And man DRIBBLE ON THE LINE TRY TO TAKE ON A PLAYER even if turns out to be a physical battle on the line this helps you in creating scoring opportunities! Losing the ball in the opponents half when trying to get forward and create space is better then losing it to a bad pass!
You should watch phillip lahm videos. He was a right foot playing LB and he used to be the best LB in the world. Maybe look also at cancelo who likes to be an inverted defender (plays wide but in the build up goes centre and opens game)
@@geert811 No as a German I can confirm that he was a left back for a long period of time. The opening goal in the 2006 WC was scored by Lahm by cutting inside from the left side. Then he became a right back but as we had not really a decent left back there was a huge discussion where he should play. Left or right? After that he also became a CM because of Guardiola. I've watched nearly every analysis you have. What comes back every game time and time again is you have excellent position and athleticism, but what's killing your progression and what'll turn scouts off is your mid range and long range passing inconsistency. You should turn more to your good foot and perfect those crosses, and only use your lesser foot as a last resort. Scouts would rather see an excellent 1 footed player than a player with 2 bad feet.
Ravencroft You are right, plus he isnt a risk taker he has a big body and can push through with the ball on the wing but he never does, so he is never in good positions to cross well!
Hey Matt! I was wondering if you tend not to play big cross-field passes because of the tactics, or because of some other reasons. Like at 1:42 and some other spots, it looks like there's room for the right back to take a pass. Is that too risky at the level you play at? Just trying to learn and get better, because I like to play cross field passes like that. Great video! So glad you're back starting :)
On this one the thing that stood out to me the most is that you look too static waiting for the ball to get to you, you are not anticipating those passes. You have to look more active/jumpy or you invite pressure. Take a step or two towards the ball to shorten the time it takes to get it, or at least do a small bounce or anything to signal that you might be making a move, that can buy you an extra moment when the defender hesitates. First touch looked much sharper on this video vs the last one I saw.
I’ve been watching your videos for some time now and your journey is very inspiring, I believe in you and hope you become even better!Understandably, everything is easier said than done but thought I’d say some things you may or may not take into account. And if anyone else agrees/disagrees with what I’m about to explain I’d be happy to hear to it. So here goes.. At 5:10, 1) knowing the winger is quick 2) seeing the opposition’s center mid is wide open receiving the ball...IN THIS SPECIFIC SITUATION maybe it wasn’t the best to be so tight on the winger. Instead maybe it would have been better to have pinched in a little closer to your center back because you would have had to read the potential pass to the center mid which could turn into a little slight 2 on 1 situation on the side. Since you were too far outside, the wide open center mid was able to pass into that threatening space created between you and your center back for the fast winger to cut in. If you were on the inside your positioning would have benefited you in a number of ways. 1) you would have eliminated the center mid’s option to pass into a “hole” that was created by you being outside 2) it wouldn’t have given the winger a dangerous space to exploit which in turn would force him to stay outside (or to do anything but that successful penetrating run) 3) you would have had at least a few steps ahead of the winger in a foot race if the center mid did try to make some sort of through pass to him. Since it was a quick and tight play it probably would have forced the winger to stay out wide. However, if you pinched in, you would have allowed the winger to be open wide. But I would rather allow the center mid to pass to an open winger on the outside rather than a threatening pass to a fast winger who was open for a split second on the inside. I think that would have been the safer option to do since you would still have been in front of the ball to choose a different time to pressure. At 10:45, What you did AFTER the winger received the ball was good..but him receiving the ball in his favor before hand could have been avoided. I’m not sure if this is what your coach wants but the space between you and your center back is pretty big. A difference of 5 yards in position can make a big impact. This situation is different than the first mentioned above but, again, it might have been better to be a little more inside. Like the previous situation, the winger received the ball in between you and your center back but this time it came from the opposite side of the field. Still, you can’t show the winger the inside. There are many possibilities that could have happened, but if you were 5 maybe 10 yards inside, there wouldn’t have been that threatening space for the winger to run into and you would have eliminated that center mid’s option to pass. The winger wouldn’t have any other choice than to make a run wider or just simply stay where he was at exactly 10:44. I would rather take my chances being inside where i could have been in better position to intercept the long ball. Or if the winger were to still be able to receive the ball, I’d still be on the inside forcing him outside and hopefully forcing the player back or cutting off his teammates. As for the rest of the game, aside from the first 15 minutes I think you played great. I love your style and soccer IQ possession wise on the pitch. Although it might help to be creative, you’re a right back that’s doing your job. You don’t really have that many opportunities to be creative to begin with but i think you’re making smart decisions in when to capitalize and when not to
I think at 10:43 and thereabout, the fault is really on the CBs (though he should have stayed closer as you said). BOTH CBs went to the right wing to close the wingers. At that point he, the left back, was in the right CB's position. There was no balance and the winger had nice position whether Matt had tried to push him wider or not. No matter what, the winger would still have had a good chance at a shot if he received the ball. The CBs were quite dunce in that case...
