Dude overwatch couldn't even win against itself. The only thing that kept it going all this time was that it simply didnt have any real competition up till now.

Rivals is just the first REAL competition Overwatch has had in the genre and just shows how much more they could have done over the years but just didnt
@KingMaler00 even something as simple as the replay viewer is lightyears ahead of what Blizzard has in OW, which mind you, will be a decade old come 2026.
Lets just pray they don't give in to the loud minority and implement role queues like Overwatch did after people whined, it was the beginning of the end for OW in making it toxic trash.
People keep saying how overwatch is gonna die now. Actually, rival’s entrance into the market is the best scenario for overwatch. It will push them to keep making better content otherwise they’ll lose their player base.
@@Squidaredumb I think Blizzard would sooner just let Overwatch die and fade rather than divert actual money resources into making the game better. It's already a skeleton crew keeping Overwatch 2 alive.
Shame they still won't listen to the remaining 2 interns screaming "we should focus on making our games good & rebuilding our brand" and just monetize the bejeezus out of their few remaining diehard fanboys instead ^^
The only people that will lose will be the people that just want to make great games and are infinitely more wise than their management. Massive walking cnts like Bobby Kotick won't really take the hit.
They still makes more money from Candy Crush than from D4 and Overwatch combined. So there will be some revenue and profit hit by POE2 and Rivals but it won't be as bad as people think.
@@JovencitaPera brother Bobby Kotick has been gone for a long time now, the problems will overwatch go so deep that even the small time devs are problems too. Do not fucking give them the benefit of pinning all responsibility on people like Bobby Kotick. TEAM 4 (OW dev team) is one of the worst dev teams of all time easily. They think they know better than their own playerbase. I legitimately wouldn’t hire a single person from the remaining team if I was head of my own studio or publisher.
I really thought people were just over hero shooters. Turns out they were all just waiting for a good one. Which does raise a question. I know Overwatch 2 sucks, but is Marvel Rivals so much better than every other competitor in this genre? My only interaction with hero shooters is Rule 34 so I have no idea.
Precisely. I say the same when people say Marvel fatigue in movies. People are not tired of Marvel movies series. See Gauradians III as proof, they are tried of bad Marvel movies and series. They started pushing them out like candy instead of baking them like a fine soufle.
@@yellowbeard1It is not. It’s just the new thing. OW2 doesn’t even suck, it’s the most polished hero shooter on the market. People just don’t like it because of MTX, the end of OWL, or because they’re bad.
@@yellowbeard1 Marvel Rivals is free to play, has lots of characters, and has been able to replicate the messy but fun novelty that was Overwatch’s launch, something that many other hero shooters haven’t been able to accomplish very well. It also has the advantage of being Marvel, a massive IP that can bring in tons of people who never played hero shooters before just to play Spider-Man. This game just has a lot going for it, but time will tell on whether it can continue to go toe to toe with OW.
Imagine being a Concord dev rn, being called Kirlkland Guardians of the Galaxy and having your game delisted within 2 weeks. Then Marvel themselves release a stylized, colourful, and saturated take on their characters in the same genre of game and pop off 💀

It’s JUST the fact that OW has gone to shit and this game is REALLY GOOD. Saying the marvel name is carrying it is PURE COPIUM.
I really hope Marvel Rivals focuses on fun, not ultra balanced competitive for the 1% of players where they take away every fun ability and water down every character.
Nah they absolutely need to focus on balance. Iron Fist is wildly OP af right now. He has a counter for EVERYTHING but very very few other characters are a direct counter to him, if any.

Same. I did try coming back to OW but after 30 mins I asked myself "how did I put up with this horrible balance, static metas, etc." Since there's no hero bans or anything like that, it's ALWAYS the SAME thing in high ranks outside of blue moon matches. Widow meta rn? You'll see her 100% of games outside specific maps in GM. I grew tired of that. Not just that, but they are genuinely LOST when it comes to balance. The latest patch notes had me laughing. The game is basically a skin simulator with an FPS attached. Everything about the game is carried by what OW1 laid out and they haven't done much at all since to even justify the existence of OW2 other than make A LOT of things significantly worse, lay off a lot of devs that made the game feel alive, lower cinematic budgets, give Kiriko and Mercy 100 skins (btw, did you know Kiriko got the most content this Avatar crossover? Crazy), give majority of mythics to women (finally it's 5 to 9 now due to Rein getting a mythic! ...), they keep focusing WAYYYY too hard on winrates, ults feel so UNIMPRESSIVE (unlike MR), etc. Especially the ULT thing, DPS ults are a joke in OW. And the 5v5, I never liked it, and MR proved to me once again that 6v6 is 10x better 😂
i uninstalled overwatch a month ago bc the community is unbearable and i knew there was a light at the end of the tunnel. rivals has been a wonderful experience
Been playing ow since launch, played and started from silver to (last played 3 weeks ago) masters 3 rn on dps. I dropped ow after 1 week of playing MR. Once you get the gist of the heroes and abilities, MR is so much more fun than seeing mauga
Did Ybarra forget that Blizzard was known for copying systems and implement em into their own games? Its litterally what made their games good, in the past
Blizzard used to be the Quentin Tarantino of game devs. Tarantino built his career on making mixtapes of filmic tropes and ideas, and Blizzard did the same with game mechanics.
