Exactly! This helped me explain exactly what I heard (example 2: knocking; rod knocking noise time 3:05) that my mechanic couldn't hear on her end. Until I sent this video. Thank you so much sir! 👍👍👍
My gosh. This is the only video that mentions the noise my 04 camry has (that i have watched). The exhaust has been spitting white smoke at every cold start up for a few years, now. The noise is exactly like example 1 of a loud engine. So, now i know where to check. Thank you so much!!
Maybe 4 months back I started noticing whenever I turned left the engine just sounded… off…. Then sometimes when idling it would have this low noise, but not all the time… turns out it was because my oil was low (found out my engine is burning oil) and it was actually knocking I was hearing. Still driving it 4 months later, now I’m just checking oil lvl every 3 weeks and filling as needed…. Which sucks…. These videos are so helpful. Didn’t realize that noise I was hearing was such a bad noise kind of surprised I didn’t blow the engine because I drove on apparently low oil for a couple weeks. I sincerely apologize to my engine. 😅
Well done video. I think one of the hardest to do things is to describe a sound to a mechanic. Especially for intermittent issues it definitely helps to provide better adjectives the mechanic can understand. Or for sound of mind to the driver an off sound might be normal

Thanks for the video. I have 2017 X5M 61k miles that sounds like rod knock, no lead up just appeared. This video with specific noise kinda help determine the source of the source of the noise. Got this knocking noise under the hood. Its there as I start the car. When pressing the accelerator. it get louder and faster. So its either a lifter/oil issue or an exhaust issue.

@@BudgetMechanicHawaii thanks for the reply. Nothing like any of those sounds. Figure it must be transmission. It's fine with overdrive off, one a 1:1 torque ratio, but with the overdrive on, where it should be a 1:1.4(i think) ratio it drops to something like 1:0.8, so the engine is doing extra work with less result resulting in a racing wrrrr, wrrr, wrrr sound, untill it gets up to 4th then it cruises.

