      I've been an amateur clubmaker for at least 20 years now and I've always tinkered and tried various concepts out of curiosity. The golf buddies always give me a hard time. It's never bothered me, however, considering I beat them about 90% of the time it does put a smile on my face

    I have the Chipr and LOVE it. one putting for the first time ever since I can get it so close when just off the green. But I think Ping would argue that long range chips is not what the club was designed for. I'd still opt for my vokey for flighting a 20 yard shot, but the Chipr comes out whenever I'm on or near the fringe. even now, in times I would putt on the fringe, I go to the Chipr now! excellent club and works exactly as advertised

      exactly my thoughts. Perfect just off the green. My first practice session I was holing 20% of chips . Sadly can’t replicate that just yet on the course but it’s got massive potential

    I've been using the Cleveland chipper all year for almost all of my shots around the green and I love it! I also use it for some punch approach shots and find it is extremely accurate. I'd be interested to see you compare the Cleveland and ping chippers side-by-side because they are very similar. I believe the Cleveland is lighter which may address your concern with the ping chipper being too lively. Thank you again for another great video

    Had the Cleveland smart chipper in the bag for a couple of months, had a lip out for a hole in one from 126 yards last week, that would have been an awesome story to be able to tell. Hole in one with a chipper (5 HCP golfer as ref)

    Great review of a club that would help a whole lot of average (and below) golfers. Many (perhaps most) casual golfers struggle to break 100 consistently. Aside from putting, a more consistent chipping game would put them in the 90s far more often and increase their enjoyment of the game. It's time for golf to get over itself when it comes to chippers. We seem to have no problem with all kinds of drivers and crazy a$$ looking putters, but bring out a chipper and , oh my gosh... you're actually gonna use that! Ha!!

    Hi Andy enjoyed your video👍& the one with James with the Ping ChipR, Bought one with a graphite shaft (steel shaft’s sold out), I have a very good short game & rely on it to play to my handicap, However can’t judge pitch & run shots, Now with the ChipR after practicing around the green it’s so much easier to chip it close👌, with the upright lie & shorter shaft & more weight in the head, it’s just so simple to address the ball, everything looks correct leaving you to concentrate on chipping it close😃, The Big plus is it’s a Brilliant club from 100yds,(as James showed) in the previous Video, I think 🤔 this is where the graphite shaft helped me, I got 2deg added to the loft to help me judge the run up’s better👍, Thanks Andy, Dickey 9hcp 75year Senior Golfer

    Best club I have bought this year. It is almost impossible to miss hit. So forgiving and well balanced. It has saved me shots anywhere that height is not an absolute requirement, and can be used anywhere from 90 yards and in.

    A very limited test of the Mazel. There's a video by an American pro (Mr Short Game) where he tests the 45* Mazel and compares with his PW. Like yourself he tested it from various scenarios around the green. However, unlike every other video I've seen on the Mazel, he took the testing to a much higher level. He tested to see if it was a viable option for long bunker shots (not fairway bunkers or short sided bunkers) with a square face & he also opened the face a bit. Very positive results. He tested from the rough over bunkers, successful but ball rolled out considerably. He tested flop shots with an open face, about 50% success rate and if execution of the flop shot is wrong either blading or chunking will occur. He then tested from 120 yards and compared with his PW and again positive results. In fact he stated at the end of the video he would replace his PW with the Mazel 45* chipper.

    I have played the Smart Sole 2.0C since it came out back in the day. Great club from a variety of lies and situations and I loved using and playing that club
    When I first saw the Ping ChipR - really loved how it looks like an iron and wanted to get one to try. Have been playing for a few weeks and I am loving as much as the Smart Sole 2.0C. The Ping does everything the Smart Sole 2.0c does and also looks really good in the bag.
    Both are great and really can’t go wrong with either.

    For a few months now have been using a mizuno ex demo mp58 6 iron bought for £10. Bent the lie upright to near a putter and added loft which also gives more bounce. Cut it down to putter length and regripped, was a good little project and works great for chipping but also for punching between and below trees which my local course has a lot of.

    My biggest issue has been GIR. Since getting the Ping ChipR, it's taken off about 6 shots off my score on average. I highly recommend this to all mid to high handicappers. If you can get over the snobbery and drop the ego, it will definitely help you enjoy the game more.

    Started playing golf June 2021 at the age of 55. Lots of beginner frustrations obviously but by far chipping around the green was killing me. Bought a ping chipper partly after watching yours and other reviews. Overall I have to say that this club has changed my game around the green. Now this could be that I’m a novice and not able to get the best out of the wedges etc but it has made my game less frustrating and more enjoyable👍 Really enjoy your videos keep them coming.

