This video is how I connected an APH Chameleon 20 braille display to a PC laptop. Note that this may not provide all the details for your particular hardware and software.
I made it for a student and family to follow process if needed. Hopefully if you are trying to do the same, this could help.
Here’s what the Chameleon User Guide says about connecting to a Windows or Mac computer via USB:
    1. Connect the Chameleon to a Windows or Mac computer with the USB-C cable.
    2. Select Connected devices (first item in the Terminal menu).
    3. Press Enter.
    4. Select USB connection.
    5. Press Enter.
    6. Wait for the connection to be established.
    30
If the connection is successful, the content of your host device will be shown on the braille display.
The Chameleon is now also available as an external keyboard for typing on the host device.
Note: The APH tech support folks are really helpful and quick to get on the line. Give them a call if needed.
Here’s what the NVDA User Guide says about connecting a braille display (note: in video, I got to the braille display dialog with NVDA+n Settings Preferences Braille. For me it had to be set to Automatic rather than the specific braille display):
    12.1.6. Select Braille Display (NVDA+control+a)
The Select Braille Display dialog, which can be opened by activating the Change... button in the Braille category of the NVDA settings dialog, allows you to select which Braille display NVDA should use for braille output. Once you have selected your braille display of choice, you can press Ok and NVDA will load the selected display. If there is an error loading the display driver, NVDA will notify you with a message, and continue using the previous display, if any.
    Braille Display
This combo box presents you with several options depending on what braille display drivers are available on your system. Move between these options with the arrow keys.
The automatic option will allow NVDA to search for many supported braille displays in the background. When this feature is enabled and you connect a supported display using USB or bluetooth, NVDA will automatically connect with this display.
No braille means that you are not using braille.
Please see the Supported Braille Displays section for more information about supported braille displays and which of these support automatic detection in the background.

Nonvisual Desktop Access (NVDA), is a free and fully featured screen reader. It works similar to JAWS (job access with speech).
