    Footwork is a big part of the kendo basics. One of the most common problems when training the kendo basics, is that people drag the left leg. Most of the time they can have a loud fumikomi but their footwork is slow and drags. In order to help you get rid of this habit I made a video that I hope makes the function of fumikiri (push with the back leg) more clear, and you can use these concept when doing your own kendo training so you can have better results.
    I hope you find this kendo basics video useful and please let me know if you have any suggestions.
    Thank you!

    What is your biggest challenge for your kendo footwork?

    Hello. As an assistant instructor, this notion is really helpful to me. It will help me develop new drills for beginners. It's never too early to insist on the importance of a swift left foot right? :) Anyway, thank you. I'm gonna binge watch every of your videos now :)

      @@Kendotips I bought the book you suggested in one of your videos. Kendo, Approaches for all Levels. It is filling in many gaps and explaining the mechanics of the legs movements.

      @@Kendotips The early section of Fumikiri and Fumikomi. He talks about the problems and a solution. The solution is to practice with Ayumi ashi. He suggests taking a step forward with your left foot while bringing the Shinai overhead. Then you push body forward and strike and move through with Okuri-ashi. Have you practiced like this? Do you video doing so or know of any? I just want to make sure I am doing it properly.

    Sensei added that to help bring the left leg forward faster, we need to engage the hip by making a bit of a quick twist pulling the left hip forward. Does that technique make sense to you?

    • @Kendotips
      @Kendotips  ปีที่แล้ว

      It is correct, many people don't keep their body straight forward and this helps, although as your sensei says this has to be combined not done alone this way you have the proper body direction and leg/hip engagement.

    In my opinion you are mixing up a bit two concepts when you include the dragging of the left leg into fumikiri. Fumikiri is, indeed, the push from the left leg, but the motion of that left leg into its proper position (lined up with the right heel more or less) is called hiki-tsuke. At least, that what I've read and always understood.

      Thank you for watching and I really appreciate the feedback. I think you are correct because the Two concepts are closely related I just didn’t want to make the video longer explaining another concept and I just tried to express the benefit of good fumikiri. I thought to to elaborate on that at another point when I talk about footwork in general. I hope it doesn’t confuse people let me know if you think it does and how it can be presented better. Thank you again!!

      I enjoyed the video. For myself, being a heavier kenshi means that I am already at a disadvantage. My fumikiri is really only at its best when I have a premovement, meaning that I have to gain some momentum. I have had to think about and monitor my weight displacement very closely as I level up. Maybe the next video could discuss that as well as pulling the left leg. The exercise you showed at the beginning of course looks bad to some, but to me it looked like they were simply trying to improve their muscle memory. I hope that the next video has some demonstrations so that those (like me) can learn more on not only how to improve, but how it should look when you correctly perform. Again, great info. Please keep it coming 👍