  • @biggregg5

    Here are a few of my thoughts. Mazel I'm pretty sure was a knock off of Square Strike....both are decent quality. If you really want to go slumming and try something that actually looks and feels good with the same concept as these clubs is the Inazone Hyedge. I got mine from Diamond Tour Golf in the US. $15 for the head.
    Here are my thoughts. I really, really liked it with full shots and also liked it with chipping around the green. They also come in 3 lofts.
    Downsides...
    For chipping it has a 310 gram head, but for me Heavy putters and chippers work better. 310 is still heavier than most wedges, but lots of chippers are 330-340 range, and I think that makes a difference. It's got a cavity in the back that you can easily add weight to, but if you're the type that cares about what your golf buddies say, you may want to go ahead and spend from 4-10 times more.
    The other thing is that at least for full shots which I got to some ridiculously good grooves with, because the club is more upright like a putter, at times going back and forth between this club and a regular full wedge or other full swing scoring club, I tended to hit more suboptimal shots. Not always, but sometimes.
    In summary, even though I loved full swing results, for me, probably best to add head weight and use around the green.
    Hope this helps.

    Thanks for vid!!!!

    Good call out Andy on the loft. I game the Cleveland Smart Sole 4 which is 42*. When the ChipR came out I had to try it. But found it came off too low and hot for me. Preferred the Cleveland and sold the ping. If ping had a higher loft option I’d bag it. Especially as I game g425 irons

      Thanks for this comment Jack. I was considering buying a 55 deg Mazel but I too use the Halo Xl irons and after reading your comment I can only agree it won’t be necessary to add another club to my bag. By the way I shot my lowest score ever on my last round simply because I used my entire set of Halos (4-DW). Enjoy 😉 your golf ⛳️

    • @Jack-xy4fy
      @Jack-xy4fy 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Ariacaraleia yeah definitely don't bother mate, pretty much any of those irons could be used as a chipper, I often use the 7 for greenside chips.
      Ive got rid of several clubs since getting the Halos, super reliable. No need for woods, hybrids or the chipper anymore so they are all gone.
      Now I'm just using a g425max driver, the xl halo irons, cleveland CBX2 wedges and the putter.
      Most tee shots I use the 4, 5 or 6 iron.
      The driver only comes out about 3 times a round, even though it goes straight, because it goes long it can still land me in trouble, but the irons will land exactly where I want them.

    Had mine for two weeks. Love it love it love it. It’s so easy to hit pure but looks like an iron. It has simplified my chipping I used to try and use an 8 iron, gap wedge, 54 and 60. Now I get to a chip and I say can I use the chipr or do I need loft? If it’s loft I go to my 60. Only two clubs. I then use my 60 the way Pete Cowen teaches upright like the chipr heel off the ground and use natural forces like a putting stroke. It’s simplified my short game which is making me get closer to the hole. Highly recommend this club to anyone. Oh and I’m a 5 handicap!

    I’ve been playing about 8 months, a mid 20 handicap, and I have both of these in my bag lol.
    Mazel 55 to get me over bunkers or if I need that additional height (i took out my 56 degree wedge for the extra space, relying more on my 60 from bunkers etc), and the Ping Chipr for more chip and run and when I need a lower trajectory.
    Both have their place and for now with my ability will be in my bag for a long time to come.

    I have an Odyssey chipper. My coach wants to snap it. But I just tell him, 1. You can try, I will win 😂 2. Isn’t the object to get as close to the hole as possible. Chipper does that for me.
    I do also use a 9 iron in deeper rough or my 58 if I need loft. Really interesting to see how different the ping is from my current club. Especially as the ping looks like an iron and mine looks like a putter.

    yep a chipper will help. I am old school, wedges and irons for me. It takes practice, practice, practice. However, a chipper would be good for those that cannot practice as much. Try the Cleveland Smart Sole C (for chipper; they also have G for gap wedge and S for sand wedge) and the Square Strike (which is arguably quite similar to the Mazel), Andy. I have the Smart Sole C and am learning to really like it, especially on my course, which has a lot of bare lies. The wide sole just glides right through them, doesn't get stuck like a wedge might, and delivers good contact every time. You are spot on that you need to practice with it, because the face is a bit hot.

    I enjoy your videos, good knowledgable content and very entertaining. As for a chipper, I say learn the correct method, hold the club upright more, using all your clubs that are already in the bag. If it is a shot that requires an 8 iron loft to get on the green and then roll out to the pin, use an 8 iron. otherwise you would need many more chippers with different lofts. The chipper works great for the one shot loft that is required but no so good for the other shots required. One question I have for you maybe its because I am a new member but when you talking about clubs can you please explain what shafts you are using, I would really like to know complete details, like flex, type, ect. and why? Are you all stift shafts ? or different shafts depending on the club? Thanks,

    Prefer to use a wedge for "higher" chips and a high-loft hybrid for "lower" bump & runs around greens - chippers take up one slot in the bag but only have limited use in my opinion.

      My approach wedge was my typical go to for the 100 to 110 yard shot in practice, yet I always manage to fly it over the green in rounds lol. So I took that club out to replace with the Chipr and worked on adding a little heat to my 54 degree wedge to compensate. IMHO, if a club is coming out the bag, I would have to say take out a wedge instead of a wood or long iron for sure since there's more versatility with wedge shots. Just my two cents 🙂

    I have a TopFlite Gamer Chipper and a Powerbilt TPS Chipper and various other chippers from very far back in the day. I have used one since my Dad started teaching me to play when I was 10 years old, that is some 45 years ago. Very similar to the square strike chipper.

