I don't think anyone was really confused about Fitz being Sylphie even in the WN, most people assumed it was her once she did silent casting cause there's no real reason to think otherwise. I'm not sure how you saw Fitz, but since I was initially under the impression it was Slyphie anyway I always thought she was putting on an act and trying her best to be brave in the situation (I think she's only around 9-10 at the time so it makes sense). Her whole "Cold-blooded-killer" persona was mostly because of false rumors spread by Ariel to try and make her side look stronger.
I think it would be the Manga Readers instead who would be confused, as Sylphie in the Manga had a case of temporary amnesia (after her fall from the sky until the assassination attempt).

I was disappointed with the travel scenes being cut as well. Their party was much larger than 3 in the light novel and they lost many to attacks. This was important because it later shows Arials determination to not let those that didn't make it die in vein.

Also in regards to Fitz not acting "properly" during the court scene I just saw it as her first day on the job, so by the time she meets Rudeus she would already be more in "character". As a WN/LN reader myself I agree with you when it comes to the impact of certain scenes and things that get cut but you just kind of get in the groove of taking the anime for what it is (Although the most egregious change for me was the last scene of Ariel going hiking with Luke and Fitz which is kind of dumb), hopefully your future knowledge doesn't soil the series too much for your enjoyment.

I don’t think the anime could ever trick us into believing Silphy isn’t fitz and I don’t think it will change that much. Most readers know Silphy is Fitz pretty quickly, so I think this is a good change.
To be fair about the portrayal of Fitz, a lot of the whole "cold blooded killer" aspect of Fitz was always an overestimation of everyone else based on rumors started by Arials faction. Its a lot easier to make people worried about who this quiet person being a princesses bodyguard is if that person doesnt talk.
not at all, the boar in the novel is literally cut in a half and is described Fitts as more ruthless and cold bloded but a lot of things must be censored or soft for adaptations and be more family friendly

