    Every year during hunting season, men sit around campfires and talk about how far they can hit a deer with their hunting rifle. Well... what is the combat effectiveness of the hunting rifle? What type of effect does heat have on the thin barrels?
    How exactly true is the famous 1984 documentary, "Red Dawn" with a group of high school students defending themselves with hunting rifles (like this Savage Model 110) and shotguns against the Russians? We find out.

      Winchester 1894(pre-'64) and some cheap Rem/Win/Fed 170gr soft points. Mine has a 26" full octagonal barrel with semi buckhorn rears and front blade about the thickness of a driver license, for a panoramic sight picture. To really bring home how things have changed, that was the 'sport' model. Ive taken a deer at almost 300yd with it, with a clean shoulder shot. It through-and-through'd and I found the mushroomed bullet on the ground, a few feet away. Perfect bullet performance.

    Still a great pump gun even though it is mostly plastic, th-cam.com/users/postUgkxh4su9YgU1tWmjikirWcKJbjsFLEU62Bc but with care it will last a long time. It would be neat if Crosman would make a commemorative version of this with real wood stock, but of course it would weigh more and cost more, but hey, it would be cool. The included scope is more of a toy, but it does work for backyard plinking. I prefer to use pellets for greater accuracy, but BBs are just as good for plinking. This is not a Red Ryder folks; fully pumped it is 3 times the power of a Red Ryder and can be dangerous if not handled properly. Be safe out there.

    • @matter968
      @matter968 4 ปีที่แล้ว +73

      @@Tool683 Ammo might have played a part, but rifles were chosen for sniper use based on their performance on the range. Given that there was a lot of discrepancy in the accuracy of rifles I would say it had mostly to do with production and design. Having collected military rifles for a while now ranging from WWI to the Vietnam era, I would say that the difference in accuracy from old rifles come from barrel production methods and more importantly the commonality of free-floated barrels. Heat warping from successive firing on a non free-floated barrel is much more than you would think especially when the guns had wood stocks.

    • @GeorgiaBoy1961
      @GeorgiaBoy1961 4 ปีที่แล้ว +51

      @@matter968 - Competition shooters and armorers from the U.S. Army and Marine Corps have been accurizing rifles for service rifle matches for a very long time, probably since the 1920s. A great deal was learned about how to free-float barrels, polish and precisely-fit components, bed actions, and get triggers set up properly. Don't forget too, that some rifles don't need to be free-floated to attain excellent accuracy. Some barrels and actions are capable of fine accuracy right off the production line. Civilian George Farr used one of them to shoot seventy-one consecutive bull's-eyes in the 1,000 yard matches at Camp Perry in 1921 - and that was using issue, factory ammo and iron sights! In those days, exceptionally-accurate Springfield M1903s were called "Star Gauge" Springfields, and were specially-marked to denote their being suitable for match-grade use. Free-floating a wood-stocked rifle like a M1903 involved removing wood everywhere along the barrel except where it joined the receiver and right at the muzzle. Ammunition quality always plays a big part in high-quality, consistent results. Even a very accurate well-set up rifle can fail to fulfill expectations with sub-standard ammunition. During WWII and Korea, Army and Marine snipers using rifles chambered in 30-06 often used armor-piercing rounds instead of match-grade ammunition, as a sort of substitute standard, given how hard it was to obtain match-grade ammunition at the front. Preferably from the same lot, so that consistency from cartridge to cartridge was as good as possible. '06 AP (black tip) was apparently quite accurate, since there were some successful sharpshooters using it in both conflicts.

    • @GeorgiaBoy1961
      @GeorgiaBoy1961 4 ปีที่แล้ว +23

      Almost certainly so. As recently as the Vietnam conflict, when in the mid-1960s, the Marine Corps were changing over from Winchester M70's to Remington 700's, the accuracy benchmark Remington had to meet with its M700 and M118 7.62 NATO 173-grain match was around 2-3 moa, if memory serves. Even budget bolt gun today are capable of meeting, if not exceeding, that accuracy standard, provided with high-quality ammunition, that is.

    I can say with absolute certainty after hunting for 20 years and being only 35 years old that there’s a movement within the hunting community that heading more towards the “tactical” end of things. Not to say that most of us dragging the the latest and greatest sniping equipment up into our tree stands but it’s certainly not uncommon for us to use rifles with very solid chassis, heavier barrels, muzzle brakes or suppressors, higher quality optics, match grade ammunition, etc. At the end of the day it’s definitely a balance game and it depends on what you are hunting and the ranges that you are hunting at but the hunting community and especially a lot of the younger generations of hunters recognize the benefits to the higher end equipment and we are using it more and more where it makes sense. After all we aren’t just punching holes in paper, we are trying to humanely end an animals life. Accuracy should count for us as much as it does for anyone.

