Matt you are a gret example of the phrase "hard work pays off " my friend. Im coming back from an acl injury but I have several open try outs coming up at the end of the year. & watching your videos just motivates me man. Only thing that makes me happy is playing the beautiful sport.
07:55 Why would you run into a crowd? I love when players run into a crowd to actually dribble, but its a rare skill that only players like Messi masters. Now you didn’t even try to dribble. You went in to get a foul, what the fuck is that. You have 5 choices that are valid in this situation, Ima rank it from hardest to easiest. 1) Dribble trough the crowd 2) Cut inside the pitch, its a lot of room there (still not easy) 3) Play to the winger right after your touch. It needs to be quick. He could then play to the cam in the middle, or do some magic. If you do this you have to stay for the supporting option 4) play to the center back behind you who can then switch the play. I’m unsure about the speed of witch the striker is running towards the striker is running towards the CB with, but it should be possible if done quickly. If the striker closes the CB down to fast, then this ain’t an option 5) play the ball all the way to the keeper 6 Hit a ball in the space behind the back 4 towards the opposite winger The situation you are in here is a difficult one, but that is because of your teammates. This is what should happen from the players around you to create space. The CB on your side needs to drop deeper, all the way to the side. This way the Striker will have to choose between him and the other CB. This way its space to turn the play on one of the CB’s. 2) The CAM should drop deeper, into the room in the middle. This will make the room he is occupying clear for your striker. 3) tThe striker should drop into the CAMs position. 4) The holding midfielder should meet in the room between the oppositions striker and the guy pressing you. Not all the way, but enough for a passing lane. 5) The Midfielder nearest the Ref should start a run in behind the defence, this will make up the threat behind the back 4 now that the striker has dropped deep. This simple steps should be automatic at this level. You do ofcourse need to be patient and hold the ball 1-2 seconds longer, to let them do the movements. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. Your team is really bad. Atleast when it comes to football IQ. You need to calm down. The ball is allowed to go backwards and side to side. Just hold it, relax, its your best friend.
Matt been watching ur videos for around a year now and u have helped me improve a lot now I have a trail for one of the best teams in my country this week❤️
Hi matt, i am a right back too but i notice that ur team dont take risks to make a good play to score, like a 1-2 with a midfielder i do all the time but than the midfielder has to fall back as well:)
Matt is really solid on the defending part as a rightback btw, the small details matters, like putting your forearm on the wingers chest if he takes you on a 1v1
@6:22, your mindset here should just be to "stand up" the winger so you close down the space without getting too close to him then go from there when it's 1v1 or you delay and your team get behind it or he makes a mistake/goes backwards or worst case scenario he takes you on down the line 1v1. What happened is you tried to win the ball back rather than defend the space. So by rushing in so fast you just beat yourself. Also I think you misread where he was going, it looked like you thought he was going down the line so you were massively off balance when he did go inside. Not the CB's fault here as other comments have said but unfortunately Matt's but it's a huge opportunity to learn because your mindset of trying to win the ball in that spot is what led to the error.
Matt likes to put the blame on his teammates. Seen him do this multiple times, that's what really turned me off about him as a player. Dude loses the ball, with the speed of that attack you can not put the blame on the other players. that was all you bro.
Great video! One thing I notice from all the game analysis is the “fear of making mistakes”. Don’t know if you realize this but you’re a skillfull, athletic player and master of the ball Matt, more so than the third of the guys on the field. And this mindset of making the perfect play and the right timing is holding you back from sharpening your offense and slowing you down on deffenses. You’ve got it Matt! Play more instinctual football and dictate how you want to play to your teamate every time. They will have to learn to play with you and that will help them grow as well.
Happy birthday Matt! I wish you lots of happiness, and success in your future. And I truly hope to meet you 1 day. Especially if you play against NC FC. Thank you so much for being so open and to share so much content that helps me and other players get closer towards their dreams. You're such a big motivation, Matt! Happy birthday and I hope you enjoyed it!
As an LA Galaxy fan, this is encouraging to see. Very young prospects defeating a team of veterans away from home. Hopefully we can give them some minutes in the Open Cup next year. Good video Matt, keep them coming please.
I would like to see a video like this from one of your team mates in a different position explaining his thought process behind his touches. Keep up the great content and keep grafting Matt!
You're athletic and in great shape yet still display no technical skill that would take you to the next level. Back passes and passes to the center mid show no skill. The modern wingback is much more versatile on offense. Destined to these low tier teams until you try to change that, instead of just focusing on fitness
I agree with what I’ve seen in most these videos.. it’s skill and decision making is what holds him back... he barely got the ball back first thing he does is chuck the ball to the forward for a divided pass...
Ignacio MG-YT it’s depends because it’s such a big country and a diverse culture... Latin dominated areas especially California focuse on their touch and technique .. the “American” way is running athletics and just try hard lol... don’t put focuse on keeping the ball...
I LOVE THIS!!!!!!!!!!! Thanks, Matt, this helps so much, even though I'm not a right-back but being able to see the defensive side of a professional game is really good
Bro love your videos. Especially when you give us a behind the scene of how the foot ball world work. Keep it up and I'll be the first to comment on your next video.
Matt, with their first goal you mention picking and choosing your time to press or stay. You’ve done nothing wrong pressing him, you wasn’t tight enough which is fine but you don’t want him to turn and gain 10-15 yards running at you so you decided to shut him down. Right decisions so far, but as he receives the ball you’re no where near him and it’s clear he has the space to turn so really you should’ve been slowing down as he’s receiving the ball so you can set yourself to stand him up. Instead, you’re still running towards him as he’s turned which makes it very easy to run past you, but if you was to be set to jockey you can then dictate the play showing him to where you want him to go as opposed to where he wants to go. But, that’s only the first phase. Your left midfield was caught ball watching and not tracking the run putting himself in a position to effect the game and your centre back was beat too easily and dived in to block a cross that was delayed as well as a lack of organisation in the box. There’s a ton of mistakes and phases which have led to that goal and that’s my opinion on how you could’ve helped prevent that scenario from arising.
Dude I love these vids and you definitely shouldn’t hate them. They are fun to watch and it makes ur subs feel happy to see that you are improving. Honestly you bring a lot to your team and from all those clips it looks like you played to the best of your ability. Keep it up. Hope to see a goal from you 👀
6:50 try to force him out on your defensive third. Make him dribble down the line, he has no option but to cross the ball. If you force him down the line you have two people to support you--the last man and your right-winger. In that scenario, you can have your last man or winger double team him to win the ball back. You didn't dive in but your positioning was a bit off. "Read the play". Your two center mid's were not recuperated yet from the last play and had not dropped yet, therefore, forcing him outward would have been the better option. Here, you positioned yourself for him to dribble inward and he could've got a shot on goal or get a one-two, or dribble past you and do what happened in that play. Read the play. Hope this helps my man.
This is where coaching decisions influence a player's ability to adapt. It looks like you have very exploitable bursts of speed that would be perfect for overlapping. Your coach should use that and teach your right mid to communicate and lay back to let you run forward.
He’s good. Very quick with a good shot. It’ll be tough for him to get minutes for the Galaxy’s first team with so many high-profile studs up top like Zlatan and Pavon. But he’ll definitely get a chance with some team if he keeps producing at this level.
Too bad for me, Dropped a match analysis at exactly the same time as Matt! No views here I come, haha! Love your videos though Matt so I am definitely not complaining!
Min. 4:25. That's a clear yellow for you man. It wasn't even close. He had a clear advantage on you and you didn't haveany intention of going for the ball.
Hey Matt I got a small lump on my quad today after my game but I need to be ready for this next sundays game were in playoffs it feels sore not injured any ideas for quick recovery?
Look up so that way u can see other options as ur running so u can pass. If u are dribbling into a shooting area tho lean down and face the ball and just point as u know where the net is
Hey Matt, I'm curious as to how much higher the level of USL is vs D2 college. I'd love to play after graduating but i'm not sure if I could make it. I love these videos as I think they really help. Goodluck!