the rocket science of ''Just make it good'' somehow still baffles these devs. we've had an ERA of flat stale bad UI, copypaste bad design and horrible decisions for years now, while if you go back to play old games, they have so much charm to them even before you press the start button, more and more modern games seem to start realising that presentation and vibe is also as important as the gameplay
I hate to say it man but Marvel Rivals’ biggest aspects are how it mimics other market games. It’s UI and hud is like a weird hybrid of Overwatch, Apex, etc. If you like the game, go ahead but nothing Marvel Rivals is doing is somehow “a break from the norm” Its UI and upfront presentation looks like any other mobile game/free to play shooter on the market
@@LateNightHalo I can believe that, I think we got to the point even seeing someone making anything even slightly above norm copy/paste slop makes it GOTY at this point it has gotten so bad. I think a lot of it comes from a mixture of studios getting so large they can't communicate with each other clearly and make updates promptly, lack of talent because good talent was either fired for cheaper help/AI or don't want to work out of fear of lack of job security, and politics making its way into the very game itself and being written in horribly..
Dr Strange portal is about 30 times better than symmetra portals. You can go in and out, you can see and shoot/heal through them, and of course make traps for enemy players. And they arent attached to the ground, so they are just infinitely more dynamic.
They arent supposed to be the same thing, strange portal has 15 times the cooldown. Strange portal is basically on par with an ultimate and arguably used like one. Sym TP doesnt have the cooldown of an ult and isnt supposed to be used like one.
As far as buying currency that has to be converted to another currency… this brings to mind Honkai Star Rail, which has an IDENTICAL setup- setting aside packs, direct currency purchases then have to be converted into Stellar Jades, which you can then use for gacha pulls. This leads me to think that, as a Chinese company like Hoyoverse, Netease may be doing this to avoid getting tripped up by some governmental regulation.
I think its more simple. There are things you can only buy with the currency you can buy for money like the battlepass. But the second currency is used to buy skins and you can earn it by playing. So its just to ensure people are still paying real money for some things and not just grinding everything. At least i think so.
I'm not sure what he means bc u can either earn units without paying through missions or u can pay real money for lattice to pay for skins or the battle pass and the prices he described are way more exaggerated with saying the skins r 35 dollars which just isn't true u can see that when he opens the store so alot of what he is saying is exaggerated or wrong
What kills me about that tweet is that Widowmaker is clearly inspired by Blackwidow she has a poison spider mine and her goggles look like spider eyes.
To be fair….black widow came out way b4 widow was even thought off so to be honest black widows the original and widows the remake and to top it off you can’t even one tap😭how is she a rip off she runs and has a totally different ult…name one time you saw widow run
Marvel Rivals is pretty much everything people wanted out of Overwatch 2 and even Overwatch 1. Add on the fact that it's filled with recognizable characters that thanks to the MCU most people are at least vaguely familiar with at least one.
Are you serious, the battle passes don't go away!? OMG I wanted something like that forever in a game!! It always bugged me how devs would spend so much time on a ton of customizations that will disappear and never be seen again. Having multiple battle passes is great, a player could progress through them at their own pace without the pressure of it being a limited time thing!
Beautiful characters, I can grind the purple coins on bots, obscure character picks made with love that’s instantly noticed by long time fans of these characters. Game is incredibly fun, no roll queue so we can play our favorite characters with no punishment, reporting system that works and tells you the results of any action. It’s the most consumer friendly f2p game I’ve ever seen and I have had a negative bias towards them for all my life. It’s not lightning in a bottle. They are just treating every aspect of this game with respect and care. That used to be the norm for the industry.
Acti-Blizz: *What are you talking about? Overwatch 2 and Diablo 4 are doing great!* Grinding Gear & NetEase looking at numbers: *Oh yeah-yeah, sure-sure*
So for overwatch to be doing well it should have the same player count as a marvel game that just released with enormous hype ? Overwatch has around 40k players daily just on steam, this is good numbers for a decade old game.
The double currency is normal. Paid currency can be affected by things like credit card refunds. This allows the game to put your balance into negative and block you from playing until you buy enough to put it back into positive.
