They expect every isekai character to free all the slaves in an episode. Read some history it takes so much work to end slavery and human trafficking. Unless the MC is some kind of all powerful god it ain't gonna be easy.
We STILL have a massive issue with human trafficking and some parts of the world still use slaves. I'm not sure why people get on their high horse and spew stupid shit when they themselves know fuck all.

Rudy would get bodied pretty quickly if he tried to overthrow society or something. He's strong, but even at his most powerful in his entire life, there are many people who would absolutely destroy him. Almost any sage level swordsman could kill him easily if they caught him off guard and attacked from behind where he wouldn't see it with the eye of foresight.

Rudy’s stance on slavery is He is against it. Does he actively work to dismantle the trade? Yes, indirectly. If he witnesses a kidnapping in progress will he let it happen? Absolutely not, he fought is father’s group because he thought is was a kidnapping. Would he attack a slave market? No, because Eris tried that before and it nearly got them into a ton of trouble with the actual Law. When given the opportunity to free captives of kidnappers or preventing abductions, he will act. Because he almost always has.
I went back and checked every volume 1-8 to (currently adapted) to make sure I didn't miss any internal conflict or choice. His stance with situations like Millis (paul's group) was simply that he can't justify turning a blind eye. A lot of his encouragement is from the sake of being Dead End. Not letting Ruijerd down and his desire to save children.
@@otakuspirit Yes, every instance in which Rudy has acted he had an internal justification or a personal investment. Eris’ attempted kidnapping due to his botched plan. The Doldia children was through arrangement but again stepped in during the attack on the village to gain their favor and remain true to Ruijerd. The confrontation with Paul’s group, yes the first rule of Dead End is Never Abandon a Child in Peril and he needed to reinforce the image of Dead End. Also, Lilia and Aisha were his family so their rescue was paramount.
I believe Rudy is kind of person who must justify his actions to himself as risk assessment. Consider the times he had no personal stake to act: defending Sylphie from bullies, being Eris’ dance partner (her etiquette education was not his responsibility), rescuing Sara, willing to step in if Zanoba was being mistreated, and more moments to come. It goes back to what Paul taught him “Strength is for protecting the weak.” As you accurately pointed out, in this scenario at the slave market, he would likely put them into more peril having no real way to care for them along with the dangerous prospect of becoming a target/enemy of the Slave Trade itself.
Yh the problem is that many ppl argue in presentism.
Even Luffy from one piece got in a lot of trouble for trying to bust a slave auction.

Funny. I recall Qui-Gon Jinn and Obi-Wan Kenobi doing something similar. Slavery is very present in Star Wars and the Jedi don't actively try to topple institutions or governments that engage in it. And yet it gets a pass while Mushoku Tensei doesn't?
Please never stop, I love your Mushoku Tensei videos. They have plenty of substance and I like your input on skipped content and expansion on the series as a whole.
People really don't get that institutional injustices can only be solved with institutional changes. Julie didn't get kidnaped, she ended in slavery becouse her parents were in crippling debt and the entire family was taken to pay for it. It was through legal means. That doesn't mean is ok, it means that Rudeus attacking the slave market would be seen as an ilegal act, he would be the criminal here, not the slavers. Again, only institutional changes can get rid of institutional injustice and Rudeus doesn't have the power to do that.
This is true (sad, but true). It's similar to with the beastfolk in Zant. He asked them how they got there, and it was when they mentioned they were snatched by a stranger that he realized he wasn't breaking the law by freeing them. Not that I think he'd abandon them if they were sold/sold themselves, but I think it would make him fearful of not just being hunted by smugglers, but the law.
As an anime only person your videos help me understand the deeper things going on this anime which I never would realise myself.
Thanks for continuing this discussion. I agree that just cause a character in a story partakes in slavery doesn't automatically make that work pro-slavery, but it does tend to color said character and that's good when you are looking to have flawed characters in your story (especially for the "dark fantasy" genre) so that there is a bigger opportunity for character growth. More importantly, I believe that having slavery in a work can serve to remind people that slavery of many forms is still an issue in IRL so I wouldn't want to discourage authors from including the trope in their work, just to implement it the best they can to show the disgust of the practice.
That said, it's important to note that I've seen people complain that if they don't find any of the protagonist characters relatable, they don't want to watch the anime--I think they're missing out on a lot of great writing if that's true, but I think many of them are either trolling or not being honest with themselves.
I couldnt imagine a world with stories all kept in a bottle and unable to touch on tough subjects. Reading the novel series and getting deeper mental conflicts that are really thought provoking shows me that this writer isn't just messing around with topics. He wants to explore it. And I eat up every minute of it.