Apparently, episode 0 was mainly animated by a different studio because studio bind don't know what to do with the episode that is why it's mostly different. But animated the rest of the season
And also, anime is very different then the Novel. I honestly think it would be impossible to hide Fitz identity in the anime since you have visual reference for him in every scene he is in... its easier to do it in the books because the author can just retain visuals as much as he wants. If he doesn't mention it, then it doesn't exist. But its hard to do it in a animate series that oyu can see what is happening in the scene. I think its also easier to imagine fits being this super cold and stoic figure since we are reading it and not seeing/listening to it. I still think she was pretty in character when she was in public.
They did my boy Derek Redbat dirty with how little screen time his death and last words were given. Also I don’t know why people hate cgi crowds, it’s a seasonal show not a movie or arthouse. If you want hand drawn crowds go spend 200 bucks on the box dvd sets and send in letters with what you want for season 3. Otherwise stop complaining and let them cook.
Ikr, CGI crowds and cars only have the pass on CGI since it's not feasible to model a new character design just to be in a crowd at the background. Also given that it's not studio bind that made this episode. The episode was made by another studio because at last minute they don't know if they want to include it on this season of MT, that's why it was mark at episode 0 despite being a special episode, an important part of the story and it aired at the aired date of MT season 3 ep 1
Happy Mushoku sunday! I think the anime did a good job picking what to cut for this episode. They really stuck close to Sylphie which is what matters for the moment. F for Derek though, poor man died without even getting to say his piece. You do have a good point about Fitts appearing weaker than in the novels.
What I really like about this Anime is that it has a very unique touch (especially compared to all other isekai Anime) . It is an Anime where with a great storyline, plottwist, likeable characters and of course amazing animations. That's why I watched it, then as an AMV editor I created an AMV and tried to show the audience that didn't now of this Masterpiece how great the Anime is😊and last but not least I read the Manga and I can promise that mushoko Tensei will definitely deliver (acutally I read also the Light novel but I'm not too far from Manga stand away yet). The cold blooded killer was the reputation Ariel wanted the general populace to have. It's literally to deter people from attacking. In a way it's the more humane way. That doesn't mean Sylphie won't step up and kill a mofo to protect Ariel or even herself. I'm mostly sad they didn't have the scene where Ariel tries to basically sexually assault Sylphie and the sylphie shows Ariel she isn't gonna put up with that crap and then Ariel does a 180° in her temperament (and sex life lol)
Like seriously. Go back a re-read all the fitz chapters now knowing for sure it's Sylphie and you'll see her caring and compassionate side shine through the cold blooded persona she's meant to portray.
6:35 as i said in my previous comment, this is Fitz before everything else. Shes still in her training to be Fitz. The girl was the very first assassin she killed. The brother hasnt really been targeting Ariel but now since she is doing more than normal thats why they tried to assassinate her.
Fits was supposed to be cold and quiet. That was Fits in the academy and not before. Sylphie here is still coping up with everything. Heck it may even be just a few months to a year. Since Ariel's entourage were a grade higher than Rudeus. So in terms of timeline, Its gonna be a year for Rudeus in the demon continent while Sylphie is still learning to be Fits. Thats why she is still seen as weak. Even the other guy tells Sylphie to hold on since she looks like she will fall down.
EDIT: Rewatching your video I felt like you didn't pay attention at all on the episode. Little things you complained that they didnt portray on the episode is there... it's just there.... I could make a Long text here that you wouldnt read but... dud, take a second watch... try to pay more attention because 90% of your complains doesnt make sense It's an understandable feeling that not everything from the Novel is portrayed, but this is just unrealistic. Think about how much time would require to put everything you wanted. How many minutes you are willing to sacrifice for this same episode? 3-5? What kind of events would you remove instead? It's not such a simple task when you think on a tight schedule. But if you think about the basic premise of Silphie in Asura Kingdom and why Ariel changed from not wanting anything of this and now wanting to be a king and leaving the country, I think this was portrayed the best way possible in 1 episode. IF there was more time, sure it would be better. And on the topic of animation, I am completely lost. Sure no one enjoys CG background characters but it is industry standard to use to save time, but are you going to tell me it was not worth it for the amazing Silphie Landing + Ariel singing + Silphie battle scenes? 3 sakuga scenes in a single episode showing that Bind is not holding back should reassure.... I don't get what ppl want from them honestly.
I’ve read the whole series once through and have been re reading along with Andrew and I loved this episode. Yes there were changes but nothing that bad and the animation looked totally fine. I think it’s adenine to expect a perfect adaptation because they simply cannot do that or else it would take forever to adapt. Overall the changes they made didn’t ruin anything to me and I loved it. Also the falling scene to me was not a spoiler whoever said that is kinda dumb imo. I’ve watched others reaction and they still didn’t get it so can’t say it was a spoiler