Marvel Rivals has avoided a lot of the mistakes Overwatch made, so I hope their collabs (if there will be any) better than OW. OW's collabs were just crappy skins that looked like cheap cosplays, and I hope Rivals actually adds playable crossover characters or much better skins if they do collabs
Overwatch 2 currently has 40k players daily just on steam, before release of Marvels it was around 45K players. I don't see how a game that has 40k players daily even during the peak of Marvel Rivals is being killed off or was dead in the first place

I think Marvels Rivals did monetization quite well. I didn't find it confuse because all conversion is 1 to 1. There is 3 types of currency with different uses. No gacha, no gamble.
Yes but three different types and it takes some reading to understand which is which and that they even convert. Not hard but also not intuitive. Additionally I would say it is a little predatory when you consider this and how much they are asking for. Idk maybe I’m a holdout but it just seems, a bit much, for so little.
@@erwerewolf That is not what "predatory" means. Predatory microtransactions means the company is kinda forcing you to buy the cosmetic which has no visual value for a lot of money. On top of that it is a special edition that you can buy only 1 week and will never, ever see the light again. Some go even further to add in-game advantages with microtransactions, that is predatory. What has Marvel Rivals done? Just play, get a free Hela skin + two types of in-game currencies that you can save up to buy skins or the pass itself. Sure lil bro, SOOOO predatory, my wallet died today.
No. Monetization is really bad. You just don't get it. It's true what you say about the currencies, it is not very confusing, that part is fine. But there is just not enough stuff to buy. It should have launched with way more skins and cosmetics. A lot of those 20 mil + players want to pour money into it, but can't find anything to buy, myself included.
no gambling is nice, but it shouldn't be the standard. obfuscation by putting in game purchases behind currency conversion is scummy. Imo Fortnite still has a better system, but they have more money so it's not the fairest comparison.
@@N7senseiI'm glad they put a lot of time into the game instead of cosmetics like you're suggesting. because now we have a good game that will live for a long time equaling MUCH more skins for everyone.
Casual players have always vastly outnumbered hardcore sweats in any game. So when a game does _a really good job_ at being highly accessible and fun for casual players, it's naturally going to attract a bigger audience than any game that tries to sell a super-hardcore competitive experience. Overwatch used _be_ that kind of casual-friendly game, but then it lost it's way soon after the Overwatch League forced it's way in.
The problem is that casual gamers are flight risks, they will quickly game hop to the newest thing. Live service games need to turn game hoppers into long term players, which is fundamentally anti-casual.
One of the biggest reasons imo that it has been and has stayed successful is something you failed to mentioned...its not only f2p, but ALL the heroes are free also and will always be free in the future. This is not common for f2p games to do.
Agreed, they did a lot of good things for free player. You can earn around 300 Units (currency for buying skin) per months and cheaper skin cost 600 while Unique skin is 1600-2200. So free player will get free skin every 2 months
@Hellbughunter I swear I heard that only the first presented heroes would be free, with the rest (any hero who'll be added by a future update) being paid
I think one point that the quote misses is also that I -used to- have 15 Pharah skins. Then, Blizzard took them away and gave me some currency to repurchase some of them. Then, they also made the core principles of the game less enjoyable, and even decreased the quality of the base hero designs. I had sunk cost / investment with Overwatch some years ago. They wiped that slate clean in 2023. I haven't touched the game since, while still wanting a hero shooter. Rivals fit the niche perfectly.
@turftrash3971 When I launched OW 2 all my skins, icons, sprays etc. were gone. I kept my coins and got some new currency I could use. Not sure if that was some temporary bug or not, because I haven't touched the game since.
@@AwesomeRash big oof. Yeah you're supposed to keep everything. I know i did, i also got 7k comp credits for no reason on top of that. Definitely shotty work by blizzard
That was a bug that was patched, I believe they put out that if the issue was still going on to open up a ticket, It happened to me. I almost quit over it as I had about 1250 hours of skins and cosmetics built up. I had all of the cosmetics for several heroes. When they fixed it, I came back. Haven't launched since Rivals came out though.
13:50 Important note here, Lattice can _also_ be converted 1-to-1 with the Battlepass currency, meaning you can choose to spend it either on cosmetics directly or on boosting your progression through the Battlepass.
@siren_atlantica Ehhh. I think it's not unreasonable to at least spend some of the lattice you get from the battlepass itself if you _really_ want one of the skins and are too impatient to wait for more daily challenges to come in.
Its such a no brainer, with non-expiring battlepasses.... "oh, ill be away for an extended time - i wont be able to do it, so i wont buy it" vs "oh, ill be gone for a while and cant get the battle pass when im back .... BUT... i can finish it then, so ill buy it now and play it later". Finally someone on battlepasses who actually uses his or her brain.
Rivals just proves that, the problem with Hero shooters, is not that they are Hero shooters, it’s that most of the companies that make them don’t actually know how to make a good product. Rivals does.