While we can agree you were a bit sloppy with passes, what bugs me the most is the lack of attacking runs on your part. I can see you were being marked, but most of the time you resorted to simple passes to your teammates. Try work on your pace and acceleration. You had miles of empty space upfront in this game, it's just you didn't take chances to surge forward.
@Bryan Ramos Yeah, maybe you are right, and maybe it's just the way Matt plays, but I hope to see a more adventurous version of Matt Sheldon. The type of fullback that runs like hell when the team is on the counterattack.
100% agree man, as a LB/RB you need to also be a threat, creating overlaping runs, drilling the ball into the middle. Best fullbacks create and even score a few goals each season
One thing that I noticed is that you could be standing higher up the line during the build up play. For example, at 11:30 you could move up so that you're standing in line with or maybe even higher than the winger close to you. If you do that, when you get the ball you're already in front of him and can attack forwards instead of playing sideways to your centre mid like you usually do. I also play as a fullback and that tip really helped me when I got it. Of course you've got much more experience than me but I just want to help and give you my feedback on what I noticed!
This was a good game by you ,you played well out of position ,you criticise yourself too much ,i normally play well but look at every mistake i make and it takes someone to tell me i played well
Kairi HD, I was thinking the same. When u start to say ur not playing well or it's sloppy u begin to believe every next play is gonna be 'sloppy'. Every play would be best looked at objectively and optimistically
In all honesty, this was one of your better games and you improved your play significantly. You created chances and played smarter in the offense, especially in the first half. In the second you started falling back into your previous routine of playing it too safe.. which is not helpful if you are behind. For example here at 13:34.. you backs are waaaaaay to far back. Two goals behind, you should be at the middle line at least, maybe as a last resort one of you further back. You did point out the more offensive and smarter plays you could have made though, so we would love to see them in the future! In my opinion your two center backs are at fault here, especially Nr. 42. I saw him making major mistakes at all 3 conceded goals. His positioning and decision making is horrendous. And for the love of Cristiano Ronaldo, cover both goals posts at corners, this has been standard practice for years. That second goal was absolutely not necessary.^^
Great video!!! Why don't you vlog your preparations before like you did couple of weeks ago in the 6-0 loss. I like seeing what a footballer prepares for before the game.
When you said "playing it safe" I completely flipped. You tought me to take risks, you yourself didn't play it safe and look where you are now!!! A professional soccer player.
If a manager is playing a right-footed player as left-back, he should ask his left winger to create width hence creating underlapping opportunities for the inverted side-back. If you would have made underlaps rather than overlaps the manager could have extracted a lot more out of you. Comparing with Manchester City, City uses Sane and Sterling to create width while Walker makes underlaps creating a lot of confusion for the opposition. However, Great Game Matt, it is tough to come out of injury and play top-level matches.
