The one thing I remember from Dawn/Dusk was that the encounter rate was ridiculous and that there were dead end paths leading to nothing everywhere.
Luckily, there wasn't too many dead-ends in this game. They'd typically have a shortcut, or a chest at the end of each path. Not looking forward to that play time if the encounter rate is still massive.

DS has one of the strongest OSTs thus far for sure.
This story was so whimsical and light. Countless joy exploring this world’s history and lore.
I remember after beating the main story boss, I felt so sad that this amazing game was over.

I played it a while ago, like 5 years when I first modded my PS2, and I don't remember it being *that* bad. I just remember it being boring more than anything. Am I in for a treat?
Casp O'saurus well considering its score ranges from 2/10 to 3.5/10 on various videogame reviewing websites, and the fact that it aged horribly, then I'd say it kinda depends on what you mean by a treat.

I played this game recently and found it amazing that you can completely ignore every single feature and quest outside of the main story and still have a good time. What pissed me off though is that you can make it to the final boss of the main story without grinding once, but that boss is so ridiculously over powered that you’re forced to. Destroys the pacing for me but to be fair I didn’t play the game as it was intended in the first place

Dude I was looking for a Digimon DS video where it featured the Digi-farms as I remember having tons of fun with that feature.
I only hope they do another Digimon Story game where they bring back the farms in all its glory and improve on it. As I am playing Pokemon Sun now and it has farms (isles) on its own, I wished it was more involving like Digimon World DS was.
I managed to stay for the whole review reminiscing over the time I played this game 10 years ago. Man I feel old.
And the experience types...my GOD how genius that was. I don't know how I forgot about this one, it made evolving much more fun and engaging (better than camaraderie from Cyber Sleuth imo). Can get frustrating at times, but overall a great experience.

Yeah, it's a shame later entries fucked the farm system. Sure, this version is completely OP, as you can just max defense, chow down on sundaes and win everything, but it's so cool.

Ironically non-digimon fans liked Cyber Sleuth more from what I've seen so far.
Kinda miss the part of the video where you would explain that Digimon World DS is actually called Digimon Story In japan, making these comparisons not just "random similarities" but rather "oh yeah that's the same game series" Also keep in mind that the English localization team just slapped the "world" into the title in non "world" games (like data squad or Championship or Digimon Story games [Cyber Sleuth being the first to break the curse]) you don't really have to play these for completion sake.
Also from all the Digimon Story games the first one is the worst imho (even if considering World 3 as a spiritual predecessor). The series should've started with Dusk/Dawn (or Moonlight/Sunburst like the cool japanese kids are calling it) and Lost evolution and Super Xros Wars were sooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo much better since the battle system was speed up and Digimon given more signature moves.

I know your comment is a little old, but digimon world ds was my first digimon experience. Without it I wouldn’t have gotten into the games, and the others just aren’t as fun to play. Especially the ps4 games which might feel a bit overwhelming for newcomers to the series. Digimon world ds feels like it was made for people who have no idea what digimon is and are learning it alongside the protagonist.

Jesus, this pixel art looks great! But..................I really hate first person battles in RPGs. Not sure why though. Phantasy star was able to pull it off right, but everything else kind of reminds me of old rpg maker games.
The pixel art is fantastic, but I feel that first-person thing. Far too many years in the mid 2000s would make me unable to play first-person JRPGs until quite recently.
RPG Maker: Not even once.
Some of my favorite JRPGs of all time have first person combat. Dragon quest series and older Shin Megami Tensei games mostly.
Yeah, there're some amazing first-person battle JRPGs. Honestly, Etrian Odyssey and Strange Journey are some of my favourite dungeon crawlers ever, but it took me years to get over the "THIS IS RPG MAKER TRASH" attitude.
I get wanting to see your characters represented in battle, but I've smashed through the first 6 Dragon Quest games and am on 7 now, so I'm completely over that.

I've been playing Pokemon Moon for about a week now, and just got to the farm system. It has *nothing* on Digimon farm systems, and it's really fucking basic. Barely even worth using.
After Mega evolutions, the Sun/Moon name conflict, and a bunch of other shit, it's pretty funny how they're overlapping now.

Also I just want to say I think Lunamon and Coronomon do the sun and moon motif better and Solgaleo looks like a Leomon evolution or slide form

There's a LOT of tutorials, but they removed HMs entirely, so if you can stand a fuck-load of tutorials and interrupting dialogue, it's worth it.
Huge Gen-1 nostalgia jerk though. Mostly gen-1 Pokemon.
The removal of gyms is interesting, and they fixed the EXP share curve from X/Y where it was pretty much a necessity or you'd have to grind.
They also added these ridiculous super attack things which are beyond OP and can one-shot boss monsters.

This was my favorite game for a long time. Like I was a Mod on one of the bigger Digimon World DS websites is how big into it I was. It genuinely is as close to the middle of my other two favorite digimon games of DW3 and DS:CS. Thanks for the the dose of nostalgia, now I gotta find my copy.
I'm going through and watching all your videos, but if you had to recommend one Digimon game on the DS, 3DS, or Vita to me, what would it be?
I haven't played Digimon since Digimon World 1, 2, and 3 for the Playstation. I don't mind grinding, so long as it's rewarding, and I love complex skill/evolution trees. I'm also a huge fan of Pokemon, but Digimon holds just as strong of a spot in my nostalgia as Pokemon does, but with far fewer quality games (as far as I've been able to find).

