      If anything natives are far worse at explaining things in their language. Natives are wonderfully competent at speaking and listening in their language but they are terrible at actually explaining it and analysing it unless they have received rigorous training in their language, as would a teacher.

    For Spanish speakers
    _Desculpe/a_ is like when we say *disculpa* (obviously)
    _Com licença_ is like when we say *con permiso* (literally the meaning haha)

    Hi Liz, you're brill! I try to visit Portugal every year and I have enough basics of the lingo to get by anywhere. However, I'm still a bit of a coward when it comes to having a proper dialogue with locals. I find your videos great to brush up on my pronunciation and especially to remind me of useful phrases and to learn new ones.

    Hi thank you for your great videos! I have been enjoying them. My wife and I joined the Portugal golden visa program this year. We are just waiting for our first residency card to be approved then we are officially on the program. For us to get citizenship we would have to stay on this program for 5 years and then we can apply. We would also then to pass the language test as u did. My question is that we would like to start learning Portuguese in the meantime, breaking the learning up over 5 years. How would u approach it?

    Liz, that's a helpful distinction between desculpe and com licença. Question: does"posso?" mean the same thing as "com licença"? If not, when should one use "posso?" instead?

    • @TalktheStreets
      @TalktheStreets  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I'm glad! "Posso" means "may I" or "can I", so you wouldn't use it instead of "com licença"

    Your videos are great. I feel stuck in limbo between not being a beginner and not being fluent, it’s hard to find a class here to accommodate that. Is there a significant difference between uns/umas and alguns/algumas or is it generally ok to use either?

    • @자시엘
      @자시엘 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Masculine plural
      Uns
      Alguns
      Feminine plural
      Umas
      Algumas
      They’re not interchangeable they’re adjectives
      alguns homens são poderosos : some men are powerful
      algumas mulheres são poderosas : some women are powerful
      apenas alguns homens são pessoas más : only a few men are bad people
      apenas algumas mulheres são pessoas más : only a few women are bad people
      Just gotta know when to use it.
      I’m very much beginner but since I speak Spanish it’s helps immensely so I do have that privilege.
      I hope I helped you somewhat
      It’s a bit difficult to translate Uns and Umas for me into English but it’s different from Alguns and Algumas.
      It’s a bit more specific.
      I’m gonna need someone to tag team here because I can’t explain in English
      uns cinco centímetros mais baixo : about five centimeters lower
      uma pessoa boba : a silly/dumb person

      @@자시엘 thank you. Yes I already know the masculine and feminine and singular/plurals so it was more when you should use one option and not the other.

    Honestly, I learned Brazilian Portuguese first, which made it easier to identify the vowels and get used to the language, and then in Portugal learned to understand the missing/dropped vowels and sort of mumbled European Portuguese.

    Hi Liz,
    Love your videos 😊.
    If I learn European portuguese & Italian language parallaly in the same time.Both I'm at bigginer level and use basically apps for the learning (memrize, drops for portuguese & duolingo, falou for Italian).
    Do you think it is ok to learn both at the same time? Will it be a mess?
    Please advice.Thanks.

    • @starveartist
      @starveartist ปีที่แล้ว

      Fluent Italian and English speaker here..and conversant in Portuguese. You could possibly get them a little confused if learning them at the same time, but honestly, if you are at that level where you are speaking and make some mistakes, Portuguese people seem to be very patient when you are trying, even with mistakes. Duolingo teaches Brazilian Portuguese, which I found helpful to get used to hearing all the vowels, so that I could guess the "missing" vowels that get sort of mumbled or lightly suggested in European Portuguese.

    • @lxportugal9343
      @lxportugal9343 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      European
      (Brazil is the only country that changes, just like USA is the only country that has differences)

    • @starveartist
      @starveartist ปีที่แล้ว

      Either one, but honestly the whole Portuguese-speaking world understands Brazilian Portuguese, because they export more culture, music, TV shows etc. Portuguese from Portugal is actually more mumbled and less clear to use in Lusophone countries, but the higher level differences in grammar etc don't really make much difference when just trying to get by in earlier levels...either one/anything is better than nothing. Duolingo etc teach Brazilian pronunciation, and in Angola, they pronounce the letters more than in European Portuguese, so it's actually clearer and easier to understand Angolans.