Around the 85th minute even if you didn’t wanna take it on your left, you should’ve just taken a touch towards the centre and clipped it in with your right looking for a run at the back post for them to hopefully head it back into the corridor of uncertainty and look for a scrappy goal
i guess you really gonna make it as a coach, cause you like to take the time to watch the flaws and make it better, and also you got a really nice reading of the game.
I was happy to see you play with a more attacking style last time against Sacramento. This time I felt you took too many safe decisions again. Don't underestimate your attacking threat.
In 11:35 I would have take my left foot and with the first touch I would run down the line. (It is important that you move during the first touch to win the 1vs1)
Hey man!!! You've got great skills!!! Maybe you can work hardee on your "change of direction skills" with inside cuts (mainly) and outside cuts, they are a good way to dribble in small places and beat defenders, to create space. I think that you can improve your game in a 100% if you train some space creating movements (in the simplest way possible)!!! Your team will appreciate it a lot, cause they don't seem very technical and keep losing the ball too easily with bad crossings, bad dribblings and so many bad desitions in the last quarter of the field!!!
Think you should work on creating separation between you and the defender so you can have more time on the ball. Maybe you should bait your defender so you can create space and so you can create out of the back. Also maybe you can work on creating off that first touch. Overall solid performance by you. As a coach and former player I always found myself playing more of a defensive game when playing against someone who is more skilled than and faster than I was. Overall great game.
You heal strike when running. Which means you're your probably knee dominant when you run as apposed to hip dominant which can slow you down and is not as energy efficient. Keep up the great videos tho.
@@jackyz3101 I can see him running :) I can notice his center of mass isn't forward as much as it could be either. This can effect reaction times. He's always striving to be better which is why I mentioned it. A decent local sprinting coach would notice it and could help him improve
Matt loosen up man. Your moves come off too mechanical. You can run through cones but fell to get passed real opposing players. You’re playing it safe all the time and you’re the bigger more athletic player. It feels like you’re psychologically defeated on the pitch. Football is not about beating cones man. Dominate your enemies.
samdowski my personal tip is to mentally prepare you should’ve prepared physically in advance believe in yourself and show wat you’ve worked for go at it man!
I am a D1 u14 soccer player and this game was playing to slow and "safe" and the passes were not firm and lousy, your team was also not coming back fast enough and left a fat gap in the defensive 3rd and i would keep going on saying what your team should've improved in but that would make me sound like a prick. Also try and sprint alot at gyms amd above hills with explosive steps that could help you guys be faster and have better stamina
I honestly feel sorry for you, you played sooooo well the problem is your cm don’t go into the space and they don’t go to the ball they expect to receive it rather than go to it. Well played
FWIW My assessment; First half you starved your Left-mid of the ball by always playing right footed and coming inside. This also made you predictable, increasing the pressure on yourself. Better to try outside every now and again. Your LM looks decent, use him. Second half; You have to use & trust your left foot more to open up your body but overall performance was better. Don't worry about the 85min left footed cross, your forwards didn't trust it anyway, neither made a run.
You guys need to play more 1 on 1 and go into challenges, Matt is already doing it but the rest not so much. More (good) aggressiveness needed! I don't wanna sound like an expert but my Sunday league team last season had the same exact problems and we improved so much when started going into challenges and 1 on 1 situations with more confidence. Also the pressure in the defense needs to be up! Be confident Matt!!
You could've avoided losing possession in the beginning if you just opened up to your left foot quickly and play your winger or run down the line and play some one more central
When it is tight try to hold the ball under your feet for a extra second or two, or move the ball a inch or two so space is created or move the ball between ur feet slowly You would need to watch Achraf Hakimi he is one footed like you and plays out of position a lot. Also try to let them foul you because you are good at protecting the ball with your back to the players. Anyways most wrong passes that you made were because of the CM #6 who should give you better passing options. Anyways great game
You did what you could on your end. The other 10 need to step it up in the next match. 9 goals conceded and 1 scored in the last 2 matches is concerning. But im sure everyone will get 3 points vs Portland
Matej Patrun I sincerely doubt your under 16 team is technically gifted enough to over power their physicality let alone their technicality. In a match they’d 100% beat you unless you were under 16 for some big club.