MR = Fun, Passion from developers, No expiring bought Season passes, fair-ish cosmetic prices OW2 = Overley competitive, broken promises and no care for fans and outrageous cosmetic prices, FOMO
@@drjamaymay405 Yet, MR epic skin isn't a recolored and the quality can be compared to legendary skins for OW with custom name card, spray and MVP animation tied to it. If anything this makes OW monetization seem much more unfair and predatory.
I can't believe you didn't mention that the battle pass is only $5. That was the only reason I bought it, then stopped playing the next day. If it was 10, I wouldn't of bought it, then stopped. They got my money because it was only $5. That really was worth mentioning
The battle pass is $5 because season 0 is only 1 month. Season 1's battle pass will be $10 and have twice or more content in it as seasons will be around 3 months long.
7:07 "A slick game that is an iteration rather than a clone." Wait a minute. This used to be the formula everyone praised OG Blizzard for! Did NetEase out-Blizzard Blizzard?
What’s pretty fascinating about Marvel rival’s blowing up is how so much of the “stars” of the game ROGHT isn’t just about “the usual” suspects like the avengers, Spider-man or even the Xmen but you have high engagement over the more B lister super heroes like Cloak and Dagger, Jeff the land shark and fucking SQUIRREL GIRL.
As a TF2 guy who actually played OW1, I hope for the best for this game, but I really hope they don't only listen to the comp players and make the same monetary mistakes OW1 did. Greed is a very slippery slope.
I dunno man, 490 lattice for a battlepass that gives you 400 lattice back (100 if you are free 2 play) seems preety cheap to me 90cents for the battlepass is good value
That boot dev advertisement is a blessing for me. I just finished my C# course and planning to start learning Python. May one day I'll got a job in game development.
OW hasn't been in great shape for a *long* time now, granted, but let's not pretend Marvel Rivals isn't popping off right now largely because 1. it's much newer 2. marvel
@jetsflyingoffatrain4338 agreed. I dismissed it entirely because of marvel. This is the first time I'm hearing good things about the game and now I at least want to try it
Both these reasons are null due to 1. The other most recent Hero Shooter, Concord, was wiped out of existence. 2. People were hating Marvel (including Marvel fans) before this game appeared.
I still can’t believe Blizzard, and already rich and successful company, chose to destroy their legacy and the trust of their player base over more money in their peak popularity. It wasn’t just Overwatch, it was everything they ever built. I wonder how the og ow, Diablo, and hearthstone staff feel.
Already, Marvel Rivals is retreading the same mistakes OW1 made. I'm worried that once the honeymoon phase ends, the community will take a nosedive into pure toxicity. Almost all of the fun heroes are DPS, barely anyone wants to play vanguard or strategist. The hero pools are so heavily skewed for Duelists. Healing sustain is insane, all the ingredients for a GOATs formula is there. If the meta ends up being 3-3 tanks and supports or any variant of that, the players are gonna get annoyed and bored fast. The devs are insisting that they won't do role queue (like how OW1 devs insisted that as well before eventually caving). I'd say it'll take about 3 months for them to change their tune. I find it odd that they don't wanna implement role queue to prevent players from playing classes they don't want to play (even though role queue quite literally is meant to prevent that) but they have a ban system in play that's arguably even more restrictive. Funny part is that they actually don't conceal the profiles of the players in a match prior to the ban picks, so if you recognize a name or see a profile banner indicating them to be a Hulk main or something, banned immediately.
I mean is it even surprising? All the playable characters are free from the start, unlike its competitors where you have to buy them with nasty microtransactions.
Lattice is the way it is because in some gachas, the 'origin currency' usually can buy other things, packs or something. So when you earn premium currency ingame, its usually the 'converted' currency and the 'origin currency' remains only available via cash purchase. All 'converted' currency is earned ingame, or via battlepass.
Fun and enjoyable game attracts people. Sexiness can be fine as a nice bonus, so long as it's handled well, but acting like that's a super major point for playing any and all games is just plain stupid, insulting to gamers by making them all look like perverted horn dogs and ignores how Overwatch suffered from egregious monetization and other bad decision making that allowed Marvel Rivals to gain major foothold alongside it being based on a very recognizable IP.
@@stefanradebach2889 Nah attractiveness matters as much as any other aesthetic element, no need to bend yourself into a pretzel to try to downplay the character design. Nobody wants to play a 6 just because it represents their irl looks, well not enough to carry a games sales anyway.
I've never seen a hero shooter do such a great job of encouraging teamwork & team play. You'll find selfish ragers in any game, but I've been really impressed by how often I see people wait on their hero picks to fill gaps for the team & take advantage of team up bonuses. Overall I've had a lot more fun with Marvel rivals than I ever did with overwatch. Also: Forget Blizzard.
The funniest moment to me was watching a streamer say no one's going to like it cuz it's a super hero game then watching them play OverWatch like dude that's literally a game about super heros in their own universe.
