Rivals is just the first REAL competition Overwatch has had in the genre and just shows how much more they could have done over the years but just didnt
@KingMaler00 even something as simple as the replay viewer is lightyears ahead of what Blizzard has in OW, which mind you, will be a decade old come 2026.
Lets just pray they don't give in to the loud minority and implement role queues like Overwatch did after people whined, it was the beginning of the end for OW in making it toxic trash.
People keep saying how overwatch is gonna die now. Actually, rival’s entrance into the market is the best scenario for overwatch. It will push them to keep making better content otherwise they’ll lose their player base.
@@Squidaredumb I think Blizzard would sooner just let Overwatch die and fade rather than divert actual money resources into making the game better. It's already a skeleton crew keeping Overwatch 2 alive.
As an Overwatch player, Rivals is the best thing to happen to Overwatch. They're giving away 3 Legendary skins that were originally intended for the shop, and giving away 3 more legendary skins through twitch drops next week. I hope Rivals keeps up the pressure. Overwatch has treated us like crap for too long.
Don't let the vanity of skins persuade you to keep playing Overwatch. There's a better hero shooter out now that's more balanced than Overwatch ever was, and it's only been out for a couple weeks. Until Blizzard changes OW's balancing again and hits the hard reset, the game is never going to come back.
those lootboxes were probably the best lootboxes in all of gaming though. you got a ton of them, there were no keys that you had buy, the chances to get a legendary skin were pretty high and you got currency for duplicates.
@@jaykay365 you could buy loot boxes in overwatch, but you could also get a lot by playing the game, the ways i could name of the top of my head would be a. leveling up b. playing arcade and c. playing during events
Rivals really makes me realize how odd it is to buy skins in a first person shooter. I'm guilty of it too in Overwatch (didn't buy many though), but 3rd person shooters let you constantly see the skin purchased, which is FAR better.
@Destructinator44 Yeah, but those tend to lose their novelty for me very quickly. It's like "Ohh, re-skin for my weapon, ok cool, anyway!!" The character skins themselves are far more visually interesting and being able to see them constantly in Rivals unlike in Overwatch is a greater incentive for more people to purchase them.
Totally get what you mean. Only ever bought skins for Reinhardt for that exact reason cause you can see him in third person a lot. But even then thats not 100% of the time so its really just not that worth it upon reflection
Another thing is that I like that for skins in rivals, the vfx changes for the moves, like venom's cyan clash skin, rocket's christmas skin, and jeff's winter skin. while overwatch vfx changes are locked behind mythic skins
Marvel Rivals proved 2 groups of people wrong. People who says the audience is tired with Superheroes, and people who says Hero shooter genre is oversaturated,
People are just tired of cash grabs, I don't think people care that much about anything beyond that it's just a lot of media especially recently is getting extremely dumbed down and the quality of said products is way less so it's refreshing when we get something that isn't but it's sadly no longer the norm

I really thought people were just over hero shooters. Turns out they were all just waiting for a good one. Which does raise a question. I know Overwatch 2 sucks, but is Marvel Rivals so much better than every other competitor in this genre? My only interaction with hero shooters is Rule 34 so I have no idea.
Precisely. I say the same when people say Marvel fatigue in movies. People are not tired of Marvel movies series. See Gauradians III as proof, they are tried of bad Marvel movies and series. They started pushing them out like candy instead of baking them like a fine soufle.

@11:47 This defense is a bit narrow. Sunk cost fallacy is not an effective model for anyone without problematic tendencies. I played 1400 hours of OW1 and 2. Once they locked heroes behind a battle pass, changed the game for no reason, and continued to ride the tails of success from 2017, I was done. Marvel Rivals was a *return* to what I wanted. But the black widow hero design in rivals is clearly inspired by the widowmaker kit. She doesn't even have a stingers ability which black widow is famous for.
Casual players have always vastly outnumbered hardcore sweats in any game. So when a game does _a really good job_ at being highly accessible and fun for casual players, it's naturally going to attract a bigger audience than any game that tries to sell a super-hardcore competitive experience. Overwatch USED to be that kind of casual-friendly game, but then it lost it's way soon after the Overwatch League forced it's way in.
The problem is that casual gamers are flight risks, they will quickly game hop to the newest thing. Live service games need to turn game hoppers into long term players, which is fundamentally anti-casual.
It can be confusing because hardcore or competitive players are more likely to be vocal about how they feel about the direction of the game or whatever, so if you look at something like a reddit post it can seem like most players think the game should be perfectly balanced and highly competitive, when in reality most players aren’t even in the subreddit.

Successfully launching a f2p liver service game using the marvel IP doesn’t scream that they know what they are doing. Unless the game was a total mess it was going to be somewhat successful. Most PvP games are fun at launch because everybody is playing to have fun. The difficult part is maintaining engagement once the game gets solved. And I don’t think the design philosophy will enable them to make that pivot. The reluctance to nerf, the seasonal buffs, the team ups, and the lack of role queue are great for fun in theory, but in practice allow for some very abusable strategies that may ruin the game for casual players.
