Most of the ice tube athletes grew up very close to an ice tube or a relative was an athlete before them. All modern ice tubes offer 2 to 4 different starting points so inexperienced athletes can start their career with a shorter slower run. · 2-men sled competitions exist nowadays as a "legacy event". It made sense 80-90 years ago when the courses were a lot flatter and 2 people together could go a lot faster than someone going solo. The FIL is trying to have 2-women sled competitions at the World Championships soon and also have them for the 2026 Olympic Games.

@@DanArnets1492 Sorry, but I don't feel comfortable sharing my full legal name. I luged for a Thuringian club till my mid teens. Königssee was the last chicane I've been on while active. I acted as a trainer for the young lads for 2 years afterwards. So I surely wasn't a name in the sport.
It's one of few sports where excellence can look "boring" but it's exciting either way - Seeing the difference between these crashes and the fastest runs makes you see how much you have to drive the sled to be quick

The FIL only considers you've finished a course if you're in contact with your sled, that includes if you're with your ass on the ice but still touching it with a foot or hand - It's a very important difference!
My son trained in the early 90s at Lake Placid before new location. He also did natabon ( spelt wrong) luge in U P Michigan. That was the first form of luge. No banked curves but wooden walls at each turn just like hockey. Each curve you had to adjust your body and sled. Can't explain the position but other lagers would try and break by putting there foot out and hitting sides but would damage ankle. Way more physical but slower speed but need more skills. My xwife and daughter and I were volunteering at track in -50 degree temps and we loved it

In this track (and some others too), you need MORE than just cross the finish line to get a valid time: you need to climb the slowdown uphill part entirely - Even if they had crossed the line, the run would've been declared as "incomplete" for that reason

you would think that after multiple people fail on the same part of the same track, that they would lessen there critique and show at least some thought about maybe the track being the mistake or at least showing concern that its clearly a very difficult part and needs top level skill to get past.

In the late 1990s, over the course of a single weekend, a total of THREE F1 World champions all crashed in the exact same corner of a racetrack. F1 still goes to that track, the corner is still there 25 years later and the wall they all hit is called The Wall of Champions.

This sport lookes like it's tons of fun, but also something that's super dangerous if things go really badly... then again, it's a sport where you hit speeds that rival that of motorsports, danger is to be expected. Anyway, is there a reason why these people retain their sledding-pose even when face down? I assume having your limbs tugged in is better to protect them from injury, but seeing people slide down the tube facedown without raising their arms to protect the head or face looks scary. But it's a baller sport ngl.
Can't say for sure, but I think you are correct. Keeping limbs in means you can't get caught on anything. I was told to do that if I feel in white water river rafting (different dangers, but the idea is the same).
What did they think to put 2 guys together ? One steers to the left, and the other to the right? One has the circuit plans and tells the driver about it like a rally ? Or they are just couples that can not stand to be separated ?🙂
Here's a bit of a history lesson: · Luge started as a sport in "natural tracks" (ice-covered paths you could drive a car on during the Summer). Back then, 2-person sled made sense because they'd push harder, have more inertia due to the extra weight and they'd have to be really synchronized to turn nicely. You can still see that side of the sport if you look for the name "naturbahn". · Once the more professional side of the sport moved to the current ice-covered concrete tubes, EVERYTHING was moved there... including 2-person events. Due to the much higher speeds 2-person sleds can achieve, the FIL (FIFA but for luge, you know) makes them start at a lower point in the track. The sled is a bit bigger than the standard one and you still need to be very synchronized with your partner but it's true that 2-person events makes more sense back in naturbahn. PS: Pairs are made of brothers, friends or just 2 people that were decent at going solo but noticed they could be great at doubles.
@@DanArnets1492 thanks for explaining some history, idk why but a few hours ago the thought suddenly popped in my head "how TF does one even 'get into' sled sports like luge and bobsleigh?" so then this lead me down a rabbit hole of curiosity and questions. I feel like it would be a lot easier to get into luge than bobsleigh, since there's la lot more accessible/"natural" tracks that people can use to luge recreationally. But bobsleigh, there's very few accessible/natural tracks in the world, and the equitment seems less accessible to. I still don't know exactly how one goes from "I want to do these sports" to actually doing the sport. For example, Do people bobsleigh recreationally, or do you have to sponsored to try out for professional teams to even begin bobsleigh?
@@skatmanscott In the US there are recruiting events where they invite track and field athletes that might be interested.. Most are like, lol, that looks nuts, or lol, that looks cold, or whatever. But a few might be interested and get into the system. It helps to live near a facility that has a track (Utah, Lake Placid, and that's about it) because no one makes money in the this sport so you have to keep your day job. So no one really gets into this recreationally. Most go straight into the Olympic training program from the start. And of course a lot of those quit before getting to the Olympics. It takes commitment since, as mentioned, no one really makes money. Other countries are different I am sure.
@@skatmanscott - The IBSF (bobsleigh+skeleton's "FIFA") has annual training camps in Igls/Innsbruck (I don't know the pricing). The 2nd option is to pay like €1000 (skeleton or monobob) or €1500 (2-man bob) to get trained in St. Moritz for a week and you can also do it for fun, it's not reserved to young athletic people. Bobsleigh's problem is how expensive it is. A good sled is like €30k on the used market and some sleds used in competition can't even be bought.
@@knutthompson7879 - I don't think anyone's making a dime outside of maybe the Germans (there are like 7-8 bobsleds in their national championships). Also, the Germans have been sponsored by companies such as Playboy and DHL over the years, that's usually indirect proof there is some money.
3:07 -ish... it's reassuring to know that they teach you how to crash a luge while staying safe (seriously!), because you could be seriously hurt if you don't know what to do during a wipeout. I remember when I played wheelchair basketball and at the first practice every season, our coaches taught us how to fall out of our wheelchairs safely if we took a fall on the court.
The "lessons on crashing" regarding ice tube sports is more about "when to give up", when to just stop trying to go on - They also teach you what pose you should adopt if you've completely lost the sled AKA put yourself in a way so you don't gain speed

