      I wish there was an option for people to disable live streams popping up in their sub feeds, just do that I could stream, and people who don't care about that wouldn't be bogged down in a torrent of temporary thumbnails. That said, the upload output is going to be way faster from here on. I've been lazy and working long hours, but dedication time!

      I agree I prefer dawn and dusk though I see the flaws of them compared to the past games and the current games. Like Zerodex Dawn and Dusk was my first digimon games and love them, though I do agree on the grind I have beat the game half a dozen times to a point to where I figured out the best way to get Max stats and make your team unbeatable.

    I spent well over 400 hours on Dusk making completely broken Digimon with maxed stats. Absolutely loved this game. I felt it was a perfect on the go Digimon game. Wasn’t too compelling but the grind was never boring. I actually had fun grinding out levels in this, something I can’t say for Pokémon. Cyber Slueth is by far a better game, but the collectathon aspect of it wasn’t as fulfilling as this one, as the fact that Cyber Slueth had half the roster was a major let down.

    • @Caspicum
      @Caspicum  6 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      Yeah, that's a fair point. Cyber Sleuth was more focused on everything but collecting, I think.

    • @renaldisaputra91

    I still believe Dawn/Dusk was the first competent digimon RPG. Direct control, varied dungeons without booby traps, no load times, convenient team-building/battling and access to anime teams. it was THE game, until Cyber Sleuth blew it the fuck out for being a 3D console/waifu simulator

      @Caspicum  6 ปีที่แล้ว +30

      Well DS is basically the same game, but I'd argue it's better, and has a better post-game. I definitely agree though, Dawn/Dusk showed that Digimon can be good, and functionally sound. They just needed to fine-tune it. ENTER: MOTHER FUCKING CYBER SLEUTH BABY.

      @@Caspicum Unfortunately cyber sleuth's progression and type system were so bad I consider them strictly worse than either DS game. Having a JRPG where you need to levelgrind the same span 7 times, and end up with a creature that seems roughly only double the power, coupled with two type advantage systems that do nearly the same thing is absolutely nonsense. It never feels right the entire time, and makes a joke out of grinding despite demanding it of you.

  • @SgtTwilight
    @SgtTwilight 6 ปีที่แล้ว +53

    I've played through Dawn and Dusk many times. At least 3 for Dawn and 6 for Dusk. I love the games, and while I do agree with most of the issues you brought up (the games are time wasters and the plot is...something? Even I never really got what was going on in the plot), I do feel like you were a little unfair in some regards. The game does have some merits.
    First of all, as a Digimon lore junky, this game is very faithful to the interesting mythology within Digimon and is one of the first games to accurately depict the Demon Lords in their true glory, not the watered down version you see in the anime. Secondly, the games were also among the first to ever really add their own mythology and as far as I know, was the first game in the Saga X storyline to introduce the concept of "Sins that transcend space and time", which was a plot point in the end game of Cyber Sleuth. Of course, I can't fault most people for not getting int that kinda stuff...Lastly, the sheer roster of Digimon in this game is immense. Well over 400 with some really cool and obscure picks like Ghoulmon.
    While it's nowhere near as good as Cyber Sleuth, it's miles better then the worst Digimon games which IMO is by far the Ryo Akyama saga. I'm not sure if you played those games but they're the worst games I played in the franchise, and I played most games.

    • @Caspicum
      @Caspicum  6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Chronologically, I've played every Digimon RPG up until Dawn, and I played a few after that, such as RE:Digitize, Cyber Sleuth, and Next Order. I definitely agree that it's better than games like Digimon World 2, 4, and even Data Squad, but the sheer amount of time it wastes undermines everything else it does well. There's a good core stuck behind all the bloat in there, they just need to refine it.
      I'm pretty sure Lost Evolution and Xros Wars use the same base, so I hope they fine-tune it, and make it the game it deserves to be!

    Digimon World Dusk/Dawn (Digimon Story Sunburst/Moonlight) are supposed to be sequels of Digimon World DS (Digimon Story DS) and then they got a sequel on Digimon Story Lost Evolution, which I think would be the only title worth playing out of the 3.
    The Digimon World series are still V-pet based while the Digimon Story series are the RPG titles so don't worry too much about it.