@PoliAstroN rivals is still in the honeymoon phase and has Marvel Cbaracters. Its a goor game but acting like It does play extremely similarly to OW is just willfull ignorance.
the rocket science of ''Just make it good'' somehow still baffles these devs. we've had an ERA of flat stale bad UI, copypaste bad design and horrible decisions for years now, while if you go back to play old games, they have so much charm to them even before you press the start button, more and more modern games seem to start realising that presentation and vibe is also as important as the gameplay
I hate to say it man but Marvel Rivals’ biggest aspects are how it mimics other market games. It’s UI and hud is like a weird hybrid of Overwatch, Apex, etc. If you like the game, go ahead but nothing Marvel Rivals is doing is somehow “a break from the norm” Its UI and upfront presentation looks like any other mobile game/free to play shooter on the market
@@LateNightHalo I can believe that, I think we got to the point even seeing someone making anything even slightly above norm copy/paste slop makes it GOTY at this point it has gotten so bad. @SenkaZverI know right. It’s so easy to make it good. It only costs a lot of money (which they don’t have), talent (which is hard to come by), and time (which they probably have a day job anyway). Same. I did try coming back to OW but after 30 mins I asked myself "how did I put up with this horrible balance, static metas, etc." Since there's no hero bans or anything like that, it's ALWAYS the SAME thing in high ranks outside of blue moon matches. Widow meta rn? You'll see her 100% of games outside specific maps in GM. I grew tired of that. Not just that, but they are genuinely LOST when it comes to balance. The latest patch notes had me laughing. The game is basically a skin simulator with an FPS attached. Everything about the game is carried by what OW1 laid out and they haven't done much at all since to even justify the existence of OW2 other than make A LOT of things significantly worse, lay off a lot of devs that made the game feel alive, lower cinematic budgets, give Kiriko and Mercy 100 skins (btw, did you know Kiriko got the most content this Avatar crossover? Crazy), give majority of mythics to women (finally it's 5 to 9 now due to Rein getting a mythic! ...), they keep focusing WAYYYY too hard on winrates, ults feel so UNIMPRESSIVE (unlike MR), etc. Especially the ULT thing, DPS ults are a joke in OW. And the 5v5, I never liked it, and MR proved to me once again that 6v6 is 10x better 😂
i uninstalled overwatch a month ago bc the community is unbearable and i knew there was a light at the end of the tunnel. rivals has been a wonderful experience

One of the biggest reasons imo that it has been and has stayed successful is something you failed to mentioned...its not only f2p, but ALL the heroes are free also and will always be free in the future. This is not common for f2p games to do.
Agreed, they did a lot of good things for free player. You can earn around 300 Units (currency for buying skin) per months and cheaper skin cost 600 while Unique skin is 1600-2200. So free player will get free skin every 2 months
@Hellbughunter I swear I heard that only the first presented heroes would be free, with the rest (any hero who'll be added by a future update) being paid
Are you serious, the battle passes don't go away!? OMG I wanted something like that forever in a game!! It always bugged me how devs would spend so much time on a ton of customizations that will disappear and never be seen again. Having multiple battle passes is great, a player could progress through them at their own pace without the pressure of it being a limited time thing!
Dr Strange portal is about 30 times better than symmetra portals. You can go in and out, you can see and shoot/heal through them, and of course make traps for enemy players. And they arent attached to the ground, so they are just infinitely more dynamic.
They arent supposed to be the same thing, strange portal has 15 times the cooldown. Strange portal is basically on par with an ultimate and arguably used like one. Sym TP doesnt have the cooldown of an ult and isnt supposed to be used like one.

Blizzard deserves it. They have no idea wtf theyre doing anymore. They recently tried to bring back 6v6 (prob to bring back players after rivals released) .... and they somehow made the game even worse. They just keep making the game worse and worse to play. Less and less fun, in the names of "balance."
When everyone asked for 6v6 for years they finally put it in when it’s way too late and no one cares anymore. 😂 They had more than enough chances to prove themselves to the community and make some strides in the right direction and when they finally decide to do so it’s when Marvel Rivals drops. I’m glad they’re getting the long awaited punishment they deserve.
Actually what they did, was they put in 6v6 because everybody was begging for it, but they specifically put in the WORST version of 6v6 as a way to "own" their playerbase. They were like "yea you wanted 6v6 huh? Here it is! Bet you don't think OUR version of 5v5 is so bad now huh?". They knew dang well nobody wanted day 1 6v6, but that's what they put in because they were more interested in shitting on their own playerbases feedback than they are trying to make their game good, which tracks considering they haven't tried to make their game good a single time in the last 5 years.
