    SPOILERS:
    Erika's plot conclusion was important for TWO different factors:
    The first was the whole philosophical conundrum of whether Erika's identity lies in her dying body or the computer that holds most of her memories anyway. This is why Hudiemon happened: she literally stuck all her memories into Wormon and just let herself die. She was content that Hudiemon "was" her.
    The second wasn't a sacrifice at all, it was the complete opposite. If she let the whole timeline reset happen as intended, she would get her human body back but would ultimately die. Full stop. Writing herself out of existence was the only way for her to live her own life, it just coincidentally also freed edgy stoic guy of all his secret edgy troubles.

    • @Caspicum
      @Caspicum  4 ปีที่แล้ว +20

      That's one of the reasons I think it was under-realised. There wasn't really a happy alternative. She picked objectively the happiest route to go down, and I'd say it was still a sacrifice, as any decision, regardless of loss prevention, was still a big sacrifice. You see a lot of that in her mind and memories, when she's in hospital and is treated like a freak when she just wants to be normal, so any kind of substitute of her purest desires is still a tough decision to make.
      I think the ending was also great because we got to see what a Digital World could look like insider a Cyber Sleuth universe, and it looked sick.

    I personally prefered Hackers Memory to Cyber Sleuth, in large part because I simple cared a lot more about the members of Hoodie than I did the main CS cast.
    I do share most of your gameplay complaints though, and wish they had used the time/money they saved with the heavy asset reuse to imporve on those aspects (I also wish Bandai had spent more on localization, because the Digi-Line especially is still a grammatical mess).
    A small thing I really enjoyed was how, depending on your dialogue choices, you can actually "succeed" in HM's version of P3's "Operation Babe Hunt" and exchange digi-line info with a girl. Sure she only sends you like 5-7 messages over the rest of the game (mostly concerning her school/home life IIRC), but it's one of those minor touches I really appreaciate.

      I love this game. It's enjoyable and I don't mind the grind too much. Though I will say that there are points where it feels like the game is extended with a bit too much padding and the grind for some megas is a bit nuts. Honestly what made Hacker's memory better than Cyber Sleuth, is the fact that there were no evolutions locked behind a quest. In CS, literally all Royal Knight digimons are locked up until the last 2 chapters of the game. In HM everything from the get go is obtainable (Except for the Arkadiamon line which requires you to beat the game once).

It's the same issue that is presented when the pokemon crowd wants their games to be "less brain dead and more challenging". At the end of the day it's still rock, paper, scissors. But it's way better in this game because you have secondary attributes to consider. Though I suppose it's not used to it's full potential.

    In all honesty I really liked the game. I learned never to compare the games to others of the series and just take it as is. In all honesty it’s good. Yeah the story is not unique but let’s be real, everything has been done before and making a story that’s totally different in today’s time is a challenge. Granted I would of loved more to the end game but in all honesty usually you just aim for digimon you wanted or start up again on a harder difficulty. Let’s all be glad it’s not like digimon world 2.

    • @Caspicum
      @Caspicum  5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I think comparing games to one another is important, especially when they're from the same series, or present the same ideas. Given that HM was basically CS with a cherry on top, I'd say it's very fair.

    one thing I love about these games is the setting, it reminds me of Summer Wars and it has to be intentional, it's only fitting since Digimon our war game inspired summer wars so I love seeing those two ideas merge so well
    and I like the battle mechanics nice to see the Data virus vaccine triangle actually used in a game finally instead of a clunky elemental system based on individual Digimon's resistances with only general guidelines
    but those are attributed mostly to the first game I can't really finish this one because of reasons until it drops on PC

    • @Caspicum
      @Caspicum  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Oh holy shit Summer Wars looks so much like Digimon it's not even funny.
      And yeah, I dug the power triangle, but the weird secondary moves were too many, and then you'd be PlatinumNumemon leveling Digimon and spend 10 minutes deleting techniques... The system could be so great, it just needs some tweaks.

    Great video as usual. ;) I haven’t played the game myself but I have picked up the first game (although my son has played more of it than I have :P). I’ll have to give this one a try. I personally don’t have any problem with closely tied games sharing assets, like Ocarina of Time and Majora’s Mask. Some people may see it as lazy (and in some cases it is), but it’s not something that bothers me.

    • @Caspicum

      I love it in Ocarina and Majora because it's equally familiar and foreign. There's also enough new assets, or at least a new assembling of them, to make the world feel different and unexplored. Here, it's just the same world with mostly the same maps, which would be fine if the last game demanded it, but... Eh.
      Definitely worth a try though!