    As the comments below are stating, the blandness of the JRPG formula was (and still is) something that pretty much all users of the games ignored in favor of knowing that you actually can raise tons of digimon. The thing about DS/Dawn/Dusk is this: they’re less true turn-based RPGs and more like an expansion to the virtual pet formula, with the ability to pause and resume later. Next 0rder has that, to be sure, but the ability to dedigivolve at will and yet remain strong due to stat boosts changes the ENTIRE flow of the game. I remember getting Digimon World Dawn, then Pokemon Diamond, and I outright sold Diamond before I got to the elite four. Why? Because the game bored me to tears after having played the previous games in the series. Today, I have Dawn, DS, Lost Evolution, Cyber Sleuth three times (JP/ENG download/ENG SEA region cartridge) (still saving for Hacker’s Memory at the moment), Next 0rder on the Vita, a japanese Xros Loader, a D-Cyber, world 3 on an emulator on my phone, and the 20th anniversary original v-pets. I still play Dawn and Lost Evolution, only rarely returning to DS for some of the different music tracks (digivolution theme being a major favorite). The thing about digimon is that there are two ways they make games, both of which are predictable, and both of which are dearly beloved by the fans of the series. The first way is the v-pet formula, with only forward growth in real time, like the tamagotchi that came before digimon. The second way is the monster collecting RPG format, with digivolution and dedigivolution being the key elements here, and both formats have something in common: the potential for social interaction outside of the game with other fans, which in turn inspires a rather tight-knit community. We know what makes a digimon game, be it the “bland JRPG” or the “pet life simulator.” The flaws in those games, from Digimon World all the way to any flaws in Next 0rder and Hacker’s Memory, are all disregarded because we get to do what we love to do: raise our digimon. This is as close as we’ve ever been able to get to becoming true real-life digimon tamers. To say that because Dawn/Dusk have a lackluster story that they are a waste of time doesn’t really cover it, because you’re not seeing the games as what they are. They’re essentially a pocket server full of digimon you can raise, carry with you, and return to. I should also mention that Digimon World Championship DS is like this as well, and I have two copies of that that I play regularly. Digimon is awesome.

    As someone below said, I loved this game as a kid, but going in the last year trying to replay it is kind of a nightmare. It's too slow, everything almost feels like a hassle to do and it somehow feels worse than the original DS game despite them clearly trying to streamline some features.
    I do wonder if you are going to tackle the Yo-kai watch series, despite those games problems I feel that they are somewhat of a weird blend between things like pokemon etc in terms of tone and combat of Shin megami tensei despite its simple structure.

    • @Caspicum
      @Caspicum  6 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      That's an oddly-timed comment, because I was actually considering covering Yo-kai watch, and not even 2 days ago. I think this is a sign. I just figured out 3DS capture as well, so that might be on the cards.
      Also, I feel the same about Dawn. I played it about a year after it came out and had a great time, but playing it now was one of the worst gaming experiences I've had for a long time. Given that I've played Quest 64 and Aidyn Chronicles in the past year, that's a big achievement.

  • @razorthecurse
    @razorthecurse 6 ปีที่แล้ว +37

    Well, I'll give you some of the criticism as fair, maps are huge, encounters are abundant, and it became a generic jrpg. However, analyzing the game for what it is, is a little different. But I guess we both had different experiences playing through this game in the end. For example, I never used the farm, because it was... well worthless imo. Any stats I wanted to increase I would do so just by degenerating over and over which was honestly a breeze once you got to higher level areas which essentially made grinding nonexistent. What do I mean? Well say you have the agumon family, you train him up to greymon, then degenerate him into agumon and reach the level cap, then into koromon and reach it again. Mind you, it would take like one or two fights to go from level 1 to like 15 and then another two to cap it, so it wouldn't take too long. It might seem like a waste of time, but you gain so many stat boosts from it that grinding stops being an issue really. If you just do the degeneration a few times you're set for the story quests. But, the other problems still stand, repels like in pokemon, aren't a thing which sucks when you're in one area trying to get to the one specific part that has the one digimon you want, or the one species you need. Either way, good thing you didn't play both at the same time, because aside from story and mon choice, nothing was really different. Still, solid review dude~

    • @Caspicum
      @Caspicum  6 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      I didn't mind low-level degeneration when I did get to the high-EXP areas, but even then, it still took forever to get the Ultimates/Megas back up to where I left them. I did a lot of degeneration, and I even had to do one more cycle for the final boss because the difficulty always spikes at the final boss in Digimon games, but that took a good 5-6 hours of pure grinding. I was also very close to getting Omegamon, but had already beaten the game, so figured it was pointless.
      Such wasted potential. I'm so happy Cyber Sleuth and Next Order exist. Imagine doing a series recap before they all came out. It'd just make you super depressed.
      Thanks for the comment!