1. Trialing 6v6 has happened for a long time before rivals was even hyped. 2. Rivals feels like overwatch 1 which is why so many ow pros love the game. People are acting like marvel rivals is doing something new but they haven’t. It is copied homework. (Saying this having hit gm in both.) 3. Ow was ruined because of its move to 5v5 detracting from the gameplay that made it fun. (5v5 is way easier and feels more like death-match) 4. Marvel rivals is performing exactly how overwatch started even when ow was a payed game. Issues may arise when balance is more necessary and impactful once the general player base improves at the game. (This is what overwatch failed at e.g. not being able to properly address goats or double shield, the later being an easy fix.) Overwatch’s balance philosophy failed because they tried to make all hero’s equal when some took no skill in comparison to others. Who wants to play a harder hero for the same value as a brain dead one.
15:28 I’m glad someone else is pointing this out. A large part of the reason that I stopped playing destiny two early on was recognizing this exact part of their battle pass. I stopped playing overwatch two when I realized that after saving up all of my points to get the battle pass, I was never going to unlock everything because I was too busy with college and life issues.
Beautiful characters, I can grind the purple coins on bots, obscure character picks made with love that’s instantly noticed by long time fans of these characters. Game is incredibly fun, no roll queue so we can play our favorite characters with no punishment, reporting system that works and tells you the results of any action. It’s the most consumer friendly f2p game I’ve ever seen and I have had a negative bias towards them for all my life. It’s not lightning in a bottle. They are just treating every aspect of this game with respect and care. That used to be the norm for the industry.
Yeah, doing bots is also definitely the best and easiest way to do the challenges especially. Which definitely gets a plus from me since not everyone is good at PVP as well.
@@Redsword603 Huh, I was already half-interested in the game, learning you can do challenges on bots has sold me. I would play so many more 'live service' games if their grind didn't involve forced participation in ranked modes. Not only because it's way harder to do the challenges and becomes an exercise in frustration (shoutout halo infinite on launch), but also that it often means your online matches are a complete shambles because half your team is playing the objective and the other half are too busy trying to collateral or whatever their challenge is and you lose hard, but can't really blame them for just wanting to do their dailies. Even fortnite really suffered from this. I remember how as soon as a new week of challenges dropped, because they were the same for everyone, you could go to whatever the location was and just farm 20 free kills every time. And half your matches would end up really short because half the players are wandering around with a fishing rod and 20 medkits and no gun because they have a challenge to survive storm damage or something.
Marvel Rivals is pretty much everything people wanted out of Overwatch 2 and even Overwatch 1. Add on the fact that it's filled with recognizable characters that thanks to the MCU most people are at least vaguely familiar with at least one.
No its just not. I am nolifing marvel rivals atm and its literally just a worse overwatch. Which is fair, they had years to improve the formula. But were already seeing all the cracks and problems. If this game didnt have the extremely strong marvel IP it would just be a blip because the gameplay unfortunately is really clunky compared to overwatch.
@@robotdeniro-csgo5986I disagree, rivals is a better overwatch, at least compared to current 2 and what 1 was like at the end. Overwatch in its early days was peak, everyone dealt OP, which for a hero shooter is what you want, and that’s what rivals is like. I don’t even really get why you think it’s worse, most of the differences are direct improvements
Not necessarily. You need good publicity and accessibility. Anything else is optional. Tetris isn't the best game of all time, but it is in the top 3 because it is easy to get into and anything can run it. Minecraft is not the best sandbox or survival game. But it is very easy to play when compared to something like Space Engineers, From the Depths or 7 Days to Die This is why the mobile market is somehow still alive. Everyone has a phone. Everyone can play your game. This game is simply less competitively demanding and is from a popular franchise. Vs OW that is focused on balance (requiring a bigger time investment as to get competitive enough to enjoy it) and has a world made from scratch.
Right. Hoping Rivals doesn't go through a Balance Roulette like OW did. As a Mercy and Symm player, the amount of changes done to my mains is an absolute slogfest and a turn-off. I always found playing Tank in OW dreadful, but it's so damn fun in Rivals to just dive in as Venom or blast flankers as Peni. Idk how they did it, but it's definitely working!
As far as buying currency that has to be converted to another currency… this brings to mind Honkai Star Rail, which has an IDENTICAL setup- setting aside packs, direct currency purchases then have to be converted into Stellar Jades, which you can then use for gacha pulls. This leads me to think that, as a Chinese company like Hoyoverse, Netease may be doing this to avoid getting tripped up by some governmental regulation.
I think its more simple. There are things you can only buy with the currency you can buy for money like the battlepass. But the second currency is used to buy skins and you can earn it by playing. So its just to ensure people are still paying real money for some things and not just grinding everything. At least i think so.
I'm not sure what he means bc u can either earn units without paying through missions or u can pay real money for lattice to pay for skins or the battle pass and the prices he described are way more exaggerated with saying the skins r 35 dollars which just isn't true u can see that when he opens the store so alot of what he is saying is exaggerated or wrong
@@vilxxblack2472 It most likely is, since that's part of why most games let you buy currency instead of buying things directly. That, and it helps obfuscate the cost of stuff. The other reason is that while there may not be much available to buy with premium only currency at the moment, it opens the option to do so in the future.
