The Digimon World Bug that ruined Childhoods

  • There's one thing that brings many European countries together... Their love for Digimon World, but also their disappointment in the buggy mess that is the PAL version of Digimon World that brought us to tears as kids. (Well, I never actually cried because of it but some people may have...) And unless you're from the UK, because you got the actual (mostly) bug-free version...

    First of all, Nia looks lovely in Kairi's outfit. Secondly... German gamer, Digimon World, bug... I think I might be familiar with this story... and how I'm a lucky PAL region fella for being a Brit.
    0:13 - Tetris is an even poorer example with the recent story (it was this year right?) of the kid who beat one of the seemingly unbeatable versions of Tetris.
    0:40 - I adored Digimon World as a kid... but as someone with the UK version, I had no idea about this bug other PAL region players were suffering from.
    1:57 - Wouldn't Ladydevimon have been a more befitting example here? Ah well, nice art of Angewoman... who I don't recall being in Digimon World 1.
    2:51 - Hmm, but why do these bugs exist? I assume the Japanese version would have been the first made and thus the most likely to have bugs but they are popping up in these latter, translated versions? Perhaps the change of language messed with how some of the code was assigned?
    3:21 - It's certainly not beginner friendly and yet Digimon World feels like a natural advanced evolution of the tamagotchi formula that Digimon came from.
    5:45 - That sounds insane... but I believe there might be some logic to it. It'd be cool to see such a trick in action but I'd be terrified of potentially harming the console or disk to ever try it.
    8:12 - I never used a guide for progressing... but I always used a guide for the Digivolutions. I didn't have the internet as a kid but somehow my oldest brother got given a sheet listing all of the digivolutions... with only a few inaccuracies.

    Nice video! I really liked digimon world 1 when I first played it. And, although I played it years later thanks to my older brother's Playstation 1, I am from Spain and know the bug too well. At the time I thought it was just like that and I ended up just playing casually, until finally reaching Mt. Infinity, where I found the teleporter bug and ended up dropping the game.
    I don't know why these are fond memories to me tho.

    US version had Bugs to like one of the Blocky Wire Frame digimon who was only in the PS1 games touching him locked the game. Another was you could get stuck and couldnt move if a boss digimon when it fainted if it was directly on top of your player model. I dont get how I beat this game in 50 hours without any guide back then I only got a Ultimate Twice.

    • @Vanserchan

    • @NovaSaber
      @NovaSaber หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      The US version also had a bug with the jukebox (that gets added to the city when you recruit Giromon), where even trying to use it freezes the game.
      This game having so many region-specific bugs is so weird. Usually bugs are either in all regions, or fixed in whichever versions a game comes out in later. But every localization of Digimon World seemed to add new bugs.

    I mean, I honestly don't know if kids would have go that far or think too much about it, it's a pretty hard game x)
    I wouldn't say playing that game with a guide makes it bad, I don't know, it's heavilly vpet inspired, and, well, as a big vpet fan, what I usually like to do is do 2-3 blind runs and then check growth charts to get the ones I missed, idk I find it more fun that way, but yeah to each their own
    That said idk if you're into Digimon or just wanted to talk about this specific stuff, but more Digimon is always great, cool video ^^
    (Also please never draw nipples on Agumon again it's so cursed T_T)

      I had to add some fanservice for the Agumon fans! And there might be some more Digimon videos coming... eventually! I was heavily into Digimon when I was young but eventually just lost interest in it and now I have many things to catch up on since Digimon World 2003 was the last Digimon related thing I have really played

    •  หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@Vanserchan Oh, well, you should have fun with the recent ones, if you're more into the World style game you should try World Re digitize and Next Order, they're pretty good (and somewhat linked to the first World game)

