I've been a fan of the Night beyond the Tricornered window manga for a while and when I heard about how gege was inspired by it, a lot of things made sense, I love both works as separate works but also enjoy how the concepts are shared amongst the two mangas. Also I really hope this makes more people pick up the night beyond the tricorned window manga as the anime is not bad but does not do it justice as it tries to fit in information worth 50+ chapters in 12 episodes while the manga is just so much better.
I've heard that Gege was inspired by this manga but never knew to what degree. It's interesting because Hidden Inventory is still my favorite arc and Gojo and Geto is the most well-written relationship in JJK because Gege never put as much effort into developing any other relationship in the manga to this level. It doesn't mean that JJK is bad in later arcs but the balance between action, world-building and character/relationship development is titled to one side when I enjoy it to be more equal. It feels like the pacing and balance were better kept in the first half of the story, where Gege was more inspired, and a bit rushed closer to the end. It doesn't take away from the fact that Gege build-up a captivating story from little elements of another work.
Agreed. I wonder if it had to do with their health. Since they started to take more breaks towards the end. So they had to mash everything together by doing the Kenjaku and the Sukuna arc together. I know of one other manwha artist that had to do the same thing. Their health got so bad they want to finish the series within the next 8 chapters. But yeah. I also enjoyed the first half of JJK more.
Hi, I'm finding this video super late but I just wanted to say thank you for making this and helping get these comparisons out there and seen by more people. I was a big fan of TNBtTW before it even received it's anime adaptation and when jjk first came out, I noticed so many similarities (many of them covered in this video), but figured it was all just in my head. While I adored jjk from chapter 1, and I still do despite some people hating the ending (I am not one of them), I will admit that my dedication to it was limited strictly to reading it weekly and reading fanfic/looking at fanart. I didn't look into any interviews or outside sources about gege's inspirations. Finding out that he not only read TNBtTW but paid homage to it purposefully is like finding that piece to the puzzle that makes everything fit and make sense. I'm so happy that it wasn't all just me seeing similarities that weren't really there or reading into his portrayal of some characters and that these were all deliberate references on gege's part. It's so fascinating to see this overlap laid out in such a short, concise, and easily digestible video. Can't wait to show this to some of my friends as proof that I was on to something like, 6 years ago lol
This video is very well made. The night beyond the tricornered window and JJK are both my fav of all time, I’m happy to see the parallels between these two series.
I read this manga in just a couple of days because it was so good, I couldn't stop reading, really enjoyed it and besides I love supernatural stuff. Tomoko Yamashita is such a great writter, I'm so grateful Gege introduced me to such an amazing mangaka. I'm reading her manga Black-winged Love now. I'd like to add that Sakaki really parallels Nanami, he's very protective of Erika, just like Nanami is of Yuji, and I'd say The Professor parallels not only Toji, but cult leader Geto at times as well. Your analysis is great and I love you did this because I'm sure more people will be interested in reading TNBTTW 💖
I've been reading Sankaku since 2015 and was happy when Gege mentioned he likes this manga. Yamashita Tomoko draws great BL, though recently she’s more focused on Josei manga.
OKAY I HAVENT FINISHED WATCHING THE VIDEO YET, BUT THANK YOU FOR MAKING THIS VIDEO!!!! I started reading TNBTTCW bc of jjk and it instantly became my favorite bc of its similarities yet it’s very well written character development and story!!! And how it subverts the bl genre a bit! I love the manga so much!!! And the author’s other work, especially her most recent one, is so good, she’s amazing at writing character driven stories
Of course! I am glad a lot of people are taking the message I intended for the most part. I haven’t read the most recent one yet, but now I will! Thank you!
I remember seeing a comment that said how gege devoted hundreds of pages to the sukuna fight when his strength was always character writing. While i had already agreed, this video gave me a whole new appreciation for it. Awesome video man
coming a jjk fan who was always very interested in the intertextuality, the subtext of the manga/anime and the relationships between the characters. ive never seen someone cover these various subjects from such an open-minded and detailed perspective (since most jjk content creators that ive seen* tend to act like their opinions are law + wont listen to a opinion different from their own) especially coming from such an underrated channel. Without the yapping, this is a breath of fresh air, keep it up!
@@scumengel ah ok lol. Sorry if I sounded overly excited. Aside from the obvious clips mistakes, I’ve been waiting for criticism. I wasn’t being sarcastic or anything. Thank you tho.
Oh woah!!! I read tbtw and didn't catch any of this, honestly I don't remember the little details anymore and I've only started getting more interested in jjk recently. Goes to show that theres no limit to where inspiration can come from.