6:50 you could say that it’s to pull in Widowmaker players but when going off of the comics which is their clear inspiration, Black Widow has almost ALWAYS used a sniper. She’s an assassin and she was usually always a sniper, the MCU were the ones that really brought out the fact she uses batons and dropped the fact that she always was a sniper. If anything Widowmaker could be seen as a blatant ripoff of Black Widow
@@warrxnt I really think this is a disingenuous argument. Black widow could’ve been given literally any weapon at all and it’d be comic accurate. The choice to make the character who players would call “Widow” a sniper was 100% intentional lol. Not that it’s a problem, but denying it is just silly
As a TF2 guy who actually played OW1, I hope for the best for this game, but I really hope they don't only listen to the comp players and make the same monetary mistakes OW1 did. Greed is a very slippery slope.
I will defend ow1 not ow2, ow1 had a great monetization method way better than any battle pass games. Ow1 had silly casual way to play in quick play and you could really play super try hard in comp, now ow2 is constantly sweaty shitty monetization and even worse balance than ow1 somehow. All blizzard had to do was constantly update ow1 with new content and they would still be a majority of hero shooter market. Now ow2 has haven false promises shitty monetization even worse balance somehow and a worse base game of 5v5 compared to 6v6. Blizzard didn’t shoot themselves in the foot with ow2 they literally killed themselves
I feel like there are a lot of criticisms you can say about Blizzard and their handling of OW1/2, but greed so clearly isn’t one of them I don’t understand why this narrative is so popular. OW1 was a paid game that had an extremely easy to access array of cosmetics such that the average player could get virtually all of them and certainly all of the ones they wanted within a relatively small amount of time. This worked for a while, but at some point everyone who wanted to play Overwatch had already bought Overwatch and nobody was buying lootboxes. These numbers aren’t published anywhere but it seems rather obvious given that loot boxes are earned so quickly and, within the few months of launch, were changed to not give duplicates. As far as I can see it, OW1 was going to lose full time support anyway. The business model doesn’t provide regular income as there is no incentive to spend money, and as such the game cannot indefinitely continue as a live service because all it does is lose money after the first few years. People talk about how it’s unfair that the payment method switched even though they paid for the original game, but $40 for 6-7 years of free skins is about as good as value as you’re going to get for something that was an inevitability. OW2’s main battle pass criticisms were that hero’s were locked behind it and that you couldn’t earn a new battle pass through completing one like in games like Fortnite. Both of these have been changed in the first like 2 seasons and have now been fixed for the vast majority of OW2s existence. All things considered the battle pass is fine. It’s strictly cosmetic and the skins are at least cheaper than Valorants lol. There are plenty of free skins given away via twitch drops or events that I really fail to see how this is an issue for the average player. At the end of the day, games have to be profitable and OW is not nearly the most predatory battle pass system out there. Maybe OW1 could’ve survived a few more years on its initial monetization system but sooner or later something was going to have to change, and OW2’s model is an objectively at decent enough way to deal with that lurking problem.
I love that they added some smaller MCU heroes. I never knew who Magik was until the game and if it weren’t for the animated Spiderman show, I never would’ve known who Cloak & Dagger, Squirrel Girl and Ironfist were
Overwatch is such a phenomenally mismanaged mess and it's a real shame. I mean they had a wholly original world and set of characters that people loved, myself included, and yet instead of leaning into that by producing an animated series or actually delivering on the promised PVE/story mode, they just kept pushing the same old formula and ever more greedy monetisation practices. Stupidly overpriced skins, locking new heroes behind a season pass, lazy cosmetics etc. It could have been a geniuniely massive IP that spawned movies, merch, and spin off games but instead it became an icon of everything wrong with today's game industry.
I think Marvels Rivals did monetization quite well. I didn't find it confuse because all conversion is 1 to 1. There is 3 types of currency with different uses. No gacha, no gamble.
Yes but three different types and it takes some reading to understand which is which and that they even convert. Not hard but also not intuitive. Additionally I would say it is a little predatory when you consider this and how much they are asking for. Idk maybe I’m a holdout but it just seems, a bit much, for so little.
@@erwerewolf That is not what "predatory" means. Predatory microtransactions means the company is kinda forcing you to buy the cosmetic which has no visual value for a lot of money. On top of that it is a special edition that you can buy only 1 week and will never, ever see the light again. Some go even further to add in-game advantages with microtransactions, that is predatory. What has Marvel Rivals done? Just play, get a free Hela skin + two types of in-game currencies that you can save up to buy skins or the pass itself. Sure lil bro, SOOOO predatory, my wallet died today.
