There used to be a lot of soapbox racing in the US. No one really does it anymore because kiddos have their iPhones & PS5s. Towns don't want to close down entire city blocks for race courses, etc. But mainly not for the same reason the UK has a better cycling scene, soapbox scene, etc... people in the US are lazy couch potatoes and would rather finish off a second bag of Ruffles watching telly than go outside and do something active.
I love how the Badaboom Beast driver decides to focus on waving to the crowd instead of actually steering and then mows one of his own team down who's running down the middle of the track.

@@Keepmelevel "British humor" is a term used to describe a very specific type of comedy. When people say "British humor", they're usually referring to things like Mitchell & Webb, Bill Bailey, Monty Python, etc. Soapbox derbys are held all over the world, and a visually amusing soapbox racer in no way equates to "British humor" just because the race is being held in England. There is nothing inherently "British" about the "humor" in the designs of these soapbox racers. It is an idiotic thought process that would lead one to conclude "funny looking soapbox car in an English soapbox race = British humor". BTW, there is no "humor" to extrapolate in the first place. Racers try to create striking, memorable, and amusing vehicles for soapbox races- the reaction to these designs would be the same regardless of where the race is held, from Dallas to London to Paris to fucking Budapest. This is so great! I have to wonder how much thought it put in to structural integrity. Using 10 speed bike wheels seems like an automatic no to me if there are jumps involved. Rookie and ducky only rhyme if you’re British😉👍🏻
It seems a lot of people think there’s some advantage to having different sized wheels…if you put them in the front it’s just gonna make your steering setup more responsive (likely too much) and if you put on the back wheels you basically just loose out on ground clearance that you could otherwise try and capitalize on.
