    Love the ChipR: upright stance and heavy head. I've been on a run of rounds in the 80s but thought I'd blown it last Friday. 19 over after 17 holes (par 72). Par 5 to finish and can't quite reach in 2. Left myself 60ish yards and used the ChipR. Hit it nicely - landed on the front of the green and saw it roll over the ridge and looked to roll off the back of the green. Wasn't there - it was in the hole! Eagle on the last for a 89! :-)

      It's 100x more satisfying to chip with an open 60 or a 7-iron bump and run. Making golf difficult is more fun than fixing your game with gimmick clubs.

    Love the ChipR! I'm HC 28. Only had it for a week now. Practiced 100 balls with and it felt immediately natural. Did 2 runs with it and I'm certain it already saved me several shots. Any between 0 to 30 meters from the green has become a no brainer. The only time I need to take my wedges out if from or over a bunker with a short landingzone. But even then one time I just used the chipper to go around the bunker. Because the choice between a hero-shot that succeeds only 50% of time and a no brainer chipR that gives me a long put, I'm always taking the chipr + the long put...

    I've been using the chipr for 6 month now, its magic. This single club has helped me bring down my score more than all the other clubs put together. It’s s certainly not a one dimensional club as he is mentioning in the video, you can have a variety of shots if you know how to use it. I agree that its a bit hot off the face but if you play a low spinny punch shot, the ball stops on a dime.

    I love mine! I didn’t particularly struggle with chipping and was quite adept at bump and running with 7-PW. However…since putting one in the bag, it just takes all the multiple choice out of it green side. Just seems to help me focus and commit to the shot. Every one turns their nose uk at it, then tries mine, then inevitably get off their high horse. More than a few have even ordered one very soon afterwards.

    Bought this last year after watching your original review, nice to see this follow up. It has made a great improvement in my game and I am more confident on short game around the greens. I do wish Ping would put out a 55 degree or so model for popping up shots over bunkers and water etc. I found that with its longer grip I can grip way down and handle those short side chip pretty well.

    So I've been playing golf on and off for 30 plus years. I've been back into the game for the last 5 straight seasons. But hear me out. I have taken swing lessons, and I work on that part of my game. I also work 6 days a week. Therefore, I have limited time to practice. So my practice is focused on the biggest parts of my game. The ping chipper, has been a magic club. Not only does it work for me. But it took limited practice to get the hang of. Helped my game greatly. So that part of my bag has 50, ping chipper, and a 56. As a new - high handicap golfer trying to get better - the Smart Sole 4 Chipper from Cleveland has helped me go from consistantly above 100 with a H.I. of 32 down to my current 22.4. and shooting in the low to mid 90s. That said - I've recently had a really nice session with my PXG fitter who shared some great chipping theory/technique with me - using traditional wedges. I am now finding that I can use both techniques and both types of club for certain conditions around the green. I have space in my bag - so the chipper will remain for the time being. I really enjoy hitting it and am really enjoying my other wedges (52 and 58 PXG Forged 0311) as well.

    Thanks for your great videos! Love mine as well, and this club is great for recreational players like myself. Playing municipals in Texas, we have a lot of hardpan on the courses due to the excessive heat and little rain in the summer, which can make it very difficult to hit down on the ball with a full wedge. The ChipR can easily overcome this issue and gives a solid shot to the green within 40 yards. I had mine professionally bent to 40-41 degrees loft which does allow the ball to land softer on greens. If Ping made a ChipR at 52 degrees loft, it would give us recreational players a great weapon within 90 yards of the pin!

    I had the 42-degree Cleveland chipper for a while but have since adjusted my technique and no longer need it. I simply scoot my feet up to the ball and use my GW or 54-degree wedge with a putting motion and I am all set with significantly more height than what this chipper has.

    I got one today. First off, I have a great short game. Back in the old days, I played blades because they were great to chip with. However, modern hollow body player’s distance irons are too hot. I’ve been using my 58° almost exclusively and flying it almost to the hole lately. I replaced my 3-4-5 with a 7 & 9 wood. Basically covers the same range and in theory I can take a few yards off to cover the distance I need. In reality, there is wind and weather that makes a difference in that 185-205 range. So going to those opened a space for the chipper. Today was my first round with this set up.
    On one hand, I didn’t light up the course. On the other hand, not one time did I find myself between clubs in the 185 range and did hit the green from 172 into a 20 mph wind. I had 8 opportunities to chip the ball. Generally got within 5’. I had 3 opportunities to use it on the course getting out of trouble and just punched it into the fairway. I also had 111 yards to a green with no trouble in the way so I hit a bump and run and had a 15’er for birdie. Which I left short.
    For me, having my longest iron as a 6 iron then a 15 yard gap to my 9 wood and another 15 to my 7 wood at the top of the bag and a “one dimensional” club at the bottom of the bag that I can use 10+ times a round is much better than having 3 clubs with tighter gapping at the top of the bag. I was impressed with the results considering the first time even hit it was on the course today. I almost holed that first shot but hit it a little firm. I think it will be a 1/4 flight to 3/4 roll club.