Mid 90s and my son was trying to get on development team in lake placid. While racing in I believe nynex event that included employees but not at start point for them. After going through the s bends just entering the first huge banked curve. He banged something and ended up in the air and swung the sled resetting himself and landed on sled on track and kept going. We were there and thought he would crash. It never bothered him except it was a slow time..
How does one even get into this sport? I lived in Colorado and NorCal mountains for awhile and never even heard of anyone doing it. Is this a popular winter sport in Europe?

It's not a "hobby sport", people don't do this for fun. Refrigerated ice tubes like this one are very expensive to run - What people do for fun is "natural luge", which is basically sledding down a snowy/icy road

That's where you're wrong, kiddo - This ice tube is actually proof that you don't need very high speeds to make an ice tube challenging. This ice tube is like 20-30kph slower on its faster parts than the one in Whistler (used for Vancouver 2010) or the one in Yanqing (used for Beijing 2022 as I'm typing this)

Here's how the design of ice tubes work: · Computer simulations and use of proven proportions and such · Certain phases of constructions might include controlled test runs · Once things are done, you have simulated competitions with several sleds · Then you get your first real IBSF/FIL ranked competition The 2 worst "beginnings" of ice tubes are probably the ones used for Vancouver 2010 and Pyeongchang 2018. In the one used for Vancouver 2010, around 12-15 months before the Olympic Games, they had a IBSF World Cup round and there was an extremely tricky right-left combination that caused many crashes to the point it was nicknamed "50/50" (an exaggeration). Section was rebuilt before the Olympic Games. Then in the one used for Pyeongchang 2018, during a IBSF World Cup round too again 12-15 months before the Olympic Games, they discovered there was a step-down near-jump because the builders (not the designers) miscalculated and didn't join 2 sections properly. This time it was worse and got solved only like 2-3 months before the Olympic Games.
It looks like in most cases an overcorrection on the second turn when they went into a chicane and didn't make the first turn early or forcefully enough.

@@JB91710 - I've been watching all 3 main ice tube sports (bobsleigh, skeleton and this) for a bit over 20 years - She's not an entertainer but everything she said in these cuts I made myself are entirely true. The wiggling section after the "kreisel" (360º downhill turn) is rather easy but it depends entirely on where you are as you enter it. You gotta use your body during the turn to put yourself in the sweet spot or you're gonna be upside down in a couple of seconds as 5% of the competitors of these Luge Worlds were.
All crashing at the chicane... is it a design flaw? Or, what would have been nice, was to see some go thru expertly... so we can get a sense of how to proceed- especially when I take my 4 year old down on his toboggan.
@@DanArnets1492 I get that, but they could use a longer tether. The rule could be automatic disqualification if you use the tether to help stay with the sled. My vision was for this to be used to stop the runaway sleds. Basically, once a sled gets over 3 feet away from its pilots, its automatic disqualification, and the tether will just keep the sled from going to the end, or flying off track.
I believe that energy transfer would make tethered sled slam back to the human, possibly injuring him gravely. This isn't a sport of chance, very serious minds shape it to be what it is for a reason.
@@just_dom144 the sled can already do that depending upon how the wreck happens. How often do the riders wreck, and fall infront of the sled? I have seen a decent amount of bobsleding in my life, and rarely do I see riders fall infront of the sled. The sled is not going to hit them. I've never seen riders slide faster than the sled. It's just not gonna happen. So, now that we got that out of the way, why isn't it a good idea? Btw, Im only talking about the small sleds. The big sleds would probably pull thrown riders all the way to the end. They could have some sort of break away tether attached, and when riders fall or wreck, it could deploy the brakes once the tether breaks away. Basically a kill switch.
It's THE most challenging part of the track, it requires for you to be correctly positioned beforehand (too much to the left or the right will make it impossible) and then steer (move your body weight) your way around efficiently - Only like 5% of participants crashed but it's definitely a challenge

It's the same as a zamboni on an ice rink. Easy to fill in and smooth out ice if you have the equipment.

