Woodturning - The Shrinking Wood

- In this week’s woodturning video, I was planning to turn a nice shallow bowl. Harry started off by selecting a piece of maple that had a few issues with it. First off there was about a 1 inch deep section of rotted wood that had to turn away. Then on the other side there were a few ring shakes that had to be removed. In the end I was left with a thin plate with some nice spalinting.
Lastly, I’ll finish of the piece with Odie’s Oil.
This is a great project for woodworkers of all skill levels, and I hope that this video will inspire you to create your own beautiful maple platter. Thanks for watching!

After you said it was getting thin, I was afraid it would become a funnel. It turned out really nice for all you had to go through.

Yeeeees, shrinking wood happens...So does wood that's not all it's cracked up to be, but is cracked much more! However, it does make for challenging and interesting turning!
Nice dish! The spalting is really attractive. I have a spalted cherry bowl, I'm working on. It has beautiful colours: Apricot, yellow, cream...It should be quite gorgeous, if the punky areas can be controlled!
...love the spalting...happy you could still pull out a win with this piece!...👍

Thanks! As they were hitting me they were getting a bit annoying so I did that overhand grip. Funny thing was I was watching a Richard Raffan video the other day and saw him doing it quite a bit too.

Spalting is beautiful but it can come at a price sometime.
Could you have vacuum stabilized the block before turning ?
I suppose I could have. I've got all the necessary equipment to do that kind of thing except for the stabilizing resin. That sort of thing just takes to much of my limited time at this current stage of life.
