I picked up the Cleveland Chipper after watching Andy test drive the Smart Sole G wedge. So far the 4C has been not just a chipper but a great utility club all around. Off the fairway and rough, out from under trees, fairway bunkers, pine straw, you name it. Thanks Andy!!

I’ve had the ping Chipr since its release. I’ve really enjoyed it. As a higher handicap player I believe it gives me a greater sense of confidence standing over the club . I’ve holed about 7 longer chips using it, while I never had before using a wedge or another iron. So I am a believer. Keep up the great videos

I also picked up a chipper this summer. I am not saying it is any better than a 7-9 for chipping, but I like using it better than any other club around the green. It is about what you like.

I love my ping Chipr and find I can use it longer then the 40 yards. I have started messing with 3/4 and even some full shots. I wouldn't play the chipr on any full shots yet, but more of some 3/4 punch have been very good for me. My 3 putts in my 21 rds with it my 3 putts are fewer by almost 50% playing it vs vs the 20 rds before. The fact I can know about 50% of 3 putts and still can't break 80 tells you why I needed a chipper in the 1st place. I picked it up after your 1st or 2nd video. 100% happy with it!!! Thank you for really putting gear to use and testing the clubs the 80% of most golfers need!!! I'm really ready to drop my 4 iron and put a 9 wood in the bag. I'm left handed and can't really find any ones for sale or would even makes them for lefties anyone know please repose thank you.

I order a Ping Chipr shortly after seeing your first video about it. And I am not one who often buys the latest and greatest golf equipment (my irons are over ten years old). I agree with your assessment about the weight of the head and the upright lie allowing for more consistent swings and strikes. For someone like me, who has limited practice time, using a single club for chipping reduces decision making. And I think that improves consistency.
The only place where the Chipr struggles a bit is in thick Bermuda grass. I need the extra loft of a gap wedge or 56 degree to get the ball up and out with consistency.

Adding the ChipR has made a significant improvement to my game, but in unexpected ways. First, I had to pull my 4i out of my bag to make room for it. That was my most unreliable club in my bag and by removing it has saved me at least one stroke every round.
Second, punch shots when I find myself in trouble. The ChipR is the perfect tool for this as the launch is soooo consistent and so easy to determine the direction of flight, subtract one more stroke from my score per round. And then there’s the reliability when chipping…
    Win win win.

Recently bought a Cleveland chipper and replaced my 52 degree. But after one of your videos and one of Crossfield's and my own observations, I dropped my 3 wood. I have a 5 and 7 wood and the 3 was not better than my 5. So now I might put the 52 back for some lo ger pitches.

I currently play to an 8-9 HCP and carry 4 wedges, and I'm rather good with all of them. I play public golf courses, some are better than others. Yet very few have nicely groomed fringes around their greens. Most of the mowers just drop the mower deck down one level and that's about it for "the fringe". Some are impossible to putt over. Previously for Chip & Runs I would utilize my irons (9-5) depending on the circumstances. Unfortunately due to playing them heel up & toe down, too often the toe would grab the tight lie ground or the fluffy turf - costing me strokes.
So I purchased the Ping ChipR. On the 3rd hole of my first round with my ChipR I chipped in from 30 yards for an Eagle. On the back 9, I chipped up to within 2 feet for an easy Birdie. My second round using the ChipR, I chipped up for another easy Birdie. During my third round I chipped up close enough for three Birdies! My ChipR will be in my bag for a long time!
People seem to push back asking "What club are you going to take out of the bag?" Since I continue to utilize all of my wedges - I took out my 5 Wood. I can somewhat replace those limited shots with my 4 & 5 Hybrids. My 5 Wood cannot lower my scores like this ChipR has!

I have the Ping ChipR. Reason: I live in Arizona. Around the greens, we have nothing but hardpan, and I mean sparks flying off the bottom of the club hardpan! The ChipR club head is quite heavy as the video stated. The face is a bit hot and takes some getting used to. However, the shot goes straight around the greens! Like video stated, I too have had more hole-outs and short putts than in my previous 50 years of playing.

I enjoy the channel. I added a Cleveland Smart Sole 4 C Black Wedge with Graphite Shaft to my bag based on some of your videos. I decided to remove my 3 wood from the bag to make room for this club. I'm still learning to hit this club correctly but I believe that it has helped in reducing my handicap from 17 to 13 at my home course (or is it because I removed my 3 wood ?). I've definitely holed more chips than I have in the past. Thanks again !

