Being a center back and just defender in general is so tough mentally because we are the easiest to blame and the last ones to make a mistake before a goal is scored... glad that you pointed that out on the 2nd goal and that you’re so honest when analyzing film as well
It’s painful to watch your center mids not make any attempt to find space. You keep saying they’re “tightly marked” but they are just lazy. They just stand next to defenders and offer no support to you when you’re under pressure
Hey Matt! First off, I’d like to commend what you’re doing. Not easy for anyone to put their games up out there, objectively analyze and criticize yourself. I think it’s a great insight into professional soccer and what it takes. It looks a lot easier when these people in the comments watch it, but so much harder when you’re out there playing against a team that loves to press and give no breathing room. With that being said, it also goes to show how there’s a split second difference in decision making, and also the quality of the decision between the USL and the MLS or going further, the Bundesliga or The premier league. The top players are just composed and always making the right decisions quicker which is what separates the different level of pros. It’s a great video and you’re a good player. Good luck to you and FC Tulsa for this season, and thanks!
The issue is not that your center mids are 'tightly marked in the center' - it's that they literally aren't creating space for themselves. Very poor positional play and off the ball awareness. They really should be doing better than that. A great example is at about 6:55, one stands still the other runs up field? Umm... What? Really? That's brutal decision making
@@wethenorth2388 you are mostly correct. San Antonio miss check into space. Several teams do, but many don't, including Tulsa. Part of the problem is the coach's choice of players in the 8 and 10.
Decisions making is what sets US and Europe apart. Lots of technical and athletic players but not making the most of it. So many times the Center Mids could have drop in with mat create a 2v1out wide if the opponent center mid follows leaves space in the center. And from what Matt said USL players run 2 miles more than Premier league players but I don't see enough movement going on.
@@ultrapegasus123 I watched Phoenix vs San Diego. Really good game. San Diego did a great job of checking into space and denying space to Phoenix. They were totally gassed by the end, though.
These videos are so helpful, you don’t even realize it Matt. As a player wanting to get better, I love these. I may not be a fullback like you, but they still help a ton. Keep it up ❤️💪🏻
I also play right back, and i’m in no position to critique a USL player, but i’m gonna make a recommendation. Your first 2 touches on the ball, you cut the ball back and went in a circle the second time. If the press was a little tighter on you, you would’ve been in trouble. Maybe play with your left a little more? I don’t like showing people pressing me my back unless I have to, but that’s just my preference, maybe you do it differently. Nice video matt 🤩
Thanks for your match analysis. Quick question, are you instructed to stay back throughout the attack, allowing your left back freedom to push up and always having 3 at the back? Personally do you feel confident taking players on? There’s a lot of times that when the ball was travelling to you, that if you took a heavy touch down the line, then put yourself between the opposing players high press and the ball you would be able to beat their high press. The opposing player would either foul you, or allow you to go. This beats the press and now the positive team shape will have multiple holes. It’s takes communication from your winger, you would require him to stay higher up the pitch allowing his defender to stay with him. This would give you more room to operate. If you had done this early on in the match ,first 2/3 times within the first 20 minutes, the San Antonio player would have dropped off further and not press you. This would Allow you to have more time on the ball for the duration of the match. Or he would continue to get beat. You could also look at,while the ball is being switched to you, to make a run down the line and switching with your winger, freeing him up to turn and face the play. You could also make a run down the line then check back, with a small push off from your defender giving you 5-10m of space to work with. Remember the further back you start off on the pitch, the higher up the team can press. You can always stay higher up the pitch and leave your right back space for your CM to check and receive the ball. Again these are suggestions, however it all depends on what your coach is asking of you. If he wants you to stay back then do so. If not perhaps you could consider these options. Thanks for your great content.
For example: 17:08 you should have bombed down the pitch. The LB, LW And your LW Is all coming towards the ball. Leaving the space behind the LB exposed and open. You would outpace their players due to them going in the wrong direction. And you have decent pace as well. But this has to be instinct. You would have to notice this when your LCB, plays the ball to. Your RCB.
Ive watched Tulsa for 2 seasons now. I've watched almost every game and followed Matt and his progress for 3 seasons. I feel like Matt and the team has improved so much! They would be even better if they can lock it down in the final 15 to 20 mins of the game! Looks a bit fatigued and frantic near the end. But awesome progress!
50 Curtis jackson yes he is a good player specially tactically he is very good ! but he is not progressing , because he has been playing always in his convert zone , he need to go out of America and have a new challenge to progress.