I have two points of disagreement about sylphie being weak. 1) I think the stumbing thing was about her ears being sensitive and her still not use to large crowds. That makes sense, she's a villager B elf. 2) She has a main character "I'm going to protect my friends no matter what" speech, which I think can lead well into her being a stone cold killer later. To me that showed she's gone from protected to protector.
The play being watched by the Prince and his crony? By the subtitles, it seems to be _Macbeth,_ Act 2, Scene 2, with some words changed to reflect the setting. And _Macbeth_ is, very loosely, a play where the protagonist takes the throne he never expected to have after being pushed to do so by a close confidant.
(no spoilers) So I'm a bit of a Mushoku Tensei nerd and I wanted to point out something that was always weird. In the LN and the manga Sylphie had at least some amnesia for a time after arriving at the palace. When she had that bedroom fight against the assassin she somehow managed to regain all of her memories. The weird thing is that it's never made clear what she had forgotten. It's ambiguous enough that I had to wonder if she ever actually lost any memories and simply claimed she did. So no big surprise that the anime completely removed that part.
Theres evidence that Ariel had a conversation with Dereck in the anime wich means that they are going to cover it in the future. Cause they showed you how she didnt care for it and then out nowhere she suddenly wants to become queen. About Fitz, its just describing how Silphy started becoming Fitz. I think you nitpicking. Except for the travel, the fleeing part.
ngl I was a bit bummed out that Derek's story and Ariel's earlier hedonistic endeavours for that matter were cut. I totally understand why they did it but I was still a bit disappointed. Because that was a crucial part of Ariel's character development and another strong part of one of the prevailing theme of Mushoku: people can change for the better, even those who don't believe in change or that it's worthwhile. I really love that short Derek story in the book and it made me really invested in Ariel's character earlier on. Oh well. You can't put everything from novels to anime I guess. It's just it's such an important theme in the series and unfortunately Ariel was a bit sacrificed in that regard in anime.
I mean there wasn't much point in hiding Sylphie since they already showed her at the end of Season 1, and it was practically guaranteed it was her with the silver/white hair and shades since she mentioned Rudeus. Given that, I don't see a point in hiding her identity from then on lol
The 1 thing I wish was shown is Ariel leaving Asura with a bunch of guards and supporters on a coach. Princess Ariel Walking to Ranoa with onlly Luke and Fitz? No way in hell she make that trip allso a lot of her motivation is the people she lost when she was escaping Asura.
Also, dunno the validity of this. But about the concern of the animation and use of cg, I'm reading online something about this specific episode (episode 00) was a late addition. They originally weren't going to go with this as an episode at all. But I guess at the last minute they decided to do it (I'm guessing because s1 ended on a scene of Sylphie and Ariel at the school) Also probably because s1 ends on a scene of Sylphie and Ariel talking while at the school, which, is kinda a jump forward in time because they didn't have that talk till after he gained a reputation as an adventurer in the north central continent. They probably didn't wanna have to do a whole Sylphie chapter in the middle of a rudeus story (think like the Eris goblinslayer episode, tho now, I watch that after the episode when Rudy fights with his dad) Anyways... Long story short, since they waited so long to decide to even make this episode, they outsourced it to another animation studio in Korea if I'm not mistaken, but only that one episode. So starting with episode 1 it'll be business as usual.
As a Web Novel reader. And enjoy all adaptations, manga, LN, side novel etc... this episode made me concerned. Not because of the adaptation of narrative but the quality. It was mishandled. Ive asked around on discord and reddit and they said it was the fault of a stubborn episode director. A perfectionist who didnt manage the outsourcing properly. She was fired afterwards btw.
They go over her charisma and what drives her later in the story again when Rudeus meets her and during flashbacks for elections for student council (which they prob will skip tbh)
I don't think the depictions of Fits in this episode is wrong or something. What we saw here is Sylphy as Sylphy as she's not yet fully grasp the persona of Fits as in the University arc.
I honestly didnt even notice the cgi crowds until you pointed them out, but yeah now that I see them they do look kinda bad. I still think that the animation is pretty good overall. Your commentary made me interested in reading the LN!
Petition to change the name Mushoku Sundays to Sylphie Sundays... jkjk About Fitz being depicted as "cold", personally I got the vibe from reading the novel that that reputation started _after_ she killed the assassin and that only then did they start to go as Silent Fitz The only thing I'm kinda iffy on is that they didn't portray how bad Fitz messed that assassin up, I remember her losing limbs and stuff, which helped kick start that cold blood killer reputation Now, like a mentioned in discord, the whole sub-plot of Fitz being Sylphie and just the journey of figuring it out is literally my favorite part of the story as a whole, so while yeah I'm sad that it isn't here in the anime, I kinda already had figured it wouldn't happen, cuz that whole story beat hinges on the novel not being a visual medium. So yeah, sad about it but expected.
It might be harder to sell the cold blooded killer vibe with fitz in an anime where we can clearly see that she's sylphie as opposed to a book. Perhaps the anime will provide a new perspective when Rudy interacts with Fitz compared to the light novel
I do think I'll continue to read the novels since I'm only a couple ahead of where last season left off and I do wanna get all of the minor details of the story while also watching the anime