    • @razorthecurse
      @razorthecurse 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Casp O'saurus yeah I can't blame you since you had to review this, in casual gameplay, like, grinding is something you can do in your spare time. I mean I would do that back when the game came out, but I can see how when you're reviewing this grinding can be fucking annoying~ but I am glad the other games fixed/improved these mechanics. Still though, I wish you would have enjoyed this game a tiny bit more~

    Played this game only twice. Sometime after beating the story on my first playthrough, I realized the dna digivolving that doesn't change form still may increase stats.
    After finding this out i started fresh wanting to see how quickly i could beat the game. I would grind stats by collecting digimon that reached 100% and saving before dnaing for stats. I wasnt too picky i just wanted a net gain.
    I ended up getting paladin mode imperialdramon first. Followed by zeedmilleniummon. And finally i got shinegreymon burst mode. I got zeedmilleniummon because i originally wanted khimeramon and later on stumbled upon him and wanted to get him. I preferred the ruin mode for shinegreymon but i wanted to try do everything there was to do so i got him.
    I think the tournament was the hardest part compared to the optional last area bosses.
    Maxing stats in this game is still easy if you dna digivolve anything will 100% data.
    Seeing this review makes me want to do it all over again on an emulator to speed up the cutscenes and save stating as opposed to reseting the game.
    I don't disagree with your review its just I spent a lot of time on this game and i enjoyed the feeling of achievement while i was doing it.

    i adore Dawn/Dusk, i have since i was a little girl and having just finished Dusk this morning at 56 or so hours, i STILL love it as much as i did in 07 when i got Dawn. it's not perfect, but i don't actually hate the grindy segments. i'm easy to please, usually, when it comes to RPGs anyway, and this game doesn't do a whole lot WRONG, honestly. it looks good, it sounds great, the characters are cute and unique designs, the monsters are memorable, and the gameplay works well. it's GRINDY, but it isn't inherently broken in any way. you won't find a save ruining glitch or a cart bricking bug like Megaman Battle Network 4 had, or anything close to that. i've been playing Dawn and Dusk since 2007 and have NEVER encountered a single glitch. if these games were rushed, they did a damn good job at debugging.

I have 2 cartridges housing my rarer digimon, like the ones that require ridiculous DNA digivolution ladders or breeding digimon with another cartridge. Also, my stepbrother and I used to do battles inbetween key story events before i took over the cartridges, so i have a few good (non-collection) memories with the games.

    I definitely agree the encounter rate was ridiculous. Lower the encounter rate and slightly increase the experience payout, and make the scan data portion happen much faster and this is actually really fun game. Other than that I really enjoy how the Stat system works and how you can train literally any mon to be strong. My most memorable run I used a Gotsumon and Tsunomon to beat Grimmon in the main story climax.

    I really like these games, though the slog of a story reguardless if it gives you more action faster in the long haul in dusk/dawn is why i went back to play DS, which admittedly was missing A LOT of key things for one reason or another.
    Though digimon Lost Evolution came out 3 years after dawn and dusk, that translation is still slowly chugging along because we diddn't get it in english, i cant wait to see if they made core system actually expansive between DS's limited trees n' lack of DNA digivolve without friends and Dawn/Dusk's openness i made a whole game-wide plan with like 7 digimon fusing together that i diddn't even get to complete because the game ended.
    Either way i love these games and im hoping Lost Evolution does abit more then patchwork or slight redo from previous game.
    As a kid in DS i actually hit a wall at one point and ran out of food, having a great depression for a long time where everyone was starving.