One minor correction. Although Zanoba did provide the funds, Rudeus is technically the one who owns Julie. This is explicitly confirmed in one of the later volumes of the LN.

I don't understand this take on things. Maybe it's because in the anime he had accepted slavery and didn't say "slavery is bad" in his internal monologue. We can assume it's just because it's been a part of this world for his entire life and it would be mostly likely that he doesn't like it but can't do anything about it. They weren't this salty about Naofumi doing nothing about slavery in Shield Hero.
It's one of those things that does make me wonder. Would people act differently if Rudeus said "Ugh, I hate this" in his mind? I doubt it. People would still say "he did nothing, so he's part of the problem".

@@otakuspirit Personally, I was kind of weirded out by Rudeus not having any internal monologue about how weird or gross this was. He's explicitly done so in the past, why not now? I didn't expect him to revolutionize against slavery or anything, though I do feel most people who are complaining would.
I also felt real gross in shield hero, but it was season 2 where it was actively justified (in the dub) that really hit me. I hadn't known, but the sub in season 1 kind of justifies it there too, and so that was too far for me.
Rudeus didn't exactly do that? And I know he's actively fought against it in the past, but that's why there's some conflict in me about why this time was different. Making jokes in the middle of buying a slave wasn't great of the show either, but there was also appropriate weight when actually meeting julie, and from the beginning Rudeus was very pro her own agency, which is nice.
I don't know, I don't think this is something to write off the show as justifying slavery as some people seem like they want to do, but I also feel like there's definitely some conflicting messaging in there too. There's definitely a discussion to be had over weather the episode handled things well or not, and how this reflects on rudeus at this stage of his life. People just need to be more mature about having those discussions I think.
I'm very curious, what exactly was Rudeus supposed to do? In this world, slavery is normal and generally accepted, and he can’t influence it in any way. On our Earth it took a whole industrial revolution around the world to end slavery, and anti-slavery laws in place for decades, and even so, there are still a few percent of the human population as slaves.
ignorant people will be greatly surprised how difficult it is for one or a few people to break the established system that has existed for centuries around the world. even if these people are isekai protagonists sent by the gods
This is literally the development that people want to see but people who watched trash isekai may be tired of:
1. Bumps into a runaway loli.
2. Finds out loli is a slave.
3. Loli gets caught.
4. MC gets angery.
5. Decimates slave trade.
6. Get free loli.
It may be fun to see the mc decimate stuff but this isnt grounded or dramatic.

One person is incredibly limited and expecting somebody else to lead an entire revolution/war just so you the bystander can feel better....is just delusional.
I would expect Rudy to do this as he is realistic when he is on his own.

Yeah, and sure, while he _could_ probably break them out- what would that do? He’s obviously breaking the law, he would get kicked out of school, the slaves themselves would probably have nowhere to go and get captured by someone and society would most likely turn against him. The best he can do is to treat Julie well or earn enough money to buy them all and raise them well enough to give them a future… the latter of which simply isn’t happening though!
People dont expect Rudeus to stop slavery in the episode.
They expect Rudeus to be against the idea of buying and owning slaves.

If you own someone, the relationship is not consentual.
You rob them of their freedom by definition.
The right thing to do would have been to not buy a slave to satisfy a nobles hobby who is known to accidentally break the necks of children.
But if he had to buy one, he should have felt disgusted by the act and/or offered her freedom right after buying her and then asking for her consent if she wanted to stay with them and help them.
If she ever wanted to leave, she should have to be able to.
Otherwise you own a slave, take a persons freedom and their fundamental rights.

i think the difference is that they made it clear the slaves volunteered to become slaves, whether because of unfortunate circumstances or not. really emphasizes the recurring theme in this show about how Rudy, who gave up on life at his lowest point (and of course second chances). and that typically, the people volunteering to become slaves are similar to Rudy in the sense that they have also given up on living. It's sad to see that the children can be sold by their parents, but in our society parents can abandon their children, send them to poor foster homes where they can be abused, or even be abused at home, it's really just further highlights how gross parental control can be in any society. that's my take on it anyways, it seemed overly clear that these slaves weren't forced, like the ones kidnapped previously and that is the norm there
It is interesting that in the later stages of the novel, the Pax Prince, whom many readers dislike, is actually the person who proposed and attempted to abolish slavery. He became the king of the Shirone Kingdom, but he only proposed to improve the treatment of slaves, which met with great resistance. His son, who inherited his will, spent most of his life only improving the situation a little. This can also prove how naive and impossible it was for Rudy to save all the slaves in this situation at this time.
I don't believe Rudeus is ok with slavery, but the society he lives in is, it's like if you were transported to the past, there's little you can do to change things, and what little you can do will take your entire life and will not see the changes you push for.