    It's amazing to see the advancement of technology in rifles and optics since WW2 where our 'budget' hunting rifles are close to, if not surpassing the rifles and optics of the war. Ballistics and bullet technology play a role as well and it certainly is interesting to see how widely adopted new products and training have caused this leap. My savage 110 Switchback is a pretty accurate rifle, it's my go to for target shooting and deer hunting. 6.5 Creedmoor seems like a good match for it too. It's a somewhat heavy rifle, but not cumbersome. It fits a decent scope, has a detachable magazine and is good for about 1.5-2.0 MOA overall. Yes the stock is a little bendy, and it sometimes has extraction and ejection problems but that doesn't make it bad. Really adore mine. He used a scoped M-1 D model to take out communist soldiers at ranges up to 1250 yards - and that's using the comparatively primitive 2.5xpower Lyman Alaskan scope issued with the rifle. He rose to Master Gunnery Sergeant before retiring from the Corps in 1971. He was a two-war man, having served in WWII and Korea. Don't think he served in Vietnam during that conflict, based on what biographical data I can find. He was in the military police as his MOS by then. He said the M1 was a solid man killer and the 30-06 was at least half the equation. Rest in peace John Boitnott, well done.

      @@Garandasaurus - Thanks for writing. An uncle on my wife's side of the family was a combat infantryman in Korea, U.S. Army. He fought in some of the toughest fighting of the war when the Chinese first came in, and ultimately made it home only after being badly-wounded. He was one of the only men in his platoon to survive Chinese human wave attacks. I helped this gentleman get his Purple Heart after a bureaucratic snafu had denied it to him back then. We spoke about his experiences one time, and he told me in no uncertain terms that if it wasn't for his faithful M-1, he doubted he'd have made it home. I'm sure many Marines and GIs felt that same way.... BTW, I wish I'd been a Marine. If I had life to live over again, I'd join the Corps. I tried to get in after 9-11, first as a trigger-puller and then - since I have civilian medical skills - as a FMF Corpsman. A year too old and unable to get an age waiver. Anyway, I have a ton of respect for Marines and their Docs...

      @Garandasaurus 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Wow, that's a pretty awesome account. My Sergeant said whole companies were virtually annihilated by the Chinese attacks. He loved how the M1 worked in severe cold, and kept shooting when overheated and on fire. They shot till the handguards burned off! They never left the dead behind, or their weapons. The conditions they fought through were very difficult at best and terrifying at worst. My Sergeant, said the M1 was a superb rifle. He used all of them from the 03, to the M16A2. He liked ALL of them, but the M1 was really special to him. He revered the 1911 as well. Pistols were important as well because of the close distances thing came down too. Guy's sent home for relative's to send handguns to them 38 or 45 cal. I knew one guy that carried a high power in 9mm.
      At least you tried, I'm sure you'd made a good Marine, with your medical training, you'd be invaluable. If you'd like to chat more feel free to fire me an email @ joesabah16@gmail.com you seem like a kindred soul. We'll talk more.

      @@Garandasaurus - Hey, thanks for the kind words. Your sergeant sounds like he was a heck of a man, and a great leader. Those Old Breed Marines are something special. Is it still standard operating procedure for enlisted Marines not to be issued sidearms? Back in the old days, only officers, NCOs and certain others got them. If you weren't in that category, you had to get one on your own. It was the same even in the elite U.S. Army paratroop divisions in WWII, the 82nd A/B and 101st A/B, which is why you had guys in those units writing home to get someone to send them an old revolver or M1911. Regarding being a Corpsman, I have a lot of respect for Army medics, but I like the fact that HMs are not just combat medics, they're fighters, too. I know two different guys who were FMF HMs in Vietnam, and to hear those guys talk, they were as loaded down with weapons and ammo as any Marine when they went out on patrol. Their saying was "In combat, some times the best medicine is fire superiority." When I have had the opportunity to work alongside guys with that training in civilian life, the former HMs always know their stuff. The Navy and the Corps do a great job training them.