I feel like asking it to be too close to the LN is asking for way too much for a single episode. If they added everything discussed here, you'd have the single most rushed episode of Mushoku Tensei and it would have 100% bombed. Changing the Fitz reveal alone would be next to impossible in a visual medium like the manga or the anime. Im not sure how you'd show Fitz killing the multiple assassins, not like a murder montage would have gone over well. They explained what they needed to with Ariel and Pielmon very clearly. The scene with Fitz being assaulted by the noble was from the manga and I think it was done quite well in this episode.
Like how season 1 was focused on "Rudeus" story. This OVA focuses more on "Slyvie". Thus it don't need to keep her identity a mystery. This also makes other character moments on the cutting board that isn't necesarrily contribute much towards Sylphies story. As per tge roots of Ariel's motivations, there are more room to elaborate those in future scenes that focuses about that. And I think they are building the "Fitz" persona here up from the basics. So basically they had slowed down her progression to being Fitz. And the end of episode marks Slyphie's commitment on being the Guardian. And I still can't agree that just by having a cg crowd as a dign of definite "downgrade". They are just about the same as scenes from season 1 where the crowds are basically just human shaped blob of color. Or scenes where even if the only characters on screen are just Rudy, Ruijerd and Eris. They are drawn to a Mob Psycho level of basic details. I don't think of those contrived scenes here and there and say season 1 has Poor Quality. And it makes sense why such scenes have more less work put on it and by comparison not that bad compared to other anime when they have the same dip in quality for a moment
being a director and writer is a pain when adapting to anime because choosing which to cut and adapt and cram it in one episode , next episode would be depressed magician arc which will focus on rudeus
The transition of a weak Sly to OMG Silent Fritz. Was truely developed with their journey out of Asura, telling like this seems realistic in her transition, from who she was to who she will be. Agree about not including the rest of the entourage on the trip is disappointing, could easily show more then 3 people walking out
Broooo I thought I was the only one that noticed the downgrade on the animation which kinda jarred me and the CGI people cuz I was like, ain't no way this quality is on parr as season 1.Right from the start, from the static stars and the odd pan and zoom in it with no music felt weird to me. The outlines of the characters aren't as defined as well as it was back in Season 1. It seemed really rush which resulted to a blurrier image (I normally watch on 720p and usually its enough to be crisp enough but with this episode, I had to bump it up to 1080p and it still looked blurry to me which quite made it jarring to watch. (And omg the CGI Crowd, I was so disappointed because I know that the original staff that worked on Mushoku Tensei would never opt for such a move especially when its not even a huge being but just a crowd?) Idk, I'm still quite worried about the overall quality of this season...
Revealing Fitz's identity is the right call as it was obviously Sylphie and the worst thing would be to treat the audience as dumb. However, I didn't see the need for this episode at all. Ariel is not a primary character and the backstory could have been woven into the School Arc. Darius doesn't enter the scene until after Volume 15 and the story should be focused on Rudy's narrative. At least start the season with your star, Rudeus, as the story is a virtual autobiography of his life with a few side stories thrown in. If you wanted to do a Sylphie backstory do it later like the Roxy backstory in season 1. I will give this episode a pass, though, since it seemed more like an appetizer OVA. I expect a more linear story next episode. As to the animation, the feel is there but there is a downgrade but again it feels like an OVA. I will hold out judgement until I see the real story unfold again. I don't expect season 1 cour 1 quality but cour 2 of this season will require really difficult animation sequences so I can see saving early to emphasize later.
chronological order of event is not your strong point. Fitz first kill was this infamous female assassin(her reputation grown from that). For me personally(as a person who is reading light novel) this episode would be great if Ariel and Luke were presented as they were in novel. Two lazy easygoing people who care more about eating cake and fucking maids than country or anything else. Ariel in books changes way later, when she is put to trial by very important person before that she is mostly going thru the motion.
I never had the vibe fits was a cold killer i mean i think the impression just came from being strong and being able to deal with assasains. But I also don't think see what sylphie does as cold kiling especially by mushoku tensei world standards it wouldn't be viewed as cold to kill assasins that come after your life, or somebody you want to protect. Eris did something pretty similair in the goblin slayer pretty casually. I think if rudy did it then i would see it more as cold killing because rudy standards are a bit different from most of the cast. But i think for others killing to protect isn't really as crazy of a struggle for people that aren't like rudy. Its somethihng that eris, rujierd and kind of do prety casually. And i never saw eris or rujierd as a cold killer either, so knowing the objective of being a bodygaurd I don't know I never saw fitz as a cold killer.
Overall I'm happy with the episode. It is a downgrade, and I of course wish it could be on the level of Season 1, but it is still really good. I'm honestly perfectly okay with them not hiding the fact that its Sylphy. Works well for the anime, and I think overall it'll make this part of the story more enjoyable. The whole is she Sylphy or not thing in the LN detracted a bit from that part of the story in my opinion.
Just watched the episode and it felt strange. With all these anime abusing of double, triple, even quadruple lenghtg first episodes, this was the one that felt it needed more time. I got the impression that huge parts were cut and they left only the bare essential minimum of information.
since its the first time you are watching Mushoku with Light Novel insight you are now going through the phase i myself went through, and i imagine everyone else too, when i read the Light Novels before the anime then proceeded to see how the anime adapted and is finding several flaws and defects on the adaptation. Its normal. When i read the first volumes i too had many complains about season one, and was fucking raging with how poor the anime adapted it all, while most anime onlies, blessed by ignorance, obviously didn't noticed the problems. Thats the price of being a Light Novel reader. But eventually i got used it and understood that a good adaptation is nigh impossible in this industry. Im now at a point that i am simply glad that they dedicated a whole episode to tell what happened to syplphy. I thought they would skip the shit out of it. Hell i already accepted that they are gonna skip all Sword Sanctum scenes...
It was a good episode for anime Only watcher. Still good but they left out a lot or just glossed over it. in my option they could have skipped it and made it in a movie like Eris goblin slaying adventure. knowing what was left out it could have been so much better.
"Youre never gonna get a perfect adaptation". Lord of the rings got a perfect adaptation, season 1 was a perfect adaptation, if the rest disappoints I will never forget the people who stopped watching this show because of the "controversy"