People forget that "forced servitude" has been a "thing" with mankind for far longer than it hasn't. Every nation, every people, had slaves throughout history. Thankfully we've matured socially enough to end slavery, mostly. Slavery still exists. Open slave markets in Libya. Sex trafficking-slavery exists and can be found even in the most "advanced" countries.
A story set in a fictional world with a medieval background that didn't have slaves would be remarkable because it doesn't follow what for us is historical precedent.
news flash : human exploitation / modern slavery (still) exists IRL, but many people would like to fantasize it doesn't and nothing they do in their little lives would contribute to others misery; but the actual world doesn't run on wishful thinking.

I believe if she stated quiet, rudy would have walked away and i also believe if she choose death, rudy would probably had mercy killed her. To me it was complex, it was more then just buying her. I won't go into spoiler territory, but the assumption of all slave traders are the same is wrong. There are slave self-sold, or criminal slaves who are eager to pay their debt, and slavers who want to train good and happy servers.
Each markets has specialties and traits. But slavery is a trade of unequal power dynamics, so it is very easy for someone to abuse others. This is real in the real world, and if Mushoku Tensei put a lot of its effort into worldbuilding, I believe it has its own take on this. It's not controversial if the story is leading to somewhere important and people believes in it, imo.

On a side note if you want to see the detriments of slavery accurately portrayed in an anime you should watch Vinland saga (second season specifically). It shows just how deeply ingrained into the world as a whole slavery is and how there were even some good natured ppl who sought to free them in their own way.

14:00 There is also the problem of what to do with all the newly freed slaves he would now be responsible for. He'd have to get them somewhere safe, clothe them, feed them, make sure they are healthy and all of that for however long it took to get them actual paid jobs. None of which he has the resources for, even if attempting it wouldn't result in him getting into a ton of trouble with the law.

Yeah my only “issue” Is that rudeus DOES interact with the slave market. That’s a point you can use against him here every single time. Maybe it's because I'm from a more Eastern Asian country, and we understand things in fiction are just fiction, especially Isekai story will have a different world-building that is different than our world and bound to have certain traits that are closer to awful stuff we human have in human history.
I just feel like the stuff in this video is common sense and easily understood what the author wants to tell you if you actually were watching the anime and understand the settings of the Muchoku Tensei world.

The last few seasons were butchered, but people can really learn a lot about Game of Thrones. There we had Daenerys, the very embodiment of the hero archetype. She saw slavery and almost immediately set out to invade cities in order to free slaves and abolish slavery. Spoiler alert, it ended up bringing more harm than good. That's because she did it by force, she's a foreigner, and she did it almost overnight. She just went to cities, trampled them, and was like nope, you can't do what's been part of your culture for centuries now, just because I said so. In the end, as soon as she left those cities, slavery went back and it became even worse that those cities' economies have been wrecked. The reality is that for something like slavery that's been going on for centuries, years and years of education and social reforms are needed. I'm very happy that Rudy didn't go the Daenerys route and just blew up the slave market and started the revolution to abolish slavery in their world. That's just not very realistic. Will the anime and the Rudy himself gain more fans if that happened? Maybe? But I don't think that's the kind of story that I'd gravitate towards.

Well done, Andrew. Good break down on the subject. I don't know what some who are complaining wanted them to do. Free her after they purchased her? She's a 6 year old malnourished girl who would have died on the streets if they hadn't done what they did.
I think a better argument is why Zanoba doesn't free her and then hire her as a maid, but maybe there's laws against that. But she's being treated as a family memeber either way. It's funny that it doesn't make me hate the story, but more love it because it can bring up so many possibilities for a resolve because it's so complex and well thought out. Not just done for the sake of doing it.