      @s.silverman9864 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Caspicum The problem is most, if not all, SMT games are lesser covered in favor of Persona.
      Don't get me wrong I love the Persona series to death, Persona 3 in particular was my first Atlus game and I will always regard it highly. SMT however offers a kind of power fantasy and ideological freedom that's hard to come by in other games.
      Also the soundtrack, half of my playlist is filled with just Atlus ost’s.
      As for Devil Survivor I think the second one was a bit more forgiving in terms of difficulty, which makes for an all around smoother gameplay experience.

    • @Caspicum
      @Caspicum  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah, I played the second once quite recently but one of the 3DS versions crashes, and I got that one :(
      Overall, it definitely felt more forgiving. A lot more open and free, less strict in how you spend your time, with pointless, world-building events taking a backseat to character stuff, and it seemed like there were less gimmicks over all.
      My first SMT game was Nocturne, so I'm up in arms about the series basically becoming Persona lite, but at least they can't retroactively hurt Digital Devil Saga and the like. :^)

      @@Caspicum Huh, I didn't even know that 3DS cartridges could crash, or any Nintendo cartridge for that matter.
      By “Persona Lite” I’m assuming you're talking about Apocalypse?
      You know its strange I usually hate the typical “Friendship Solves Everything” trope, but for some reason when It comes to Persona I’m oddly forgiving about it.
      I do agree that these elements don’t really mesh well with mainline SMT though. That being said I think Devil Survivor does a good job at combining the best aspects of both series.
      Since we are on the topic of Nocturne could I ask for your opinion on how SMT presents its endings?
      I’ve heard a lot of criticisms on how vague the endings tend to be, and how little they address the aftermath of your chosen path.
      I consider this its greatest merit though. Most of the time the endings are left purposely vague, but they leave just information throughout the game to lay the foundations of what the new world could be like, and the rest is up to the players interpretation.
      A lot of people would call these types of endings lazy, and for any other game I might agree, but for a series like SMT that emphasizes ideological freedom (usually) I think its the best design choice.
      What do you think?

    When you said, this was a Persona game you weren't kidding and... honestly I kind of love it. Here's just a few of the things this game takes inspiration from the Persona series.
    Persona 1: The Butterfly dream is used as a motif to reflect the desires of a girl suffering from an illness.
    Persona 2: Major character ends up being erased from existence with only the protagonist remembering she ever existed.
    Persona 3: Here is your Digital Velvet Room and here is your Digital Elizabeth voiced by Miyuki Sawashiro so we got it spot on, eh let's have Maaya Sakamoto play your favourite coffee detective too.
    Persona 5: Let's fuse the real world with the cogni- I mean uh Digital World so digital information can manifest itself in reality... oh and for some reason the Shibuya underground is a gateway to hell.
    That feels like the tip of the iceberg it's clear whomever made hackers memory really loved the Persona series.

As far as the rest, from what I can tell piercing was adjusted from the previous game, of course it's still effective. Why bother with penetration at all if it isn't effective. If they nerf a feature to uselessness that is not balance, that is just pointless. To comment on the rest I would have to watch your review of the first game since you skipped all that but I didn't have any of these issues, maybe because I don't grind as much. The only gameplay aspect that got worse to me was spreading out the memory upgrades to the point that I was stuck with a three digimon only party for over half the game. I just finished both Cyber Sleuth games for the first time via the complete edition, so here's my thoughts:
    Even with all the digimon in both games, Hacker's Memory is the better game. Unfortunately, it's impossible to recommend that someone just play Hacker's Memory since there are so many events that happen that would seem random without the context from the first game. Luckily since the Complete Edition is now the only convenient way to play either of these games, a potential player will receive both.
    The plot and characters of Hacker's Memory are leaps and bounds better than Cyber Sleuth's, but that isn't saying much. This applies especially to the Player Character, who is garbage in Cyber Sleuth but has actual characterization in Hacker's Memory. The plot of the first is rather generic with a few cool moments, while the plot of Hacker's Memory has far more interesting and original ideas going for it. I'd say of the plot threads contained in Hacker's Memory, the K thread probably could have been either cut down a little or followed up on better..
    Gameplay-wise, I can't comment on differences because most changes were backported to the OG in the complete edition. The only one that wasn't was the new Hacking powers, meaning that Hacker's Memory still wins due to acceleration alone.
    The difficulty is weird in both. Hard mode spans from easy, to difficult, to literally unable to get one hit in on the boss because they cranked its speed up to asinine levels, while normal mode is incredibly easy.
    Both games have incredible music, though Hacker's Memory wins on a technicality since it used almost all the old music plus more.
    The huge list of menial sidequests is a strike against both games. It seems like a relic of the DS games. They could have used that time making fewer but better sidequests or improving the main story.
    The fairly generic and boring combat is another strike against them, and seems like another relic from the DS games. While being able get any move onto any digimon is cool, most of them outside of the strongest basic attacks feel useless, and even then the special moves are usually better. The support and healing moves would be good too, but there is so much money in the game that items are effectively infinite. I'm sure that the asinine hard mode bosses worked against the support moves in terms of usefulness too, since the only time I felt the need to use them was against those bosses, but it showed effectively zero change in my actual turn amounts, damage, defense, etc. Then I'd switch it down to normal mode and then I was wiping the floor with the same bosses, again rendering the support moves useless. I'm sure some of these moves are more useful in multiplayer, but I have yet to dig into that.
    Hopefully in the next Digimon Story game they're more willing to change up the gameplay from this, and balance the modes better. Contrary to what my complaints may make it seem like, I do think both games are very good, they just could use some slight improvement.