Also, we don’t even know how they are going to utilize these small changes in story detail yet so I don’t think we should be so quick to lose faith in Studio Bind’s love and care for the production of this show. Spoilers if you haven't read the LN at least through the labyrinth section: I was shocked when I saw from the trailers they are getting at least as far as the labyrinth this season and Roxy "comforting" him afterwards. I don't remember how many volumes that was, and I don't know how many episodes season 2 is slated for, but that seems like they must be planning on cutting a decent amount of content if they are going to make it that far. They have to get all the way through the school arc, Rudy dealing with his ED, reuniting with Sylphie, getting married and having a kid on the way. Then there's all the character interactions to set up future arcs like the beast girls, the demon king, Cliff, all the stuff with Nanohoshi, his sisters and Ruijard, catching up with Eris, buying a house and fighting the doll thing. I remember feeling like the whole school / ED thing really dragged on, but it seems to me like they're really going to have to speed run it to get as far as they want this season.

@@azumag4432 I don't think the fact that assassins use poison was that important going forward, it's sort of a matter of fact thing. The assassins in the Eris OVA also used poison. What was important however is that Fitts noticed she got poisoned and used silent detoxification magic on herself instead of needing a doctor after the fact. That's important not because it is foreshadowing mind you. But because it significantly changes how Fitts' character is portrayed, from the mysterious and extremely skilled guardian mage, to "just" a skilled mage from unknown origin.

You got me into watching this series Andrew. I only just started watching season 1 really enjoying it, looking forward to getting to season 2

If he doesn't mention it, then it doesn't exist. But its hard to do it in a animate series that oyu can see what is happening in the scene. I think its also easier to imagine fits being this super cold and stoic figure since we are reading it and not seeing/listening to it. I still think she was pretty in character when she was in public.
Fitz identity was already blown in the last few seconds of Season 1 after the credits so there's not much point in attempting to hide it now.
They did my boy Derek Redbat dirty with how little screen time his death and last words were given.
Also I don’t know why people hate cgi crowds, it’s a seasonal show not a movie or arthouse. If you want hand drawn crowds go spend 200 bucks on the box dvd sets and send in letters with what you want for season 3. Otherwise stop complaining and let them cook.

Ikr, CGI crowds and cars only have the pass on CGI since it's not feasible to model a new character design just to be in a crowd at the background. Also given that it's not studio bind that made this episode. The episode was made by another studio because at last minute they don't know if they want to include it on this season of MT, that's why it was mark at episode 0 despite being a special episode, an important part of the story and it aired at the aired date of MT season 3 ep 1

I think the anime did a good job picking what to cut for this episode. They really stuck close to Sylphie which is what matters for the moment.
F for Derek though, poor man died without even getting to say his piece.
You do have a good point about Fitts appearing weaker than in the novels.
What I really like about this Anime is that it has a very unique touch (especially compared to all other isekai Anime) . It is an Anime where with a great storyline, plottwist, likeable characters and of course amazing animations. That's why I watched it, then as an AMV editor I created an AMV and tried to show the audience that didn't now of this Masterpiece how great the Anime is😊and last but not least I read the Manga and I can promise that mushoko Tensei will definitely deliver (acutally I read also the Light novel but I'm not too far from Manga stand away yet).

The cold blooded killer was the reputation Ariel wanted the general populace to have. It's literally to deter people from attacking. In a way it's the more humane way. That doesn't mean Sylphie won't step up and kill a mofo to protect Ariel or even herself.
I'm mostly sad they didn't have the scene where Ariel tries to basically sexually assault Sylphie and the sylphie shows Ariel she isn't gonna put up with that crap and then Ariel does a 180° in her temperament (and sex life lol)
Like seriously. Go back a re-read all the fitz chapters now knowing for sure it's Sylphie and you'll see her caring and compassionate side shine through the cold blooded persona she's meant to portray.
6:35 as i said in my previous comment, this is Fitz before everything else. Shes still in her training to be Fitz. The girl was the very first assassin she killed. The brother hasnt really been targeting Ariel but now since she is doing more than normal thats why they tried to assassinate her.
25 min episode they can't cram every detail in a single episode and they are not going to dedicate two episode on her
Fits was supposed to be cold and quiet. That was Fits in the academy and not before.
Sylphie here is still coping up with everything. Heck it may even be just a few months to a year. Since Ariel's entourage were a grade higher than Rudeus. So in terms of timeline, Its gonna be a year for Rudeus in the demon continent while Sylphie is still learning to be Fits. Thats why she is still seen as weak. Even the other guy tells Sylphie to hold on since she looks like she will fall down.
I thought the episode was amazing and that they did a perfect job doing Fitz story in 23 minutes.
EDIT: Rewatching your video I felt like you didn't pay attention at all on the episode. Little things you complained that they didnt portray on the episode is there... it's just there.... I could make a Long text here that you wouldnt read but... dud, take a second watch... try to pay more attention because 90% of your complains doesnt make sense
It's an understandable feeling that not everything from the Novel is portrayed, but this is just unrealistic. Think about how much time would require to put everything you wanted. How many minutes you are willing to sacrifice for this same episode? 3-5? What kind of events would you remove instead? It's not such a simple task when you think on a tight schedule.
But if you think about the basic premise of Silphie in Asura Kingdom and why Ariel changed from not wanting anything of this and now wanting to be a king and leaving the country, I think this was portrayed the best way possible in 1 episode. IF there was more time, sure it would be better.
And on the topic of animation, I am completely lost. Sure no one enjoys CG background characters but it is industry standard to use to save time, but are you going to tell me it was not worth it for the amazing Silphie Landing + Ariel singing + Silphie battle scenes? 3 sakuga scenes in a single episode showing that Bind is not holding back should reassure.... I don't get what ppl want from them honestly.