Dont you think watching the ball too much as a defender is the reason why wingers get so many passes ? I played 3 seasons as a left full back and i kept my eyes only on the enemie.
Your team struggles with creating space and looking towards the space for players to enter and balls to be placed. I guess that awareness comes with training but something that surely has to be focused on in order to both exploit easy opportunities but also reduce the probability of losing the ball. No point passing to players that are being marked until the final third.
I never talk about simple touch I do in game. I feel like no need to talk about it.cuz it's just simple. But skills is very important in soccer. Dribbling, kicking strong , score .make good runs .that's typical thing that make a player special and good . Honestly we do at meet up better game then what I see on here .
At 2:10 number 12 was available. Idk if the coach is having you guys play short passes but I personally would have gone for it to switch the point of attack, you had too much pressure to force that pass
Im no professional. Hell im not qualified to critic Matt, but at 14:36, wouldnt a cut inside and a shot on goal be attempted? The forward runs down the line which created a ton of space in the middle
Max Colin- The GOAT you put pace on it and there’s a chance cause the keeper will wait for an attacker to see because if they it gets a touch it will change the direction of the ball.
Just for 5:13....how I fix that brooo is that I don't press neither guy rather cover the space in behind...and I know players/manager gon rage bout you not pressing but doin that you sacrafice space leavin you exposed
You cannot be a TH-camr and a player at the same time ..... you have to focus .... your game lacks focus. Ask a teammate to help you learn how to carry the ball upfield instead of automatic aimless touches. Ask your coach for direction about what he expects from you tactically. Ask for someone else to analyze your game. That's time well spent. Stop the vlogging and wasting your time on amusing others. Start learning.
Matt, why aren't you checking your shoulders most of the times? Also, please just cut in whenever winger comes onto you, you always try and play it safe by passing to a teammate, try taking initiative
@@kevinhampton3346 The offside rule is judged at the moment that the initial pass is played, and since this pass is a long pass from the other end of the field we can't see the position of the attacking players at the moment the pass is made to judge if they were in an offside position or not. So from this video it is impossible to tell if anyone was offside when the initial ball is played. It is possible that the guy was offside initially, but ran back onside to head the long pass whilst the ball was in the air. If the defenders also moved in the other direction towards their goal at the same time, this would explain why he looks onside by the time the ball reaches him. Or it may have just been another forward who was offside, but not involved in play. But the assistant ref raised his flag early in case the other guy won the header and managed to flick it on to the offside forward. Technically the ref shouldn't judge offside until the offside player either touches the ball or interferes with play, but sometimes they make a mistake, and just raise their flag early if they see someone in an offside position.

Kairi HD, I was thinking the same. When u start to say ur not playing well or it's sloppy u begin to believe every next play is gonna be 'sloppy'. Every play would be best looked at objectively and optimistically
No hate but...who came up with these club name's??
The real monarchs are the affiliate of real salt lake, a mls team
Brendan Nd it’s American teams what do u expect u have sport teams in america like la lakers or la galaxy
It’s USA what do you expect😂
This is American. They make up names like the Texas Tuffers and the Washington Washers
and what would u name them since u are so thoughtful
You should try futsal it really helps you with tight areas
I love your video man, I play the same position and i know exactly how you feel when receiving the ball from the centerback and no one is open.
I actually learn to play better watching these. THX
1st!
love the analysis videos!!!
Love ur videos man. Much love from Florida

The MLS Zone i just mean that it is the first comment that youtube shows
In all honesty, this was one of your better games and you improved your play significantly.
Yes I’ve been waiting for this video
Uu i love your content keep up the good work
Great video!!! Why don't you vlog your preparations before like you did couple of weeks ago in the 6-0 loss. I like seeing what a footballer prepares for before the game.