It's a similiar argument im Sugar Apple Fairy Tale! It exists in these worlds and the main characters definetly don't condone/are definetly not fans of the practice but they also can't really start a revolution on their own as well. They aren't OP protagonists.
The difference between Rudy and every other isekai main character is he’s a pervert and not just a pervert but a massive one even by anime standards. I avoided this series for a bit because I believed the haters but I checked it out and while yes there are moments watching it I feel gross those aren’t really bad enough for it to ruin everything this series is great at making you feel every emotion very strongly both the good and the bad.
People should read more about our history, try to understand how our society used to function, how nobility doing things differently so that they can feel the differences between them and normal people. Then i think we can tell that things that happened in this series actually weren’t that weird.
I agree if don't like it don't watch it but there's nothing in MT that can't be found in GoT and that won emmy's. The outrage is just another example of western double standards. As some one who's family has Freedman ancestry amongst others I have np with how forced servitude is being depicted. The irony of not knowing that Rudy has done nothing the Prophet didn't do is amazing to me. Not to mention the countless tribal cultures and countries that to this day that still practice forced servitude over a million in Africa alone. People should read about "Malik Ambar slave king of India" and how he explains why he did what he did. In societies or worlds where this is legal there is no just letting them go. We would be rounded up and enslaved again or worse Thomas Sowell has several in depth videos about this as does several Arab and African scholars. There are actual examples of this happening thru out real world history. Which is why many freed slaves including those that made up whole arms stayed with there "Lords" or "masters". The mob boss analogy while I understand your point. It doesn't give the proper scope to what's really going on. Whole countries, tribes, and religions support forced servitude in MT just like the real world. Attacking a market will bring certain death to Rudy and his whole family. Look at Zanzibar slave market irl for example despite the Sultan disliking and publicly shaming the treatment even thou he never wanted to end it. He was unable to change it or stop it. He had a whole army and navy yet still couldn't do anything in a world where it had been legal for thousands of years. Same people complain about things not being realistic get a taste of realism and can't handle it. MT so far has done a gd job depicting slavery and the different types from chattel to debtor along with how different societies view it. If people are that upset then prove it stop eating chocolate 90% is from slave labor . MT is a fictional show it's not that deep no different then any other fiction nobody is being harmed.
I guess people need to realize that the story doesn't take place where Democracy and freedom is the norm... but a world where kingdom and rulers exist. Every area has its own institution.
If the main character was the type to impose his own justice because he feel he's right.. he would be trying to be a ruler. He had his chance on his 10th birth day and he decided he wanted nothing to do with it.
I can understand people would be disgusted with slavery in this story and that the main character doesn't do anything about it aside helping one girl. It is possible to fix this, but it would require a lot, including sacrificing whatever he's doing.
People who have a problem with this need to freaking grow up. There is even slavery in our time today but I doubt any of the armchair QBs lift a single finger for stuff happening to REAL people today. Game of Thrones which is the most popular TV show perhaps in history had it and yet it was not an issue.

I still maintain the most controversial part of this was Rudy potentially ending the little girl's life on a whim. That's evil to perhaps the highest degree and also spits in the face of Soldat who prevented him from committing suicide earlier.
the internet's selective outrage is stupid. There are a lot of objectionable things that most folks don't condone that nonetheless make for great plot points in entertainment because It Ain't Real. For some reason, everyone "gets it" when the objectionable thing is murder, but someone will always get upset when the objectionable thing is pretty much anything else.

It’s so exhausting, I’m honestly just tired . Can someone make this people stop, why does everything has to be justified? Enjoy the story or just stop watching it? It’s a medieval world slavery it’s expected, if characters have problems or not with it is also expected, it’s so annoying that this people tries to justify everything or discuss about anything. It’s a system from this world, Rudeus is in no obligation to dispose of it, though he works against it on the shadows, wether he takes action or not SHOULD NOT be a problem, this is a story, IT DOES NOT have to please anyone to be told. If you don’t like it then watch something else, not every film is for everyone, and the crazy thing that they don’t know is that THAT’S OKAY. Instead of crying so much why don’t they actually try to fix actual problem of the real world?

If I lived in a world with mass slavery and was powerless to change the system, you better believe I'd try my best to buy up as many as I could to give them as dignified of a life as I could rather than leave them to be mistreated by others with less scruples... Are people really so intellectually impaired they think leaving a starving girl to die in captivity because you shouldn't "participate in the system" is morally superior to buying her and saving her life?

Most people are just looking to virtue signal. They hear the word slavery and THAT = anime bad. Anime showing a girl gettting raped or murdered gets 0 mention as if thats somhow acceptable.. its just how much controversy can they dredge up is all that matters. Not the fact that the anime has slavery..
You got a bunch of back seat drivers who only willing to speak up cause they know they are surrounded by like minded people. Most people in that situation wouldn't speak out, and those dumb enough to do so would likely end up 6 feet under.
I mean what is Rudeus suppose to do, declare war on the whole country? There were multiple markets in this city all engaging in LEGAL business transactions. You go into someone's place of business upset at what they are doing and trash the place odds are you are gonna end up in jail. If you then try to fight the guards come to arrest you for the criminal activity that just makes your crimes worst.
It's just a bunch of childish virtue signalers who don't understand how the world works.
I'm actually starting to run our of popcorn watching the hate-train steam on by. I've seen so many posts along the lines of "We must all hate Mushoku Tensei!" it's getting hilarious at this point. Even seen plenty from people who admittedly haven't even watched or read MT, and are still complaining about it anyways.
And then there are the NUANCES:
Elaina (Wandering Witch) have personal interaction with a depressed slave girl (ep 3) and has the opportunity to change that girls destiny.