I’ve read the whole series once through and have been re reading along with Andrew and I loved this episode. Yes there were changes but nothing that bad and the animation looked totally fine. I think it’s adenine to expect a perfect adaptation because they simply cannot do that or else it would take forever to adapt. Overall the changes they made didn’t ruin anything to me and I loved it. Also the falling scene to me was not a spoiler whoever said that is kinda dumb imo. I’ve watched others reaction and they still didn’t get it so can’t say it was a spoiler

I have two points of disagreement about sylphie being weak.
1) I think the stumbing thing was about her ears being sensitive and her still not use to large crowds. That makes sense, she's a villager B elf.
2) She has a main character "I'm going to protect my friends no matter what" speech, which I think can lead well into her being a stone cold killer later. To me that showed she's gone from protected to protector.
The play being watched by the Prince and his crony? By the subtitles, it seems to be _Macbeth,_ Act 2, Scene 2, with some words changed to reflect the setting.
And _Macbeth_ is, very loosely, a play where the protagonist takes the throne he never expected to have after being pushed to do so by a close confidant.

(no spoilers) So I'm a bit of a Mushoku Tensei nerd and I wanted to point out something that was always weird. In the LN and the manga Sylphie had at least some amnesia for a time after arriving at the palace. When she had that bedroom fight against the assassin she somehow managed to regain all of her memories. The weird thing is that it's never made clear what she had forgotten. It's ambiguous enough that I had to wonder if she ever actually lost any memories and simply claimed she did. So no big surprise that the anime completely removed that part.
I'm already pretty used to the anime simplifying a fuckton of stuff. I just hope the core of the series is intact.
Theres evidence that Ariel had a conversation with Dereck in the anime wich means that they are going to cover it in the future. Cause they showed you how she didnt care for it and then out nowhere she suddenly wants to become queen. About Fitz, its just describing how Silphy started becoming Fitz. I think you nitpicking. Except for the travel, the fleeing part.
ngl I was a bit bummed out that Derek's story and Ariel's earlier hedonistic endeavours for that matter were cut. I totally understand why they did it but I was still a bit disappointed. Because that was a crucial part of Ariel's character development and another strong part of one of the prevailing theme of Mushoku: people can change for the better, even those who don't believe in change or that it's worthwhile. I really love that short Derek story in the book and it made me really invested in Ariel's character earlier on. Oh well. You can't put everything from novels to anime I guess. It's just it's such an important theme in the series and unfortunately Ariel was a bit sacrificed in that regard in anime.
I mean there wasn't much point in hiding Sylphie since they already showed her at the end of Season 1, and it was practically guaranteed it was her with the silver/white hair and shades since she mentioned Rudeus. Given that, I don't see a point in hiding her identity from then on lol
This is why I watch the anime first then read fhe light novels later. Cos people tend to be too critical on stuff that's missed out.
The 1 thing I wish was shown is Ariel leaving Asura with a bunch of guards and supporters on a coach.

Also, dunno the validity of this. But about the concern of the animation and use of cg, I'm reading online something about this specific episode (episode 00) was a late addition. They originally weren't going to go with this as an episode at all. But I guess at the last minute they decided to do it (I'm guessing because s1 ended on a scene of Sylphie and Ariel at the school)
Also probably because s1 ends on a scene of Sylphie and Ariel talking while at the school, which, is kinda a jump forward in time because they didn't have that talk till after he gained a reputation as an adventurer in the north central continent. They probably didn't wanna have to do a whole Sylphie chapter in the middle of a rudeus story (think like the Eris goblinslayer episode, tho now, I watch that after the episode when Rudy fights with his dad)
Anyways... Long story short, since they waited so long to decide to even make this episode, they outsourced it to another animation studio in Korea if I'm not mistaken, but only that one episode. So starting with episode 1 it'll be business as usual.
It is weird that they did not show her detoxifying herself since healing magic is the most powerful type in the series.
As a Web Novel reader. And enjoy all adaptations, manga, LN, side novel etc... this episode made me concerned. Not because of the adaptation of narrative but the quality. It was mishandled. Ive asked around on discord and reddit and they said it was the fault of a stubborn episode director. A perfectionist who didnt manage the outsourcing properly. She was fired afterwards btw.
They go over her charisma and what drives her later in the story again when Rudeus meets her and during flashbacks for elections for student council (which they prob will skip tbh)
Feels like we coulda had like 3-5 episodes of just this part of the story. I do wish they didn't cut so much. :P
I don't think the depictions of Fits in this episode is wrong or something. What we saw here is Sylphy as Sylphy as she's not yet fully grasp the persona of Fits as in the University arc.
I honestly didnt even notice the cgi crowds until you pointed them out, but yeah now that I see them they do look kinda bad. I still think that the animation is pretty good overall. Your commentary made me interested in reading the LN!

