My understanding is basically that people who understand and engage with the game's mechanics like it, but those who don't hate it. People don't understand how powerful degeneration/evolution loops are, they just think they're getting weaker and don't understand the point.

This mechanic is very powerful but pretty annoying, it's interesting how they implemented the rogue-lite aspect of Digimon World in a more traditional JRPG game but in the end its just more grinding, at least Cyber Sleuth fix the problem with less linear evolutions, degeneration feels more like trying new evolutions instead of just grinding

If you approach this game like a Pokémon game you're probably not gonna have a nice time. There are very few "Trainer Battles" so if you skip random encounters a lot you're gonna be very underleveled. As long you keep that in mind and use the Farm properly, I feel like you won't need to grind much. Unless you need some specific kind of EXP for an evolution.
What I'll say is that this game does like to waste your time with long animations. But this game was released around the same time as Diamond and Pearl, so this isn't exactly a problem that was exclusive to this game.
And Night Crow is just mistranslated Night Claw. Just some Digimon Translation Issues™ as usual :v

I think a lot of how people feel about this game is a bit of a litmus test for whether or not people actually like JRPG mechanics. The majority of vocal gamers in the West, especially on youtube channels and such, really don't like JRPGs and their mechanics. There are admittedly very tedious parts of these games, but for those familiar with the genre, mazes+grinding is kind of the core JRPG experience going as far back as Dragon Quest 1 where JRPGs all began.
What Digimon Dawn demonstrates to me, at least, is that most people who play Pokemon do so for the monster designs rather than the game mechanics themselves. This is why Legends: Arceus was so popular, I think: most people actually hate turn-based JRPG combat, and that game provided an alternative for most of the game.
So, Digimon Dawn isn't really a bad game, it's a fairly average JRPG speaking in the broader context of video games. But if you hate grinding and classic maze-like dungeon design, then of course it would seem like a bad game if you're used to more action-based western game design.

i never played these games as a kid, i got into digimon waaaaaay late, but trying dusk and dawn after cyber sleuth, i felt right at home. then again, the digimon story series is by far my favorite of the franchise, which helps, and i think that's precisely what really takes unaware players aback : it's called "world" outside of japan despite being part of a completely different branch of the digimon video games series, you have to know what to expect and where it actually comes from, otherwise it's easy to understand why it'd be weird and confusing (and "bad").

    • @demonking-zm3rs
      @demonking-zm3rs ปีที่แล้ว

That's not really it imagine if this was your first exposure to this type of game/franchise
In Pokémon you start of with a basic synopsis of what Pokémon are how they function and how evolution works along with catching and attacks
In Dawn/Dusk your thrown into the game no introduction to what Digimon are how the work attributes how digivoloving works why its a good/bad thing how data vaccine and virus works on top of the element system and in a maze that you have to guess at unless you talk to the NPC
The issue is that the game isn't newbie friendly the setting isn't very memorable the grind insufferable and the means of evolution not well explained
Its fine if your used to Digimon but that's the big difference .Every Pokémon is done with the idea that you might be new to the franchise(even if veterans hate it)
Digimon games are so story and gameplay focused that if your not keeping up its going to be unfun

Personally I don’t really remember grinding that much in the game until post game. But I think at that point I was trying to get max level digimon. Other than that there was trying to get the proper exp type for certain evolutions but I don’t think it is that bad. Then again I was a kid playing it so I wasn’t keeping track of the time. I found grinding to fight the elite 4 especially in crystal much worse. As for typing wise you needed to read the manual to understand. Yes this was made in 2007 where you get a manual with plenty of info. There are 8 types and they each counter each other. I remember light vs dark and machine vs water were two of the four pairings. As for version differences there are version specific digimon and bosses. I also recall the start of dusk started you outside training for the tournament before entering it.

