That’s the thing with Subaru. It seems that the brand is dead set on never fully delivering on the users needs and wants.
      - Want a faster infotainment system? Too bad, we signed the deal with the provider since the 2020 Outback and we’re stuck with those screens for 10 years.
      - Want a more capable Crosstrek? We’re keeping the engines from the prior gen. No turbos or improvements. And we’re sticking the laggy infotainment too.
      - Want the STI back? Nope, it’s an SUV market now. CVT and 182hp it is.
Not to say they also have some great products, but with these guys there’s always a compromise.

@@Kilaueaorph4n Its about volume selling. That's why manuals are dying. We used to have great sport cars that were cheap interiors but amazing powertrain. Leasing a car is now overtaking owning, so people are leasing luxury brands at the same price of buying. Cut engine and powertrain for more interior. Mass consumers want a better interior.
The enthusiast segment is shrinking. I'd love to go back to the days of an MR2, S2000, Old Gen Golf where we didnt care about interior. Drove to Best Buy, gutted the speakers and put in and Pioneer headunit where you had to walk to the trunk to swap out CDs. You have to have it off the lot with the best tech now.
The market isnt there anymore. Interiors are a better selling point, living with CA traffic.... I get it. And with the move to electric... yeah, no more flagship STI, SHO, etc because R&D needs to be put there now.
Its a weird time to be an enthusiast as that lake is drying but manufactures are trying to bring those nostalgic names back for marketing.

If you are a car enthusiast on a budget you simply can't afford a brand new WRX no matter how much you may want one. The previous Impreza sport never sold well because it was underpowered, unattractive and even the manual 5 speed was rubbery and imprecise. So if your a serious car enthusiast on a budget looking for something new your options is something like the Civic Sport that is still available with a manual or just buy a used WRX with high miles that is within your budget. I my self had to buy a used 05 WRX 10 years ago because I could not afford a new one at the time. But it has served me well and still enjoy driving it.

  • @serenityinsilence

Honestly, Subaru should have offered this trim with a manual. They didn’t give us a turbo version, no manual, and won’t listen to consumers about making a hatchback wrx. Subaru is turning into a boring car company slowly but surely. That’s coming from someone who has owned multiple Subarus and still drives one now.

    • @m1a1tcom

    • @evoman44
      @evoman44 ปีที่แล้ว

Back when the WRX hatchback was being produced the take rate was about 50/50. The reason Subaru gave why they stopped making the hatchback for the 2015-2022 generation was because they didn't have the budget to produce two variants of the WRX. I have known many former hatchback owners that loved them but would not buy another one in less it was a hatchback. So clearly the market is there for practical hot hatchbacks just that Subaru does not want to invest in them.

@@evoman44 thats eons ago. You have to look at sales data on what is selling currently. I bet you that even if they bring back a hot hatch, crosstrek will out sell wrx 3 to 1. Hell the impreza will still out sell it 2 to 1. Unfortunately us car enthuisatist will suffer no matter what.

I think this is what the WRX should look like. I love the mid 2000's version of the STI and I really liked the hatchback STI that they released before. This kind of falls in line with that styling. Honestly, even at the base model's price on the Impreza, it's a fantastic deal. Standard Subaru AWD and all of the safety features for $19,800 or so. Truly a solid deal considering how expensive most every other vehicle is in 2023

However, my 2018 is still running well, and I dont drive much since I retired, so really cant justify trading. The new RS is also a bit expensive. If they put the 2.5L in all models, the "Sport" model would be a better value proposition.

I think it's poor to think that if you want more than what the impreza can offer, that the only option is the WRX, they should just put the 1.8 turbo in the impreza and give it 200hp and 215lbs cvt only and the more aggressive awd and calll it a day. I think it would make a night and day differenc and more people would transfer over to subaru as a brand

    • @evoman44

Exactly! Not everyone can afford a WRX. Plus not everyone needs are met with a sedan. The 1.8 turbo would be a happy medium for those buyers that need the practicality of a hatchback without sacrificing too much on performance. Plus a model like that would naturally have a higher manual transmission take rate.

I have never owned a car without a manual transmission, which means my next car won't be an Impreza and maybe not even a Subaru. Here in Canada, once you get heavy rain or ice or snow, the manual transmission feels a lot safer; my wife's Subaru is not manual. Nice review! Enthusiast's desire for manuals doesn't seem to carry over to general population as most manual vehicles have sold poorly (WRX is one exception). Nice that Ryan gives a well designed CVT its due and shows it does keep an engine at its maximum power output during acceleration.

Only problem with the "if you want more performance get a WRX" is that you cant get a hatchback, which both looks better (IMO) and is more practical than the sedan. What I wish Subaru would do is make the 2.5L standard in the Crosstrek/Impreza and add a mildly tuned turbo (210 hp or so) for the Sport or RS models. That would give you a nice middle ground between the modest performing models we have now and the all out performance WRX.

Unlike a lot of people who have complained about the lack of a manual, I have actually purchased a non-performance Subaru with a manual brand new (though that was 9 years ago). [So the remarks of "yOu wOuLdN'D hAvE bOuGhT iT aNyWaYs" do not apply to me.] The fact that they brought back the RS without a manual transmission pretty much killed a good portion of people who would have considered buying an Impreza RS as a fun fuel-efficient daily driver.