    Played the original one on PSTV and bought the duology from switch ESHOP sales, then replayed the first again and then HM.
    ...And all in all, let's just say I'm glad to (finally) hear an opinion that ain't all praises for the game(s).
    *(Fair warning, this is gonna be lengthy one)*
    Overall I would say I enjoyed Hackers Memory more due the gameplay improvements and added variety with the new stuff, despite it being rather shallow.
    I also liked the improved roster as monster collecting is fun and praise the lord my boy Gotsumon got added as a starter. AND due some bought bonus I could make him "special" by wearing the goggles as well, signifying him as my starter. Great, awesome, loved all that!
    I also think there as a LOT less running back-and-forth between point A, B, etc that Cyber Sleuth had - ESPEICALLY on side quests - though it still ain't prefect on HM yet either. Again, great, definitely take that as that was one of my most hated aspects of CS.
    Also liked the new Eden areas and IRL areas as they brought more variety to the experience, especially on Eden side when it wasn't all "Kowloon 24/7" this time around. And let's just say... HIGHLY appreciated that one!
    ...Now to the things I didn't like so much. :)
    Mainly the story for me. *SPOILER WARNING for reader, mind ya!!* -although I won't go into totally spoiling it. I've grown to not expect the most deep stories with Digimon, mostly expecting the good ol' "my friends are my power!! Begone, o' big baddy!" and that's all fine and good.
    ...But imo these games have some serious tone issues at times.... For most of the game (main story and sidequest wise) it's all the utopia like thing where after you first kick the boss's *** it's then to laughs and holding hands in agreement that we can live together just fine. ...Then it also tries to be SO damn dark and (even worse) so damn EDGY at the same time and it's like... If ya like it, that's awesome, more power to ya, but personally I find this clash more cringy and I just couldn't take this too seriously, despite the game REALLY trying to make me do so.
    At one point there's the Ryuji's "DAMN!! Everyone I love dies!!" -moment which then leads to "Dark Ruiji" -arc... but before you can continue the story further; go do this sidequest for Chuumon asking for Sukamon and (forgot which)Numemon competing about their poop. And it goes DEEP to that, bringing the temperature, size, smell ALL THAT.... Again, I've learned to not take my Digimon games TOO seriously (and I'd argue the poop sidequest WAS really "digimon" in a sense) but holy *** did it clash bad with the trying to be edgy thing...
    Worst of all, msot characters tend to have an edgy phase for one reason or another, like how in the first game - when you go fight Craniamon - Yuuko has the moment of "since when did we become friends anyway!?" -moment with MC and ll I'm thinking of is that where the *** did this spring out from?!?!? It's sudden and thankfully goes away rather soon but it's still there.
    Then there's the stuff with K and I dunno 'bout anyone else, but to me it was fairly clear who they were gonna be AND their motivations for doing so as well. But the game tries hard to make it mysterious and "oooh who the heck is this mysterious character?!" -dialogue is going non-stop... There was one part I actually got excited for it, mainly the part K first takes the mask of and reveals the face I wasn't expecting. I was like; "Ok, game, got me here! Didn't expect that!!" and for a moment I was excited that I might be wrong about all of it. ...theeen I figured out what was going on and it was back into "trope land" again...
    Speaking of which; the tropes!!
    Now, I'm not one of those who hates the use of tropes. They get used because they work, thus they become tropes in the first place. But they need to be executed properly and not the lazy / shallow way and these games certainly do it the shallow and lazy way. Basically the ropes being there in an attempt to make things (and worst; characters) look deeper when they're not because this way they don't have to spend time showing it to player.
    It doesn't help that each character is a trope and pretty one-note on top of it, thus it makes it waaaay harder to actually make any of 'em likable. ...And then there's "characters" like Rie Kishibe... Oh my dear LORD she's easily one of my most hated characters in ANY game! ''Oh, but you see, you're supposed to hate her since she's the villain, that's why sh----'' NO! Trust me, I totally get they want us to dislike her, but she is a BAD "character," a waste of the games developement time and when the first game gave her a "happy ending" I seriously bursted out laughing at that point...
    Then there's Suedou who I THREADED appearing in both games. Not due his boring / flat characterization, but because one negative aspect of the game was emphasized with him the most. He. Never. Shuts. Up. (And yes, seeing I'm writing the bibble here I DO see the irony, but I wanna let this out of my system now that an opportunity presented itself, okay!)
    A lot of the game is pages of dialogue is either a cliche or simply not interesting at all and it brings things to snail phase. And THEN Suedou marches in and goes "So, yeah, anyway, at the beginning of the cosmos----" and then if we're lucky he reaches the "Even the ancient romans---" -part in an hour of intense button mashing...
    The reason I went on a rant there is that I've been critical with these games in the past and one card people LOVE to play with is that; "Well, it's Digimon STORY, so the emphasis being on it means the rest of the game wasn't the main focus, so of course it's not gonna be triple A!"
    ...But I simply don't het what they're talking about here. BOTH of the stories have their moments, they do, ABSOLUTELY. There's a nice hook at the start and an emotional ending in both of 'em and in general I'd argue the Cyber Sleuths story is overall at least rather fine. ...But Just because 15% of the story is good that doesn't make the rest of those 85% that are slow paced, dull and boring, run-from-place-A-to-B, bad dialogue heavy -parts somehow invalid.
    Again, it has its good parts, not denying on that, but overall... if their emphasis was on the "Story" -part... then they failed on that one.
    *TLDR: Overall my personal thoughts (on both games) go as following:*
    + Monster collecting is fun
    + Additions for Cyber Sleuth and new stuff in Hackers Memory is refreshing
    + Hackers Memory is also more (color palette wise) stylished and varied in its dungeon and menu design
    + The duology pack does contain "bang for ya buck" - especially if ya get it for cheap or from a sale
    + Anything Wormmon related comedy in Hacker's Memory
    - Characters are dull tropes (some are even a waste of script) and dialogue in the game is really mediocre, doesn't help there's A LOT of it
    - Story is generally bad and moves way too slow than needed, plus there are clashing story elements
    - Some bosses can be somewhat "bullet spongy" and some even not that great design to begin with (looking at you Matadormon, the boss I "auto played"
    EDIT: So uh... I paused the video at 2min mark when I wrote ALL this,
    I'm now at 5min mark and seems our thought align a lot lol.
    ...
    ...
    ...I love you ❤

