Is it the 15-30Kg rubber band you are using in this video? ie. this is the one you recommend?
That katate kote by hara sensei at 1:50 was stunning. Such a nice hit.
Any advice for me and bf visiting japan how we can simply watch kendo practice?
Which cities are you planing to visit? Some places there are public practices that they have a viewing area and you can watch. If you are planing to pass by Osaka and maybe Kyoto I could find out specific schedules and see if I help you or even we can arrange a time and place and I could show you around (in Osaka) if you want you can message me through Instagram or join the Kendo tips Discord server: discord.gg/JKzT9KPa4d enjoy your trip to Japan!
@@Kendotips I have DMd you on IG. Thanks!
I agree on most things. 2 things i noticed in your demonstration though. While doing zanshin you lean back while moving back which most likely comes from stuff seen from high schoolers. Problem is its visible you have trouble keeping balance. I dont think its necessary to do it like this. It makes sense for japanese high schoolers because they are young, fit and 300% on intensity. They have the speed to support this movement. For you and most other people its totally fine to go back with a straight posture. Doesnt mean you cant lean back but it seems like an afterthought in your demo as you lean back while already moving for some time. I can understand it happening initially after striking. 2. I think your body could lean a bit more into your fumikomi. It helps with explosivness and power. Hyuga kajitani shows that alot. This kind of droppage of the center of gravity. Other than that i think you are doing fine and i also agree on the things said. 👍
I didn't know you could wash kote 😮
You can but ideally should be done without the palms. So some shops would offer this service when you send your kote to repair.
Incredible match!
Thank you 👍👍!!
Thank you my friend!

this is a very good vid. the #1 takeaway (in my opinion) is being lazy during jigeiko. too many people (myself included) work on shinsa keiko and tend to avoid hikiwaza because we know hikiwaza isn't going to help pass a grading.. and then of course, this means our hikiwaza is pretty weak because it's rarely practiced. And then we tend to avoid it even more in tournaments. There was a time many years ago when it seemed difficult in some places to have a hikiwaza get scored, especially hiki-dou, and lot of people avoided it for that reason. But I think the techniques are getting better now, and the shinpan are getting better (in the US).... it's a real opportunity to get a point, especially if you get stuck with somebody using jodan. One important aspect is to understand tsubazeriai as a real kamae... and in order to achieve yukodatotsu, you need to create an opening/opportunity and strike properly, no different from attacking with chudan. I think if we work on hikiwaza more, we might find that creating an opportunity might sometimes feel easier than trying to do it from the distance of normal chudan. It really doesn't make much sense to purposefully avoid hikiwaza (in tournaments) if we consider "one attack" to create two opportunities to strike: (1) the initial forward attack, and then (2) the tsubazeriai and backwards attack. Giving up tsubazeriai is wastefully giving away one opportunity. ... this is something I really need to be better about doing, too. thanks for the great vid!
Thank you for your support and the time you took to write this, I think you put it very well, Although Hiki Waza is not the main focus, is something for sure that can not be neglected. In regards of testing, I also agree, maybe is not a technique to do in testing but getting in the habit of doing nothing, can show the judges lack of attention or intention which could cause you to fail your shinsa. Thank you again for watching!!!!
This Video is what I have always been looking for, its so useful, Thank You Jose!!
Thank you for the support I’m glad this can be helpful!
Agree !
Hiki are very tricky techniques, but a great weapon in your arsenal if you can get good enough to score off of them. Thanks for this great video.
At the very least is good to have it so you can make distance and not get hit by it right? Thank you very much for the support.
Unless your target never fights back.
'focus on moving the tip of sword, not moving sword' - this is gold. It took me years to learn how to control the shinai with 'left side of the body' but i struggled to explain it to beginners. May I ask to steal this quote from you? I'll tell them the source.
@@MinhGiang1009 thank you of course feel free to steal! I’m just sharing what has helped me. Feel free to share the channel too 🤣
@@Kendotips absolutely! May i ask if you are using any chat channel? I read from comments that you are using Discord? Would love to have kendo related discussion with you.
@MinhGiang1009 of course here is the discord server discord.gg/bsfsPgFmEF. Make sure you read and react to the rules so you get full access to the server. Normally don’t PM people without asking first but for me is ok👌
I think originally this type of movement was used to not step on undesireable stuff on the battlefield.
Interestingly enough you also find this footwork in traditional Japanese plays. Maybe it will be good to research it from a cultural point of view.
This gives me an idea of what to practice for better understanding what the movement is supposed to feel like, thank you!
Thank you, I'm glad you find this helpful Let me know if you have any further questions.
I think I like movements that help me flow, kind of like you showed here. It kind of helps me override the sense of needing to over correct for my balance
Uchi-komi, kakari...
Oh now there’s someone with great taste on drills! 👍👍👍
I‘d say I enjoy the same drill you showed yourself doing in the video. If anything, that drill‘s one of the most enjoyable ones.
For sure!!! Also you can do it with partners of many levels since they don’t need much instruction to receive it correctly.
really nice first men, Sakuchi catch really well the opportunity when the opponent is recovering from pressure, good reminder for distance and readiness
It was amazing to see this tournament. The level was just superb, and as you say seeing how everyone was always so ready to act and the movement was a great experience.
Wow that katsugi men is so teramoto sensei
@@pandutresnalaga13 for sure!!!!
can confirm our sensei taught it like that , works better too.
Will it work if you use chokutou?
You move the shinai the same regardless of the style!
The video-quality is very nice 👍🏻
Thank you for the feedback I’m trying to make the content better and the presentation better as well.
I live in a place without many sparring partners (0, in fact). Is there a way I can keep working on seme without having a partner? Like drills that I can do at home with a mirror?
Thank you for watching. Regarding your comment. Do you have a sensei that can correct you and pass down information? Also when you say there’s no sparring partners that means there’s no one else doing kendo at all?
@Kendotips I have a sensei who is about a 3.5 hour drive away. I can make it to them for private practice once a month. I live in a small, very poor town. There isn't anyone here who does kendo or any other martial arts other than a bjj dojo.