I've been using the Ping Chipper since July '22. I was always a good chipper in the past, but this past season and a half has turned me into a great chipper. I've chipped in more times than I can count, and have saved par more often. I have gotten so good with it that I've made birdies from short sided chips out of the rough. The Chipper was a great trade for my 58 degree. Never very good wit the 58 and don't miss it. I let my wife us it and she's enjoyed that golf club so much she wants one for Christmas.

Glad for this insight Andy. I purchased a Smart Sole C last year on your suggestion and have been pleased with it except for the high 40+ degree loft and the fairly light swing weight. Played a friend’s ChipR Last week and liked it. Lower loft than the Cleveland and heavier swing weight while maintaining the same upright lie. I also found the sole on the Ping superior to the sole on the Cleveland since it is more like my other wedges. Ordering a ChipR today. Thanks!

I finally received my customized version, 1" long blue dot (1 deg upright), initial testing is positive, I used it on maybe 50 ships using range balls from a variety of lies and had really good success with it. Now I need to get it on the course. That heavy head worked VERY well for me for getting balls out of deep grass rough, it was even rather wet as the area around the chipping green had just been watered. I can't wait to see what happens when I get it on a course here in a couple of weeks.

Hey can I just ask you (or anybody who has had a custom one) how you determined your adjustments? Desperately want to order this but can't seem to get any good advice on what to do from anywhere. I play G400 irons with a Green Dot + 1/2 inch on the shaft. Do I just get the same? Or just add the length and keep the standard lie? I'm 6"3.

    I love my Ping ChipR
… I totally agree with your assessment. Yes, I can chip with any iron in my bag, but I will occasionally duff one, hit one fat, thin … but rarely do with the ChipR. I like setting up with it (more upright), and a more straight back & through stroke (more like a putting stroke).
It still takes some practice to manage distance control, but if I focus on the landing spot, I am much more successful using the ChipR than other clubs. I’m sold on it. 👍🏻

Perhaps a comparison with a traditional chipping club, such as the sand wedge, might be enlightening. As you stated, the weight of the Chipr makes it quite different than a 9-iron, even though the lofts are the same.

Bought the Cleveland smart sole chipper years back, never made it in my bag but recently got on with it as I play less and I don't have the confidence now with the variety of shots I used to use. The chipper offers a no fuss simple action thats quite accurate but doesn't offer the range of shots (longer with less rollout) but I think I can use the pitching wedge and just removed the 52%, overall a good result and stress free chips around the greens.

Your presentations and everyone’s opinions I really do enjoy. 😊

The "heavier' club weight is exactly why I encourage everyone to play 130gram shafted wedges for around the green - and never use a lighter graphite or steel shaft in the club you're going to pitch & chip with - the loss of feel and control is the worse mistake you can make. I've found that when I've helped people around the greens that the higher the handicap, the more important this is - I've passed on my heavy 'pro' wedges to my partner and she loves them.

I found some of the comments below interesting--several people like this club for full shots (huh?), several people like to chip with sand and lob wedges (apparently when they are just off the green), and one commenter says "the ChipR runs out at least as far as it flies if not further." Well, that's what chippers are supposed to do! Seriously though, I've noticed what seems to be a semantics difference between US and UK golfers: In the US, a shot with more roll than "air" is considered a chip, whereas a pitch is more air than roll. The UK TH-camrs seem to consider any close-in shot--even dozens of yards away--a "chip," even if it is highly lofted.

8 iron to me has holed many shots of the green within 30 yards of the green, these days I can home in a 60, 56, 52, 48 or the 45 degree wedges.
Would I give this to mate starting golf, YES I wish i had this starting out.

I actually feel more confident chipping with my 54 and 60 and they both perform much better than the ChipR. The distance control is just more consistent for me and my course requires popping the ball up 90% of the time for chips. I’ve also found the ChipR runs out at least as far as it flies if not further. It’s very situational and probably not much better than just using a putter if you’re on the fringe. I’ll probably be selling it.