There are "tips and tricks" like in most sports but, like with other fast sports, there are so many possible scenarios that you can't prepare for all
When this all happens in the same exact spot, is there any acceptance of it being the fault of the track instead of the rider?
In the late 1990s, over the course of a single weekend, a total of THREE F1 World champions all crashed in the exact same corner of a racetrack. F1 still goes to that track, the corner is still there 25 years later and the wall they all hit is called The Wall of Champions.

This sport lookes like it's tons of fun, but also something that's super dangerous if things go really badly...
then again, it's a sport where you hit speeds that rival that of motorsports, danger is to be expected.
Anyway, is there a reason why these people retain their sledding-pose even when face down? I assume having your limbs tugged in is better to protect them from injury, but seeing people slide down the tube facedown without raising their arms to protect the head or face looks scary.

Can't say for sure, but I think you are correct. Keeping limbs in means you can't get caught on anything. I was told to do that if I feel in white water river rafting (different dangers, but the idea is the same).

Here's a bit of a history lesson:
· Luge started as a sport in "natural tracks" (ice-covered paths you could drive a car on during the Summer). Back then, 2-person sled made sense because they'd push harder, have more inertia due to the extra weight and they'd have to be really synchronized to turn nicely. You can still see that side of the sport if you look for the name "naturbahn".
· Once the more professional side of the sport moved to the current ice-covered concrete tubes, EVERYTHING was moved there... including 2-person events. Due to the much higher speeds 2-person sleds can achieve, the FIL (FIFA but for luge, you know) makes them start at a lower point in the track. The sled is a bit bigger than the standard one and you still need to be very synchronized with your partner but it's true that 2-person events makes more sense back in naturbahn.
PS: Pairs are made of brothers, friends or just 2 people that were decent at going solo but noticed they could be great at doubles.
@@DanArnets1492 thanks for explaining some history, idk why but a few hours ago the thought suddenly popped in my head "how TF does one even 'get into' sled sports like luge and bobsleigh?" so then this lead me down a rabbit hole of curiosity and questions.
I feel like it would be a lot easier to get into luge than bobsleigh, since there's la lot more accessible/"natural" tracks that people can use to luge recreationally. But bobsleigh, there's very few accessible/natural tracks in the world, and the equitment seems less accessible to.
I still don't know exactly how one goes from "I want to do these sports" to actually doing the sport. For example, Do people bobsleigh recreationally, or do you have to sponsored to try out for professional teams to even begin bobsleigh?
@@skatmanscott In the US there are recruiting events where they invite track and field athletes that might be interested.. Most are like, lol, that looks nuts, or lol, that looks cold, or whatever. But a few might be interested and get into the system. It helps to live near a facility that has a track (Utah, Lake Placid, and that's about it) because no one makes money in the this sport so you have to keep your day job. So no one really gets into this recreationally. Most go straight into the Olympic training program from the start. And of course a lot of those quit before getting to the Olympics. It takes commitment since, as mentioned, no one really makes money. Other countries are different I am sure.
@@skatmanscott - The IBSF (bobsleigh+skeleton's "FIFA") has annual training camps in Igls/Innsbruck (I don't know the pricing). The 2nd option is to pay like €1000 (skeleton or monobob) or €1500 (2-man bob) to get trained in St. Moritz for a week and you can also do it for fun, it's not reserved to young athletic people.
Bobsleigh's problem is how expensive it is. A good sled is like €30k on the used market and some sleds used in competition can't even be bought.
@@knutthompson7879 - I don't think anyone's making a dime outside of maybe the Germans (there are like 7-8 bobsleds in their national championships). Also, the Germans have been sponsored by companies such as Playboy and DHL over the years, that's usually indirect proof there is some money.