"Ive got skins for Phara, and im not going anywhere" No one thinks this way. You either have time for a new game or not, youre either invested in the idea or not, you either have the money or not. But no one thinks: "Oh no all the shiny skins from the other game make me wanna stay"
Thought that too. I have quite a few skins in OW and that was never, not once a consideration when I decided to uninstall the game. I was just not having fun anymore. Same thing when trying Rivals, I was just curious and never considered the fact that I have more skins for my heroes over on OW. It's a nice little bonus but not the reason I play.
Yeah, I used to play OW1, I had a lot of good skins for characters I liked, but the instant OW2 appeared and none of my friends wanted in, I went back to TF2 and never looked back. I was kind of sad when OW1 died, but I know leaving was the best decision. Skins shouldn't be an anchor for any game.
Unfortunately many people do think like that. Its the sunk-cost fallacy and this line of reasoning makes it difficult for people to abandon anything they’ve invested heavily into
That not exactly what he is talking about, he came about it the wrong way but what I believe he means is when you spend so much money on a game and you don't want to leave it after dropping so much dosh on it. I've experience this with game like DFO and I think like that for OW for awhile I had so many skins I didn't want to quit some of them I paid for but eventually both games got boring for me and I was like fuck the money I spent I'm done.
I used to play OW1 and grinded the fuck out of it to get event skins for my favorite heroes in the first year or so I stopped playing it like half a year later, and only touched it twice since then, once in 2021 and once after OW2 launch at best I think "oh, if I want to play the game at least I have cool skins" and not "I will play because I have cool skins"
I've been a veteran overwatch player ever since the launch. I've tried Marvel Rivals and I was very impressed, fully unlocked roster which is pretty big, cool hero designs and complex gameplay. I don't even care about the obvious hero design inspirations because Overwatch copied many designs from Tf2 anyway. However I do have issues that make me not want to play regularly. Performance and clunky hero abilities. I can play most games at 200fps in 1440p but in MR I can barely get 150fps downscaled to 1080p with everything on low. Ofc, it's more than playable but just disappointing and hope that it improves. Some heroes I just feel like they aren't responsive like Loki, his Clone is super fidgety. Or Black panther's jump off climbing being inconsistent. And the crosshair offset. And the movement being weird, idk how to explain it Another problem I see is that most fun heroes are DPS while tanks are kinda just existing, Basically tons of small little issues and jank that in isolation aren't anything crazy but during many games can be noticeable
I've never played a match of Overwatch (or other match-based shooter games) before in my life. The mix of super powers and characters I'm familiar with, great looking character design, and Marvel universe is a winning combination and got me to try it and play a few matches today. I like games that don't take themselves too seriously, and Marvel is a good fit for that vibe. Had a good experience and fun time. If they were able to get someone like me to try it, it's no doubt they're doing well.
The whole concept of a paid currency that has a 1 to 1 exchange rate with earned currency isn’t some new innovation as it’s the same system in Zenless Zone Zero which is a gacha game by HoyoVerse that’s very popular. The system works well in gacha games because unlike Marvel Rivals, ZZZ and other gachas have limited time banners that feature high rank or “S” ranked units. This system allows players to earn currency in game which they can then use to obtain said units or they can just buy the paid currency and then use that to obtain the units. Allowing players to buy currency means that even if a player is mostly free to play, they can unlock characters they were looking forward to as soon as they come out or if a banner is ending, they can buy extra currency on top of the earned currency to hopefully get the character they want.
Ones a first-person shooter the other is a third-person shooter. For this reason, I play both, they itch different scratches you could say. How has this not been noticed? Because the people driving these narratives don't ever play more than one game at a time, there is no rotation for them and they play every title until full burnout forces them to quit. They consume all their content food and shit out everything else. Gamers need to wake the fuuuuuuuk up. For example: When was the last time you compared Destiny and Warframe? Both space operas with similar storylines and abilities, one is 1st-person the other is 3rd-person. They don't get compared because they're different games lol
its because selling a narrative drives engagement numbers for creators because they can market to jaded overwatch players, and the Rivals community is in the honeymoon phase. People are already noticing the disparity of duelists players and how this effecting every single mode of the game, and believe me once the honeymoon phase is over, it will be nonstop bitching. It's funny you mention D2, because I remember after curse of osiris and warmind expansions being horrifically bad, many D2 players jumped ship to Warframe and were calling it the "savior" of Looter shooters (even large youtube skillup covered warframe for like 2 straight years), and then.... Forsaken released LOL (the best expansion in the entire franchise). Those same players realized that while warframe was great, it was never gonna scratch the same itch that Destiny 2 did. History always repeats itself, and its embarrassing that gamers have no foresight of this.
Funny cause I stopped playing D2 and OW cause of the awful monetisation and content removal. Yet warframe is still free with no content removal, and Im enjoying rivals. Maybe just make a good game guys.
