  • THE TRUTH: Square Strike Wedge Review
In this video Rick Shiels PGA golf professional heads out to The Worsley Marriott Hotel & Country Club to put the Square Strike wedge to the test to see if it can really improve your golf!
You may have seen the commercial that states the Square Strike wedge will improve your short game and help you to play better golf. Is this this case or would it be a waste of your money? Will you stop hitting shots fat, stop duffing and stop shanking your approach shots?
You may have a Titleist Vokey wedge, Cleveland Golf wedge, TaylorMade Golf wedge, Callaway Golf wedge, Mizuno Golf wedge or a Ping Golf Wedge.
Will the Square Strike wedge help you to play like Tiger Woods, Brooks Koepka or Dustin Johnson?

Rick's review of this club was fair and overall positive so why all the ego driven negativity by the " I wouldn't bag this if you paid me" brigade. It's just a super forgiving PW and may well help the average golfer. Maybe we should all go back to using traditional lofted blades and ridicule people when they turn up with their game improvement irons!

Rick this club is amazing! IT has taken a few strokes off my game. This is my 3rd year of golf my short game was the last thing I have been trying to learn. For the last couple years I have learned to hit Irons and wedges at full power anyway, I used to be the guy that flew the green then flew it back the other way with my wedges. I picked this club up and now I dominate my buddies around the green. They fear the green machine and I use it every hole it seems. I def feel out of all the clubs I have purchased I use this one the absolute most and LOVE IT! I freaking love this club and so do my buddies I golf with when I let em use it.

    G’day Rick,
I’m a 51 year old Chopper from Australia who has taken up golf again after a 20 years.
I’m on way down as far as golf goes now and I play for pure enjoyment, I play with my step son Jack who is 23 and just starting out and showing good signs of being a very good average golfer.
I purchased this square face wedge and I immediately dropped at least a half dozen shots a round.
I don’t hit many greens in regulation and it has just added more enjoyment to my game.
For people like me this is great club.

Rick, I REALLY REALLY HOPE you read and respond to this comment. I'm in the US and you are right--the ads for this are EVERYWHERE, ALL THE TIME. Here's why this works for a lot of people: the ads say to use a back-and-through putting type stroke (by implication, pendulum swing with no wrist action). Well, ANYONE becomes a more consistent bump-and-run chipper with ANY club and lots of green if you can do that. That was partly validated by the amateurs you featured in the video--their swings were anything BUT straight-back-straight-through, pendulum, no-wrist swings, and their results were horrible. There was ONE swing that finally looked like that, and it was a decent result.

Hello Rick! Thanks for all the amazing insights on golf clubs. However, I have two requests. One: there is a putter that stands up on its own to help with alignment. It’s called the s7k stand alone putter. Two: I would love it if you started to review some slightly cheaper clubs that are more for recreational golfers, such as the Callaway X Series clubs. Thank you!

I have one of these and I use it all the time. I was sceptical when I first got it. I decided to try it as I have a habit of blading my shot across the green with my sand or lob wedge. This takes care of that problem. It works great in almost all situations upto about 40 yards out. Only situation it doesn't work when you have to lob it over a bunker and have very little green to work with. If you don't have the time to practise and become an expert chipper get one of these.

Over 18 holes, that just means that they save a stroke every three holes. If using this club helped them adjust something about their technique for chipping in this kind of shot, that's totally realistic. Doesn't mean they couldn't have saved the same six strokes with more practice using their original clubs.

    • @tmo4330

Yes, I have the same number of putts per round as a 5 handicapper!!! It's because I chip the ball so close to the hole. I have had 3 chip-ins during my last 2 rounds. Chippers don't work for everybody. They work for me. I am 64 years old. (It took me about a year of practice to really get good at it).

I used a chipper back when I was golfing alot and all I can say is that they are extremely easy and consistent. Not for pros though as you said because you have the skill to use other clubs with better reliability and control. I don't remember what degree mine was but I could be extremely accurate with it from anything from the outside of the green to about 90 meters. It wasen't really anything I really needed but I just liked using it, I was decent 17 HCP player and played for about 17 years. I could use other clubs for those shots but the chipper was just the most reliable. But as you said it also needs alot of green since backspin isn't gonna happen with that thing. But it's solid option for many, especially if you have trouble with you close-game.

thanks for the honest review. I play the 45 and 55 degree squarestrike and I love them. I was terrible with my wedges from 50 yards and in, but with these two clubs I may not be tap-in but I have a chance. Like you said, if you have a good short game these aren't for you because you don't need them. The shot you demo'd over the bunker with the 45 was difficult, but if you do that same shot with the 55 or 60 it will flop and stick!

I bought the 45, 55 and 60 degree square strike clubs. I Couldnt wait to try them at the practice green. The results are astounding. I hit over 80 balls out of the bunker and less than 5% i didnt get out. 95% success rate. I hit behind the bunker and 100% success rate of not getting it into the bunker. The pin was only 20 yards away, and none of the balls were too far away either side. The 55 degree one is my favorite and as the short gameis my weakest i can easily expect to knock off 5-10 shots from my round, which will take me from a 23 handicapper to a decent handicap golfer. I can't wait to try it on the course. Fir the price it is a no brainer. How mucj time and years would it normally take to knck 5-10 shots off your round. My driving and putting are my strongest part of my game but i think i will know have an all round game. Best money I have spent in years.

