  • Bad Timing Chain Symptoms: 7 Failure Signs. Learn the crucial signs of a failing engine timing chain and how to prevent costly engine damage. In this video, I'll walk you through the most common bad timing chain symptoms, so you can catch the problem early and avoid expensive repairs.
But first, what exactly is a timing chain? In simple terms, it's a metal chain that synchronizes the rotation of the crankshaft and camshaft in your engine. This ensures that the valves open and close at precisely the right moments, allowing your engine to run smoothly and efficiently. Over time, however, the timing chain can stretch, wear out, or even break, leading to a range of engine problems.
Some of the most common symptoms of timing chain failure include:
    1. Engine misfires and poor performance
    2. Rattling noises from the engine
    3. Metal shavings in the oil
    4. Check engine light illumination
    5. Engine failing to start or stalling while driving
    6. Increased fuel consumption
    7. Low oil pressure problems
If you notice any of these signs, it's essential to have your vehicle inspected by a trusted mechanic as soon as possible. Ignoring a stretched timing chain or other symptoms of timing chain wear can lead to severe engine damage, which can be far more expensive to repair than addressing the issue early on.
Throughout the video, I'll provide more details on each of these bad timing chain symptoms, as well as tips on how to prevent timing chain failure in the first place. By understanding what to look out for and staying on top of your car's maintenance, you can keep your engine running strong and avoid costly breakdowns.
Don't let a failing timing chain catch you off guard. Watch this video to learn everything you need to know about identifying and dealing with timing chain problems. Your car (and your wallet) will thank you!

These chains are the reason i went back to timingbelt🙂 A car i had needed new timingchain after 120.000 km and sounded like a diesel.

Timing belt engines are simpler, last to 100k but mostly interface heads. So if you belt jumps or breaks it’s totally going to damage most of the valves. Time to swap engine-cheaper.

Actually your owner's manual, will recommend checking the chain and giudes around 50 to 75 thousand miles and replace as necessary. I think many recommend replacement at 120 thousand miles. My Honda recommended replacing the timing belt (not chain) every 75 thousand miles.
      Please don't be willfully ignorant.

I have a 92 caprice with 318,000 miles, doesn't use a drop of oil. I am the 3rd generation owner of it. There is some rattling going on in the front, my mechanic was saying it needs replaced. So I should probably gets this fixed asap. Thanks!

Given the age and mileage of your '92 Caprice, it's wise to address the rattling from the timing chain as your mechanic suggested. Timing chain issues can lead to more serious engine problems if not fixed promptly. Are you getting any camshaft codes on the OBD?
Besides the timing chain, other possible causes for a rattle in the front of your '92 Caprice could include loose or worn suspension components like ball joints or tie rod ends, deteriorated engine mounts, or issues with the exhaust system. It's also good to check for any loose parts or debris in the engine bay that could be causing the noise.

I'm not getting any codes, this is a 92, the only light that has ever came on for me and stays on is the ABS light, but it's been out for years, my Dad never got it fixed, but I will eventually when I have more money to spend on it. I heard it could be a pump issue for the ABS possibly.