No. Monetization is really bad. You just don't get it. It's true what you say about the currencies, it is not very confusing, that part is fine. But there is just not enough stuff to buy. It should have launched with way more skins and cosmetics. A lot of those 20 mil + players want to pour money into it, but can't find anything to buy, myself included.
no gambling is nice, but it shouldn't be the standard. obfuscation by putting in game purchases behind currency conversion is scummy. Imo Fortnite still has a better system, but they have more money so it's not the fairest comparison.
@@N7senseiI'm glad they put a lot of time into the game instead of cosmetics like you're suggesting. because now we have a good game that will live for a long time equaling MUCH more skins for everyone.
So an important note, is that yes, lattice has one use, converting to units. HOWEVER, that means that because you can earn units for free, you can quite literally get a half off discount on a skin bundle....for just playing the game.
What’s pretty fascinating about Marvel rival’s blowing up is how so much of the “stars” of the game ROGHT isn’t just about “the usual” suspects like the avengers, Spider-man or even the Xmen but you have high engagement over the more B lister super heroes like Cloak and Dagger, Jeff the land shark and fucking SQUIRREL GIRL.
The internet is going NUTZ 🌰🌰 for Doreen. For the usual reasons. I don't believe the devs anticipated this though, like how the devs behind Resident Evil Village claim to not understand why Lady Dimitrescu was so popular. I think Marvel Rivals devs genuinely don't know. They probably expected people to want Psylocke to get skins instead, like Kiriko in OW2.
The secret to any good Marvel or DC project is having some characters that are lesser known, because at one point *every* character was a lesser known one that nobody cared about. Even the X-men.
The only counterpoint I can think of for the multiple currencies has to do with platform holders and their purchase policies. For many games, the storefronts of the platforms they are on tend to have a policy that something purchased on one platform cannot be accessed on another. Games are the obvious example, but many times, skins and premium currency, if bought directly from Steam, PSN etc. cannot be accessed on the game on another platform through cross save. That's why you get things where, in order to have a skin follow you to other platforms, you don't buy the skin directly, but instead buy currency and THEN buy the skin. Some games are getting the platform holders to loosen up on this, but it's a slow go at it. Marvel Rivals is probably trying to set up the currency so that the currency purchased with money stays on the platform you bought it on, but then you can convert that currency into a form that CAN be taken everywhere. At least, that's what makes sense to me, if that's not how it works, well then, who knows.
I think one point that the quote misses is also that I -used to- have 15 Pharah skins. Then, Blizzard took them away and gave me some currency to repurchase some of them. Then, they also made the core principles of the game less enjoyable, and even decreased the quality of the base hero designs. I had sunk cost / investment with Overwatch some years ago. They wiped that slate clean in 2023. I haven't touched the game since, while still wanting a hero shooter. Rivals fit the niche perfectly.
@turftrash3971 When I launched OW 2 all my skins, icons, sprays etc. were gone. I kept my coins and got some new currency I could use. Not sure if that was some temporary bug or not, because I haven't touched the game since.
@@AwesomeRash big oof. Yeah you're supposed to keep everything. I know i did, i also got 7k comp credits for no reason on top of that. Definitely shotty work by blizzard
That was a bug that was patched, I believe they put out that if the issue was still going on to open up a ticket, It happened to me. I almost quit over it as I had about 1250 hours of skins and cosmetics built up. I had all of the cosmetics for several heroes. When they fixed it, I came back. Haven't launched since Rivals came out though.
The double currency is normal. Paid currency can be affected by things like credit card refunds. This allows the game to put your balance into negative and block you from playing until you buy enough to put it back into positive.

Marvel Rivals has avoided a lot of the mistakes Overwatch made, so I hope their collabs (if there will be any) better than OW. OW's collabs were just crappy skins that looked like cheap cosplays, and I hope Rivals actually adds playable crossover characters or much better skins if they do collabs
Acti-Blizz: *What are you talking about? Overwatch 2 and Diablo 4 are doing great!* Grinding Gear & NetEase looking at numbers: *Oh yeah-yeah, sure-sure*
So for overwatch to be doing well it should have the same player count as a marvel game that just released with enormous hype ? Overwatch has around 40k players daily just on steam, this is good numbers for a decade old game.

Marvel Rivals did the one important thing that a game needs. ITS FUN! They made fun their primary focus, something all the other games mentioned in this video did not do. Originally, that was overwatch's focus, but they quickly bit off more than they could chew with the OWL. Aside: Team-up abilities do a much better job than role queue for making a fun well-rounded team comp. This game is also way more forgiving in terms of team comp.