    This game was so fucking good. This was the first Digimon Game I ever played and it got me hooked onto the series hard. Everyone's entitled to their own opinion but I was never a fan of the VPet stuff, and this Digimon Story series is what Digimon will always be to me. A solid RPG with a decent enough story and a massive ass digivolution tree that makes replaying the game and going through it different ways super fun. There is a genuine thrill to getting a brand new Mega Digimon and trying it out. I was always more attached to my Digimon in these games than any Pokemon I had, because every digivolution is a new stage, and watching your partners slowly grow alongside you is what I love about these games.
    So, I getcha, without nostalgia, these games are just DS games. They're basically nothing. But I love the detailed spritework, the intriguing story, the awesome music, fun quests, over 300 Digimon and that feeling of being in a Union, and working towards a goal alongside your team, finding more and more out and discovering the truth behind Grimmon will always stick in my heart.
    Plus this game introduced me to my favourite Digimon, the one and only Marineangemon.

    I remember having fond memories of Digimon Dusk and Dawn, but after replaying them recently, I’ve come to the conclusion that they’re both extremely mediocre, if not below average. The encounter rate really was absurd, so I definitely agree there. And to add a nice cherry on top, even if you had an entire team of Mega Digimon, you could still fail to flee from a Rookie Digimon. The characters lacked this one thing that really would’ve been a game changer called, “actual character”. And a fun little tidbit, whether you choose the male or female avatar, the in game text of Dusk will address you as the male character, because why bother making those types of changes? I’m not sure if that stands in Dawn, as I played through it as the male avatar and can’t be bothered to do it again. Then there were the occasional grammar errors throughout the games, which I found hard to believe made it into the final copy. Your review provided an interesting perspective after replaying these games myself, and I find it to be well made!

    I played Dusk and I actually really liked it. It came at a time when I really needed a Digimon itch scratched and I'd hit a Pokemon drought so I wasn't playing any long-form RPG's. I really liked its portability and the mission-based quests really helped with that. I hadn't played a Digimon game before so getting to form my own team of my favorite mons was a ton of fun. The farm was also hella addictive and I found myself using that alot to level up even my mains. Hoooooowever, I never finished it. I didn't up my tamer rank or anything but I did do basically all of the sidequests and oh my god the difficulty curve! I didn't mind grinding but having to grind for a story mission (which was understandable as those usually have a difficulty spike in any game) and THEN have to do the same thing for a sidequest REALLY killed the experience for me. I ended up getting dawn too to trade the few starter Digimon I liked over but I never touched it again once I did that XD

    • @Caspicum
      @Caspicum  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If you've got a Digimon-itch, there's really not a lot of portable choices, so I get that. More power to you! Thanks for the comment!

    • @rosexknight
      @rosexknight 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      No problem! And yeah I did genuinely enjoy it. I'm not as critical a person as some, so most of the issues like story pacing and such were kinda lost on me but the samey layouts for every place ever and the difficulty curve killed it. I also didn't have another game to compare it to, since that was my first Digimon game, and it was coming on the heels of Pokemon Diamnd, arguably the most slow-paced of all the Pokegames, so those aspects probably helped too.

    You know, there is an old procrastination saying: If you wasted your time, but also had fun doing It, then It wasn't really a waste of time at all.
    I mean sure, this isn't the best game on the DS, but It's one of my favorite Digimon game. The music is really epic, the graphics is actually nice looking. I really like the backgrounds and in contrast with It's eternal rival, they had moving sprites before BW and in my opinion they look a lot better. (then again, BW was better at details, like Pokemons closing their eyes, when they were put to sleep, but It was also made three years after these games), I found the story to be interesting and the characters well written. My only problem is the majority of the gameplay. I remember using AR codes, when I was a kid, because I thought It's just the hardest thing ever, but none of the bosses seem to cause me any mental scars, even the Final Boss was easy. Yeah, he had a ton of HP, but he always received more damage, than what he sent to my team.