    Honestly, Red Dawn was fairly reasonable at its time. A hunting rifle ambush against a small squad could easily work as long as they took out the radioman and officer in the first salvo (and the designated marksman, if they had one). Outranged, not really knowing where their enemy is, and with no way to call for backup, a small squad could easily be wiped out. Given the technology of its day, it was perfectly plausible. What everyone needs to realize, though, is that a lot has changed in the last 36 years. Now, everyone has a handheld radio that can reach out over 10 miles, everyone has a GPS or GLONASS locator, and everyone wears body armor. You can no longer count on being able to cripple the squad's communications before they can call for support. And thanks to GPS or GLONASS, they will know EXACTLY where to send the attack helicopters which will be armed with infrared search equipment. They WILL find you, and they WILL kill you unless you can get underground before they arrive.

    For me…. It’s a great deal more difficult to determine distances in the mountains, like Afghanistan or the Rocky Mountains.
    When hunting, I’ve mostly shot bolt action rifles made in the 1960’s and 70’s but I’ve also used my grandfathers Winchester model 1895 30-40, he was born in 1889 and this was his and later my scabbard rifle. I grew up on a large cattle ranch in the mountains in NM.
    Anyway, maybe someone can speak on this but it seems to me when I’m shooting downhill or uphill on steep angle that I can’t count on the bullet trajectory to act exactly the same as at a lower altitude and shooting on a relatively flat field.
    I think my shooting stories have grown as my mind has aged. But, I have told people that I’ve killed mule deer with the Winchester 30-40 220 grain at ranges between 500-700 yard. This rifle is open site. It literally feels like the bullet is moving slow enough to visibly see it. When it hits a deer you hear a thud and 100% of the time I’ve used it for deer hunting the deer, up to 280 lbs simply fall over dead or take two or three steps and fall over dead. I can’t say the same for the .270.
    Here is what I find very interesting. Understand in the 60’s and 70’s if we needed a deer for meat, we just shot one. Often we shoot them with what ever we had in our work truck. For me, there was always a Remington 722 with a weaver 4x scope. I’ve shot coyotes, bears, mule deer, antelope, jack rabbits, fox, coyote, and pronghorns with the .222 again with no injured and lost animals.
    When I was 16, a girlfriend came to visit our ranch along with her parents. The father love venison and I was trying my best to impress both of them by giving them a tour of the ranch. Anyway we saw several deer running up a gully and then the ran up the trough of a hill. As they neared the top, I whistled several short notes and the deer slowed and stopped. All I had was the .222 in the rear window rack of the 1963 Chevy pickup. I pulled it out and took a shot. Truthfully my girlfriends Dad was like… ain’t goin to happen and I was thinking…. I can do this. So I pulled the trigger. I was aiming mid mass with a guess for wind. I aimed about 25”inches above and to the left of the deer. It hit and the deer ran about 25 feet and fell over. It kicked and moved until we got up to it by driving slowly around trees and cactus. It appeared to be just over 3 tenths of a mile. We had to do a bit of weaving. So I’m guessing about 450-500 yards.
    I think with the 3006 and 270… it’s very reasonable to hit a deer or use most deer rifles as a sniper platform out to 1000 yards.

    I purchased a lightly used Rem783 ( with accu trigger equivalent) ( in 30-06) for a cool $100 off a buddy.
    I installed a Vortex Crossfire2 6-18x scope and a generic bipod.
    My issues were that the stock foreend would touch the barrel when the bipod was loaded, so I made some channels into the stock, buried 2 old carbon arrow shafts down there and sealed it with 2Ton epoxy, then sanded everything down to give the barrel ample clearance. I also filled the buttstock with quick drying silicone and lead 00Buck BBs to help with the recoil.
    It actually worked like a charm and although its not a precision rifle I was amazed that I was able to shoot 350yards with it consistently with trash ammo, and even better with my hand loads. I enjoy tinkering with stuff and I appreciate this video showing that one COULD take a hunting rifle and make it somewhat into a long shooting gun.

    The Tikka T3 seems to be set up straight out of the box. It would be interesting to see you test one. A friend had one in 308 and couldn’t hit a thing with it. I loaded up some 168 Hornady SPBT in new Lapua brass and found it would easily shoot into 1.5” 3-shot groups at 400 yards, and do this repeatably. He was recoil shy. My nephew also purchased one in 270 and with new brass and 130 Hornady SST shot an equal score with self shooting my custom 6.5x55 at 300m and tied for the match. I suspect with some ammo tuning and bedding these rifles could easily top that. Buying factory rifles can be a lottery: most have the potential but it only needs a bad scope or some other factor to create unpredictable results.
    Savage has introduced a few innovations in their recent versions and they’ve always had a good reputation.
    You obviously have the skill to get the best out of a rifle of any sort but many recreational shooters will blame anything but their abilities.

