Bad Timing Chain Noise/Sound/Symptoms 👉

  • This is a quick and simple way to isolate and diagnose a noisy timing chain. First, you have to take the serpentine belt off. Doing this you exclude the possibility of another engine accessory, pulley, alternator, water pump, or tensioner to make such rattling noise. At this stage, you have only the timing chain spinning once you start the engine. It becomes obvious where the rattling noise is coming from, the timing chain itself.

    Great advice to pull serpentine belt first, to eliminate all those added parts in one shot.

    Is there a way to determine if the noise is a rod knock or the timing chain? I took the belt off and I can still hear the rattling/knocking. How is the way confirming it’s the time chain?? Thank you for the video.

    • @montoya_garage

      Each time the piston changes direction, there is a noise from the metal hitting metal. This is often referred to as, a rod knock. It is usually very rhythmic and it increases with engine speed and intensifies, with engine load. As the engine spins inside, the timing belt or chain needs some guidance, especially as the engine revs climb. Engine rattling when accelerating can be a symptom of a problem with this timing chain. At this point(with the drive belt off) you can hear a rattling/ticking noise which is not strong enough to be related to a knocking rod sound, you are very likely to find a bad timing chain tensioner(as this is what causes the chain to be loose). My dear friend if you find this helpful please don't forget to like👍 the video and subscribe✌ to my channel. Thank you!

      The timing chaine is still spinning when the engine is idling, with the increase in the engine revs the noise gets louder!

    Have a 2013 VW CC 3.6 VR6 sounds started as a tick an now its a stronger tick almost as if its a knock. I recently got an oil change an it made the car louder. Car is knocking at idle but when i accelerate to between 1k -2k rpms knock is gone an tapping is still heard just a little. Oil pressure light comes on if i put it to floor but if im cruising car is fine with no lights on dash. Could you please help me out ? Not sure if motor is worth rebuilding or not

      My dear friend at this point is only your decision what to do with the engine. From my point of view definitely isn't worth spending crazy money to get the engine rebuilt! I can recommend a product (it won't do any magic as the harm was done to the engine but it will definitely make a difference in the noise). Let me know if this makes any changes to the issue.

      diferent octanes will have no impact over the chain, however misfiring can couse a shock but still it shouldn't cause a failure. Hope this helps, don't forget to like 👍& 👉 subscribe .Thank you for your support 👍!

      Hello my dear friend. As this is not a simple easy fix as many would think, my best advice to you is to take the car in for a diagnosis. At this point is very important to have an accurate diagnosis done by a technician. There are many ways of testing and diagnosing a defect but this process need to be carried out by a specialist! Depending on what is wrong with the timing parts you may want to fit a new timing kit as a pace of mind! hope this helps my friend. Don't forget to like 👍 & subscribe✌ to my channel. Does a worn out chain tensioner cause the oil light to come on??

    • @montoya_garage
      @montoya_garage  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      hello, my dear friend, it is doubtful for a worn-out tensioner to cause the oil light to kick on . You may want to check the oil level first, the oil spec. The oil pump could be blocked. This is often caused by oil contamination! Hope this helps you, don't forget to like 👍 & subscribe ✌ to my channel. I appreciate your support 👍.