    Think I should point out, that Digimon DS had a much higher grind. Unless I just got a crap version of it. You had to grind so much more in the first, vs the dawn/dusk ones. They increased the amount of exp you got. Not by much, but by enough it made fighting worth it. The first the exp was equal to the level of the digimon... At least on the version I played. Digimon ds dawn/dusk at least had that on it. I would say they could make it better by have just including a repel item to use. to lower the encounter rate.
    E: Also yes I notice this is an old video. But just saying my thoughts between the two Ds digimon games (Well three, but it is that the digimon ds 2 was put into two games Dawn and Dusk, or sunlight and moonlight. as the Japanese name would say it is )

One that I have beaten at least 8 time haha, I liked the equipment and the menus were not as slow for me as you described them, you are entitled to your opinion but I love Dawn and dusk. This was my first Digimon game (I wanted to play the original Digimon World games, but I didn't have a Playstation or Playstation 2) and I actually liked it. For the first run. I remember grinding all the way up to the Platinum Rank and being completely satisfied, but I set down the game and never went back because I couldn't collect them all because of no way of getting the eggs from multiplayer (let alone understand how to do it). About 8 years later I picked it back up and said "I'm gonna restart it and just see how well it's aged." That was my mistake. Not only did it not age well, I realized just how awkward the game was. That being said I did get back far into the story, but I never finished a second run through at the Platinum Rank. My take away is: It's good for one run. After that, it'll sit on the shelf. It doesn't have replay value to it at all.

      Yeah, it's far from an awful game, but there's so much potential here if they'd just fix a couple little things, it could be a fantastic game. Xros Wars looks like the same thing but improved again, so I might have to *learn Japanese*. :^)

    I remember being super nostalgic for this game in middle school and it was on sale at game stop I think for like less then $20. Everything above silver for me was super easy and only time it was hard was the stadium final level which I just used a cheating device for lol. Now a days I got really bored with it and I thought about trying the new digimon rpgs.

    I think that it's an irony that you mentioned some downsides of this game that already existed in the first game for example the weaponry, quest structure, and menu accessing that you called "almost perfect". For just 9 months of development since the first game, I think for such time and the improvement they made for the game is more than enough. Sure the game is imperfect, but I didn't think they can overcome or even improve some of lacking / unpolished features from the first game. I don't think they can make dozen of new things like new dungeon designs, etc. This is probably the same case as what Hacker's Memory is to the original Cyber Sleuth. Both provides new story to the game, one is a sequel but one other is a side story on the same timeline. They take place in more or less the same universe too.
    Firstly I want to admit that yeah the game is grindy, the difficulty curve is way more than the first game. The encounter rate is as worse as DW3, no repels, nothing. It's annoying that the entering combat scenes are so slow depending on how much enemies you face. The story doesn't make sense, so many human tamer relations that felt convoluted. And the worse of all is they made the protagonist SILENT.
    But I don't think such grinding are bad. Almost all RPG need grinding, especially some other monster-related RPG like pokemon, yokai watch, or any other one depends on the difficulty. Dawn/Dusk only felt more grindy bcos it had the evolve/devolve thing, and lowering any evolved/devolved digimon into level 1 surely increased it. If you don't like grinding then yeah it's annoying as hell. Hence this one can't be recommended for others.
    Don't forget that one of the most effort from this game is to increase the digimon numbers from the only 200ish into almost double of it. It adds DNA/jogress feature which allow you to fuse 2 correspondent digimon to evolve into higher level with better stats also. It also adds armor evolution which is IMO one of very best inventions to prevent higher grinding especially in the first half of the game with its simple and easy requirement (which is sadly toned down in Cyber Sleuth as if it's a normal evo that needs to reach certain level). The battle mechanic has also been improved so you don't need to level up your digimon much to access its signature attack as it's already available since lv1. They also added "defense" command which is helpful and is still being used in Cyber Sleuth.
    It's so much fun to complete the digimon gallery in Dawn/Dusk rather than the first one bcos you need another player to do breeding in order to get several jogress digimon like Omegamon, etc. You can't do jogress guessing in the first game, and can't even access armor digimon. In dawn/dusk you can do it without any problem, just need the right time and correspondent item. And yeah, you can complete all the gallery with just having the other version of the game, without having to attend events to get several "legendaries" and such. Also the difference between dawn and dusk is clear, and is worth for spending both games at once since you can only accesss several places and quests exclusively on dawn or dusk alone also having standalone accessible digimon. Better than buying 2 versions of DS Pokemon game which only having the same content with just different legendary. I can just choose whether to play Diamond or Pearl alone coz they're both the same game contents, no value in playing both at once. And ugghh I'd rather play Platinum rather than those 2 (diamond/pearl), coz it's the most definitive version of gen 4.
    Sadly these gets toned down in Cyber Sleuth, armor digimon are nothing special, going back everytime to digilab to evolve/devolve is annoying. Jogress evolving is more streamlined, etc.
    probably I'm the only one who will say Dawn/Dusk is much better than Cyber Sleuth in terms of gameplay aspect and accesibility.