At 9:46 u could have done a solo goal if u just dodged the sliding tackle, the problem with your team is that u play too safe and create no chances without taking a risk
codgamer the stadium is meant for baseball. A lot of USL teams don’t receive enough money to have their own proper venues. So they have to use baseball stadiums or college stadiums sometimes.
Kind of weird seeing a team play with a traditional way style of play. They haven’t caught up with the bombing fullback style. I feel my cc team could give these guys a run for their money too
I notice that you like to bite a lot when defending, I actually have this problem as well when playing midfield. If you look at the top players compared to average players is that they defend a lot more patiently and wait to see if the person on the ball makes a mistake.
You guys play defensively but I think as a whole you guys could play more offensive 16 ,20 , 28 were wide open on most of the clips. I'm no pro or anywhere near your guys level but maybe you guys could improve by practicing long distance lob passing.
Is it just me or Da Costa is the only guy who can score?
yeah hes a great player
Shahar d that guys going to a top pro league next season for sure cause he just keeps scoring
pretty much the only real football player there
He’s Brazilan, watch his pitch love interview it’s actually really interesting
4:20 We used to say 'if the ball gets by, the man doesn't'.
you gotta learn how to dribble forward Matt. Take them on. you got the speed!
@@jjacob23_31 freedom of religion bro. Don’t force yours on others man.
He’s a LB it’ll be risky taking the defender on
The two centre backs really had a poor game, losing their men for two of the goals...
Ryan Holmes bro they always doing the same mistakes like wtf
Matt you are a gret example of the phrase "hard work pays off " my friend. Im coming back from an acl injury but I have several open try outs coming up at the end of the year. & watching your videos just motivates me man. Only thing that makes me happy is playing the beautiful sport.
*the beautiful game
That winger you were up against had wheels
2:53 number 7 has so much space it’s unbelievable, a driven 15/20 yard pass and your in the oppositions half attacking once again😌
Rewatching it back you can see him putting his hand up for the ball like 3 times 😂 so much space!!