The Football Views bro we can’t expect that much it would be pretty sick but his teams not in their best form and they need to focus
@@chrismascarenhas1059 good point brother. They are near the bottom last time I check?
16/18 I searched up on google right now but when Matt gets his form back they should be much higher
Great video Matt!
When you said "playing it safe" I completely flipped. You tought me to take risks, you yourself didn't play it safe and look where you are now!!! A professional soccer player.
Let's go game analysis
lol i used to play with the centerback walid right next to you as a kid u should interview him
Play it long! Your Cb is always opening play by passing it to you so you should give it wide to the other side of the pitch
MATTT YOU NEED TO POST MORE OFTEN
If a manager is playing a right-footed player as left-back, he should ask his left winger to create width hence creating underlapping opportunities for the inverted side-back. If you would have made underlaps rather than overlaps the manager could have extracted a lot more out of you. Comparing with Manchester City, City uses Sane and Sterling to create width while Walker makes underlaps creating a lot of confusion for the opposition. However, Great Game Matt, it is tough to come out of injury and play top-level matches.
Thank you for this Matt.. 👌
Matt pls do a analysis video on other positions in ur team
Just like urs... it'll be very useful for many of us
Around the 85th minute even if you didn’t wanna take it on your left, you should’ve just taken a touch towards the centre and clipped it in with your right looking for a run at the back post for them to hopefully head it back into the corridor of uncertainty and look for a scrappy goal
i guess you really gonna make it as a coach, cause you like to take the time to watch the flaws and make it better, and also you got a really nice reading of the game.
Hey I just want you to know I am a kid that is trying to go pro and I just want to say you have helped me a lot 🙏 thank you
I was happy to see you play with a more attacking style last time against Sacramento. This time I felt you took too many safe decisions again. Don't underestimate your attacking threat.
Hey Matt, I wanted to know do you know what your average distance covered per game is? Thanks
10th minute back post... good defending
Hey does it matter if you practice with socks instead of cleats? (Like juggling at home and practicing touches)
Legendary no
In general no, but your practices should be as realistic as possible. So unless you play matches in socks, shoes/cleats are ideal.
One day I will be playing with you after collage save me a roster spot
lol
Aim for the premier league and youll at least reach MLS
@@evaincefone9051 Ight good shit on the advice
Think you should work on creating separation between you and the defender so you can have more time on the ball. Maybe you should bait your defender so you can create space and so you can create out of the back. Also maybe you can work on creating off that first touch. Overall solid performance by you. As a coach and former player I always found myself playing more of a defensive game when playing against someone who is more skilled than and faster than I was. Overall great game.
arm to the chest, arm to the chest. --- thank you thank you, the key thing I learned from this video.
Hi Matt, i have a question: in the USL teams there is a person on the coach team who just analyse de rivals?
5:05 forearm incident & 7:45 good example of what to do.
That number 47 just plays plain dirty
Weird field to play on
It's a baseball field
Yeah it's the home field for the Dodgers AA team
@@brokenlink06 I'm from Portugal so no one cares about baseball😂
Jeff needs to improve his passes.
You heal strike when running. Which means you're your probably knee dominant when you run as apposed to hip dominant which can slow you down and is not as energy efficient. Keep up the great videos tho.
How can you tell?
@@jackyz3101 I can see him running :) I can notice his center of mass isn't forward as much as it could be either. This can effect reaction times. He's always striving to be better which is why I mentioned it. A decent local sprinting coach would notice it and could help him improve
Matt loosen up man. Your moves come off too mechanical. You can run through cones but fell to get passed real opposing players. You’re playing it safe all the time and you’re the bigger more athletic player. It feels like you’re psychologically defeated on the pitch. Football is not about beating cones man. Dominate your enemies.
I have a tryout tmm for my local youth 14 city team, any tips
samdowski my personal tip is to mentally prepare you should’ve prepared physically in advance believe in yourself and show wat you’ve worked for go at it man!