Great review, Rick! Almost every chipper I've seen reviewed pretty much comes with the same limitations as this one. They're all good if you've got alot of green to work with, no bunker to shoot over, and not in thick/heavy rough. I've tried multiple chippers, but they just aren't versatile enough to be in my bag. You're average public course in the U.S. generally aren't manicured enough to make it worth having a chipper in your bag. (I'm a 14 handicap).

Good review, I've seen this advert a lot, and always saw it as a gimmick to make someone rich off the vunerable. The other one I would love to see you review is the c3i and/or the Callaway sure out bunker wedges, both claim to get you out the bunker first time with no drag in the sand 😉

My dad thinks he knows everything about equipment, so he bought the 65* C3i. He sends that thing straight up in the air because he tries to help it a lot on every shot. I keep telling him he needs to de loft it, but he just keeps trying to flop it. 1) It's got a big ass sole so flopping it either blades it or you get lucky and it goes up with an 85* launch angle. 2) Why the hell do you need to flop a 65* club?

I found the Callaway sure out for $5 in a donation bin so of course bought it. I consider myself to be a pretty decent but not great bunker player but this club wasn’t it. Unless I’m using it wrong. But I do enjoy using it for flop shots around the greens.

I dread having to chip around the greens, I have the yips and always chunk it, feel myself getting very snappy and quick when hitting through the ball so would be very interested in a lower degree in this as the shot I hate the most in golf is chipping over a bunker into the green, always wanted to see someone review this and not by someone trying to get you to buy it and telling you everything you want to hear. Finally, someone I trust giving this club a review. As someone who uses a 8 iron bump and run but not from as far out as you were ( typically a few feet off the fringe ) it interests me if I could use that as a bump and run from a bit further out. From that position you were at I’m typically using a 60, but seeing you chip some balls up there with ease within 5 feet of the hole is very interesting. I also haven’t broken 100 yet ( playing less than a year ) so possibly it wouldn’t work as well for me as it did you. Love the content Rick, thanks for always being honest and overall a good mate. i play a links course full of really tight lies around the greens and so put this club in my bag about 5 months ago. took a bit of getting used to and as Rick points out you only play it when you have lots of green to work with, but it has helped take 6-8 shots off my handicap as I can chip most shots to within 6-8ft of the hole which has pretty much eliminated 3 putts from my game.

  • @carlbowman984
    @carlbowman984 5 ปีที่แล้ว

When I’m not using a pitching wedge for lift around the green, I always use a 7iron, absolutely spot on as it works the same way this square faced chipper does, I can get under the ball with duffing it and at the same time keep it low, bump and runs shots are perfect, 7iron around the green has help me massively improve my putting game, I aim to get within club length to allow not more than a 2 putt. Simples. Great video too Rick 👍🏻

Honestly I think it’s a good thing. No single digit handicap is going to use it. But for people, especially older people, it could be a really good think. No one will ever hit a full shot with it. I think it’s important to remember that single digit handicappers, while many of the people that consume Rick’s content, are a vast minority of players in the world. It’s a club for 20+’s around the green, and it can be effective in that.

Rick, finally an honest review of a club. Most of the time I'm a skeptic when it comes to club reviews by a pro like you because your skill level allows you to strike a ball well with a barn door. So, I was very glad to see you put this club in the hands of some amateurs. I wish more pro club review videos did this. This shows the club's real value to the players it was designed for.

It's hard to tell whether this club is OK or not. Rick can make it work well but then again Rick's proven that he can hit well with nearly anything that's put in his hands. I swear Rick could play a round with a hockey stick and do fairly well. The amateurs that Rick chose to try the club tried their best but they clearly weren't using the recommended pendulum swing. They were all wristing it in an attempt to get the ball up (It's not their fault as it's not at all fair to compare Rick's ability to adjust his swing to their attempts).
My only takeaway from this is that Rick's a pretty damn good golfer but then again I knew that already. :-)

  • @tomseim
    @tomseim 3 ปีที่แล้ว

A friend of mine bought one of these. After a while, I noticed that it was no longer in his bag, so I asked him why. His answer: while this club worked well at one shot, it didn't do the other kind of shots he required. So, he was effectively down to 13 clubs.
The pendulum stroke you demonstrated can be done with any iron, but it does require a little practice. I regard it as essential and practice it before every round.

I own this club. I ordered something else and it was shipped to me by mistake. They never sent the return packaging so I put it in the back 1.5 years ago and have never taken it out. Once you get used to it, you cannot miss with this club. Even terrible strokes end up 3 feet from the cup. I was 50/50 around the greens before I started with the square strike, hitting thin and chunking. This club gets rid of the yips and takes you from a shot you have little confidence in and gives you a ton of confidence around the green. It is not for every shot and it takes about 15 minutes on the range to figure it out, but if your handicap is in the teens or higher, you will use this club all the time and love it.

Coming back to golf after a 30 year break, figured it would maker life a little easier around the greens. I suppose it has and I don't regret buying it. My short game is still crap, due to lack of time around the practice green. Like others here, I would love to see how it goes when you hit the hell out of it on GC-Quad. I have tested it in a variety of ways and have found that you can get elevated shots on the green as well as hit it out of a bunker. In addition, with some practice, you can hit it out of deep rough as well. All things considered, for me it was money well spent.

I do chunk, flub skull ,shots from time to time and this can ruin a good round easily. I bought the club from Amazon, thinking I would try it and if I didn't like it well, easy return. I took it for a round, practiced about 10 shots and played . Wow! I was about 6 strokes better than usual, almost broke 80 and would only want one shot back with it.