I play off 8 but have an unreliable short game. Bought the Cleveland 4C. It has been a revelation. Never thought I would be using it from so many places: short chips, from the rough, difficult shots on the verge. Had to think of a club to take out the bag to make way for the chipper. To my amazement, I found the chipper effective and easier to hit from 80 yards and it has now replaced my 54 degree wedge. Amazing club, I think it will easily shave 1-2 shots off my handicap.

I am trying to change my gapping so I can add a chipper. So with putter and twelve other clubs, I want to spread the gapping and lofts so that there are four to five degrees difference in loft between the other twelve clubs with good gapping of ten to twelve yards. So, essentially creating a bag of thirteen clubs plus chipper.

I've been playing the Cleveland smart sole chipper all year. I especially like the uprightness of the club. I have also been using it for 60 yard approach shots. The uprightness of the club allows me to be much more accurate. You used the ping chipper from 150 yards. My experience with the Cleveland chipper has caused me to wish that a whole set of irons could be made with the same short shaft and upright lie

    • @Alan_Edwards
      @Alan_Edwards ปีที่แล้ว

I have a Cleveland chipper as well and agree about the versatility - not at all like using a 9 or 8 iron which I used to do. Much easier to hit it straight versus using an iron. Plus the sole design is what sets it apart from other chippers like the Ping model. I would not give up a club in my bag for one that is not much different than a less lofted iron. Now I do all my short game work with my chipper and 56 degree wedge no problem. Oh and I also have a Smart Sole GW which is very forgiving and versatile too.

I was ready to get the ChipR, but at the moment it would take like 8-weeks to get. It's a real bummer! By the time I'm able to actually get one, I might not even want it anymore. The question this keeps bringing me back to is, why don't we play really upright clubs throughout the bag? The vast majority of golfers miss right, an upright lie angle will help counter that. I've seen many a reviewer hit the chipr on a full shot and they're all amazed by how accurate it is. I'm yet to see anyone connect the dots and see if it works throughout the bag.

It’s not foolproof, if a high handicaper can’t chip I’m willing to bet there are errors in their grip or setup or both that would lead them to chip just as poorly with the Chipr. It’s like when a review says that a set of irons or a driver are “so easy to hit it’s almost cheating” but they aren’t if you’re doing it all wrong!
At £150 I’d say watching a few TH-cam vids on how to chip (or even a lesson) and then a few hours on the chipping green would be a much better option.

So instead of the common four degrees of loft between clubs, change to five degrees difference for a few clubs.

Maybe a waste of time for some, but for many who don't play that regularly they are a go to or should be.. I replaced my lob wedge with the chipr, closer to the pin than any of the club's you mention on a v regular basis - it just makes the shot with the same ease as when I had time to practice lots with traditional wedges - I now open my sand wedge if I want to 'lob' one... The only thing not to like about the ChipR is that damn name!!!!!!
It's the sort of name that a pimply adolescent would come up with and think was REALLY COOl, whoever came up with it in the PING Marketing dept should be shipped back to TM (where I'm sure that they came from).

That chipr seems brilliant, especially for mid - high handicappers

It may not be over-rated, but for 1 single “iron” club it certainly is overPRICED. By a good $90-$100. But nothing by Ping is cheap …granted, and there a lot of people out there that when you figure what a single club is worth out of there more expensive sets of irons they do not run that high at all for 1 club. I think the price is crazy, as other companies put technology into their chippers to and they are nowhere near as expensive. If you’re rich or sponsored and can play whatever you want then great it’s a nice thing to put into the bag if you can figure what club to pull to make room for it, but for the average person and I am in Canada to pay out $250 plus taxes for one single club to go in my bag is not going to happen.

It’s not possible to get the ardent golfer to use a chipper, it will never happen. Until they realise it won’t hurt their game.

@@TheAverageGolfer I am certaintly enjoying using this club as i have enjoyed good results from awkard sitiations around the green and a little further away. It simplifies the chipping by using a putting style with the aide of a heavier clubhead. It is no means a miracle cure because you can hit bad shots from time to time if you become too overconfident with it. The more i use it the less likelihood is that these shots will occur which gives more confidence than say a 8 or 9 nine as you only have one loft to be accustomed to.

Is this a joke? What a waste of a spot in the bag for a one trick pony.
Choose the alternative: Take lessons and learn the proper techniques for chipping and pitching, and learn how to chip and pitch from various lies and conditions. Then practice the short game. Your game will be more versatile and better in the long run.
