I think they did show that he was struggling regarding the party being disbanded.. You could tell with his hesitation that it was weighing on him and he didn’t want to.

Exactly. Rudy hesitated with passing his guild card over to the receptionist, pausing and gathering his thoughts, before going through with the disbandment.
To be honest, I think all the changes in the anime from the novel were actually good. It feels much more show don't tell. Sure, they could spell out some things(Rudy's first night, Archers, ect), but in the end, a lot of these things except maybe the rarity of archers are things people can easily think and see happening without the show needing to say it explicitly. And for the fight against the grizzlies, I actually liked this version better because the REASON they were forced to fight ended up being the fact that they went back to make sure Rudy didn't just die. They could have just kept running, avoided getting surrounded, and just left him to die. Instead, they went back to make sure he lived.
I agree. I actually like this version better because of that "leave no one behind" spirit they showed.
Ok, so, it looks like the forest at night thing is next so I'm assuming they're gonna skip the scale collection quest. In that quest, Rudeus would have earned their trust when he fell behind protecting their escape which would have caused Sara to head back to protect him. She would have recognized that he would have sacrified himself for them. I dont think you get recognition with this change but theyve got a lot to get through story wise. If they drop the scale collection mission then I think its an 'ok' change to have them come back to help Rudeus with the grizzlies but I think they did him dirty by having him wait for them to start taking damage before he took action. If they fell back, saw Rudeus freeze and then said "we can't leave him", have him be inspired by that and then take out the grizzlies near single handed, I think that would have been better. In the LN, he was only thinking about sacrificing himself (at least, that was my take on it) but the anime makes it look like, in his despair, he was 'ok' sacrificing others too which is a little different.
I agree. Show don't tell is something 99.9% of anime gets so wrong to the point where it's become a trope of the entire medium and when a show gets it right you almost feel like you're not even watching anime anymore. It took me a while to figure out why some anime felt so elevated above the rest and it finally hit me that this is what it was. An example of how to get it wrong is Slime. Don't get me wrong, it's one of my favorite isekai, but last season they literally sat in a circle for 2 entire episodes expo dumping in order to further the plot. If the payoffs weren't so good in that show I probably would have dropped it over its egregious amounts of exposition. I can't tell you how refreshing it is to watch a show that doesn't just rip dozens of paragraphs from the LN wholesale and plop it down in the anime. I feel like the last season of danmachi also did a good job with show don't tell compared to previous seasons.
Like a previous comment said, I think most of your issues come from reading the light novels and wanting it to play out the way you wanted it to.
Rudy's struggles were SHOWN, not told to us. Counter Arrow's capabilities are only known to LN readers. Nobody is really saying anything about them that would make them come off as idiots. We're gonna be spending episodes with this group so many of the issues with them will easily get resolved via showing us.
That's the one issue with such an amazing lightnovel, no matter how good the adaptation it can't reach the level of the novels.
@@lucasvanwijngaarden670it's doing the opposite for me. It makes me like the adaptation more since the inside details are delivered "subtlely" in the anime.
Which feels rewarding as LN novel since you can catch the moment of "yeah, I know what was Rudeus is thinking at that time" etc. Etc.
It's like having read Ultimanias for a final fantasy game.
Okay that pantsu scene, perfect. I was worried Studio Bind would make that scene more comical than emotional, but they managed to convey what we all felt reading that in the novel. Rifujin transformed this item that used to be just a manifestation of Rudeus' perversions into something that symbolizes connection. Brilliant. I never thought I'd go this hard on pantsu, but that just means that Mushoku Tensei is finally back!

As an anime only I’m really enjoying this season so far. Defo gonna read the ln from the beginning tho once this season ends tho that’s months away

I miss the cry when dead end was erased, but that was a build up for the finale of the episode, they got me as well.
The single worst change was the fact that the fact that Rudy is searching for his mum doesn't get announced in the guild. That's supposed to be the focus instead of his name being cheered alongside Counter Arrow.
Also, it appeared as if Counter arrow beat half of the bears themselves while Rudy finished of the other half that were in a distance. Also, the ones they fought seemed more aggressive, so the bears in the distance didn't appear as threatening as they should have. They all even waited for Rudy's dramatic walk and preparation of resolve.
But in the LN Sara runs out of arrows, mages run out of mana etc. while most bears are left (continuously charging) and everyone's sure they're getting wiped out. that's when Rudy steps up and finishes them all off instead of continuing to do 'support magic' he was strictly instructed to do (by Sara)
This episode is good the music is amazing loved it and the ending was the best part of the episode Rudeus remembering his sensei his first love Roxy and her importance in his life and what she had done for him it's amazing❤.
I think the episode was fantastic. The atmosphere was heavy. I am glad they changed the Timothy pissing scene. Since it would have been to comedic for the the whole episode. Until the fighting and pantsu scenes were Rudeus wanted to life, everything seemed gray. And cutting down the explanation how they operate to a minimum, but showing there struggle instead was better.
Symbolics were great as well. For example Rudeus closing the windows at the inn when he arrived because he wanted it dark and gloomy, but after the adventure him opening it up to let light in. Or the whole handshake thing with Rudeus, how je couldn't do it at first (in the LN he did give a handshake) , they added a handshake with Sara and Suzanna as well
Many expected to see this volume being completely skipped, as it wasn't part of the web novel and the main manga adaptation skipped it(doing it now as a stand alone, years later). So everything not skipped in these episodes is technically a plus in that sense lol
Well the anime is an adaptation of the light novel instead of the web novel so of course it would be more accurate to that version.
I'm guessing from next episode's title they might be trying to get through volume 7 in 3 episodes. Which I'm not against as long as they do the ending of the volume justice.
I'd like a slower pace for the entire anime, but we can't have it all.
I liked the fact that the episode had no background music before the fight against the grizzlies. Really drives home the depressing feeling.
One difference I noticed from this episode is that they used more still images for the scenery whereas S1 often had some animation sprinkled in there. It's unfortunate but it's only a minor issue.

