    I have an Asus Vivobook with i7 and an MX150. Most of the time I keep the GPU disabled (I run Linux) or on W10 bias the power settings towards efficiency over power. Otherwise I get a big battery run time hit. Like you I got it on sale and it was priced the same as an i5 laptop at the time. Looking back through I'd do just fine without the i7 and GPU and I'll probably shop there or mid range Ryzen in the future. Asus as brand I have no problems with it's been reliable. Nice review thanks

    Hey, Andrew. Thanks for the honest review. It is good to have that level of insight before committing to buying the unit. In my honest opinion, it is quite unfortunate that this unit was not able to appropriately utilize the discrete GPU. I also agree that the placement of the exhaust was rather poor. I have the 4700u variant of this laptop, purchasing a fan cooling pad of any kind will fix the thermal throttling issues that this device has. The large metal chassis acts as a heat sink for the device, and blowing cool air onto significantly drops thermals. When cooling is handled properly this device is a very competent for lighter games and older AAA titles. I am able to play many games at 1080p 60fps low such as: siege and fallout 4. And for games such as fallguys, rocket league, minecraft, civ v, fortnite, and world of tanks will play 60fps 1080p at medium to high detail. Even without the cooling pad you will be fine with most games, although the laptop will get a little toasty.

    Heyy Andrew, please is the zenbook 14 good for 3d rendering.?

  • @123Suryasis
    @123Suryasis 3 ปีที่แล้ว +10

    Hey Andrew, thanks for the in-depth review. Just want to point out the actual reason about the performance deficiency on this laptop and that is not due to LPDDR4 ram. The Ram runs at 4266 MHz which is actually faster than ddr4 3200 and should give a boost to both cpu and integrated GPU. Another thing, LPDDR4X is actually costlier than normal ddr4. It saves power without sacrificing performance as it requires less power to run at higher speed. The main culprit in all these new Zenbook series is the max allowed TDP. While Lenovo laptops allow as much as 40W during short term boost. 25W long term boost and 15W continuous in performance mode, ASUS just capped it max 18W in performance and only 7W in balanced mode, hence the poor cpu performance. It has the Ram speed but due to lower tdp, neither cpu, noevthe GPU can run at higher boost clock speed for longer time to take advantage of the Ram speed. There are cases where the Zenbook with 4700u actually performs lower than 4500u in IdeaPad Flex 5 due to the Power limit restriction.

    • @gantagavin
      @gantagavin 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Suryasis Mandal are you sure? Ain’t the LPDRR4 4266MHz more or less equal to DDR4 2133MHz? Please check your source again

    • @123Suryasis
      @123Suryasis 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@gantagavin You can check your source rather than me checking mine? I mean from where do you get that idea in the first place? Why LDDDR4 needs to be twice slower than a DDR4 Ram?

      @gantagavin 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Suryasis Mandal wow, calm down brother

    • @gantagavin
      @gantagavin 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Suryasis Mandal LPDDR4 is the mobile equivalent of DDR4 memory. Compared to DDR4, it offers reduced power consumption but does so at the cost of bandwidth. LPDDR4 has dual 16-bit channels resulting in a 32-bit total bus. In comparison, DDR4 has 64-bit channels.

    • @gantagavin

    Hey Andrew. The Envy 15 review coming up?

  • @BGeldz
    @BGeldz 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Andrew, I appreciate your review of this model. Thanks!
    I picked this up when it was on sale for $549 a few weeks ago. At that price, I think it's an excellent deal (though the first thing I did was upgrade the SSD to a larger capacity Samsung 970 EVO Plus I had lying around).
    Yes, I wish it had 16GB RAM. Yes, I wish it was DDR4. Yes, it should have USB-C charging (although a $9.00 adapter bought off of Amazon fixed that issue for me). But I am loving the versatility of this thing. It's extremely small and light for a 14", with a screen good enough to do photo editing, bright enough to use outdoors, and it definitely does work for gaming (although not on battery). I've played bouts of CS:GO, Dirt Rally, Day of Infamy, Skyrim, and other games for probably about an hour at a time without issues (and these days, I don't have more time than that to devote to a gaming session anyway).
    Speaking of gaming, that is the one part of the review where I disagree. Andrew states that you "get a little bit of a boost" with the MX350, but actually, the game results presented show that in 3 out of 4 games, you get *double* the frame rate over the integrated Vega graphics. I'd call that more than a little boost. :)
    Again, for $549, when you consider the complete package, I think this laptop is a great deal.

    • @arco718
      @arco718 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      What adapter did you get, I was looking for something that I could use with a battery pack in order to charge my laptop on the go. I was finding mixed information regarding the viability of this option.

    • @BGeldz
      @BGeldz 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@arco718 Hi Kurtis. Search for "Cablecc USB 3.1 Type C USB-C to DC 19V Adapter PD Emulator Trigger 90 Degree Angled (4.01.3mm)" on Amazon and it will take you to the one I bought. Came in 1 day, no issues at all.
      However, if you want to use this with a battery pack, I don't think it will work unless your power bank/battery pack is already capable of charging laptops. What I mean is, I use it with a 65W Anker wall charger that terminates in USB-C and it works perfectly. But if I try plugging in any of my power banks to try to charge it, that does *not* work. (I can use those same power banks to charge, say, my Surface Go or Lenovo Duet, but they won't charge a laptop.)
      I hope that helps. One more thing - if you do buy the adapter, note that the barrel part of it that is inserted into the laptop is slightly longer than the the one on the stock ASUS charger. Don't try to force it in. Just plug it in until you feel some resistance and it will work perfectly well, even though you'll still see a little bit of the silver barrel plug.

    no USB C charging is not really a negative since if they had it they probably wouldn't include a barrel charger and your usb c port would be blocked by the charger. if they had usb c charging + a barrel charger that would be fine

    You can get a DC to PD type C adapter for pretty cheap to be able to charge the laptop via type C with a 65w+ charger. Like 7.00 cheap from amazon, just need the right barrel size of 4.0mm x 1.35mm or the one I bought from amazon was labeled at 4.0mm x 1.3mm. @arco718 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      This laptop has thermal throttling issues under load, I have been gaming on this for a few weeks now and have noticed a significant drop in performance after a few minutes (20~30%). However I found that by using this laptop with a 15-20$ cooling pad, you can completely eliminate all thermal throttling. The only other limitation is that Asus has somewhat gimped the CPU and GPU by limiting the power consumption. Regardless it is still equipped well enough for light gaming on the go and is a great value when you can find it on sale.

    This is on sale right now 8/24/20 $599 BestBuy in the U.S. It must be popular and they know there's a demand for this so it isn't $549 this time sorry guys.

    Hi Andrew...can i ask your opinion. Among all laptop that you reviewed in 2020 (intel & AMD)...what is the best laptop you can suggest me to replace my 13 years old laptop (presario v3000)? I am not a gamer at all and surelly never install any game. Just work, blog, and photo + video editing (light)

      @@andrewmarcdavid I might can crank up to $ 2.200. I think i have to go to intel firstly...since AMD seems a bit difficult here. I am having a habit to use electrical device for long time until i feel that it no longer support my need. So definitelly not the one who replace them every 2 year

    Great work Andrew... Have you considered in the rundown giving a (-) for machines that have soldered in wi-fi, SSD, and especially RAM... It is pretty much a deal breaker for me, and I have read plenty of other comments that others feel the same way. Thanks.