Centerbacks are definitely the weak link of the team.
@Josue Vitale yeah but if u watch his other matches too, he's the only solid one in the team and his 2 centre backs are always out of position.
@Josue Vitale Agreed
Right. And the golie needs to warm the bench for a while
Props to you for posting this game analysis of one of your biggest ever mistakes. Truly authentic
I’ve never seen a baseball field turn into a soccer field

Great video Matt. Do you ever think about playing midfield? You are strong and fit and good with both feet
I reckon the refs are fan of the channel, 13:18 treatin you like royalty lol
David O'Reilly 😂
You need better teammates or non lazy ones, maybe a new coach who recognizes it as well
What a game this was, amazing to watch both teams
I just went to a Tulsa roughnecks vs Fresno game yesterday
Study the greats. Have been loving Matt’s journey. Helping mine at the same time.🏁💙TMC
At 3:18 you should've switched the play to the left back as he is in loads of space
6:50 try to force him out on your defensive third. Make him dribble down the line, he has no option but to cross the ball. 1:55 nice D. Couldn't ask for more from defense.
Shouldn’t have subbed you out 🤦🏻♂️
I’m a right back, just about to start preseason for my first year at college. Going to binge the shit out of this cos this is HELPFUL
Is it difficult to play on the infield of a baseball diamond? I think the pitcher's mound would be especially tough...

Very good player! 👍🏼
Since u play right-back can u make a video on how a right-back should operate? Like a step by step, strength...
Do they ever get the starting lineups right
Dope Kicks they do that on purpose to mess with the other team
2:56 you could make great quality offensive action if no 7 wouuld go from shadow and you could play him a ball
asa fullback this is super helpful
as a defender this break down was insanely helpful

A quick look to the midfield before you receive the should help.
Matt, how do you feel about the new owner ship for your team the Tulsa roughnecks.Does this affect you in either way or does every thing stay the same.
?^
Dude is good at fouling attackers and making it look like he was fouled.
David 😂quality!
the right back for la galaxy 2 is 17
Hopefully you can play for Fresno Fc some day
What are your team doing on the corridor-freekick against when you concede the 2-1 goal? Terreble set-up and defending, could easily have been avoided...
Never pressure a good pass if your first defender is not close and you have distance to you receiver.
Do usl clubs ever hold open tryouts ?
Great vid
I think your defensive midfield need to up his game. Btw don't give up. Better game next time Matt! 👊🏼
At 9:46 u could have done a solo goal if u just dodged the sliding tackle, the problem with your team is that u play too safe and create no chances without taking a risk
That winger had his weetabix
Hey Matt you still have the elite challange? And is it still possible to get accepted
What is the pitch like near the baseball area? Is it the just different colour or the grass is shorter?
codgamer the stadium is meant for baseball. A lot of USL teams don’t receive enough money to have their own proper venues. So they have to use baseball stadiums or college stadiums sometimes.
Can you do analysis for other players in different positions in your team

it amazes me the number of people in your comments section that think they're messi or something
Don’t judge the defenders too hard remember this is 2nd Divison
So which league ?
Eren Jaeger Usl
Great video! Could you do a video on game analysis for strikers maybe. i am a young player trying to learn runs and offball movement. thank you!
imchasebtw I don’t think Matt is in the position to do that bud
i’m saying like take pro game footage and analyze the runs and talk about them and stuff
imchasebtw I understand but he probably doesn’t know as much tactics to inform strikers
Oh ok
Man you plays are great, the team is holding you back for sure. Next level!
You need to play smarter and work on positioning and the attack no hate
I notice that you like to bite a lot when defending, I actually have this problem as well when playing midfield. If you look at the top players compared to average players is that they defend a lot more patiently and wait to see if the person on the ball makes a mistake.
