An ALMOST Perfect Ryzen Ultrabook - ASUS ZenBook 14 Review

  • The ASUS ZenBook 14 with AMD Ryzen 4700U processor is one of the best ultrabooks we've test. It has a super long battery life, amazing performance benchmarks for the 4700U and a pretty low price. But the Zenbook 14 UM425IA release date and limited availability might make it really hard to find and we also found some other problems with the ASUS notebook that make it fall just short of being the best Ryzen laptop of 2020.

    • @VinnyGrant

@@nafisulislam4376 Boy I do wish I was getting paid for it. Most modern wireless earbuds have what, 48 hours of charge in their case, and 8 in the buds themselves. 8 Hours is an assload of time to be using headphones. Even if I manage to drain them down, my BT buds charge an hours worth of playback in like 5-10 minutes. So just dont be a noob and charge your shit overnight and you'll never run out of battery for more than 5 minutes at a time. So... yeah, your sarcasm was actually pretty spot on, it is incredibly convenient. Wires suck.

    • @dewdew80

@@saif7609 It refers to a small board connected to the motherboard, usually by these little ribbon cable things. They're usually used to add more connectivity to a laptop motherboard.
My argument is that if there is room for a 3.5 mm jack on a daughter board, then there is room to replace it with something superior that can still function as a headphone jack, like USB C.
edit: Also the whole "just another dongle to lose thing" just fills me with so much contempt. Either get headphones with a modern connection on them, or be grateful that a company releasing a brand new laptop bothered to include an adapter so you can keep using your old headphones.

Been waiting for this one! Good review man. Just one thing I’m wondering. I’ve seen multiple reviews now where you’ve had trouble with Davinci on iGPU’s and been theorising why it hasn’t been working. I believe davinci is built primarily to rely on GPU acceleration for rendering and as such blackmagic only officially supports discrete GPU’s with 4GB VRAM or more for the application. Some have had success with iGPUs in certain scenarios but it’s touch-and-go with which ones will work since it isn’t officially supported and there is no VRAM for the export. Do you think this could be the issue you’re having? Cheers.

At first, I thought missing that audio jack is a deal-breaker but the more I use it the more I get used to it. Having a dedicated headset for my laptop use I just keep the dongle plugged to my headset so it's not a big deal for me. The build quality is beyond my expectation for the price point it does feel premium. On my unit, Asus includes the RJ45 dongle, the high res audio dongle, and the laptop sleeve. I have a benchmark suggestion related to full cpu load and battery life:
I think a more interesting test than "how long does it last under full load" would be "how much battery does it take to accomplish x task", where the task is something like exporting a video in premiere or transcoding in handbrake, etc.
That gives a more interesting picture of how much battery life you get when you're not just running an endless stress test, but actually trying to accomplish a task like you would IRL.

    • @LILEE376
      @LILEE376 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

Yes, that would be more fair comparison, because the full load power/performance is completely different between two notebook. For example, a Ryzen 4700u on full load does twice as work as a four core Ryzen or four core Intel alternative in a multicore optimised task, so it burns much more battery. When they compare two laptops in this way, they should weight in the finished workload too.

@@nexusproductions2064 Time will only tell though. It's not that I disagree with you, it's also a possibility since they have done it before in mid 2000s. But speaking realistically, the Ryzen is still way much younger compared to Intel's core i series. Disclaimer, I am no fanboy nor I try to defend either side. I just speaking in the perspective of how companies think.
      So back to topic,
The most possible things of why they does seem to "cheap out" on amd is because the track record. in the last decade intel dominates the laptop market, while amd laptops (pre-ryzen) are just bad. So the way those companies think will be they gonna cheap out on AMD's new CPU lineup to check out how thing's going (to see whether if they're going to make any profit) even if their desktop counterpart are in fact a success in recent years. Sadly this also applies to some of their desktop products too like motherboards or graphics cards.
I mean, looking back at pre-Ryzen, it wouldn't strange if most laptop brands still sticking up to Intel. Because , it would be a daring move for a company that have already makes millions of dollars to suddenly 100% invest on anything other than Intel (in their perspective of course). And if that move fails then the loss they could suffer is definitely big. Its only natural that they're cheaping out first. They just chose not to spend a lot of budget on the manufacturing for Ryzen, just yet.
Then, considering how the market (at least in my country) treats and see AMD products quality (both desktop and laptop), they're still known as the old n hot bulldozer cpu mess by some. Even people around me still tends to believe/chose in intel considering their products quality in the last decade. But that also perhaps because my country is a 3rd world, that made the info flows a bit later.

Still can't figure out why on eartg OEMs still try to squeeze in a MicroSD card slot, like if there's no SD card slot ppl are gonna use an adapter anyway

Well if there is no 3.5MM headphone jack people are going to use an adapter anyway.

@@meRyanP The problem is as follows: if you are a photographer (the cathegory of people who uses the microSD the most, I assume) how long do you plan to actively use the MicroSD card slot? 1% of the time on your laptop? Now how long does the average joe use his laptop to listen to music? 10% of the time? Let's say half of that is with wired headphones. See the problem?

Also Is there a cord like having a cord to use wired headphones, is there one for usb because I want to connect my keyboard as well and my mouse. Lastly, I didn't fully get the gaming preformence for rocket league, would you say it's preformence is good like I could play the game and record at the same time?? would it look like the quality rocket league videos?? also can the gaming preformence look good for minecraft, valorant, and roblox??

If you must pick a model between this one and the brand new razer blade 14, which will be your decision? I am looking for replacing my old Acer Aspire s7 and I have felt in love with the razer however I don't want to pick something extremely heavy or bigger from I have been already getting used to carry which is my ultrabook Acer

My biggest issue is the placement of the power button. I wish all modern laptops would copy the convertible design of placing it on the side. I much prefer that for when using docked on a desk. Combining with a fingerprint reader, the way Sony does on phones, would also be ideal.
