The existence of a multi-billion dollar market sector based solely on make-up products for women clearly demonstrates that women don't want to look ugly.

im not sure that ive seen anyone say that the character in intergalactic is good looking. But im not sure that anyone with a sound mind would demand the character be attractive, its not a waifu or gatcha game
@nicr1159 Objective sales numbers and consumer sentiment seems to be against you. 'Sound mind' because they want to see attractive characters? When human's are literally biologically wired to have our attention drawn to signs health/reproductive fitness? I'd argue you're not of sound mind if you prefer ugly characters to attractive ones.
@nicr1159 for as long video game existed, female characters tends to be drawn/modeled as pretty/above average attractive and feminine in a way. I don't remember these whole uglification and masculiniazation of female character even happened before 2014 (2015-2016 imo was when this trend started to gain traction). The first game that i played where i think most of the female cast was not quite as attractive as it before, was Dragon Age Inquisition (2014) but even then most of the women in that game still has a lot of feminity in their character (except red jenny...she is the only one that i feels badly designed and stand as some sort of proto-veilguard character). Why do people keep championing feminism when they keep gradually erasing Feminine feature and feminine attitude in female character?
@nicr1159 I demand characters in video games be attractive or I'm not buying. Waifu or not. No one wants to play an ugly character, ever. (Unless it's an already known character like Gollum) I find it funny that you think the modern devs wouldn't touch waifu or gotcha game characters. They're already trying to change the skin tones of them, you think they're going to stop there?
its really insulting to me as a woman when media tries to portray a "strong woman" as just a woman acting like a man. instead of focusing on how real women in history have been strong, not by just acting like a man, but by being a strong feminine. being confident, caring, a good leader, just and fair. i mean just look at the statue of liberty. its of a woman for a reason. my childhood hero was Amelia Earheart, she never once tried to act as a man or tried to be "one of the guys" she didnt need to for her to live her dreams. im just sick of the shallow portrayals in movies and games.
@SoshulCom yes, me too. I've met plenty of women who, at first sight, were kind of meh.. but when you get to know them, it's like, hmm.. nice. Something tells me this character won't be like them.

@@M98747 That's what these developers think as well. They want to reeducate men and redefine beauty standards by force. It’s as if they're saying, "We know what's best for you, what you should find attractive, and who you should want to be with." It sounds a bit harsh, but I think this is about pandering to women’s insecurities. Somehow the progressive consistently keeps on confusing empowerment with victimization. It’s patronizing, it’s toxic, it’s bad, it doesn’t help anyone, it's harmful.
Also, to be honest, my preference for video game main protagonists is completely unrelated to real-life standards, and I believe/hope that's true for most people.

To me, this comment feels like complaining a game has multiple environments. Games can have creative looks. If you don't like it, that's fine. However, it's sad that looks of a character make you abandon a game. If I did that, I would never play some really good games.

Ok, ok, with all due respect, Sifu is basically that, but minus the sci-fi. And, that game is pretty popular. Although I do wonder how many people actually picked the female character, though. I did, and I said what the fuck out loud, and I went back to the start and created a male character. There is also a fun fact where it's not that unpopular for players to mod the game so that the female character is replaced with Tifa. This game is an interesting case people should look at.

Putting ugly, banal characters in a medium that's close to art doesn't help. It's even shameful when strong women are so masculinized. Don't they have the right to be feminine?