    The only reason I loved this game so much as a kid, was probably the fact that it was hot off the heels of Diamond and Pearl, and I needed my DS Monster Collection itch scratched some more. Going back and trying to play this game again is such a drag, I usually can't make it past the 2nd dungeon without dropping it.

    i think it's kinda fun, it's mainly just a distraction based game, having many mechanics based around, well, wasting time. i found all those distractions actually kinda soothing, training digimon in the specific habitats as so they can better themselves in specific ways, having a multitude of ways to digivolve them such as through strength, number of battles, or amount of specific experience gained.
    i can see a lot of the issues with it most definitely, and will say that if your not into digimon, or grinding, stay far away from dawn and dusk.
    if you like either of those, give it a shot, it could entertain you

  • @linkzellda
    @linkzellda 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Personally, I have a love/hate relationship with Digimon Dawn, I find that the game battle style is much more fun than the Pokémon games that it's normally compared to. Not only do you need to know the elemental type advantages, but also the placement of enemies on the field. But the downfall of this game is how much you'll be using it to grind up that typed experience for digivolutions. I've spent numerous hours grinding for typed experience for a Digimon just to find out that that the Digimon is too weak once it digivolves, and has to be degenerated to get stronger. Which means you will have to level up, evolve, level up, devolve, level up, evolve, level up, devolve for hours to get that Digimon you want.
    It is the only way to effectively gain stats in the game, and yeah, it works to increase the amount of time you spend on the game, but it also makes it needlessly frustrating. I don't like having to degenerate my Digimon and digivolve them all over again just so that I can raise my level cap high enough to reach the next stage. The other issue is complete lack of any map in the game which it is easy to get lost since there are not map to tell you the location of your destination or to show you your location, and every zone is a frustrating maze full of dead ends to nothing and finding items or NPCs necessary for quests can be hair ripping frustration with a ridiculous encounter rate.
    I also hate the farm island, its more base in luck if your Digimon success or not but anyway, I just think the game could do better.

    • @renaldisaputra91
      @renaldisaputra91 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      the luck thing in farm island is only for training aspect. It's optional to do, as you can always raise its stat by level up. The worse thing with that luck training was in World 3 where your TP is limited and your digimon can't level down.

    i LOVED this game growing up. And i have no idea why. all the things you said where definitly true. But, i guess since i had my DS on me everywhere, i just ended up playing it nonstop. I didnt care for the story, i was a kid afterall. But i was still drawn in, i played every single starter deck line up, did my own variation of nuzelock for it in which if one of my digi's died, i couldnt grind back up for them. that whole line would be inaccessable for me. ever. It was such a fun time waster for me, even if the game itself was indeed absolute sukamon.

    I think this game's biggest strength is that it finally fixes the Digivolution trees from DS. Like having PawnChessmon digivolve to Hookmon and then to Meteormon makes no sense when Gotsumon digivolves to Icemon, but Icemon can't digivolve to Meteormon. The hard level floors really restricted how Digimon could Digivolve and I was thrilled that Dawn/Dusk fixed that issue

  • @StarDragonJP

    Actually the best way to increase stats is to Digivolve & De-Digivolve, Since the Digimon require the same amount to level up regardless of whether they're Rookie, Champion, or Mega, you can do it pretty quickly depending on how much EXP you're getting in battle & it increases their base stats every time.

    • @Caspicum

Probably not cause of the crappy development cycle but jeez it's upsetting knowing that the GBA could've rendered the same thing.

    Honestly, the only reason I prefer Disk and Dawn to DS is because it made digivolution a lot more accessible. The digivolution in DS got really confusing once you got to special digimon like Omnimon. Digivolution was just a lot more expansive in Dusk and Dawn. That's pretty much it though.