Great video! Im definitely going to start reading NBTW. I think gege has tried to make gojo and geto as explicitly as he can without having to put a label on it. Unfortunately a huge part of the fandom goes out of their way to deny direct influence and queer subtext even when its in their face. Another influence is YYH. Gege stated that JJK0 and geto are directly inspired and a homage to Shinobu sensui who has a very ambiguous relationship with itsuki. Someone pointed out similarities between itsuki and gojo abilities; Itsukis six immartial hands and spatial manipulation and gojos six eyes and space manipulation.
Thank you! That’s awesome. :D I really need to see YYH. I’ve watched the first 2 arcs I think. Haha I was looking it up and it is not just the aura, but the “I fell in love with a ticking time bomb” is crazy.
I wouldn't have even considered this manga if I hadn't seen this video, it's crazy I've seen a a few of the other recommendations associated with it though.
This is why i was not surprised when they mentioned domains and powers because I read and watched the night beyond the tricornered window. Love that manga though❤
@@naomithornhill2079 indeed. I definitely liked the manga more than the anime. But would recommend for people who would watching the anime if someone didn’t want to spend more than 2-3 days on it.

@@NoeActually ugh it makes me mad that there aren't more manga library like services. cause like 66 dollars minimum to read the series is very much not in budget and it definitely feels like stuff was left on the cutting room floor.
I don’t know why this was recommended to me, but I felt like I learned a lot more about a manga series that I had very mixed feelings about, and previously just purely regarded as an allegory for japanese work culture. I suppose it makes sense that one of the deepest emotional arcs was inspired by a BL series, since this particular part of the series felt more… feminine(?) in its execution? Anyway, I feel like I appreciate JJK a bit more, so thanks for making this video analysis.
It really did. Each character has a hint of softness. Very female “gazy”. The most masculine character I can think of is Toji and the principal although he even makes dolls.
what a fantastic video, I have seen some similarities with other yamashita's work in jjk, and even the domain expansion I see the source of inspiration from nbtw, yu yu hakusho and bleach!!!
I wish Gege stuck with curses just a little bit longer 😣 This is all well and good but this was early JJK. I am dissapointed the best part of JJK was "copied" from another well well established written story. Its like the good emotional connection was from this manga then rather Gege himself because once the Culling games begins which is Gege own imput is when the connections between characters starts to fall apart. I can see now the connection of the power system coming to play and the lore and how it drastically changes post Shibuya
True… I did enjoyed the first 236 chapters more. And when the focus shifted from character connections to a socio-political commentary on unchecked ambition, emphasizing the importance of understanding your "why" before pursuing goals and if its worth losing everything and hurting others to achieve it is not the answer. That The "nothing to lose" mentality can lead to questionable actions, as seen in the fights where characters strive to be the strongest. Even Broom girl's was like “I wanted a chance” even though we knew she had 0 chances. That means she wanted her shot at trying to be the strongest. Which again 🤨. Right now, most shonen readers are in their mid to late 20s, so the message has shifted quite a bit. JJK message was that you don’t need to be number one-it's important to enjoy the present, surround yourself with good people, and if things aren’t great, work on yourself for future change. Season 1 was to create that bond and give Yuji something to lose. Or like I read in a Japanese forum, they were simply setting up the story in season 1. Which tbh, I didn’t understand what they meant until now. (Sorry for the long message) lol.
TH-cam is wild, I just read that chapter of nanami slapping that curse off her shoulder about 3 days ago, I didn't remember if I saw it in the anime (started back when it first aired and just now started the manga), and here's a video going over why that scene seemed weird to me.
dude it doesnt feel like inspiration but rather jjk has used the exact same plot points as the other manga, its a shame that the other manga is way more underrated than jjk since jjk basically used their parts of the plot line, same panels and whatnot
That’s fair. A lot of people have that opinion. But I wouldn’t say the same plot points just because it used a couple of scenes which overall would amount to be less than 10% of the series. Most mangas are that. The only question is if YOU are aware of THEIR reference. Like bleach/zodiac knight Aot/ demon lord Dante Beserk/devilman One piece/ Vickie the Viking Monster/the fugitive In short tell me the manga and I’ll tell you the reference type of thing you know? 😊
@@NoeActually yeah I got your point, it makes sense, a lot of mangas are inspired by some other manga and jjk used only a few parts of it, I just felt dissappointed about the fact that the other manga is so underrated as compared to jjk (personally I find jjk to be a bit overrated) that's why my opinion came of that way but I get it now, thanks for making that clear
@@allison8250 it has devilman as the main inspiration. And some people believe that the feelings Ryu has for Akira can sometimes be a lot. But it is mostly possessiveness. However the majority of the devilmans I’ve read Akira choses Miki. So no bl, Just bl undertones.