You can masculinise my womens,, as long as they stay feminine in their character and don't try to make them something unique. An example is comparing Karlach and Laezel. One is much more manly in looks (Karlach is jacked) but has the some of the most princess like views in life. The other (Leazel) is much closer to a typical woman's body type but acts like a typical guy soldier.
I don’t think it’s necessarily about “attractive” as in sexual attractiveness, it’s just “attractive” as in, easy to the eye or enjoyable to look at. - no one wants to look at anything hard on the eyes for countless hours/days. It’s simple human behavior.
I think another good comparison is if you offer random people either a Vulpix or a Stunfisk, most of the time they're probably gonna choose the Vulpix.
@Martin-qb2mw I think there should always be an option especially in RPG games to customize your character, coz having both options just adds more playability and some people enjoy making ugly characters. Seems more like a fragile feminity is affecting games more then fragile masculinity 😅 male characters have basically stayed the same with a few exceptions as of recent years. Where as female characters are getting changed up every year. 😅
The only real issue with the new Witcher game is that they made Ceris' skull and jaw shape differently than her original incarnation. I understand they were trying to make her look older but they just made her look like it was a different person unless they were trying for that?
Thats what i point out, its one thing to make her look older, but her jaw is way wider than it should be, her chin is wide too because of it. Its very disappointing to see some people just ignore that entirely.
While the appearance of these characters certainly draws attention, I think a big part of the problem is that characters like this often have insufferable personalities too. Being critical of other peoples' "offensiveness" while being more offensive themselves. Being jerks to friends, enemies and strangers alike as the default. Being unconvincing/inconsistent about their motives. Acting like a child despite the responsibilities trusted to them. Their personalities could even be more significant than their appearance when it comes to pushing away the actual gaming audience. If a female character with a muscular appearance acted like a "friendly gym bro" or a "stoic demon slayer" rather than an "insufferable child", I don't think it would face such a strong rejection. Similarly, a conventionally attractive woman could face rejection if they acted like a jerk as the default. But these two traits often go hand-in-hand, which thankfully makes it easier to avoid this media in the first place. (And it certainly doesn't help that the writing often glorifies the "insufferable child" simply because they're the main protagonist. If they sufficiently got called out on it, it might not be so bad but that never happens, while instead they get to call out the other characters on even the slightest opposition. Just terrible writing)
When and why did it become the norm for people to not be allowed to have preferences. ESPECIALLY for recreational activities/the ways people choose how they want to spend their money? I personally think buying expensive jewelry or shoes is stupid. That doesn't mean I think other people shouldn't be allowed to do it. I personally don't like overly sexualized characters with overly revealing outfits, but doesn't mean I think others shouldn't be able to want it. People wanting to play unattractive characters in any game like this is a sub single digit percentage, man or woman. Pretending otherwise to be charitable while making an argument is counter-productive and feeds the delusion. People don’t want to be ugly in real life and any game that’s built around the player identifying AS the protagonist, as opposed to something like an RTS where you’re essentially a puppet master above the fray of gameplay, is going to succeed more often when that protagonist is attractive -or at the very least isn’t actively designed to be UNattractive. The Intergalactic protagonist shaves her head, not like Ripley in Alien 3, who did it out of necessity and expedience based on the story setting, but as a deliberate too cool for you style choice. Unfortunately for her, most people do not find bald women as attractive as women with full heads of hair. If they did, most women would shave their heads. That alone isn’t necessarily a deal breaker. However, she’s also heavily muscled and has massive man hands. Again, most people do not find massive, man-sized hands on heavily muscled women to be attractive. If they did, evolution would have selected for the majority of women to have man hands and looking around at real women, that clearly did not happen. Her bust size would be irrelevant if she otherwise came off as strong, but feminine, rather than weirdly masculine masquerading as strong feminine. All of this STILL could have been overcome if she wasn’t also shown to be an asshole girlboss with zero personality in the trailer. Had she shown she was intelligent, funny, endearing or just someone you’d enjoy interacting with in real life, that can overcome quite a lot of physical neutrals/ negatives. When your character design is predicated on deliberately making a certain group of your audience mad or turned-off, you’ve failed from the word go. The game’s overall anime inspired design aesthetic looks great, otherwise.
They claim that you're wrong yet they clearly don't even buy those types of games themselves, since those games end up failing pretty quickly due to nobody wanting to buy them
What if I told you the reason we want attractive characters in video games is the same reason we want cool looking weapons, cool looking vehicles, badass looking guns, etc etc. What if someone made a racing game where all the cars were ugly? Who would play that shit? Why is wanting things or people that look good suddenly wrong?
It's like wrestling. Wrestling was awesome when the guys were larger-than-life characters. Having average-sized wimps come out in jeans and wifebeaters, whining and complaining, destroyed the whole thing. We don't want our entertainment to be like us; only the self-hating losers need that validation.
the trailer gave me a 70s vibe, i think if they made the character like rouge from cyberpunk i think it would be a perfect fit but they character feels out of place
Today I've seen some podcast with scientist(which was a woman btw) that was talking about how hierarchies of women work and also how bullying is a tool to enforce it. Much of it was against sexier or attractive women. Now I feel like people in the gaming world want us to compel to the same kind of thinking and surrender to the bullying.
I'd say it's more covert with attractive women and overt with unattractive women. As an unattractive woman people will be more overt about their bullying and distaste of my existence, men and women. But for my attractive friends I see a lot more of the "frenemy" type deal, where average women wanna be their friends to look 'cool' but hate them on the inside because they're jealous. Also I prefer to be attractive in game too 😂
I am a gamer and a woman. I like good-looking sexy/cute/pretty characters. 😅 i dont even like movies that keep type castint ugly women as the main character with handsome men. Im just not programed to like ugly and fat. I respect people as humans but you cant force me to like their appearances. 😅
Saying those who disliked would never buy the game anyway is just stupid. I loved uncharted and if they went with a normal protagonist this game would have peek my interested (although we didn't see enough to know if there is anything to be excited for). But this main character... Hard pass. There is enough games out there to skip the political ones.
These people can scream and shout and debate all they want but it will not change the fact that us humans are attracted to pretty things. That's why a lot of famous actors and creators are all attractive. Attractiveness sells. It is what it is. It's in our nature. They're no denying that.
Oh people would absolutely care about Tomb Raider - When the OG came out it wasn't just about Lara - it had cutting edge visuals with dynamic camera system that was at the time revolutionary and one of the biggests selling points. The way it changed angles and framed the action depending on what's on the screen - there was nothing like it before. Same for the gameplay - the combination of gymnastics and climbing mechanics were unprecedented. If you wanted to play something similar you had no other game to play. And Lara back in the day was not really that pretty - ingame model was nice but very simple and looked a bit silly up close. The cinematic model was a bit more detailed but fapping material it was not. I don't know how forgettable are modern TR games but the OG still kicks ass.
Its the characters personality that is off-putting to me. The way she looks is just doubling down. She was arrogant and threatened to fire her cooler looking agent because she was being reasonable 😂
22:12 I'd argue it highlights the point even more, the fact that Asmon is ugly. Plenty of gamers are ugly. I don't know the exact numbers, but if you picture the "average gamer", I doubt many people picture a handsome model. So you could argue that many people want to play video games to escape their own reality. Personal problems, taxes, societal issues, politics, and, you guessed it, having to look good. So there is probably a large portion of people who when they play a game to escape, don't want to be reminded that being ugly is an issue. They wanna be hot, wield a giant sword, shoot some monsters, and have a blast. They don't want to stop and ponder the ethical dilemmas of killing a wild creature for food, nor do they want to discuss whether or not their character is conventionally attractive. They want the best aspects of a fictive world without having to deal with the bullshit. So when an ugly person complains that a character isn't "hot", it's not necessarily because they want to "jerk off" to them, but rather that it ruins the escapism that gaming provides them.
i don't mind the protagonist looking like Ripley from Alien 3, but she can't look like that and have a stupid annoying wannabe-spike-spiegel attitude, because it doesn't match up at all if you want to have a cool-cat, fashionable protag, you gotta do a bit more work in the design department outside of tossing a generic Akira reference onto her it's like having a character who looks like Kratos but has the personality of Nathan Drake. lmao
She isn't even remotely as cool as Ripley, who also had feminine sensibilities about her but had to be strong to face a dire situation. I hate this character's smug face.
To the girl compliment,... there was a short lived trend of asking girls what they think of Lizzo, they respond positively. They are then told they look like her , they react angrily with insults. Its fucking hysterical.