@niersu so then what's the issue? You are wise to stay away from a game you don't enjoy, but that's not the point of OP's comment. Some people can enjoy both games because they scratch different needs, and that's not wrong. But right now the discourse is so toxic that you have to choose 1 singular game to play and support like it's a gang war, and to me that's just idiotic and anti-consumer. Anyone jaded that doesn't wanna give OW another chance is valid, but I personally want both games to push each other regardless in a healthy competitve market, and I think the people reducing the quality work put into Marvel Rivals with a label like "overwatch killer" are actually disservicing it imo; it's so much greater then that and can stand on its own as a quality game. This is not a situation like with XDefiant where it had to rely on the COD killer label, so idk the discourse has been weird but expected since it's the honeymoon phase. Let's hope they figure out a solution for the duelist issue, because it's very real and the solution of role queue being proposed could make or break the game
@@hunchosett Overall we probably agree on this whole discussion between OW and Rivals, I think labeling Rivals the “Overwatch killer” as you said diminishes the game and doesnt allow people to appreciate it for being its own thing. However, on top of Rivals simply appealing to a larger fan base I have seen a few OW streamers say the exact same thing “I can play Rivals for 12 hours straight and still want to keep going, after a few hours of OW Im ready to get off”. Blizzard have consistently upset their player base with various decisions, I mean for fucks sake they put the number 2 in their title and failed to deliver on practically everything they said would be in the game. No, Rivals isn’t scratching a different itch, it’s scratching the itch OW failed to.
@@Jordan-ec9dci can play rivals for hours and only overwatch for 1 is a shit argument. These streamers have been playing overwatch for years, burnout happens when ya only play or do 1 thing mainly. Recency bias is real and people are refusing to acknowledge it.
Blizzard did multiple things wrong but the most baffling one was to make a dress-up simulator first person. They have $80 skins that only your teammates and enemies can see. Marvel is going to eat their lunch. Cheaper skins, no over promise, and you can see your character.
It technically isn't, but the fact the majority that come out are bad and full of greedy money grabbing makes it feel like it is an oversaturated genre.
5:59 just a correction black widow does not use a grappling hook in this game not complaining just saying the only thing in the character kits that are the same is a sniper rifle
You really explain my entire disdain for Overwatch currently. Even coming back for OW Classic I was just angry. Just angry at all the lost potential for the game and world.
Maybe if Mike didn't facilitate the downfall of OW into a recycling plant and microtransaction factory, his thoughts and opinions might actually be valid. Imagine sabotaging a franchise then talking shit to another game a company outperforming you (sorry, the company you abandoned for a fat bag) in basically every metric.
Having good character design and gameplay unlike Concord shows that players still hunger for that TF2/OW multiplayer experience, we just need company cultural decisions to not get in the way, and to just design a game everyone would love, even people who just like to download free shit and not spend a dime...
I find one part about the battle pass very weird. In the battle pass, you first unlock MVP animation, then the skin. But the animation is a skin-exclusive. You unlock it and you can't use it until you unlock a later reward.
I feel like in an era of "diverting the male gaze" and portraying men in a very "soft" way, it's very hard to ignore that the game has made every single female character absolutely stunning and every male character looks fantastic and masculine too. I mean I had never even heard of Luna before this game. She looks fantastic in the game. I looked up how she looks in the comics. And they made her 10x prettier than in her comics where she's already drawn as an attractive girl, but she just looks even better in the game. If this was one of the big western studios I can guarantee her appearance would be: shorter legs, strong chin, deeper voice, broader shoulders and arms. I can fn guarantee you. But instead these developers know their audience. All the other female characters are also very pretty, even the slightly chunky character squirrel girl is still cutesy. She just kinda looks like a human squirrel which I guess makes sense lol
It wasn't quite stillborn. It was more like the baby that lived an hour before leaving behind a devastated dad (Sony) and a mom (Firewalk Studios) who died in childbirth on top of everything else. Except, y'know, nowhere near as tragic because it was just a video game.
Crazy part about additions like Jeff, Luna Snow, & CloaknDagger is when things are executed well, It doesn't need any reverence at all. It'll earn respect from being surrounded by other notable names.
Anyone familiar with the Eastern F2P gacha/mobile game scene is going to be very at home with the dual currency thing where you have a separate premium currency that is converted 1:1 into the game's main MTX shop currency. For a popular example, Genshin Impact has the exact same thing going on with its Genesis Crystals: they're a premium currency you buy with real money, and then you convert them 1:1 into Primogems, which are the currency you then use to do your gacha rolls and buy premium items. There are instances in Genshin though where you buy items directly using Genesis Crystals, like say the premium character outfits, but as the aforementioned example shows this isn't a new thing in the gacha game space.
The best part about Marvel Rivals is that, aside from a few outliers, every hero feels broken in their own way and almost entirely unique compared to other heroes. I hope they maintain that with future hero/villain additions, because that's been my favorite part about it so far.