@@NoeActually why am I not surprised? 😂 I saw a devilman x berserk fan art the other day and thought it was so fitting. I can definitely see (one-sided) BL undertones (but extremely obvious) for both animes
@@NoeActually shonen fans need to understand that a great work dives on characters relationships beyond gender roles, sexuality and binaries... that's why jjk is so good, and the ship of gojo x geto makes so much sense within the text, you don't need to read bl to find queer representation, and gege made a big step with jjk, from uraume, kenjaku, megumi, kirara, geto AND gojo etc
Really high quality content and complex ideas. I hope your channel gets the attention it deserves! +1 sub from me :) I’m just starting NBTW, so it’s really helpful to see some of the connections you’re making. I can’t get enough of gojo and geto, so I gotta seek it from other sources 😂
this video left me with a bit of bittersweet feeling i do love Jujutsu Kaisen and i have strong attachment to some of the characters. but it feels so distant in the last chapters.. as if characters emotions, relationships and deep connections became less important to the narrative. there are some emotional moments but there was so much more human relationships shown before, that made me love JJK in the first place. and now to know that major parts of it being heavily inspired by the NBTW makes me wonder if the manga could possibly be as good as it is without relying some of it on references. this is all just my thoughts right after watching this awesome essay. this surely gave me a new perspective and a food for thought! thank you 🤍
That’s valid. There was a lot happening at once. What started as a commentary on connection has shifted to a commentary on Japanese society, which is why over 90% of the curses are in Japan. I don’t live there so I don’t know exactly what it is. But I can’t imagine the collectivist culture with the obsession of success is healthy. On top of that making a commentary of how the powerful are the ones who can create or alter rules to benefit themselves, while simultaneously addressing the right way to work on oneself after doing something ‘irredeemable’ and seeking help from others (like Todo), so that you can eventually help others (like Megumi). There’s definitely a lot going on in Jujutsu Kaisen. And for a manga meant to be for kids… it is Evangelion levels of difficulty. And about the best parts being referenced, I felt the same way about Berserk for the longest time, especially since it was heavily inspired by the original Devilman, up until the point they rescue Griffith from the dungeon. I think it’s quite normal for mangakas to lean on the work they love on their first manga as training wheels. A lot of authors simply don’t disclose it. Like attack on titan is basically demon lord Dante, but focusing on war.
No wonder geto and gojo was written like that!!! I'm crying
Gege knew what they were doing.

I am not going to lie… I did the digging because I wanted to prove people wrong at a couple of years back. And then ended up loving it. 😂
This video is very well made. The night beyond the tricornered window and JJK are both my fav of all time, I’m happy to see the parallels between these two series.
Thank you so much! They are so well written.
Thank you! True. I hope more people read it too. Oh that’s so cool. I did not noticed the Prof and Geto one. Awesome! :D
I had no idea about this parallels, thank you for sharing!
Thank you for watching!
This video is so well detailed, so cool to see how their relationship reflects onto gojo and geto🙌
5:52 what was two characters getting together in one story, the other was a break up scene. Gege you sick bastard this is hilarious as shit
That “what if” went TOO FAR. 😒
I've been reading Sankaku since 2015 and was happy when Gege mentioned he likes this manga. Yamashita Tomoko draws great BL, though recently she’s more focused on Josei manga.
YOOO I LOVE THE NIGHT BEYOND THE TRICORNERED WINDOW
So good!
Thank you!
I think the best part of JJK is just how fucking cultured that REDACTED-killing bastard GeGe Akutami is.
Great video. So much better than the majority of jjk vids. Gj
Thank you!
I've heard that jjk was inspired by this series, but I had no idea how much! Great analysis, this was super interesting.
Thank you! I had fun
I remember seeing a comment that said how gege devoted hundreds of pages to the sukuna fight when his strength was always character writing. While i had already agreed, this video gave me a whole new appreciation for it. Awesome video man
I am so glad! :D
By the way, I love heaven’s official blessings. Such a good novel.
YESSSS FINALLY SOMEONE SPEAKING UP
coming a jjk fan who was always very interested in the intertextuality, the subtext of the manga/anime and the relationships between the characters. ive never seen someone cover these various subjects from such an open-minded and detailed perspective (since most jjk content creators that ive seen* tend to act like their opinions are law + wont listen to a opinion different from their own) especially coming from such an underrated channel. Without the yapping, this is a breath of fresh air, keep it up!
Thank you I appreciate it. Wait, did I yap? (Sorry this might be my first feedback). And I was 50/50 on that feeling.
Oh no no I meant my comment lmao similar to a TLDR, and ofc!!
@@scumengel ah ok lol. Sorry if I sounded overly excited. Aside from the obvious clips mistakes, I’ve been waiting for criticism. I wasn’t being sarcastic or anything. Thank you tho.
This video changed the way I view JJK and I love it
For the better, I hope.
Actually u were the 1st to lead me down a rabbit hole which im not in 2:38
You’re welcome. 😂
Oh woah!!! I read tbtw and didn't catch any of this, honestly I don't remember the little details anymore and I've only started getting more interested in jjk recently. Goes to show that theres no limit to where inspiration can come from.