I love your breakdown that the anime misses. I enjoyed watching episode 0 pov of mainly slyphie. I understand Rudeus is main character of the show but it would makes more sense if it were from Sara’s POV. Hearing her thoughts of Rudeus would made the show more impactful. As non-reader of the LN, I feel lost and have to rewatch the episode to have some comprehension of the story.

They could show Rudy going in, picking a person, then skip to that person apologizing for being unable to help. But I can easily see them skipping it altogether.
That's not how I interpreted the fight. Counter arrow was retreating and went back to save Rudy from killing himself. They weren't being dumb, they were being heroes

i didnt read the novel so i dont know how good they are supposed to be but when rudys demon eye said they were dead and then they came and won the battle while he did nothing, really showed me that they were all very talented. but i can see beforehand i would have not expected them to do it without his him

I can't really do Light-Novels, but from what I understand, the anime follows the Light-Novel more than the manga-adaptation. If the anime tried to follow the manga, none of this backstory would have even happened.

I felt like Rudy used his large fire ball earlier in the novel though I'm not sure. It felt alittle dissapointing that counter arrow is struggling so hard to fight and he's just standing there. Overall it was a good episode, it hits the keypoints.

I don’t know if it’s just me, but I thought it was gonna take longer for Rudeus to get over his stupor [not completely, though]. But that’s a small nitpick, I really enjoyed this episode a lot. And, yes, the rotating scene was kinda cheesy, but I do like cheese. 😄

Really enjoying these breakdown, feels like getting the full experience without having to read the LN.
I'm pretty sure the memento he has of Eris in the LN is the hair (from when she cut her hair before leaving), like in the anime, not the pantsu. Eris does take his underwear as a memento.
I think it's Eris' hair in the LN as well.
It's her pantsu, I've looked it up before. The thing he throws into the fireplace is described as a small piece of cloth.
I think it's both. The hair was just wrapped in the pants.
I had to temper my expectations after seeing how disappointing the quality was from Episode 0 (if you didnt see anything wrong from it like that part with how Ariel ate that pie then you must be sniffin something and I want that shit) So it was true that episode 0 was not properly directed and was improperly outsourced. glad the director was fired there. and looks like the main episodes here are in good hands here. I wish this was the first episode though to have aired instead of 0 just to give the anime-only's a good impression that the episode production will still retain its quality.
I love how theres no OP yet and that the music actually started coming in when Rudeus started feeling feelings again. it actually showed that it was done on purpose. I love that they have alot of moments here to flex the animations, which further prove that its in good hands. as a Web Novel reader, I am glad this wont disappoint. I hope though anime only's reception wouldn't generalize the entire quality of the show based only on Episode 0 but of course there are people that will be like that and say its bad cause of 1 episode. Personally hate that "3 episode Rule" bullshit because people use that to entirely judge the anime/series.
Wasn't too impressed by the animation this episode tbh, it wasn't bad, but also not amazing. Happy that the bears weren't cgi but wasn't exactly the quality of the snakes of last season. Especially after just watching Zom 100 the animation here felt a bit disappointing.
Also, why did Rudy use fire on the bears? Kinda breaks continuity with the extra episode where Eris gets pissed when goblins are burned to a crisp. How the hell did these bear pelts survive that?
Did prefer the hair over the pantsu. Not just because it's a better representation of Eris, which it is, but also because two pairs would be confusing.
I think at that moment, he just need DPS , man. I don't think Rudy know any other spells that have wide range DPS that fast.

I will say between the two episodes and the LN differences…i think what we are seeing is that the studio is purposely making characters seem somewhat incompetent. Same happened with sylphie in zero.

I have mixed feelings about this episode. I felt like it completely missed Rudy's motivation and intentions. Not to mention, he seemed far less depressed here than in the beginning of V7. For example, the reason why he tried going solo was because he recognized that finding Zenith is highly unlikely so rather than combing through every city, he decided to spread his name with rumours of great feats so Zenith herself would be the one to reach out to him. Of course, when pointed out how dangerous it is, he realized that he'll likely end up dead, which he was fine with. The problem with that approach is that adventurers, as a rule, only care about their immediate surroundings, so someone clearing high level quests won't even get noticed. So he agreed to join Suzanne's party to have live witnesses. There was also a missing monologue about his depression when it came to Eris. He's basically using "finding Zenith" to distract himself from the depression of it all.
On the other hand, it's Mushoku Tensei. Kinda disappointed, but rather have it then none.