    • @russellnewmexico1

      problem is bullet selection. the barrels of almost all modern (1970+) hunting rifles are capable of quite good accuracy. most bullets produced for 270 rifles don’t take advantage of potential BC, and are usually not produced to exacting standards. that said, i’ve made consistent hits at 900y with good quality factory ammo. there’s good reason LR shooters don’t run to .270. if it had been improved as an LR cartridge from inception, things might have been different.

    When I worked at my LGS we didn't sell the Savage line as well as we did the Remington, Winchester, Browning, Ruger, etc. Customers thought the Compass, Savage and Stoeger shotguns were garbage.
    In the hands of an expert all guns are accurate. Hitchcock45 is able to hit the large gong with a compact 9mm with ease where most people can't hit the X ring at 15 yards. Why? Because he puts in time at the range.
    The basic rifle with a standard 3-9x40 scope has been the go to combo for decades.

    A typical bolt-action hunting rifle is probably one of the most overlooked yet effective weapons out there. It's lightweight, extremely balanced and ergonomic, delivers a punch unlike anything other, and simple to maintain. If you attach a low-power optic to a hunting rifle and rely on your cartridge's point-blank trajectory, you can hit anything from arm distance to approx. 400 yards without adjusting sights or worrying about BDC.
    Combine a hunting rifle with a good sidearm for indoor threats, and you're pretty well armed.

      Good points, CjR, or you can do it the old-school WWI way and zero for 500-yards. Scopes in that time a century ago were primitive by today's standards. Although there were makers of fine glass and lenses, the scopes around them were often fragile and did not have repeatable adjustments. To compensate, precision marksmen often zeroed for a specific distance, such as 500 yards and then learned to hold over or under using the reticle and their knowledge of range and their load's trajectory.

      Sean, they don't call the Winchester M70 "the rifleman's rifle" for nothing. Most Model 70s are exceptionally accurate if you feed them high-quality ammo. If the barrel is still in good shape on your old one, it ought to be live up to historical Winchester Model 70 standards. Suggestion: If it is a 1:10 twist barrel, and it probably is, then try some Hornady 168-grain or 178-grain ELD-Match loads out of it. Makes it into an absolute laser beam.

    Do any rifles ever fail these videos?
    Even if it takes 80 rounds to hit out to 500 they always say “oh it seems capable of these ranges”.
    Honestly anything less than 70/80% of hit percentage is not capable personally.

    Updated scope and trigger will make that thing do miracles figuratively speaking.
    Change it to .308 Win, upgrade trigger, and put on a Primary Arms 4-14 ACSS .223/308 FFP scope. If the ammo is good enough and the trigger isn't terrible, you should be able to drill that steel all the way to 500 yards 90% of the time.
    That DMR recticle does wonders for hunting and 800 yards or less work on .308 Win. It's once you get past that 800 yards is where a dedicated FFP scope in mils that is higly consistent in it's adjustments or the mil tree becomes critical.
    I'm curious if any 9-hole reviews involved a test using that scope, that would be interesting.

    Where I've hunted in PA for years, I'm the designated 'long range' hunter because I can accurately shoot out to, ahem, 200 yards. LOL I am a high volume shooter, reloader since the '70's etc. My home range maxes out at 547 yards. The guys I've hunted with take 1 or 2 or maybe as many as 5 shots at 75 yards 'to confirm zero' before heading out and none after the hunt for a year. They get to sit in stands were a shot is going to be 50 to maybe 75 yards. That's it.
    Before heading west to WY for elk and antelope the norm is numerous range trips in various weather conditions. WY distances and wind are a great equalizer!

      I would propose that the scope is just fine.. (300$ish) the ammo (25$ bx) was found at the local hardware store cuz u forgot your premium stuff, and the rifle (350$)ish, is also good enuf. That's the point of this particular shoot. Run what u brung.

      Hunting guns with cheap ammo will do surprising things. I can consistently shoot sub minute 5rd groups (4 short, damn) with my dad’s 80s vintage 30-06 700 BDL and 3-9 leupold with 155gr browning ammunition.

  • @lawrencemartin1113
    @lawrencemartin1113 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Even my Howa Alpine Mountain rifle in .308 will do that all day long at Bisley Ranges out to 600yds. Not ideal and not comfortable for extended range time but it works perfectly. I am no sniper, just an average shot, but modern hunting rifles, even mass produced factory run guns are pretty reliably accurate out of the box and with solid technique and reasonable glass will get the job done. As for the hypothetical 'combat' use scenario (very odd to and Englishman!), remember; you are no less dead if hit in the right place with an airgun pellet than you are with a field artillery piece.....just enough dead, or as someone once said..."lightly killed!" Love the reviews and the humour, keep up the good work.