RIGHT? I could go for a Helsing, shaman king or cowboy bebop inspired shonen.
Going to come back to watch this later after i have read beyond the tricornered widow
I wouldn't have even considered this manga if I hadn't seen this video, it's crazy I've seen a a few of the other recommendations associated with it though.
This is why i was not surprised when they mentioned domains and powers because I read and watched the night beyond the tricornered window. Love that manga though❤
Such a good plot element!
@@NoeActually Thanks, have you watched and liked the night beyond the tricornered window?
@@naomithornhill2079 indeed. I definitely liked the manga more than the anime. But would recommend for people who would watching the anime if someone didn’t want to spend more than 2-3 days on it.
@NoeActually True. I will admit the first 3-4 episodes are a bit rough, but it does get more interesting in the end
i just started the video and my mind is already blown, tricornered window is an anime i initially was really into, but ended up dropping three quarters of the way through, but once you brought it up in the first minute of the video it was like all the pieces of its influence on gojo+geto fell together, wth
Haha I am glad to hear that. The manga is way more enjoyable in my opinion.
@@NoeActually ugh it makes me mad that there aren't more manga library like services. cause like 66 dollars minimum to read the series is very much not in budget and it definitely feels like stuff was left on the cutting room floor.
I love your videos. I really enjoy your thoughtful analysis and I subscribed right away! Looking forward to more of your content :)
I appreciate it! Thank you :D
This video essay is so masterfully done! Thank you sm for this
Thank you so much. I appreciate it!
I read the title sa ''when an author falls out of love with a manga'' because that's what i feel happend with jjk
FINALLY SOMEONE NOTICE THIS!!!
damn the consistency is insane( nvm it’s a re upload )
I know.... I saw so many mistakes with the visuals that I was like Nooooo.
Thank you for this video, I also had no idea jjk was inspired by that manga owo
Of course!
what a fantastic video, I have seen some similarities with other yamashita's work in jjk, and even the domain expansion I see the source of inspiration from nbtw, yu yu hakusho and bleach!!!
Haha! The algorithm works in mysterious ways.
dude it doesnt feel like inspiration but rather jjk has used the exact same plot points as the other manga, its a shame that the other manga is way more underrated than jjk since jjk basically used their parts of the plot line, same panels and whatnot
That’s fair. A lot of people have that opinion. But I wouldn’t say the same plot points just because it used a couple of scenes which overall would amount to be less than 10% of the series. Most mangas are that. The only question is if YOU are aware of THEIR reference.
Like bleach/zodiac knight
Aot/ demon lord Dante
Beserk/devilman
One piece/ Vickie the Viking
Monster/the fugitive
In short tell me the manga and I’ll tell you the reference type of thing you know?
First Berserk and now JJK.
Beserk is a fun one!
Is Berserk also heavily influenced by a BL?
@@allison8250 it has devilman as the main inspiration. And some people believe that the feelings Ryu has for Akira can sometimes be a lot. But it is mostly possessiveness. However the majority of the devilmans I’ve read Akira choses Miki. So no bl, Just bl undertones.
@@allison8250 there was one time that Guts saw Griffith on a hill and the moment he saw him he was like I forgot what I was mad about. And he was just staring. I was like oh ok. Cool. You’ve spent years chasing after him leaving casca and all of the sudden he looked so pretty you “forgot” what you were mad about? Makes sense…
@@NoeActually why am I not surprised? 😂 I saw a devilman x berserk fan art the other day and thought it was so fitting. I can definitely see (one-sided) BL undertones (but extremely obvious) for both animes
Amazing
Thank you!
Bro forgot to mention the rent-a-girlfriend author (he fell too in love)
FINALLYYYY
My this video reach more JJK toxic fans 🙌
Latom 🧎🏼➡️
Gege needs to just write bl.
I disagree. I think shonen fans needed to know what is and isn’t bl and this was a great introduction.
+1 sub from me :)
I’m just starting NBTW, so it’s really helpful to see some of the connections you’re making. I can’t get enough of gojo and geto, so I gotta seek it from other sources 😂
Thank you!
And yes! My headcanon is that I filled Gojo’s backstory with Hiyakawa’s, the principal saving him and then meeting Geto at school.
this video left me with a bit of bittersweet feeling
i do love Jujutsu Kaisen and i have strong attachment to some of the characters. but it feels so distant in the last chapters.. as if characters emotions, relationships and deep connections became less important to the narrative.
there are some emotional moments but there was so much more human relationships shown before, that made me love JJK in the first place. and now to know that major parts of it being heavily inspired by the NBTW makes me wonder if the manga could possibly be as good as it is without relying some of it on references.
this is all just my thoughts right after watching this awesome essay. this surely gave me a new perspective and a food for thought! thank you 🤍
That’s valid.