Damn, I wonder how Overwatch could lose it's unchallenged crown by doing 🧐 absolutely jack shit with the ip for 4 years; trying to push the most insanely inhumane competitive scene for an unwatchable game in esport; catering to .2% of the population by removing the option to pick many of the same character; blandifying balance; backtracking every promise used to justify the negligence and dare i say, hard reset the whole thing like it didn't happen except with less features? Marvel Rivals will end up in exactly the same place if they bother with the competitive scene
Meh, some of the changes you’re referring to are so obviously good editions to the game that I’m surprised they’re still brought up. You can’t pick the same characters as your teammates because it’s impossible to balance around and isn’t fun after the first few weeks. Role queue edited because playing with 5 DPS isn’t fun, as seen currently in Marvel Rival’s competitive. So on and so forth
I wasn't sick of the genre, I was sick of games. Overwatch got stale and stagnant - with balance changes being decided by Esports instead. Sure there were alternatives, but they largely copy the same formula. Marvel Rivals feels very fresh. So many characters and all of them feel varied, with many IMPROVING the mechanics and designs from Overwatch.
Marvel Rivals is the new shiny thing. The life cycle of a major brand or company developing a pvp shooter then it lasting 5 to 7 years before everyone is over it. If you've played more than one, you know that.
7:07 "A slick game that is an iteration rather than a clone." Wait a minute. This used to be the formula everyone praised OG Blizzard for! Did NetEase out-Blizzard Blizzard?
A lot of Free to play games feel like money funnels first gameplay second. Gameplay in Rivals feels amazing and the game doesn’t limit you from characters behind a paywall. I still think skins shouldn’t be so much in shops but the options of 6 dollar skins and even the premium ones are still better than many other f2p games.
Bellular, something you can add to the list of non-fomo earnings: Deep Rock Galactic. Even before you could just say "Hello I want to battlepass with this years old content" - they threw all the content you don't have from earlier season performance passes into these mission-findable lost equipment things. You just hear a low beeping in the caves, find the helmet, scan it, now you know where the equipment is - dig there, pick up the cosmetic from the pack, and you even got some upgrade resources alongside it too. Unfathomably based, even before they just turned on the "Yeah you can just replay other seasons now" thing.
Marvel Rivals was the first live service game i played where i actually bought a skin. The default Magneto skin just didn’t do it for me so i bought the more traditional comic book look. The design is great, the skin looks amazing, and i don’t feel shafted at all because i actually WANT this game to succeed and do well. Bravo!
MCU fatigue exist because the movies they've been dropping have been slop, the game being successful won't change that. I don't care much for the MCU, but as a person who enjoys spending a bit of my free time playing games, i will say, the game is pretty fun and refreshing. (Although cheaters are already in the game.) You can keep the game and the movies separate, apart from like costume collabs, but the game itself won't encourage me to watch their slop movies.
@@dukeofgotham4311I mean they said there isn't a fatigue which is true people show up for good movies, it's just more in the last few years this covers all media it's been extremely dumbed down and the quality of it a lot worse because now it's just about profit where before yes profit was a thought but there was also more care for what was being made now it's just throw out whatever and people will buy it complain and come again
I'm really someone that does only like a very few marvel related things. But when I saw the art direction of this game I was like "O k a y I s e e y o u " I'm also a long time Overwatch 1-2 Player, and man, I haven't had this much fun in a hero shooter for ages. This game absolut bangs in every direction, if they maintain this quality and support, there are great years ahead.
I went in fully expecting Netease to make another mediocre hero shooter clone that relies on Marvel's IP to get attention. But man, I'm not usually into hero shooters or competitive shooters in general. Heck im not even a Marvel fan, but MR definitely got me hooked
For the Lattice, you're actually not correct. While it is a 1:1 conversion, it is not just for the premium currency It can also be transferred to the battle pass currency as well. It likely will get used more as the seasons grow further and further from S0, and people want the skins in the battle passes
6:25 "Rivals doesnt just copy, it iterates" - you mean like Blizzard used to do? Their best titles were highly polished iterations on longstanding games.
5:59 just a correction black widow does not use a grappling hook in this game not complaining just saying the only thing in the character kits that are the same is a sniper rifle
What’s funny is he’s actually wrong about the world building, marvel rivals has it’s own lore which a lot of people gloss over. And the story NEEDS to be highlighted more on channels like this.
My favorite thing is that hulk can grab flying characters out of the air and pummel them all the way to the ground. So, rewarding to see an iron man thinking he's all safe just for me to launch into the air and have him dead before we hit the ground lol.
13:50 Important note here, Lattice can _also_ be converted 1-to-1 with the Battlepass currency, meaning you can choose to spend it either on cosmetics directly or on boosting your progression through the Battlepass.
@siren_atlantica Ehhh. I think it's not unreasonable to at least spend some of the lattice you get from the battlepass itself if you _really_ want one of the skins and are too impatient to wait for more daily challenges to come in.
It's funny because Overwatch's setting and characters are very obviously inspired by comic book superheroes; so much so that I'd argue that Widowmaker has always been a knockoff of Black Widow, ever since the game launched in 2016. It's like if the WoW devs said that Lord of the Rings ripped off the Lich King with its design of Sauron. Like... guys, you're the ones who ripped off LOTR in the first place.
