1998 US Open of Supercross
Found a poorly-made upload of this historic event on TH-cam so I decided to take out the commercials plus like 4 minutes of a TV movie that preceded it. Hope you like it!
WHY IS THE 1998 US OPEN of SUPERCROSS HISTORICAL?
For decades, the American dirtbike racing fan had been hearing about and even watching broadcasts of the European off-season supercross races except most of them would fall into being arenacross races in the USA due to the events happening in multi-purpose indoor arenas mostly used. Despite the AMA riders being used to much bigger stadiums, they won almost all of them except for rare exceptions like Frederick Bolley winning the 1995 Barcelona Supercross.
For this, Fox Racing, Jeremy McGrath's main sponsor, recruited the creator of the Paris-Bercy Supercross, Eric Peronnard, to recreate the European small-stadium magic but in US soil so that local fans could see MC triumph like they had seen on TV. After some scouting, Peronnard and Fox decided that the best place for such an event would be the most famous stadium in Las Vegas: the MGM Grand Arena that had seen the best boxing matches in the World and more would be filled with dirt, it even had a small tunnel section like the Palais Omnisports of Paris-Bercy!
The sucess of the event itself can be debated. While it went on for a full decade (it died during the US Housing Crisis) and some of the racing was rather nice, Fox Racing never managed to crown their golden boy. There were a total of SEVEN US Open of Supercross winners during its existence but MC never managed more than a 2nd place.

Once the International Skiing Federation (FIS) noticed how HUGE the entry lists for certain events were in both the World Championships and the Winter Olympic Games, they created "qualifier" events. In case of cross-country it's a short-distance time trial (5km for women, 10km for men) so members of not-so-traditional nations can compete for a spot in the actual competitive event. Whose the idiot that put the Shitcane in the track?
You're laughing. These people are sliding face-first across ice in a leotard and you're laughing.
😂😂
It’s hilarious
Ive slid face first down a glacier. More painful than having two simultaneous bone fractures. I assure you this is absolutely hilarious for so many reasons
ain’t nobody force em, they were aware of the potential consequences
What do you get when you put two men in a sled rocketing down an ice course at high speed?

Never underestimate the ice.
Imagine crashing standing up only to get taken out by the next racer then able to get up and getting taken out by the next racer

The track was not right, if everyone comes of at the same place, then it's the track 😮
Do they RPS for who gets to be bottom and who is on top for doubles?

I was there when Duhamel broke his leg… first one on top of him!!! Love Ya Duhamel!!!!!!
I don’t understand why these teams didn’t practice the pit stops to get ready for this race.
@@davidmann2988 - They practiced for sure BUT it was and still is such a one-off thingy that they don't put a crazy amount of effort
When this all happens in the same exact spot, is there any acceptance of it being the fault of the track instead of the rider?
In the late 1990s, over the course of a single weekend, a total of THREE F1 World champions all crashed in the exact same corner of a racetrack. F1 still goes to that track, the corner is still there 25 years later and the wall they all hit is called The Wall of Champions.
It looks like in most cases an overcorrection on the second turn when they went into a chicane and didn't make the first turn early or forcefully enough.
That one chicane is collecting bodies
I'd do the double luge if Alessia Crippa was on top😅