you probably won't read this since it been some weeks but there a few things that would help a lot of newcomers.
One, grind can be mitigated a lot by just making sure back members are "training" by degenerate, level a bit, and then digivolve them when they ready to take to the front once more. This then let your front go to the back when you need to train them back up and with that, you can make sure the story can even be done in one sitting if you know what you doing and what you need. In some cases, it be better to degenerate all the way then digivolve all the way back up, the trip back up is not too painful if you do degenerate everyone at the same time since they can keep some moves but its not a good idea to do this. the reason you want to degenerate usually more than once is the gains won't be as great if you only do it once when you at say ultimate or mega. It sounds complicated but its really not.
Two, while stats matters, believe it or not, your level has weight too, even if you have a attack of 200 at lv1 or 200 at lv30, the lv30 will do more damage. Its odd but i remember that was how it works, its good to keep this in mind. This means you might want to wait till a reasonable level before putting the ones that just finished training in the front.
Three, farm is only really good for training stats you can't get on the field like resistance. I wouldn't use it for training levels cause it just... bad for that lol.
the first two things i mentioned is all you really need to know to beat the story though, you really don't need the farm less you intend to make some pvp build against someone and that's assuming you have someone to play it with. This is basically how i played the game back then.

One of my digis needed 80k holy exp (this was in dusk) and that exp isnt super common till I want to say much later in the game (for dusk at least).

I think Jaiden problem with this game is not "the mechanics is confusing" but with the story and the navigation is confusing,
Story problem, 40 minutes of gameplay and don't explain anything to the player about the world, the characters or the digimons, it's not that bad for us because isn't the first digimon contact for us but for someone like Jaiden, don't watched the anime or even know digimon can talk, this probably a very confusing experience. (She still wants to know what f*ck is a Digimon lol)
About navigation, just for this video, the first area looks just simple, empty and lifeless, this is just bad game design and don't help the player to create a memorable experience.

Species XP is a tad annoying, but the grind was always fine to me, especially since the farms can be pretty powerful later on and reduce the species XP grinding. I love Dawn and Dusk to bits. I've played through them plenty of times. The online functions shut down ages ago, though, which means you are locked out of the final post story quest which is basically just a big tournament with characters from the anime series. There are definitely some janky aspects to the game, which I think are mostly introduced by the localization team. There are a lot of grammatical errors, and there some formatting ones, too. They are great games, though, once you understand that degenerating your team members is where the real power comes from. It is kind of counterintuitive in monster taming games, where leveling up and evolving is generally how you make your team better.

As much as i like DWD, the grind is very tedious, especially in the endgame. You CAN make the grind less tedious with Calumon who has a digi-entylecia, a trait boosts exp gains by i think 30%, and have a EXP ring T equipped. The problem is you can only get calumon after beating the story and complete the legendary tamer quest which can only be unlocked after fighting or making digieggs with a friend online/wireless. There are other digimon that boost exp though like DotAgumon (Dawn), DotFalcomon(Dusk), Alphamon, MarineAngemon, and Rosemon burst mode who have the lucky god trait. But i think they only boost exp gains by 12% which is significantly worse than calumon.

The thing with the Digimon games is that there isn't any set style. You know what you get with Pokémon for the most part. But Digimon is a roll of the dice.
I've been an RPG player for a long time. Grinding I'm fine with. But when the entire game is basically grind, Like with the Digimon World series, I see no point in playing.
Now Cyber Sleuth is more my thing. It has more focus in its direction & I adore the way it handled the Digimon database in that in encouraged jumping up & down between trees.
I always hit a point with the World series where I just can't continue. I remember in the last World game I did nothing but grind for 3 days straight & it still wasn't enough.
My mons would always die & be reborn before I could get them to a point where I could continue. It became unpaid work.
I'm probably doing something wrong but it just isn't an issue in other games like it.
Felt like I was close to the end also. If I was on PC I would have probably just cheated at that point to get past it. But thats not so simple to do on console.

I mean not necessarily it's just certain things don't age well to certain people, certain jrpg and RPG mechanics are very you have to abide by the rules that the game makes and sometimes I can be very hectic to people who aren't used to that type of thing it's not a skill issue it's more of a if you like it you like it if you don't you don't, some people enjoy the simplistic way Pokemon is some people like the talking mechanic in most Shinigami and Persona games, the way this game makes you do stuff I've played a lot of games that make you do things this way but if you don't initially like that then you won't like it the maze like levels I could understand but again that's just your typical Dungeon Crawler, the home base being like that is because the other base will become an actual dungeon so they use the layout as if it's the same as a enemies team because yours technically does become that, the encounter rate is really high for real that much I can't defend I'm not mad at her take on the game because well she played a sequel game not knowing really anything to do with Digimon and did you want is not Pokemon they do introduce you to kind of anything other than the characters, I still really love Dawn and dusk surprisingly I thought she would play dusk over Dawn because dust has more designs I thought she would be into.