I've never played a match of Overwatch (or other match-based shooter games) before in my life. The mix of super powers and characters I'm familiar with, great looking character design, and Marvel universe is a winning combination and got me to try it and play a few matches today. I like games that don't take themselves too seriously, and Marvel is a good fit for that vibe. Had a good experience and fun time. If they were able to get someone like me to try it, it's no doubt they're doing well.
As a Diamond Overwatch player having played for years since OW1, I really hope Marvel Rivals makes good decisions with hero balance... I don't wanna go back

Rivals really makes me realize how odd it is to buy skins in a first person shooter. I'm guilty of it too in Overwatch (didn't buy many though), but 3rd person shooters let you constantly see the skin purchased, which is FAR better.
Well I think weapon skins are fine for a FPS, even if most games have them for ridiculous prices

This kind of comments are genuinely so stupid. You want 6v6 or not??
@@brycenb2994 they want good 6v6, not a even worse experience for all the remaining players that wanted it to be good
Actually what they did, was they put in 6v6 because everybody was begging for it, but they specifically put in the WORST version of 6v6 as a way to "own" their playerbase.
(Saying this having hit gm in both.)
3. Ow was ruined because of its move to 5v5 detracting from the gameplay that made it fun. (5v5 is way easier and feels more like death-match)
4. Marvel rivals is performing exactly how overwatch started even when ow was a payed game. Issues may arise when balance is more necessary and impactful once the general player base improves at the game. (This is what overwatch failed at e.g. not being able to properly address goats or double shield, the later being an easy fix.)
Overwatch’s balance philosophy failed because they tried to make all hero’s equal when some took no skill in comparison to others. Who wants to play a harder hero for the same value as a brain dead one.

Stacked currencies is a pretttty old mmo tactic thats been around for ages; genuinely decades now
I'm not sure what he means bc u can either earn units without paying through missions or u can pay real money for lattice to pay for skins or the battle pass and the prices he described are way more exaggerated with saying the skins r 35 dollars which just isn't true u can see that when he opens the store so alot of what he is saying is exaggerated or wrong
Seems like a loophole to get around some legal nonsense.
@@vilxxblack2472 It most likely is, since that's part of why most games let you buy currency instead of buying things directly. That, and it helps obfuscate the cost of stuff. My favorite thing is how the battle pass doesnt expire, if you dont complete the last page, you can in season 2 for example
Marvel rivals still number 1 trending on psn, even during bo6 free weekend

The double currency is normal. Paid currency can be affected by things like credit card refunds. This allows the game to put your balance into negative and block you from playing until you buy enough to put it back into positive.
Decided to subscribe purely because when you talked about that tweet you didn’t just rip into him, you said “yeah he worded it dumb in a way that’s pretty funny, but I understand where he’s coming from, and here’s why I still disagree”. It’s so refreshing to see someone treating something like that as an actual human being and not just a strawman to make fun of to say “look how dumb the people who disagree with me are”. It’s the kind of good character that’s always so refreshing to find.
I don't think Rivals needs the kind of collabs Overwatch and Fortnite has. There are plenty of movies and comics they can get skins from
No more crossovers in games, thanks.
Would kill for that scrap metal suit in the first iron man movie
The only collab is the MCU movies everything else will probably be comic book skins or new skin that they make
Imagine akuma from Street Fighters join in the game. 👹
Acti-Blizz: *What are you talking about? Overwatch 2 and Diablo 4 are doing great!*
Grinding Gear & NetEase looking at numbers: *Oh yeah-yeah, sure-sure*
ow2 Is actually doing great, thanks to the 6v6 test
So for overwatch to be doing well it should have the same player count as a marvel game that just released with enormous hype ? Overwatch has around 40k players daily just on steam, this is good numbers for a decade old game.
blizzard employees in the replies persuading you ow isnt dookie
@@ni9274 not to mention steam isnt even the main launcher for the game. People forget battlenet has an insane amount of its players
@thekingofnothing8712 Damn, they finally added the Watch to Over...
Only took them forever, and a little too late...
Now they just gotta add the 2...
I used to play overwatch every day. I will never play it again.
Same
MR = Fun, Passion from developers, No expiring bought Season passes, fair-ish cosmetic prices
OW2 = Overley competitive, broken promises and no care for fans and outrageous cosmetic prices, FOMO
MR epic skins cost $18
OW epic skins are $20
They are basically the same
@@drjamaymay405 Yet, MR epic skin isn't a recolored and the quality can be compared to legendary skins for OW with custom name card, spray and MVP animation tied to it. If anything this makes OW monetization seem much more unfair and predatory.
@@lunadead they already have the concepts made for them tho, ow gotta make their own concepts... also pretty sure we have highlight intros and play of the game thingies no?
@@lunadead the OW epic's aren't recolors.
And they do come in bundles, just like MR.
These two games have basically the same monetization methods.