About Fitz being depicted as "cold", personally I got the vibe from reading the novel that that reputation started _after_ she killed the assassin and that only then did they start to go as Silent Fitz
The only thing I'm kinda iffy on is that they didn't portray how bad Fitz messed that assassin up, I remember her losing limbs and stuff, which helped kick start that cold blood killer reputation
Now, like a mentioned in discord, the whole sub-plot of Fitz being Sylphie and just the journey of figuring it out is literally my favorite part of the story as a whole, so while yeah I'm sad that it isn't here in the anime, I kinda already had figured it wouldn't happen, cuz that whole story beat hinges on the novel not being a visual medium. So yeah, sad about it but expected.
It might be harder to sell the cold blooded killer vibe with fitz in an anime where we can clearly see that she's sylphie as opposed to a book.
Perhaps the anime will provide a new perspective when Rudy interacts with Fitz compared to the light novel
I do think I'll continue to read the novels since I'm only a couple ahead of where last season left off and I do wanna get all of the minor details of the story while also watching the anime

It’s pretty obvious Sylphy been with Arial for a while. They completely skipped the Fitz scene from season one when Eris’s grandfather executed.

I feel like asking it to be too close to the LN is asking for way too much for a single episode. If they added everything discussed here, you'd have the single most rushed episode of Mushoku Tensei and it would have 100% bombed. Changing the Fitz reveal alone would be next to impossible in a visual medium like the manga or the anime. Im not sure how you'd show Fitz killing the multiple assassins, not like a murder montage would have gone over well. They explained what they needed to with Ariel and Pielmon very clearly. The scene with Fitz being assaulted by the noble was from the manga and I think it was done quite well in this episode.
Like how season 1 was focused on "Rudeus" story. This OVA focuses more on "Slyvie". Thus it don't need to keep her identity a mystery. This also makes other character moments on the cutting board that isn't necesarrily contribute much towards Sylphies story.
As per tge roots of Ariel's motivations, there are more room to elaborate those in future scenes that focuses about that.
And I think they are building the "Fitz" persona here up from the basics. So basically they had slowed down her progression to being Fitz. And the end of episode marks Slyphie's commitment on being the Guardian.
And I still can't agree that just by having a cg crowd as a dign of definite "downgrade".
They are just about the same as scenes from season 1 where the crowds are basically just human shaped blob of color. Or scenes where even if the only characters on screen are just Rudy, Ruijerd and Eris. They are drawn to a Mob Psycho level of basic details.
I don't think of those contrived scenes here and there and say season 1 has Poor Quality. And it makes sense why such scenes have more less work put on it and by comparison not that bad compared to other anime when they have the same dip in quality for a moment
being a director and writer is a pain when adapting to anime because choosing which to cut and adapt and cram it in one episode , next episode would be depressed magician arc which will focus on rudeus

The transition of a weak Sly to OMG Silent Fritz. Was truely developed with their journey out of Asura, telling like this seems realistic in her transition, from who she was to who she will be. Agree about not including the rest of the entourage on the trip is disappointing, could easily show more then 3 people walking out