@nicr1159 why not make it customizable? why force people to play as an ugly character I don't get it
@nicr1159 Objective sales numbers and consumer sentiment seems to be against you.
(Unless it's an already known character like Gollum)
I find it funny that you think the modern devs wouldn't touch waifu or gotcha game characters.

@@M98747 That's what these developers think as well. They want to reeducate men and redefine beauty standards by force. It’s as if they're saying, "We know what's best for you, what you should find attractive, and who you should want to be with." Same! And why wouldn’t they let us make our own character? I can spend hours in character creator sometimes. Some games it makes sense you can’t change the main character, but I see no reason why this game won’t allow it.
Agreed! Freedom is needed, options and all. If not? Make good characters that fit to players tastes or one that fits the universe.
Ugh same let me choose. I play DnD all the time. I don’t always want to play a pretty character. Sometimes I do want to explore my more masculine side and be the tough woman. Let me choose.
@@MeiseptemberxI said the same thing in a previous video about this. Why can't they take some of that inflated budget and put it toward character creation via player? It could be the most basic gender/feature/hair choices and ppl would be much happier. 😅
Same. I feel far more connected to a character that actually looks like a feminine woman. It's as if these people think a woman can't be strong, heroic, independent or brave unless she looks and acts just like a man. Its like they see beauty and femininity as a weakness. Its quite a sexist way of thinking.
Many of these people also can't seem to tell the difference between being attractive and being sexualized. A female character being attractive is not the same as a female character being sexualized. Beautiful women exist and many don't dress provocatively. Calling feminine women with curves unrealistic is just a form of body shaming.

I did buy it on Epic, it's literally the only game I own on Epic Game Store. But I'm a Remedy-verse fan. I wasn't going to sit out on it. Most people aren't that deep into the Remedy-verse.
Here’s the thing. The Chuds would be just as “mad” if you made it an ugly fat dude as the lead protagonist. Sexism has nothing to do with it.

What podcast was this?
Al Bundy was right all along
Makes their arguments harder when they realize that Eve is based off of the scans of a real Korean Model.
So when an ugly person complains that a character isn't "hot", it's not necessarily because they want to "jerk off" to them, but rather that it ruins the escapism that gaming provides them.
i don't mind the protagonist looking like Ripley from Alien 3, but she can't look like that and have a stupid annoying wannabe-spike-spiegel attitude, because it doesn't match up at all
if you want to have a cool-cat, fashionable protag, you gotta do a bit more work in the design department outside of tossing a generic Akira reference onto her
it's like having a character who looks like Kratos but has the personality of Nathan Drake. lmao
She isn't even remotely as cool as Ripley, who also had feminine sensibilities about her but had to be strong to face a dire situation. I hate this character's smug face.
