updated at least once a year. Significant change in your diet (especially sugar consumption if you're diabetic, even type 2) can change your eyes enough that your prescription can become out of date. Personally, I can't stand red dot sights because my astigmatism is most noticeable with points of light (looks like a star burst instead of a dot, even with corrective lenses). It's not noticeable at all when using irons, at least for me.
      Granted, I'm 35, so I can't say what it's like to have 65-year-old eyes, but from your post, it's clear you never learned the fundamentals of marksmanship. Not a criticism, just an observation, as anyone who's learned the fundamentals knows for irons the front sight post must always be in complete focus, and if looking through a scope, the crosshairs must be in complete focus. You can try to cheese your way around obeying these fundamentals, but your accuracy won't be as good as it could be if obeying the fundamentals.
      Here's an excellent multi-part video on the subject that the US Army Marksmanship Unit uploaded a while back. It's a good starting point, but no substitute for an in person trainer who can help and evaluate you directly. Definitely watch this series, as it can really help you, and won't cost you a dime: th-cam.com/video/QAZP0QvFBy0/w-d-xo.html

    With all the fancy-shmancy optics on the market today, I feel like too many people immediately go with a scope or RDS, and deny themselves the incredibly potent skill of iron sight mastery. I started shooting for the first time in 2019, and wasn't very good. I decided to set aside all the expensive glass, and just work on the fundamentals. Hell, if the White Death could do all that damage with irons, they must be better than you'd think, and holy crap, I've fallen in love with irons and refuse to use a scope for any target 500 yards or closer, 'cause you don't need a scope to hit targets with what I call "combat accuracy" at those ranges if you understand how to use irons. Irons also give you unmatched sight picture, eliminating all the obstructions caused by the housing around RDS optics, and eliminates the tendency to develop tunnel vision with scopes.
    If you haven't learned irons, do yourself a solid, and master them. Just try the irons, but do it right, and learn how. Here's a good, free resource to get you started: th-cam.com/video/QAZP0QvFBy0/w-d-xo.html

    Some of the best sights ever fitted to a battle rifle is that Mk1 micrometer rear sight. Love the No4 was given one for my 16th Bday back when you could pick them out of a barrel at the gun store and still have it.

    • @3of11
      @3of11 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      jeremy reed yup. While the M1 garand sights are More adjustable (Wind and elev knobs... great for target). For battle you want simple elevation clicks only. And close battle you want that ghost ring. Also just as important that post is the exact perfect width and squared off. Also the protector ears don’t get in the way of the sight picture and allow plenty of light onto the front post.

    • @JReed305
      @JReed305 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@3of11 Exactly! The M1 has great target sights, but windage isn't something normally thought of when bullets are coming back at you. The Enfield strands as the only bolt action battle rifle of both World Wars. The Germans used a hunting rifle and the Americans used a target rifle. The M1 was a mix of a battle and target rifle.

    • @JReed305
      @JReed305 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@randymagnum143 I didn't say they weren't great sights, but for a battle rifle the Mk1 Enfield sights are better. The American rifle sights reflect our obsession with target accuracy where as the British realized that 4" or less at 100 yards was good enough to poke holes in bad guys.

    • @randymagnum143
      @randymagnum143 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@JReed305 is there any appreciable difference between the #4 rear sight and p14/m1917 sight? I'm going to stick with my answer. They are the easiest to zero, have the best sight picture, and are well protected. They aren't moving unless you move them. A national match aperture for target work, and the standard is perfect except for low light. The only thing I find usable in low light is a red dot, or night vision.

    • @JReed305
      @JReed305 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@randymagnum143 the main difference is the windage which is great, but for a purely battle rifle stance is more cost with no increase in performance in the field. The p14 sights are awesome for a marksmanship stance.

    I’ve owned three No1 mk iii. They all drifted as the barrel got hot. Started around the sixth round when less than a few seconds apart. Did that even with modern powder in hand loads. Same with the No4 I owned.
    They used to be so cheap you could shoot out the barrel and just buy another rifle. New barrels cost more than the rifles did. Now not so much.