As former player I love football and have been watching your videos for sometime now. I can see it wasn't your best game and I'm pretty sure you will take is as an improving opportunity. From my perspective though, you did well defending but you could have been a bit more offensive I think. As a winger, I always expect my full backs to support me as much as possible, to overlap me if possible, it makes my job easier. With that in mind, one quick tip: practice 1,2s with your centre mids going forward but only if you're not the last man and try to hold the ball a little bit longer down the line if you know it's safe to do so. Combine skills, SPEED, body strength and awareness when going forward. Maybe give it crack at training playing in the right wing. I believe this will help you improve your offensive skills. I watched Roberto Carlos playing against my mate once in Tokyo, oh my good, never seen anything like it. For me Roberto Carlos was performing both roles full back and winger at the same time. Then on the other side David Beckham, totally different style but very offensive as well but off the ball. As a full back you would have loved it. By the way, football is an ongoing learning process and you're doing great - keep up the good work. Does all this make sense, let me know what you think. Cheers
Hey Matt! As a professional footballer and certified nutritionist, I was wondering if you could make a video about finding the right diet for yourself. Obviously, not everybody is the same and I know that your diet doesn’t work for me. As I’m pushing to play at college and beyond I’m working to put on muscle. Initially, I was feeling great, but recently it has been difficult to at least maintain muscle as I play.
You should do at least one game analysis for the whole game, not just every touch you took, I feel it would be very beneficial for new soccer players knowing game tactics.
8:42 Not tryna hate just pointing out you put yourself in that same position 3-4 times still trying to pass it to your right winger instead of changing the play and passing it to the left back something that fullback often do. Everyone has bad games anyways thanks for your videos all the best dude!
No your wrong Matt. You don’t need to yell at Christian, it’s not his duty to drop and defend. It’s your job that has to be fixed with your center backs.
Actually your wrong, everybody has to come and defend. He can’t just stay up. He needs to drop back and help him out because his center backs are watching the middle which is the danger zone.
I think the conventional way to defend that big switch is to have the winger mark the wide man like he said in the video. staying tight with his other defenders is more important.
Idk but the team performances are not that great in every Game. The task for the coach is to get everyone into teir postions and give them tasks in every situation of the game. For example when you have the ball on the outside no one of the central mids come and helps. The easiest way to play out of the wing is forming triangles. Thats only one example which comes into my mind. Much to do for the coach i hope he gets it.
you've got to push up more and bomb up the channels more. Too many touches and turning back to goal and when there's space to be exploited that's why they kept pressing you so much
Wow I love these videos man this is the best channel and I play defender like u to hope u keep making more blogs #BecomeElite is the best Hope u comment or reply back 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
I’m only 4 minutes in and all I can say is honestly you lots of pressure I think you should’ve lobbed it into space for ur strikes many times even if it’s not the most ideal build up . I don’t think playing ur mids all the time was the greatest option
No offense but your team's defensive block and the whole tactical block is very very poor for the defense part your side and number 5 is strong for real also Gk he is doing wonderful work but the LB and left CB are not in shape for CMs there is a huge lake of vision and creativity
U should be more creative, also could’ve switched the ball a lot more often Bc if they high press the other side was open. I feel like your speed could’ve opened the game up more shifting pressure more to your side relieving mid
I was the same a few months ago and cause if covid I got one and it did me the world of good and I’ve come back motivated take a break and it could talk rn out really good
Again not to be rude but taking the ball down the line yourself provides the opponents to open up on your teammates causing them to be open for a pass try it out
Dude has your team ever heard of ball possession? You can't make 5 simple passes... They had you all shitting your pants! Your midfield must be constantly moving, looking for spaces and approach you so you can pass them the ball. What the hell were you expecting when the midfielders don't move?? Of course they'd be marked!!
I would like to see you take someone on 1v1 in the back I feel like it would be a game changer in your game. Good stuff just isn’t the best bro. Sorry it’s just the truth
It’s good you admit it bro. Self-reflection is key to be a great Football player.

It’s painful to watch your center mids not make any attempt to find space. You keep saying they’re “tightly marked” but they are just lazy. They just stand next to defenders and offer no support to you when you’re under pressure
exactly what I said, was the first thing I noticed

This actually happens to me all the time in a game. I also play fullback and I can never find my center miss being an option for me

good to see pros breaking down what they do and why, very beneficial for us young footballers

you need to do more overlap when you pass your winger so you can break their pressere and to help your team break the monster
great video so far
Are ur training programs an email or are they an e-book
Need to play more Direct sometimes when you have pressure coming at you
Any tips for solo heading drils?
Your center mids were tightly marked but at the same time I saw many times that they didnt come support you and limited you to few passing options

substitution you was a mistake ... you did job well