    I watch yours and James Robinson's video's and that got me to buy one. I 100% LOVE IT! I use it from 130 yards out to up to the edge of the greens. The only time I don't use it is in the sand unless it's in the middle and flat. I can make it get loft and spin too once you get used to it. It's pure vanity if you refuse to use a ChipR.

  • @dougierobertson2099
    @dougierobertson2099 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I’ve bought one and find it too fast off the face for accurate distance control beyond 30 yards. I’ll use it for the delicate 30 yards and closer putter style shots and for these it’s a magic wand. I think the weight of the head makes it inconsistent on longer shots.

    Up until five years ago I played a lot; including lots of tournaments. And never needed or considered using a chipper.
    However, I’m now 66; and in the past 3-4 years years I’ve only played 3-4 times a year (whereas I used to play that much weekly). I’m just now back to playing regularly and found my short game was killing my fun and my scores. So, recently I dropped my lob wedge in favor of a chipper, first as simply an experiment. I’m now having fun again and scores are quickly improving, very largely thanks to the no-stress chipper (and not trying to bomb my driver). I use mine on our current winter lies from 50-60 yards in, any situation. I’m in the game now just for fun; and a chipper definitely has helped in that direction. No question it would be my choice in a “Tin-Cup” single club challenge.

    Have a cheap MacGregor chipper and I really like it. Took my 60 degree club out as I never use it. Hardest part for me is, apart from the course, finding somewhere to be able to practice it as much as I would like to. Has certainly helped my game more than it's hindered it, especially in winter's wet then frosty conditions.

    My chipping has always been pretty good, but I do love the ChipR. It suits chip and run UK links golf, because that’s how we’ve always played around the greens. It will only take one tour pro or senior tour pro to put it in their back to dismiss the anti ChipR lobby. Look at how 7 woods are now in the in-thing, yet were dismissed as senior clubs several years ago. Definitely not one dimensional either, I even used mine from a lie 20 feet off the fairway under trees today as the high bounce and low launch suited the shot mush better than an iron or even a hybrid. Would have been interesting to see what Seve would have made of one of these!

  • @ericbradner6986
    @ericbradner6986 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    I completely agree that a Ping ChipR with more loft would be useful. Even like 42-44 degrees would be better. The current 38 degree version just doesn’t go high enough to be useful on non-links courses, in my experience. Even around the green, if you play faster greens, it’s too strong-lofted to use if you’re short-sided.

    When I was younger and played 3+ times a week over the summer my short game was great... now where I don't get out nearly as much it has really suffered. I'm not for or anti chipr right now, but at some point will try it out to see if I can just get more consistent results. It'll probably not be that much different because I just won't get the rep's, but I'm still curious. My cousin used a chipper when we were in our teens and he was deadly accurate with the thing from 100 yards and in. I hated the thing and was just fine w/ my wedges and a bump and run 7 iron around the green.

    I will be getting fitted for new irons, but how do I limit the number of irons to try?
    From your videos, is it just an ego that stops us from selecting the easiest irons?

    It could be very useful for golfers looking to just have some fun and don't want to practice the short game. My problem us the price. They are $300 here is Canada plus tax which is $340. A lot of dollars for a chipper, the cleveland is 50% cheaper.

    I really wanted one but I just use my 9 iron instead . If the used market price drops I’ll most likely have one in the bag.

    Lessons or chipper....I think that all comes down to what's more important in your game? If you play on occasion and not really serious about golf then chipper...if you want to get better then lessons. For me I like versatility and I want to get better...so lessons/proper technique.

    It's another interesting review on this and I have 2 observations. The first is that when you have those difficult shots where you're short sided or you have to go over something. Really good players are trying to get it close, for those guys the child is never going to be the one. If you're not breaking 100 or you're duffing every wedge shot then really, you just need to get it on the green and remove the chance of that soul destroying duff into trouble.
    The 2nd point is that you're the first person that's really mentioned the lack of loft, why hasn't anyone just bent a gap wedge upright and done a video with it?

    Cleveland Chipper is 42deg, and pops better than the Ping around the green.
    I think the Ping is better for Rec players, but if you're trying to convince a Gamer to use a chipper, use the Cleave.