On monetization - you can also combine lattice with Units earned through the battle pass or challenges to buy skins potentially without even spending any money.
Marvel Rivals is way way way more like Paladins than Overwatch, and Paladins did most of the "hero shooter" stuff first, so OW should be getting as much flack as Marvel Rivals is now
Marvel Rivals is doing so good because there is a LARGE collection of people who love and want a GOOD hero shooter. The hero shooter fatigue has been because OW2 has been an abject failure and other games have adopted/adapted the parts of OW that were bad. Marvel Rivals took what made OW good, cut out the bullshit, and built a genuinely fun, novel game with tons of inspiration to draw from for future heroes/maps/mechanics. I hope it continues to succeed long-term because it's honestly so much fun
A couple things people seem to miss about Marvel Rivals' monetization: 1.) You can earn the blue unit currency by completing event missions and doing the heroic journey achievements. So while the skins by themselves can cost somewhere between $14 to $20, you actually get a relatively nice discount by completing those missions and achievements, if not outright pay for the skins. 2.) The Battle Pass has both the gold and the blue units as rewards. The gold you can convert to blue. Which means you'll get even MORE units to spend towards skins. So while the skins themselves aren't cheaper than in OW2, Marvel Rivals gives you a way to actually earn them by playing the game. Unlike OW2, which you NEED to spend money to get.
The problems start when the meta has crystallised and some characters are played much more often because they are simply more effective than others. Then the balancing comes and the nerfing starts and players complain that their favourite characters are no longer fun. This will be the next challenge for Rivals to overcome.
I know you mentioned it in a negative light (or maybe misunderstood what you meant) but paladins is definetly not a clone. Its very much its own thing nowadays. The iteration that game has done is a lot. Theres a reason why despite all the shit the game has gone through its still chugging along.
the main reason why lattice (the premium credits) can pretty much only be used to convert into credits is because the battle pass shouldn’t be able to be obtained free to play. The battle pass has great value but they don’t want to allow people to get it so easily for free. So they added a premium currency you can only buy.
The game does the one thing Overwatch couldnt. It gave the players total freedom, it isn't just X hero counters Y, instead its "You "COULD" counter that hero with this hero, BUT they have things to deal with you too so its about skill over hard counters" This showcase is proves this, because Widowmakers Mine is terrible and her only other redeeming quality is grapple she has no form of engagement.

OW epic skins are $20
They are basically the same
@@drjamaymay405 Yet, MR epic skin isn't a recolored and the quality can be compared to legendary skins for OW with custom name card, spray and MVP animation tied to it. If anything this makes OW monetization seem much more unfair and predatory.
If you build a great game, people will come no matter the genre.
We don't have hero shooter fatigue, we have LAZY/BORING hero shooter fatigue.
Hawkeye's animation is so damn good! it's like it looks like a real person's using a bow. Looks like every animation is designed in 144 fps
Gonna be 10 next season, rivals have already come out and said this
7:07 "A slick game that is an iteration rather than a clone." Wait a minute. This used to be the formula everyone praised OG Blizzard for! Did NetEase out-Blizzard Blizzard?
Concord defenders are on death row.
The game was just bad. Hero shooters are still on demand!
1:28 FORTNITE MENTIONED

😂
As a TF2 guy who actually played OW1, I hope for the best for this game, but I really hope they don't only listen to the comp players and make the same monetary mistakes OW1 did.
Greed is a very slippery slope.
I dunno man, 490 lattice for a battlepass that gives you 400 lattice back (100 if you are free 2 play) seems preety cheap to me
90cents for the battlepass is good value
Gonna be interested in the latest cope about how this has nOthInG to Do wITh character design
"The Finals" is another free-to-play game that is TONS OF FUN!!!!
marvel has cool character designs and brand identity, and it has accessible low skill floor mechanics
That boot dev advertisement is a blessing for me. I just finished my C# course and planning to start learning Python. May one day I'll got a job in game development.
Good luck mate. I'm working in IT, but thinking about starting solo indie game dev.
OW hasn't been in great shape for a *long* time now, granted, but let's not pretend Marvel Rivals isn't popping off right now largely because
1. it's much newer
2. marvel
Can tell you didn't even watch the video before commenting lmao
Neither have you. The video is 18 minutes long, you posed this comment when it was out for 6 minutes.@CoolTwinky1
marvel is points against it, I haven't touched a marvel product in over a year now
@jetsflyingoffatrain4338 agreed. I dismissed it entirely because of marvel. This is the first time I'm hearing good things about the game and now I at least want to try it
Both these reasons are null due to
1. The other most recent Hero Shooter, Concord, was wiped out of existence.
2. People were hating Marvel (including Marvel fans) before this game appeared.
If the corn sfm of Overwatch works harder than you, you really fall brother. hahaha
Everything w0ke turns to sh1t.
It’s more that the Marvel IP is selling this. If this was a new hero shooter with completely new world and characters it would probably be DOA.