I love your reviews man especially the digimon ones. You seem like a pretty cool guy, glad you enjoyed the game. I personally have never played Digimon World DS but I finished Dusk(or was it Dawn? I forgot) and it was a pretty fun game though I would rather a non first person battle screen.
Glad you enjoy them! There's not too many more to go, and I'm not sure I'll pick up anything outside of the RPG games. Maybe Digital Card Battle...
I think the first-person works pretty well with the smaller screen, because you get to see those fancy sprites in all their glory. They have some amazing sprite-work, and clogging them up with the backs of your own Digimon just wouldn't sit right with me.
Would you prefer a side-battle system instead? I think that'd be neat.
Casp O'saurus You should definitely cover Digital Card Battle, awesome game. I don't even remember how many times I've finished that game. It's just so easy to pick up and play.
Well you do have a point there, a third person view from that viewpoint would really suck.
Yeah, a side-battle system sounds perfect in my opinion. I prefer a battle system where I can actually see all my hard trained Digimon in action. With some decent sprites and animation that would be amazing! One can only hope.

This sounds like a great addition to the Digimon game library. I like how the battle system works, with positioning and area attacks. It looks like fun. I'll be looking forward to future Digimon reviews. Can't get enough of that furry shit apparently. :P
I was playing this abroad on my phone and the speed up button helped it a lot actually
I've said for ages that most Digimon games with speed up are passable experiences. Defo the best way to play a lot of them.
My PC is now so bad that the speed up lags it even more
revisting the games i played, i mostly remember spending hours grinding for the final boss and wanted to remember what the rest of the game _was actually like._

She's a bit rough, this old Digimon World DS video, but I did my best for the time. I was pretty rough on it, mostly for how unnecessarily long it was, but in my video on the follow-up game, Dawn, I started reminiscing for DS, so unfortunately the video doesn't paint a complete picture.
If you're even remotely curious, I'd urge you to not take my word for it, but give it a cheeky go yourself if you can find the time.

I played this game recently. It is a good alternative to DW1 and ReDigitize in which I only believed so far. The progression is very good all the way from the start to the final boss and doesn't require excessive grinding. However the final boss (both in DM and HM forms) and the demon lords in the destroyer belt are massively too much overpowered compared to your Digimons at that point. You can one shot kill all normal ennemies with no trouble but those bosses can kill your 6 digimons in 3-4 turns WTF ??
That difficulty spike at the end is simply infamous. It's like having to climb a huge tower after clearing a small stepped building... Those force you to degenerate your digimons and grind like crazy, changing the way to play drastically (and removing all the fun by the way). This turns hours of fun, discoveries and improvements for your digimons into a boring, brainless and countlessly repetitive routine. And when you reach the point to kill those ubers you don't feel a well earned victory like you should get if they got scaled right.
After finishing the game by one shooting everything with a simple "charge" attack, and nothing challenging to remain, there's no fun to still play it which leads to a straight stop. Sad.
It is a good game by my final opinion, but you should stop playing after beating Armageddmon in the Core Field. There's no point getting anywhere further unless you want to complete all the quests, megas and scan datas.
I did enjoy smashing some of the end-game bosses, but each subsequent boss requires more and more grinding, and it's optional, so I just stopped after I beat like 6 of them or something. I feel you there, my dude.

I'm not even a big Digimon fan, I just love JRPGs almost unconditionally, and they attempt some interesting things. A worthwhile series that seems to be overlooked for some reason.
TBH I kinda missed talkative protagonist in a digimon game. This game is probably the last original digimon game that did it.
Also the general letdown of Cyber Sleuth and what makes the DS digimon story better is that you can evolve/devolve digimon directly on start menu without having to go back to digilab.

another thing I would say deserves praise is Pagumon as a character
It had potential. He was a bit weak, and fell into the whole "Oh, he's bad, but now he's good, because he was always good, he just needed someone to believe in him and friendship and shit." But he is certainly one of the stand-out story moments from this game.
It's true that he fell into a slightly weak and over-done trope, but it's they way it was handled that made me like him so much. Kinda like how in How To Train Your Dragon they fell into A LOT of overused tropes, but handled them so well you almost don't notice it. Granted, he doesn't quite reach that level, but it's certainly done good enough that not only did I not cringe, I actually got invested. It's even more effective given Pagumon's history in the franchise. There are other story-elements that I feel are worth praise, but maybe it's just me fanboying. Would you like to know what I'm talking about, see if we agree?
I don't mind over-used tropes, unless they're over-used in the same piece of media. I'm not a fan of when people say "Oh, this trope is so over-done." and blame new pieces of media for the trends of others. My issue is more that all the evil Digimon, and the evil tamers come to their senses by the protagonist giving them a chance.
Since the significant Pagumon scenes are after most of these, we've already been exposed to this scenario several times. I think he has far more pay-off than any of the other events in the game, and he's definitely a highlight, but seeing every Tom, Dick, and Harry turn from 'evil' to 'good' by the protagonist being a cool guy does undermine him.
If it were him, and him alone, it'd be a fantastic set of scenes though.
Casp O'saurus Yeah, I'm not a fan of everybody turning good so suddenly either. With Pagumon I liked it, since he was built up and handled well. With the bad-tamer girl I tolerated it, since the one to save is was a Digimon she used to abuse, so it didn't bother me. With Alphamon it slightly irked me, but I let it slide since even as Unknown-D he obviously didn't intend to hurt fellow Digimon. The bad tamer Boss though? Yeah, it was really poorly executed there.
never played this game, but if i had to guess based on the original digimon world, the food probably makes it to where their happiness stays up, which effects a lot of harder digivolutions