3:07 -ish... it's reassuring to know that they teach you how to crash a luge while staying safe (seriously!), because you could be seriously hurt if you don't know what to do during a wipeout.
I remember when I played wheelchair basketball and at the first practice every season, our coaches taught us how to fall out of our wheelchairs safely if we took a fall on the court.
The "lessons on crashing" regarding ice tube sports is more about "when to give up", when to just stop trying to go on - They also teach you what pose you should adopt if you've completely lost the sled AKA put yourself in a way so you don't gain speed

Nah, accidents usually mean there's a place where the margin of error is not too wide, you can actually modify your trajectory quite a bit using your bodyweight - Only less than 5% of the competitors of the 2021 World Championships failed to finish all of their runs

Mid 90s and my son was trying to get on development team in lake placid. While racing in I believe nynex event that included employees but not at start point for them. After going through the s bends just entering the first huge banked curve. He banged something and ended up in the air and swung the sled resetting himself and landed on sled on track and kept going. We were there and thought he would crash. It never bothered him except it was a slow time..
How does one even get into this sport? I lived in Colorado and NorCal mountains for awhile and never even heard of anyone doing it. Is this a popular winter sport in Europe?

It's not a "hobby sport", people don't do this for fun. Refrigerated ice tubes like this one are very expensive to run - What people do for fun is "natural luge", which is basically sledding down a snowy/icy road
@@popeofdope6468 - Finland is not a good example of an all-winter country, you guys almost don't have hills at all! Finland knows about flat (XC skiing, biathlon, etc), small-hill (ski jumping) and stadium (curling, ice hockey, etc) winter sports.
Normally the best lugers come from either Germany, Italy or Austria. It's very rare for an American to medal in luge.

That's where you're wrong, kiddo - This ice tube is actually proof that you don't need very high speeds to make an ice tube challenging. This ice tube is like 20-30kph slower on its faster parts than the one in Whistler (used for Vancouver 2010) or the one in Yanqing (used for Beijing 2022 as I'm typing this)

Not really... Here's how the design of ice tubes work:
· Computer simulations and use of proven proportions and such
· Certain phases of constructions might include controlled test runs
· Once things are done, you have simulated competitions with several sleds
· Then you get your first real IBSF/FIL ranked competition
The 2 worst "beginnings" of ice tubes are probably the ones used for Vancouver 2010 and Pyeongchang 2018. In the one used for Vancouver 2010, around 12-15 months before the Olympic Games, they had a IBSF World Cup round and there was an extremely tricky right-left combination that caused many crashes to the point it was nicknamed "50/50" (an exaggeration). Section was rebuilt before the Olympic Games. Then in the one used for Pyeongchang 2018, during a IBSF World Cup round too again 12-15 months before the Olympic Games, they discovered there was a step-down near-jump because the builders (not the designers) miscalculated and didn't join 2 sections properly. This time it was worse and got solved only like 2-3 months before the Olympic Games.

@@JB91710 - I've been watching all 3 main ice tube sports (bobsleigh, skeleton and this) for a bit over 20 years - She's not an entertainer but everything she said in these cuts I made myself are entirely true. The wiggling section after the "kreisel" (360º downhill turn) is rather easy but it depends entirely on where you are as you enter it. You gotta use your body during the turn to put yourself in the sweet spot or you're gonna be upside down in a couple of seconds as 5% of the competitors of these Luge Worlds were.
All crashing at the chicane... is it a design flaw? Or, what would have been nice, was to see some go thru expertly... so we can get a sense of how to proceed- especially when I take my 4 year old down on his toboggan.

Maybe some sort of tether can be used to keep the sled from sliding away during a crash.
It's part of the difficulty: you can only have a valid finish if you stay with your sled and reach the top of the slowdown hill on it
@@DanArnets1492 I get that, but they could use a longer tether. The rule could be automatic disqualification if you use the tether to help stay with the sled. My vision was for this to be used to stop the runaway sleds. Basically, once a sled gets over 3 feet away from its pilots, its automatic disqualification, and the tether will just keep the sled from going to the end, or flying off track.
I believe that energy transfer would make tethered sled slam back to the human, possibly injuring him gravely. This isn't a sport of chance, very serious minds shape it to be what it is for a reason.
A tether would be super dangerous if that sled were to slam into the individual or team, so naw.
@@just_dom144 the sled can already do that depending upon how the wreck happens. How often do the riders wreck, and fall infront of the sled? I have seen a decent amount of bobsleding in my life, and rarely do I see riders fall infront of the sled. The sled is not going to hit them. I've never seen riders slide faster than the sled. It's just not gonna happen. So, now that we got that out of the way, why isn't it a good idea? Btw, Im only talking about the small sleds. The big sleds would probably pull thrown riders all the way to the end. They could have some sort of break away tether attached, and when riders fall or wreck, it could deploy the brakes once the tether breaks away. Basically a kill switch.

It's THE most challenging part of the track, it requires for you to be correctly positioned beforehand (too much to the left or the right will make it impossible) and then steer (move your body weight) your way around efficiently - Only like 5% of participants crashed but it's definitely a challenge