If i want to compare the battle mechanic is more like dragon quest went you can chan your party attack if you have correct move probably it's little bit complicated to first time pokemon fan.
Still i probably more prefer digimon world formula went you command battle in real time, just make the AI smart and more customized like tale series game, but yeah maybe until it come i can still wait with digimon story who more like JRPG than world series game.

Ngl, this game was jarring when i first got it as a kid and i kinda dropped it only to randomly come back to it and loved it, even if the flaws are definitely glaring at times looking back at it now. To be real, Cyber Sleuth was the same. I bought it, was like "uhh..." then dropped it(also didn't help the game crashed alot) and just recently, I've been obsessed and finally beat it last night 😂. One point I'll make is i do love how Dawn/Dusk lets you make op favs with the dedigi/digivolve loop and i like the presentation of this game and how it has varied battle tracks. Cyber Sleuth using the same battle theme, tho good, gets repetitive fast.

I haven't play this one but from the looks of it the gameplay isn't too much different from World DS and Lost Evolution, which isn't too bad but isn't the best either. But from the review from Jaiden I think it start off expecting the player must've known quite a chunk of Digimon and how it throw so much at player at beginning make it not good for newcomers.

the worst things about the DS Digimon games is that they are overly Grindy and that they were made so fast from the original game that a item from the original game shows up as a win item but doesn't exist in the inventory I think someone did state it was a dummy item

I nearly completed Dusk, in spite of the fact that I do think it is pretty bad. I think it’s a matter Sunk Cost Fallacy. By the time I realized that the mechanics I hated were not going to be fixed by ANY teleportation, map, or encounter reducing items, I had already been playing for too long for me to abandon it, personally.
I’d love to try the remake, but it was ROUGH to play through. Honestly, try the first Digimon Story game and see how that feels to ya. That’s my advice to anyone on the fence.

This game really is good. It's not perfect, but most of Jaiden's flaws are strong points for me. The digimon list is long, the environments are colorful and I like the mazes as they are. My favorite thing is definitely the music. Even if Jaiden didnt like it, it is legitimately a decent game. Most Digimon games are.

The answer is yes, it has way too many mechanics that straight up make it detremental to having fun, like an unnecessary level limit that forces you to evolve backwards and make yourself weaker, forcing you to grind, and when you're forced to grind, that's always a bad thing and this game forces you to do it more than most RPG games.

    • @bubalackgaming8892

Good on you for doing your Due Diligence but Yes it is that bad. Digimon Games have a ton of issues even Cyber Slueth is held back by super grindy ABI, Backtracking, Lack of Direction, Bad Quest Design, Horrible Dialog, World that doesn't even have to do with Digimon. And its the best Digimon game rn.
World 1 : The Constant Punishing Design and Long Hours needed to achieve something you lose in a short span.
World 2 : Dungeon Crawler, with the same old repetitive environments and gameplay. Ultimately is fun if you turn your brain off but not worth it for any long form of gameplay. Just isn't.
World 3 : The best of the World games but the Backtracking is INSANE. Random Encounters are insane. The lack of Direction. The game doesn't tell you that you need to talk to NPCs twice and the BACKTRACKING IS INSANE!
World 4 : I'm not even getting into this one.
World DS : Short Game, but has less problems than Dusk and Dawn but the same design issues.
Dusk/Dawn : Directionless Maze Design, Random Encounters that cannot be Mitigated or Prevented, Forced Side Quests, Terrible World Layout for HUB and other areas. First Person view in a 2D Game. Not fond of.
Cyber Slueth Series : I've said all that needed to be said. Except for the fac that the game doesn't even feel like a Digimon game.
All Other Games : Just some Mindless trash for the most part or a repeat of the same problems.