    Yeah, it sucked a lot! Not only the PAL version is 20% slower than NTSC, looks a lot uglier thanks to the inferior resolution. ...yeah. I was... less than thrilled when I discovered how inferior PAL version is when making my video, haha.
    As for the PAL glitch... I remember when I've bought my first legit Digimon World copy. The seller on the auction site "forgot" to include the information about it being german. I was... well, I was ok with that, as I was quite decent at German (having it as my secondary language - shout out from Poland, btw!). But then... I reached the Ogre Fortress... or rather couldn't reach it. I remember how determined I was to finish the game anyway. And I did. And thanks to the boards (it was in 2008, I believe?) I glitched my way past through the Agumon, got to the Back Dimension and recruited Ogremon the "glitchy" way. I was so satisfied. I nearly completed the game 100% on that save too! (...didn't manage to get the perfect curling back then).
    It seems that everyone hates us Europeans, huh? Harvest Moon: Back to Nature also had a pretty devastating bug where the game froze when you were getting married. Ubisoft (European publisher for the game) even send "patched" copies if you mailed them yours.
    The Glitch is horrible, but hey! It's fun to talk about it now! It's such an interesting thing. I mean... how could they not noticed it...? And what caused it? Why UK version is unaffected? So many question that will never be answered (even Geta92 and GinoshieGino are puzzled!).
    I never heard about the Spanish Mt. Infinity glitch, though! Huh. And I thought I've researched the game well enough.
    It's my first comment here, but I was subscribed for a while now.. I got baited by cute Nia arts and stayed for the awesome content.
    Digimon World really has the most awesome fanbase and I'm so happy that I can be a part of it.
    Cheers from a big fan.

    • @Vanserchan

      I remember absolutely loving the curling minigame and just playing that more than even the actual game eventually, which was basically just me fishing all day to always have enough fish to play the curling since Penguinmon is so greedy for his fish...
      I didn't know that BtN also had a bug like that since it luckily never happened to me, and after googling it they also had fixed versions of the game in stores so looks like I got lucky with mine! Makes you wonder how they never found bugs like that while testing the game since they're just so... out in the open? Like you don't even need to try to break the game so it should have been easily found during testing... (Karen is best girl by the way)
      Thanks for watching and enjoying the art! And also for enjoying Digimon World! Just walking around the world (and finally getting to see places I couldn't see before) for capturing some footage it really made me wanna talk about it in more detail... one day hopefully!

    • @Hodyna
      @Hodyna หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@Vanserchan yup! Curling in Digimon World is really well made! It's also fun... as long as you're not going for the medal. AI is... really strange and aggressive. You pretty much have to either abuse its quirks or pray for it to be merciful. ...and hey, if you're going for 100 fish medal, you'll have plenty of them!
      Later copies were fixed, that's true. Only the initial print was bugged. Basically, if a CD has a # after its serial number (as in it is SLES-02781# and not SLES-02781) it's the fixed version. (ah, a fellow man of culture I see).
      I'll be waiting for that for sure. The original Digimon World (and its direct successors to a lesser degree) is truly magical. And I have to say... it felt a lot... bigger when I was younger, haha! If you never went for the 100% completion of the game, I highly advise you to. It's a nearly spiritual experience. There will be moments when your love for the game will be tested... but it will end just right.

    • @Vanserchan
      @Vanserchan  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@Hodyna I still remember getting Digimon World 2003 a bit later as a kid and thinking it was just like the original World and ended up being really disappointed with it because I did not like turn-based games at all as a kid (Luckily I changed my opinion on that eventually) but still playing it lots since I had nothing else to play. Loved the card-game in it though.
      And then also finding out that there even was a Digimon World 2 and being kinda happy we didn't got that here in the EU since I most likely would have gotten it too and would have hated it since I still am not really into dungeon-crawlers like that. Or maybe it would have turned me into a dungeon crawler fan, who knows...

    • @Hodyna
      @Hodyna หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@Vanserchan I remember when my older friend has told me that the local "software handler" (actually... a pawn shop that sold pirate copies of games) has a Digimon World 2. I expected it to be like Digimon World 1... and boy, I was in for surprise. It was really funny how much of a departure it was from the original! I mean... the setting, the mechanics, the world being segmented into semi-random dungeons... I'm kind of baffled that they omitted it for the EU, but then again... in time we would get it, 2003 would already be released.
      DW2 is... weird. I mean... I kind of like it... even if it has some REALLY terrible decisions. And hey! It was my introduction to dungeon crawlers! ...and every single one I played after DW2 was an improvement!
      I would love them to do another Dungeon Crawler, or straight up remake DW2 with the knowledge they now posess (I mean... Cyber Sleuth were both pretty good).
      I love how BONKERS DW2003 gets. Also, I believe that it was the game that EVERYONE (players, press) expected the original to be - a classic jRPG with monsters, something like Pokemon but on PS1. DW2003 is pretty great and I like it... even if there's a lot of backtracking and some moments felt like a cruel joke (...Mobius Desert... please). And for once, PAL got the better version, with the balance patches and large postgame!
      ...and then, we have the disappointment that was DW4 (...that I strangely came to enjoy with time).