What's the fun in practicing Kendo? There are no different fighting techniques, just hitting and screaming! Where's the fun in learning a new martial art? And how will I get fit with a sport that is all about hitting and screaming? I ask these questions because...
Thank you for this question l, I think is a great topic to discuss. I think maybe your comment didn’t come out completely though, but I’ll try answering the best I can to what I got. Kendo is not just Hitting and screaming, is a martial art that looks to discipline the human character through the application of the principles of the katana. I know it may look like just hitting randomly specially on specific drills like kakarigeiko, but we do have several fighting techniques, and we study not only the technique of the swords but also what we do to create an opening and controlling the opponent. That been said what I find fun may be different than what you find fun, but maybe this is a good topic for me to explore in a video. Let me know your thoughts and maybe send the rest of the message you tried to send! Thank you again for the question.
@@Kendotips Thank you very much for the answer, my comment is not complete I don't know why! What I want to say at the end of the comment is that my questions are not out of criticism but in order to know more about kendo
@@Kendotips The story is that I saw young men in sportswear that looked like Aikido, so I went straight to ask them where they trained because I really loved learning this sporting art, but circumstances did not allow me to do so. When I asked them, they told me that we train in Kendo!!!
@@Kendotips So I decided to try a sports session with them. The team was disciplined. I loved their respect and love for kendo, but I wanted to be convinced that it is really an art. So I went online and found you talking about kendo.
@@Kendotips i don t know to express well in english ....sorry for m'y Bad english 😬
I move the tip around with my right hand 👌🏻😁
take years to have tenouchi, still learning
Awesome video, I've been having trouble with this since I started kendo, always ending up slowing myself down with fumikomi instead of speeding myself up. With these tips, I think I finally understand. Will need a some more practice to really make this a habit, but at least I know what and how to work on. But I have a question: I still can't quite figure out how to use fumikomi to propell myself backwards for hikiwaza; trying to hit the ground directly under me the same way still seems to just drop the weight downwards and stall me. Got any tips for that too?
Thank you for your comment, I’m sorry I didn’t reply earlier. I am working on a video on Hiki waza, but if you want you can join the kendo tips discord server and message me there and maybe I can give you specific tips for what you are struggling with. discord.gg/yzbehG4RcH
I like to play with my tip with my right hand. Personally. The left is for the stranger experience.
I’d like to try your tip with both my hands.

2:24 That‘s a really good point. Too much tension makes you stiff and slow. Small habit changes can make a difference. I tend to be to tensioned as well. Since I started to focus on holding the shinai „right“ (high tension in pinky and ring finger, middle finger with tension and no tension at the same time, index finger and thumb relaxed -> same on both hands and the distribution of tension NEVER changes) I got faster and it‘s easier to keep the center. Sounds kind of oximoronic that less tension lets you keep the center more easily, but it works. Anyway. Thank you for your really helpful videos.
100%, lately I've been told to not even put the tension on any of the fingers, of course without loosening the grip, and that has help me further push my self to be relaxed. Of course I can not recommend anyone to do it without sensei advise because it can develop some bad habits.
@@KendotipsYes, that‘s something for more experienced kendoka like you and nothing someone less experienced should adapt without sensei‘s advice.
I always love these videos. Thank you so much for making them. Videos on relaxing the upper body but what to keep tense in the lower body! Please and thank you.
That's a good Idea, I will work on it. And thank you for your support!!!
🔥Great Tip's!! Thank you Sensei👍👍!!