Speaking as someone who isn't much into card games, I can say with no reservations that Digital Card Battle is the best in the franchise despite the different genre. Or maybe I just have shit taste, I dunno. Either way, I would love to see you do a review on it; I think it's a game that really deserves to be pulled from obscurity.

I spent a large portion of my childhood playing Digital Card Battle. I honestly think it's one of the most balanced card games ever created. Games like Yu-Gi-Oh and Magic The Gathering went off the fucking rails. Hearthstone a shit, and Gwent isn't looking too good either.

If you've got time for both, I'd say give them both a try! Cyber Sleuth is pretty cheap now, but the OG Digimon World is timeless. It ain't going anywhere.

For sure, but I don't want to use that as a crutch, since it's a non-intended way to play. I get why people use it, and I encourage using it because the game's so fuckin slow, but it'd be disingenuous to review a game using speed up. To accurately discuss the game, you've gotta go balls-deep into all the garbage it dishes.
I only played Dawn/Dusk, but this game seems very similar to that. It also has farms that boost stats and such. It also has DNA evolution, which you didn´t talk about, so I assume it is not here.
Still, seems like a good game.
I'm 99% sure DNA isn't in this, at least not in the traditional sense. There are certain Digimon only available through friendship with other Digimon, but that ain't DNA.

I think you were a little bit too harsh with the menu. But overall, it was a very good review.

That moment when you can get 999 stats by digivolving and degenerating.
For the battle loading you have to keep in mind that Cyber Sleuth is 3 D allowing for better zooming and camera angles, so it's mostly due to system limiations, and yeah the DS had 3D so they could've used it, but DS 3D games look really ugly.
I reckon they could've zoomed out to show the battlefield, popped all the sprites at once, then zoomed in. They could probably pull that sort of shit since it was 2D, but it's not a huge issue. You learn to live with it at a certain point.

I'm a bit embarrassed to say that I seriously thought this was an SRPG. I'm genuinely unsure why I thought that. I think I'm finally gonna get around to starting Dusk today, curious to see if I'll be able to use degeneration to raise the cap enough to beat the final boss with a Demidevimon. I love all the Nightmare Soldiers enough that I don't mind having to digivolve, but I'd prefer to do it as a rookie. Oh my goodness, I seriously thought this was dusk and dawn, I didn't even realize just World/Story DS was even a thing. ...that's embarrassing.
I'm pretty sure there're no hard caps based on digivolution tier, but I could be wrong. I will say though, I wish it were an SRPG. I fucking love SRPGs.

That's something a lot of people don't enjoy. I've heard a lot of the same complaints about Dragon Quest and the early MegaTen games.
I am enjoying Cyber Sleuth and may be thinking of getting Hackers Memory. The only thing I don't like about Cyber Sleuth is that you need to (de)-digivolve a whole lot of times to become a mega.But other than that, it's the Perfect Digimon game (Pun intended).
That's an issue that the series has had for a long time. I think they did it best in Digimon World 3, but it was infinitely better in Cyber sleuth than most other games.

DIgimon seems to have found moderate success in the RPG series, so I wouldn't think we'll see a good fighting game for at least a few more years. Cyber Sleuth put the nail in that coffin, I think.

I think I'm decently fair on DS. Dusk and Dawn I rip new ones.
I was blocked by chimeramon, then i grinded a little bit to overcome it, and the rest of the game ended when I literally thought I was on the middle of it, beating the ass of the final boss with a trusty tsunomon.

I enjoyed digimon world ds but it's not on the same level as digimon world 3. That game even had a mini-game card game.
I prefer DS purely because they sorted their shit out, and give it a consistent style. DW3 still had a lot of bloat, with the slow battles and all that. If the battle in DW3 moved faster, or were 2D, I think it'd be much better.
I like my shit snappy and quick.

Digimon World 1 is sick, hey. It's one of those comfy games you replay for funsies. I'd say DS isn't worth replaying if you've already given it a shot, but you never know, you might get engrossed!
@@Caspicum I did actually find it to be pretty enjoyable for the bit that I played it. Also tried DMW3 again but... I guess nostalgia only carries some games so far. I still like DMW1 though, messy nonsense that it is. I seriously hope Next Order comes to PC though.