Broooo I thought I was the only one that noticed the downgrade on the animation which kinda jarred me and the CGI people cuz I was like, ain't no way this quality is on parr as season 1.Right from the start, from the static stars and the odd pan and zoom in it with no music felt weird to me. The outlines of the characters aren't as defined as well as it was back in Season 1. It seemed really rush which resulted to a blurrier image (I normally watch on 720p and usually its enough to be crisp enough but with this episode, I had to bump it up to 1080p and it still looked blurry to me which quite made it jarring to watch. (And omg the CGI Crowd, I was so disappointed because I know that the original staff that worked on Mushoku Tensei would never opt for such a move especially when its not even a huge being but just a crowd?)
Idk, I'm still quite worried about the overall quality of this season...
Revealing Fitz's identity is the right call as it was obviously Sylphie and the worst thing would be to treat the audience as dumb. However, I didn't see the need for this episode at all. Ariel is not a primary character and the backstory could have been woven into the School Arc. Darius doesn't enter the scene until after Volume 15 and the story should be focused on Rudy's narrative. At least start the season with your star, Rudeus, as the story is a virtual autobiography of his life with a few side stories thrown in. If you wanted to do a Sylphie backstory do it later like the Roxy backstory in season 1. I will give this episode a pass, though, since it seemed more like an appetizer OVA. I expect a more linear story next episode. As to the animation, the feel is there but there is a downgrade but again it feels like an OVA. I will hold out judgement until I see the real story unfold again. I don't expect season 1 cour 1 quality but cour 2 of this season will require really difficult animation sequences so I can see saving early to emphasize later.
chronological order of event is not your strong point. Fitz first kill was this infamous female assassin(her reputation grown from that).
For me personally(as a person who is reading light novel) this episode would be great if Ariel and Luke were presented as they were in novel. Two lazy easygoing people who care more about eating cake and fucking maids than country or anything else. Ariel in books changes way later, when she is put to trial by very important person before that she is mostly going thru the motion.
I never had the vibe fits was a cold killer i mean i think the impression just came from being strong and being able to deal with assasains. But I also don't think see what sylphie does as cold kiling especially by mushoku tensei world standards it wouldn't be viewed as cold to kill assasins that come after your life, or somebody you want to protect. Eris did something pretty similair in the goblin slayer pretty casually. I think if rudy did it then i would see it more as cold killing because rudy standards are a bit different from most of the cast.
But i think for others killing to protect isn't really as crazy of a struggle for people that aren't like rudy. Its somethihng that eris, rujierd and kind of do prety casually. And i never saw eris or rujierd as a cold killer either, so knowing the objective of being a bodygaurd I don't know I never saw fitz as a cold killer.

Overall I'm happy with the episode. It is a downgrade, and I of course wish it could be on the level of Season 1, but it is still really good.
I'm honestly perfectly okay with them not hiding the fact that its Sylphy. Works well for the anime, and I think overall it'll make this part of the story more enjoyable. The whole is she Sylphy or not thing in the LN detracted a bit from that part of the story in my opinion.

Just watched the episode and it felt strange.
With all these anime abusing of double, triple, even quadruple lenghtg first episodes, this was the one that felt it needed more time. I got the impression that huge parts were cut and they left only the bare essential minimum of information.
since its the first time you are watching Mushoku with Light Novel insight you are now going through the phase i myself went through, and i imagine everyone else too, when i read the Light Novels before the anime then proceeded to see how the anime adapted and is finding several flaws and defects on the adaptation. Its normal. When i read the first volumes i too had many complains about season one, and was fucking raging with how poor the anime adapted it all, while most anime onlies, blessed by ignorance, obviously didn't noticed the problems. Thats the price of being a Light Novel reader. But eventually i got used it and understood that a good adaptation is nigh impossible in this industry. Im now at a point that i am simply glad that they dedicated a whole episode to tell what happened to syplphy. I thought they would skip the shit out of it. Hell i already accepted that they are gonna skip all Sword Sanctum scenes...
It was a good episode for anime Only watcher. Still good but they left out a lot or just glossed over it. in my option they could have skipped it and made it in a movie like Eris goblin slaying adventure. knowing what was left out it could have been so much better.

As a novel reader, I thought this episode was really good and the quality is still incredibly high across the board. We were definitely spoiled with S1 and it’s starting to show….

I was shocked when I saw from the trailers they are getting at least as far as the labyrinth this season and Roxy "comforting" him afterwards. I don't remember how many volumes that was, and I don't know how many episodes season 2 is slated for, but that seems like they must be planning on cutting a decent amount of content if they are going to make it that far. They have to get all the way through the school arc, Rudy dealing with his ED, reuniting with Sylphie, getting married and having a kid on the way. Then there's all the character interactions to set up future arcs like the beast girls, the demon king, Cliff, all the stuff with Nanohoshi, his sisters and Ruijard, catching up with Eris, buying a house and fighting the doll thing. I remember feeling like the whole school / ED thing really dragged on, but it seems to me like they're really going to have to speed run it to get as far as they want this season.

@@azumag4432 I don't think the fact that assassins use poison was that important going forward, it's sort of a matter of fact thing. The assassins in the Eris OVA also used poison.
What was important however is that Fitts noticed she got poisoned and used silent detoxification magic on herself instead of needing a doctor after the fact.
That's important not because it is foreshadowing mind you. But because it significantly changes how Fitts' character is portrayed, from the mysterious and extremely skilled guardian mage, to "just" a skilled mage from unknown origin.