I didn't think this looked interesting, and then scarlet witch climbed out of the screen. Now I understand
It’s a great game man trust
I rarely shill for games, but it really is nice. If you ever liked TF2 or Overwatch you should give this a try. The art is superb as well.
Funniest thing are Blizzard devs and Overwatch shills going undercover to cry about this game at Steam Forums.
Blizzard got a big double whammy this month with Marvel Rivals dominating Overwatch 2 and POE2 releasing in early access and hitting D4 hard.
Hawkeye's animation is so damn good! it's like it looks like a real person's using a bow. Looks like every animation is designed in 144 fps
Exactly. The competitive scene is cancer, and quite frankly, they should be ignored if Marvel Rivals wants to outlast Overwatch
@@fellow7224 the competitive scene is cancer for every game
Even fighting games are suffering because high level players have shit standards
@@peetsmcgoo5869 Esports bubble has already burst. Doubt they’ll lean into competitive play that much
Meh, some of the changes you’re referring to are so obviously good editions to the game that I’m surprised they’re still brought up. You can’t pick the same characters as your teammates because it’s impossible to balance around and isn’t fun after the first few weeks. Role queue edited because playing with 5 DPS isn’t fun, as seen currently in Marvel Rival’s competitive. So on and so forth
Ayo that winter soldier play at 3:49 was damn good!
🧐👌 It was masterful.
He wasted ult instead of shifting to safety but the pull was nice
@@szymonpilat601 not really because it doesn't one shot
I wasn't sick of the genre, I was sick of games. Overwatch got stale and stagnant - with balance changes being decided by Esports instead.
Sure there were alternatives, but they largely copy the same formula.
Marvel Rivals feels very fresh. So many characters and all of them feel varied, with many IMPROVING the mechanics and designs from Overwatch.
marvel has cool character designs and brand identity, and it has accessible low skill floor mechanics
1:20
I love that the only dips we see in this chart are in the late night, when people go to sleep.
@@Centruzi you can't forget the free skins you can get from the battle pass even if you don't have it and the fact that you can get currency for free
Rivals even allow you to purchase skins with in game currency
Bellular, something you can add to the list of non-fomo earnings: Deep Rock Galactic.
Even before you could just say "Hello I want to battlepass with this years old content" - they threw all the content you don't have from earlier season performance passes into these mission-findable lost equipment things. You just hear a low beeping in the caves, find the helmet, scan it, now you know where the equipment is - dig there, pick up the cosmetic from the pack, and you even got some upgrade resources alongside it too.
Unfathomably based, even before they just turned on the "Yeah you can just replay other seasons now" thing.
Concord defenders are on death row.
The game was just bad. Hero shooters are still on demand!
Is there even a single concord defender? I thought it was just the marketing team trying to save a ship in worse condition than titanic.
16:32 No we don't!
Agreed!!
(Although cheaters are already in the game.)
You can keep the game and the movies separate, apart from like costume collabs, but the game itself won't encourage me to watch their slop movies.
@@StarlightSoda they literally put in ending screens that reference the movies
There is no fatigue. If movie is good like Guardians 3 or Deadpool and Wolverine, they show up.
@johnnymittle Oh wow two good movies after the all the shitty movies and tv shows post endgame 🤣
@@dukeofgotham4311 Loki, Hawkeye, Shang Chi
@@dukeofgotham4311I mean they said there isn't a fatigue which is true people show up for good movies, it's just more in the last few years this covers all media it's been extremely dumbed down and the quality of it a lot worse because now it's just about profit where before yes profit was a thought but there was also more care for what was being made now it's just throw out whatever and people will buy it complain and come again
Eh, rivals already getting played out though. Player counts dropped over half since launch. I dont enjoy it anymore.
I'm really someone that does only like a very few marvel related things. But when I saw the art direction of this game I was like "O k a y I s e e y o u "
I'm also a long time Overwatch 1-2 Player, and man, I haven't had this much fun in a hero shooter for ages. This game absolut bangs in every direction, if they maintain this quality and support, there are great years ahead.
you really cant judge a games success this early into release. the game will very possibly die down very quickly
I lowkey think it will. I hope it doesn't bc it's fun, but like with Overwatch, people will get tired of poor balancing and how awful ranked feels rn
14:47 I don't even think FOMO is immoral, as a consumer, a battlepass that does not expire makes the game more valuable with time.
Deeprock Galactic also allows you to go back and play previous season's battlepasses whenever you want to unlock rewards.
It will be a nail in the coffin for Overwatch if PVE dops
Keywords "used to do" doesn't seem to be the case anymore
Yes, back when they made good games(probably not entirely true)
Anyone who spends it on BP currency has a screw loose 😭
How is this shocking at all? Major IP releases a game in an established game type.
I don't wanna go back
00:05 Concord didn't die. At best, it was a stillborn.
Overwatch’s main issue is the fun has been drained out of the game, not the shop. Bring back player cards, rank borders, and lower the time to kill and players will come back.