I think my car has a pre ignition situation. My car is getting that kind of sound in the example one of the pre ignition section. It's coming occasionally, sometimes like accelerating in 3rd or 4th gears up to like 2000rpm while the car running slowly around 40 - 50 kmph, then it goes away. Can this be the issue ? If the engine knocks due to low octane fuel, will it generate any diagnostic trouble codes (DTC) in the engine report? If so, what would the code be related to engine knocking?"
If there is no noise on Idling, but when the car starts to move it develops knocking sound, which gets maximum around 45 mph, can it still be engine noise, or it is more likely the suspension? Thank you for the informative film.
Engine noise from even just a bad oil situation can be hidden while idling but noisy when moving. You'll want to start first with of course the oil if you haven't already, then check the spark plugs or just replace them if it's been a long time since that's been done. Check the timing, fuel filter, fuel injectors, etc. These things are supposed to be serviced/replaced regularly so if any of those things have been skipped over in the years the car has been around then it could be the exact cause of the issue. Refer to your car's owner's manual and see the various parts that say "replace" on a certain schedule, and if they haven't been replaced in that time frame then that's where I'd start first. Even if they aren't the real reason your engine is knocking, it's something you should be doing anyways so it doesn't hurt it only helps to get that maintenance done
@@brianjones9780 Thank you. I started to change oil myself like 2 years ago, and when I 1st replaced in Chevy (2003 Chevrolet Cavalier) I noticed that the Oil Filter was extremely dirty, so I think many times in shops it just has not been changed (the filter there is a bit more complicated than in other cars we have, it has a vertical position insted of usual horizontal). Anyway now it is always good oil and new filter, I replaced the spark plugs like 2 years ago along w/top gasket on the engine cover. Once the fuel injector went bad, they replaced it at dealer for $700, but the fuel filter has never been replaced (I know it should be, but I didn't get to the fuel system there, and it should be well cleaned. I did it on another car we have, and it improved the driving just dramatically). Transmission Fluid was never replaced (~101K), all that should be done. But still I think it might be suspension, since it sounds like smth rotates not quite correct when you just start driving, smth not quite right, and then at higher speeds that knocking comes. I replaced like 1 year ago practically everything on suspention, but not steering Rack anf Pinion of course. I suspect smth is not coordinated quite well there. You are correct I should exclude all those small things 1st. Thank you again. Yes, and to check timing is above my current abilities on car repairs.
@@olenaerhardt7725 an easy way to determine if it's the engine or something else like the suspension is to see if the knock sound matches the RPMs of the engine. If you're switching gears on the road and the knock sound's periodicity doesn't slow down when shifting up, or speed up when shifting down, then the issue likely is not inside the engine itself or at least not in the cylinders/rods/camshaft/etc. So if it seems like knock sound stays constant even when switching gears then it could be something with the suspension or something else. Basically, does the knock sound speed up at higher RPMs or slow down at lower RPMs? Then it's probably in the engine Something I'd ABSOLUTELY be doing if I were you, since the fuel filter was never replaced, is I'd go buy a crapload of seafoam and pour in 2oz per gallon of gas into the fuel tank the next couple times I fill the tank. After going through enough for about two full tanks of gas I'd reduce it to 1oz per gallon for another full tank or so. Seafoam really works to clean dirty cylinders, there's plenty of TH-cam videos showing cylinders before/after a seafoam treatment, feel free to see for yourself how it works. you'll be flabbergasted at all the smoke you might see coming out the exhaust when you use it but that's all the gunk and carbon deposits getting removed from your engine. If it's still using the original fuel filter I bet you'll see a fair bit of smoke! I just bought a 94 geo metro last week and I'm doing that exact thing right now because it's running slightly uneven, and spark plugs are next on my list next paycheck, because the original owner had no idea what he was doing maintenance-wise on it, but working on cars is fun anyways. If seafoam doesn't fix yours, and new fuel filter has no effect, then we're getting into complicated territory like checking timing, fuel/air mix, and using an endoscope to look at the cylinders (they're only $20-30 and you just pull a spark plug out to put the scope in). It can get pretty involved fixing a knock sound but thankfully almost everything you can try is recommended or even essential maintenance anyways. Worse comes to worst you gotta do some actual work in the engine itself but from what I'm gathering it's likely just a really dirty cylinder. Also, since it's a 2004, I'd double-check everything is good with things like the O2 sensors and the car's electronic control modules. If there's something wrong with those then that could cause the car to default to a certain fuel/air mixture that causes engine knocking when that certain mixture doesn't match the current engine load, although it's unlikely in your case since there's usually also a bunch of obvious performance issues that happen when the control system/sensors are borked. Happened to a Cadillac I had once that ran and sounded like shit at low speeds but okay at higher speeds, and replacing the control module fixed that right up. I'm giving a lot of info but honestly if you do nothing else, a few cans of seafoam would be what I'd do next for sure because it's an easy try and it's good for old engines anyway, and also verify if the knock sound's frequency gets faster or slower with the engine RPM
@@brianjones9780 Thank you very much for the replay and detailed explanations. I know how to replace O2 sensors (both), I did it on another car we have (2001 Saturn SL2). I'll check if it was done on Chevy. But I forgot about one job I did on electronic control module. I replaced it for a new one (just bcs of milage and it was so easy work to do). But I didn't know how much thermal grease to put on the bottom, so I put it like butter on the sandwich. I continued the reasearch on that grease amount, and looked it should be very thin layer, but then someone wrote me that extra thermal grease won't hurt. The car was driving well. Now I think maybe I need to remove part of that grease. And I'll try that gear shifting (the car has automatic transmission, but I can shift in neutral and see). The frequency of knocking does increase w/speed unfortunately. I think poor oil change (not done properly, and I'm more that sure that in many cases I was just charged, but the oil was not changed) developed all that problem. Plus the dirty filter which they left many times in shops, which contaminated that new oil of unknown nature. Now we always add Seafoam and other similar additive at fuel change, but I'll check that way of 2 oz/gal (probably it is more concentrated). Thank you kindly again.
@@olenaerhardt7725 when you say frequency increases with speed, if it's not at all tied to the engine RPM then I think you're on the right track by looking at the rest of the car and not the engine. Best of luck to ya
This is the only video i found with the same excact noise my car is making finally. In the example 2 of knocking, how should i go about getting it fixed?
If that really is your sound, you may have some serious engine damage. I hope thats not the case. I would take it to a trustworthy mechanic to double check tho. If it’s as serious as a rod knock or crank bearing etc, it’s often not worth the cost of repair. Cheaper to buy a replacement low mileage engine.

Then it's probably in the engine
Something I'd ABSOLUTELY be doing if I were you, since the fuel filter was never replaced, is I'd go buy a crapload of seafoam and pour in 2oz per gallon of gas into the fuel tank the next couple times I fill the tank.

Very helpful video
Glad to hear that