  • @willscarborough9089

    The Cleveland has a hotter face but has a lot wider sole which is nice for thick rough. I also like that with the wide sole I can swing down with impunity and not worry about hitting it fat. I was under a limb the other day and needed to go over a large bunker and was able to put the Cleveland in the back of my stance and “punch” it and it came out low and straight but when it hit the green it checked.
    I think any of these clubs will be fine if you get used to the flight and speed it gives you.

    Good vid, thanks. As you state, it will be interesting to see if Ping expands into a line of Chiprs with different lofts. On another note, you mentioned that the ball comes off the club pretty hot. I can't be sure what you were relating it to, but let me assume you meant that it comes off hotter than a chip off a regular iron (that's lighter). One of the things I appreciate about my SS chipper (that I would assume applies to the Ping Chipr) is that, between the higher swing weight and lie angle, it has a feel that's pretty close to my putter (and different from my short irons/wedges). I really appreciate that...I'm hitting my putter on pretty much every single hole during a round, so the feel/touch I need for chipper shots is always fresh in my mind.

    I bought the Ping ChipR when it was first released. I wanted to love it but it was a bit too heavy and I had distance control issues despite holing one during a round. I thought I needed a bit more loft to shorten the rollout distances. Traded the Ping in for a Cleveland Smart Sole C wedge…their chipper. I love it!!! I like the wider sole, the added loft, the shorter length and overall swing weight. It’s becoming my favorite club even though I mostly use it for around the green shots. If I need to pitch something high I’m pretty adept at using my 56* wedge. The ChipR looks like an iron and the Chipper looks like a wedge. Btw, I use Cleveland CBX Zipcore 44, 50 and 56 wedges. So what club or clubs would you take out of your bag to accommodate one of these? As an alternative, why not just work harder on pitching and chipping with your irons, from 7 through the wedges? Saves money, too.

    Here's my issue, I've had the ChipR now for 2 weeks and have been out to the range multiple times and played 2 rounds with it. I can't chip with it, not like I can a wedge. I'm really on using it to pitch. At this point I'm thinking about trading it in. Really frustrated.

  • @wallstreetoneil
    @wallstreetoneil 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Golf is NOT a Winner's Game - it is a Loser's Game - i.e. it's all about the asymmetry of your bad holes/shots and not about your good shots; that is, it's so much easier to Double Boggy than to get an Eagle. The ChipR is about eliminating the Double Boggy on your scorecard and converting it into a Boggy or potentially an up&down for Par. That is why, for everyone not on Tour, this type of club is almost a no-brainer.

  • @daveboehne907

    Chipper clubs confuse me.. always been interested in them for around the greens but 70yrds out why not just hit your 60deg and fly it to the flag? Seems more risky to try and bump and run it from out there?

    • @johnmay9598
      @johnmay9598 ปีที่แล้ว

      First of all, these things are really more designed for inside 50 yards. From 70, where it's basically a full but soft 60 degree shot (for me anyway), that's what I'd hit. But from 40ish, basically the chipper eliminates the possibility of thinning it over the back or fatting it short, and eliminates most of the risk of going off line from opening the club face. You just have to worry about weight, and as long as it gets to the hole it will be rolling and have at least a chance to go in. The course shown in the video looks very links-y with a very undulating fairway, so the use case is far more questionable there, but in North America that's obviously relatively uncommon.
      It's worth noting that at exactly no point in the video does he hit the thing the way it's designed to be hit. Every shot is full of wrist action. You CAN use it that way, especially when you're far out, but a putting stroke is how it's supposed to be used.

    That Mazel just looks like a Square Strike knock-off. The whole idea of the Ping ChipR is to remove some of the negative stigma of a chipper because it's high quality and from a premier club maker. Defaulting to the Mazel just brings us right back to the old chipper stigma. Just sayin'.

    Great video. I’ve had a chipper in the past but it was so clunky & although it definitely helped, I wanted to develop my game without it. Now I mainly chip with my 9i and become good at it. That being said, this Ping Chipr is on my radar as it looks great and is built for around the green bump n runs. I think most of us would benefit from this.

    Sorry but a chipper is supposed to be "chip and run" club. So a loft at around 40 to 45 degrees should be sufficient. You don't need a 55° club for this purpose. You don't need to send the ball up in the air for chipping around the green!

    • @johnmay9598
      @johnmay9598 ปีที่แล้ว

      The only benefit I can see is for reliably popping the ball over greenside bunkers. You can't use a 40-45 degree chipper for that unless you have a lot of green to work with on the other side.

      @@TheAverageGolfer no, it makes perfect sense. You are comparing two different clubs. It’s like saying a sand wedge and 7 iron are different. Really? We know that and you don’t use them for the same thing. The Ping is an excellent club for shortish green side chips without obstacles. The higher lofted Mazel is obviously gonna be better for more lofted shots and clearing obstacles. Maybe you should have compared the Ping ChipR with the Mazel 36°. That would make more sense. Surely?