Lattice is the way it is because in some gachas, the 'origin currency' usually can buy other things, packs or something. So when you earn premium currency ingame, its usually the 'converted' currency and the 'origin currency' remains only available via cash purchase. All 'converted' currency is earned ingame, or via battlepass.
fun and sexy attracts people who knew.
Hahaha I'm sure you'll tick off just the right people with this comment 😅
@@stefanradebach2889 Nah attractiveness matters as much as any other aesthetic element, no need to bend yourself into a pretzel to try to downplay the character design. Nobody wants to play a 6 just because it represents their irl looks, well not enough to carry a games sales anyway.
@@stefanradebach2889 u can't really say something like this in a world where nikke and azur lane exist
@@JovencitaPera tbf tf2 doesnt have the most attractive characters either lol
I've never seen a hero shooter do such a great job of encouraging teamwork & team play. You'll find selfish ragers in any game, but I've been really impressed by how often I see people wait on their hero picks to fill gaps for the team & take advantage of team up bonuses.
Overall I've had a lot more fun with Marvel rivals than I ever did with overwatch.
Also: Forget Blizzard.
16:32 No we don't!
The funniest moment to me was watching a streamer say no one's going to like it cuz it's a super hero game then watching them play OverWatch like dude that's literally a game about super heros in their own universe.
"Ive got skins for Phara, and im not going anywhere"
No one thinks this way.
I used to play OW1 and grinded the fuck out of it to get event skins for my favorite heroes in the first year or so
I stopped playing it like half a year later, and only touched it twice since then, once in 2021 and once after OW2 launch
at best I think "oh, if I want to play the game at least I have cool skins" and not "I will play because I have cool skins"
And the movement being weird, idk how to explain it
Another problem I see is that most fun heroes are DPS while tanks are kinda just existing,
Basically tons of small little issues and jank that in isolation aren't anything crazy but during many games can be noticeable
The game's artstyle is just so damn appealing.
Moon Knight has never looked better.
Marvel Rivals as a game... is OK-ish It's not like WOW THIS GAME IS AMAZING! It's fun enough and you can play with your Xbox/PS/PC buddies.
I played OW1 on launch and felt like i was the only one that was underwhelmed. I played rivals with low expectations and Was WOWed
I haven't played since OW1, but I was wowed by Rivals. It feels very good.
How the hell are people saying hero shooters are an oversaturated genre??
@@zc8673 fr we got tf2, ow2, and now rivals. That’s about it lmao
He didn't abandon blizzard. He was removed. So arguable his opinion means even less
Having good character design and gameplay unlike Concord shows that players still hunger for that TF2/OW multiplayer experience, we just need company cultural decisions to not get in the way, and to just design a game everyone would love, even people who just like to download free shit and not spend a dime...
Marvel rivals is giving us what we thought Overwatch 2 would
I find one part about the battle pass very weird.
She just kinda looks like a human squirrel which I guess makes sense lol
iunno, a lot of people been talking about optimization bugs. If they dont fix it before their honeymoon phase is over. It might struggle.
the only thing that could tear blizzard down off its pillar of dominance was itself.
Damn your uploads always leave me ROCK SOLID!!!
"We just saw concord die." That game was never alive in the first place
My favorite overwatch content is people slamming on the lack of overwatch content.
A couple things people seem to miss about Marvel Rivals' monetization:
1.) You can earn the blue unit currency by completing event missions and doing the heroic journey achievements.
00:05 Concord didn't die. At best, it was a stillborn.
the main reason why lattice (the premium credits) can pretty much only be used to convert into credits is because the battle pass shouldn’t be able to be obtained free to play. The battle pass has great value but they don’t want to allow people to get it so easily for free. So they added a premium currency you can only buy.
Basically, industry leaders don't know what they are doing and just following whats trendy, all in the while, we just want good games.
The game does the one thing Overwatch couldnt. It gave the players total freedom, it isn't just X hero counters Y, instead its "You "COULD" counter that hero with this hero, BUT they have things to deal with you too so its about skill over hard counters"
This showcase is proves this, because Widowmakers Mine is terrible and her only other redeeming quality is grapple she has no form of engagement.
Marvel Rivals is the first time in about a decade (RE Remakes and FFVII Remakes came close) that I have actually felt addicted to a video game. I have nearly 120 hours into it and I didn't play the beta.
They got me with the character and art design and I'm not going anywhere. I love this game, it's an absolute blast.
If only Overwatch hadn't had wasted the name Overwatch 2... They would have been able to make a new game to compete, but now that ship has sailed. 🤣
Be prepared... Overwatch 3: The PvE revenge, coming soon!!!
@@pixavier9746 LOL if they did this it'd be shameless. I could imagine it being the exact same game as before, but they wipe everyone's inventories so they can resell the same skins and currency a third time!