Elaina was brutal. Loved it though. It really did hit similar to Kino's Journey with the hands off approach most of the time.

Much more than the usally nontervercy that isnt even worth discusion for a millisecond: The overall use of slavery in animes is often just lazy writing to either show of the kindness of the "master" or being to lazy to develop a relationship for a compenion or someone who has a skill that is needed at this point of the storry.
Mushoku Tensei isnt one of this even here its clear that the slave is next to useless as she is and is bought for the potential to solve a problem AFTER actually investing in her to grow and learn to be of any use. SO not the usall cheap shortcut writing. And Rudy isnt buying one he is helping in chosing one for Zenoba.

The problem is that the twitter idiots can't make a distinction between certain unmentioned and rather bad isekai anime whose entire plot revolves around "MC buys a hot slave girl who immediately falls in love with him and becomes his waifu" and this. Even the original target of the REEEE crowd, Shield Hero, presented slavery in a horrible light and gave a believable character progression as to why Raphtalia eventually falls in love with Naofume, whereas here I think the thing to notice the most is that Rudeus, one of the biggest horndogs on this entire world, isn't in any way titillated or interested in the big-t*tty slave on display, and certainly does not have those thoughts of Julie. He wants to see her not only saved but redeemed, and absolutely not to become part of his harem.
Just wait till they animate the next episode people gonna be crying for real for real

I really do dislike the aspect of being immediately on the defensive in trying to explain that things like this are okay to exist. I felt genuinely bad for Gigguk when he had to defend himself for liking Season 1. People immediately attacking him and claiming he is supporting Rudeus's likes. His response was similar to mine. Liking AOT doesnt mean you're pro segregation or genocide. Watching Shindler's List doesn't make you pro everything in that. It's fine to experience stories with aspects in it that are not what you agree with.

Don't remember if I already commented about this here, but something I wish to see is Julie process of recovery. Even if they are treating her well you just don't recover from not wanting to live anymore so fast.
But... I don't believe that the story have time to this.
The other thing is... I went to look just at this chapter in the mangá and "aciddentaly" ended reading a bit too much.
There's an encounter in this school that I didn't expect to see. It raises to many questions...
I haven't ran into a Julie perspective yet, but I would love to read one. My interpretation is that because Rudeus asked her if she wanted to die, she thought about it. Ultimately coming to the conclusion that she wanted to live. Thus recovered some desire to move forward at that point, rather than recovering later.
I don't use Twitter and didn't check the reddit discussions for Mushoku so I'm largely ignorant as to what the community thinks of this episode, but I still do want to share my thoughts on it. For a show where roughly half of the dialogue is Rudeus' inner thoughts, the lack thereof during the entire scene bothered me. I do think it's completely understandable if he has just fully adapted into this world and that to him it's just a part of daily life to him, but there wasn't even any line to indicate that. The viewers are just left to interpret on their own what Rudeus thinks of the situation. Then we have a dramatic scene that seemingly shows Rudeus giving her a new leash of life, which felt completely tone deaf considering that there were like 20 other slaves in the same room alone. Like you said it might've been different in the light novel but that's not a very good defense for the anime, the source shouldn't need to supplement the anime especially on sensitive topics like this. To me even just one or two lines of monologue during the long stretch of silence while they were walking through the market would've been enough.
All i will say is if you do not like this anime do not watch it
You know, this episode really remind me of how slavery still exists in the modern world. Like Rudeus, I'm a regular person and I can't do anything about it. Not to bring real world stuff into it, but in some countries there are kids way younger than me working in mines or doing manual labor all day almost everday. Even in shows like Arcane kids are forced to fight by the main Villain Silco. And Jinx works for him.
It's very disturbing, you can't change everyone else, but you can make more of it in your own way. Not my fav EP, but more in context another step in the story.

I do not like how you defend Rudeus. Not because attack on him is justified, but because your points are bad. The very first thing people need to process that MC isnt there to insert yourself into. He has his own life, his own fears and ideas. You dont have to approve and agree with everything he does. Its plain stupid to get angry that MC doent do what you want him to do, or has some very questionable character traits. If you believe that he should just save the world, instead of barking at him you can just go and save real living people, and if you cant save them all then be prepered to answer to others similar attacks.