1:45 might be worthwhile to highlight, your pass killed your midfielder there, bobbling with pace ahah
Good game, love how you recognize your mistakes!
Don't worry about the 85min left footed cross, your forwards didn't trust it anyway, neither made a run.
the center back looks like wilfried zaha
13:15 switch to opposite full back would been a good option
JT Stephens not enough time and space to
@@MrSunnyyangyang he had plenty of both could have played the exact same pass just to the full back not upfield to the striker
When it is tight try to hold the ball under your feet for a extra second or two, or move the ball a inch or two so space is created or move the ball between ur feet slowly
You would need to watch Achraf Hakimi he is one footed like you and plays out of position a lot.
Why do you wear the old Nike Mercurial s instead of the Vapor 12 or 13?
Do you know Micheal (7mcl) if you know this guy , you must record some traning or video
What r the wages compared to other clubs out of the USA

I have been a fan for a while now, but honestly, NO HATE, I think my under 16 team play better than both of this teams...
Matej Patrun technically maybe but physically you’d get absolutely demolished with strength and speed
Alright Matej, whatever you say bud
@@hamlinmonday4692 ofcourse that is because they are older and we didnt grew up yet, but tehnically we are better
@@JakeBGoalkeeping its true
Make a series where you train your week foot
In the 72nd minute why did you do that big kick when you didn't need to? You just gave them the ball and the forward a hard ball to deal with?
He wouldn't be able to get a good enough angle to shoot
I wouldn’t say shoot as such but I would say try and hit the back post with a cross and if no one touches it could go in.
@@ilopjpop6554 it wouldn't go in. Theres a keeper
Max Colin- The GOAT you put pace on it and there’s a chance cause the keeper will wait for an attacker to see because if they it gets a touch it will change the direction of the ball.
why are you not wearing your green mercurials???
Just for 5:13....how I fix that brooo is that I don't press neither guy rather cover the space in behind...and I know players/manager gon rage bout you not pressing but doin that you sacrafice space leavin you exposed
Is there grass on the spots on the pitch or what?
FINALLY⚽️
Try to take more risks
yeah dude you way too good for that team... look for better option if you can. you dope
This team honestly needs a better coaching staff
i think you need to change position and turn inyo a winger
He isn’t direct enough to be a winger.
i know
you should hit your center mid more often
You cannot be a TH-camr and a player at the same time ..... you have to focus .... your game lacks focus. Ask a teammate to help you learn how to carry the ball upfield instead of automatic aimless touches. Ask your coach for direction about what he expects from you tactically. Ask for someone else to analyze your game. That's time well spent. Stop the vlogging and wasting your time on amusing others. Start learning.
he heavily critics his team mates, but equally makes the same mistakes. He comes or egotistical at times even though he is a pretty average player.
You should do a video about your childhood.
Is it somehow possible to purchase your Become Elite shirt?
Mo zi on his website
@@emanuelb4289 I can't actually find the link to the shirt.
Mo zi there used to be more apparel on his website but I just found a jacket so he probably doesn’t sell them anymore
Matt, why aren't you checking your shoulders most of the times? Also, please just cut in whenever winger comes onto you, you always try and play it safe by passing to a teammate, try taking initiative
14:25 how was that offsides when the player heading the ball has opposition behind him?
You need to look at the offside rule again
Max Colin- The GOAT Explain to me why it was offsides then I’m not ashamed of not knowing i’m always trying to learn the game more
@@kevinhampton3346 The offside rule is judged at the moment that the initial pass is played, and since this pass is a long pass from the other end of the field we can't see the position of the attacking players at the moment the pass is made to judge if they were in an offside position or not.
Seb Fox Thank you, I appreciate the explanation. That all makes sense.
People do know that his team may not be asking him to attack as much right? Some teams need there defensive line to hold a little more.
Why do you guys play on baseball field
