    • @AWDfreak
      @AWDfreak ปีที่แล้ว +32

      The customers that want a manual transmission are no longer relevant to the brand. That's how much they're betting on the Lineartronic CVT and standard EyeSight to get that IIHS safety rating for accident avoidance technology. The writing is already on the wall, the current manual transmission offerings will be the last.

    • @8JFJK8
      @8JFJK8 ปีที่แล้ว +38

      @@AWDfreak Except most the people who care about all that safety technology and CVT stuff are buying Corollas and Camrys or foresters and Outbacks… not Impreza RS’s. Maybe thats what they want.

    First I'll start off by saying that Subaru did a good business move in streamlining the Impreza lineup to a more practical hatchback.
    It is also a good move to bring back the RS model. However I feel like Subaru missed out on a good opportunity to make the RS more appealing to enthusiasts on a budget that also need something practical by not offering it with a good manual transmission. The old manual Impreza models never sold well because they were not really that appealing and the manual transmission it's self was not that good. They could had at least adapted the manual transmission from the BRZ to make it a nicer shifting manual option.

    I like it. My first car was an ‘05 2.5L RS. Those were slightly over 120 hp. The cruise control acceleration was faster than using the gas pedal. It was a hatchback and a 5 speed. Am just wondering what's the appeal of an Outback 2.5L if it produces the same power i.e. 180hp or thereabouts as a Crosstrek and soon as a 2.5L RS....? Am not sure who to blame but I blame Toyota for buying out Subaru and mass producing (or over-producing) the things that endear those who love and are loyal to Subarus, huge profits notwithstanding. Can't fault the profit making, it's a business after all, but what changes they're doing to the traditional Subaru as we know it, doing away with manuals, CVT gearboxes et cetera, that's the hard bit to take. Maybe with time we'll accept the changes but for now, it's disappointing.

    • @tlopez2608
      @tlopez2608 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Isotope387 yea unfortunately many other car makes are changing their legacy to cater to the masses. This 2.5 RS in reality is not like the old RS. It’s the product of pushing something out for sales. To me it’s just an Impreza with more power. The RS of the past was more than that. If it came with a hood scoop and little vents, as well as a manual, I could live with the rest of compromises.

      Not unless you take the car up to mountains often. CVT is generally fine in city and highways. But i've takena crosstrek over highways in mountains with slopes and downhills the CVT generally struggles at one thing, pulling torque out. with 20-30% slope angles and long climbs rated at 120km/h standard. The car likes to rev to 3500 to even 4000 rpm. But you feel like theres no power to push. You just see the speedo going down while revs keeps climbing. Gets worse on summer days with A/C on.
      Other than that one issue with delivering torque, the CVT is fine in everyday driving, just not great when you take it up mountainous regions. It'll manage but will struggle even with the 2.5L.

    • @evoman44
      @evoman44 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      It's ironic how the previous Impreza that was available with manual and not a very good one at that, did not sell well mostly because it was not a compelling package like this new RS model. And now that it's finally appealing it no longer has a manual which is the very thing that the typical RS buyer would be interested in.

    very nice first-glance review! I'm a huge fan of compacts and this was going to be a serious contender for my next daily driver.
    ...but it won't be.
    I hate to jump on the no-manual-no-care train, but this is a serious point. I'm not sure who they are targetting with this car, but I have to assume it's a buyer who has a serious axis on driving enjoyment and chooses to put aside creature comforts (and automation) in favour of envolvement. This new Impreza definitely seems to hit many great marks, but the serious bump stop here is the CVT-everywhere, no more manual option thing.
    Compact cars are a dying breed, as we all know. If someone wants a comfy commuter, there are a meriad of commuter-grade and performance-grade CUVs and SUVs to suit every need and want, all with many ways of automating gear ratios. The number of manually shifted options are probably counted on one hand now. Also, to release a brand new car in 2022 (for the 2024 MY) without any hint of electrification option is...ehhh...lacking foresight? The Crosstrek can already be had with Toyota's Rav4 hybrid drive system reassembled in a longitudinal configuration and holds onto Subaru's mechanical AWD and bxer engine. Very cool. Only available on the topest of top trim. (why?)
    Flame suit on, but this car equipped with a gas engine should have been manual only, and base trims should have been a parallel hybrid system. Heck, the 2.5RS should be the only Impreza available with a gas-only engine and only have a manual trans. Everything else should have some form of hybridization. They already build a 6-speed manual transmission for this platform that bolts to this engine. And if you don't fancy shifting your own gears, this should make every use of hybridization as possible as the driver axis on pure driving enjoyment isn't really there anyway. Why burn more gas for no enjoyment?
    Trims should ahve been :
    2.0L + parallel hybrid (automatic only)
    2.0L + PHEV (automatic only)
    2.5L + 6-speed manual (from WRX)
    Anyway, I like the updated styling, interior space and normal analog gauges (also a dying feature), hate that massive tablette. I would have considered it had it had a serious hybrid option. Would have loved it for its performance throwback had it had a manual.
    Oh well.
    FWIW, I'm 33, have 2 kids but my wife wants the bigger squishier car for kid duties. Me? I have a 2014 Mazda3 with a 6-speed manual and a 2001 6-speed manual Miata now tucked away for the winter. One day, I'll have to replace my Mazda3, but it's doing really well. I'm really looking for an excellent hybrid (preferrably PHEV) option in the compact car segment, as light and cheap as humanly possible with a serious axis on driving pleasure. So far, maybe the Kia Niro, maybe the Corolla AWD, maybe even a damn Prius. Mazda hasn't done anything with electrification, and I see Subaru is on the same page.

    i love that subaru has an affordable wagon competing with corolla and civic! it's fantastic because where the others lack in rear seat headroom and legroom and also luggage space, this car has all of it! But, no actual spare tire and a full center console touch screen with no easy dials or buttons for temperature controls, and an apple car play system that isn't even proven to work are all very bad signs. hopefully the outback sport (impreza) has an actual spare tire and more space dedicated to actual dials and buttons on the console. As a city driver though, i am of the unusual standpoint that I embrace a CVT, but only if it's not trying to be something its not, i don't want it to immitate a manual, or a traditional automatic. I want a CVT to be an honest smooth reliable transmission. after just recently needing a rebuilt transmission on my camry, i've learned that for a city driver, a good CVT might be a more durable choice than a traditional transmission, no gears, less pieces to break, as long as you do the timely fluid service intervals, a good cvt should last just as long if not longer than a traditional auto.