      Well, the budget for the game is most likely gonna be low. So in terms of presentation I'm not holding my breath. What we should expect is something relatively safe but enjoyable in terms of gameplay and visuals while the bigger effort goes into the story, characters and atmosphere. After all, Survive is mostly being made to keep us occupied until the next Digimon Story game, which is being made for more powerful platforms as opposed to cyber sleuth/Hacker's memory

  • @digiing1992
    @digiing1992 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Since the main plot of Hacker's Memory was to be the side story of the 1st game, and everything else in the game appearing being a bonus, it did just what it was supposed to be.
    It wasn't meant as a new game but just as an extender of the first game with some side plot. Since Hacker's Memory is being exactly what it is supposed to be, I don't get why some players take it as a personal attack on them.

    • @Caspicum
      @Caspicum  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't think I've seen anyone take it as a personal attack, it's just a bit lacking. It didn't even do a great job at being a side story, because you arguably do more for the plot of the original Cyber Sleuth than you do in the first game.
      Definitely a great concept with some great characters, but regardless of what it set out to do, I think it dropped the big ball, especially in the gameplay department.

The dude from Cyber Sleuth looks like Michael from pokemon XD except instead of looking like a dweeb, he's all edgy and cool looking, meanwhile the kid from hacker's memory is like Wes with his blue jacket, short spiky hair, and visor that's rarely actually over his eyes, but now he looks like a loser. Something I believe is important for the disproportionate amount of love Cyber Sleuth and Hacker's Memory compared to the frankly mediocre presentation, is the role of Pokemon in this.
    And yes, I know, putting Digimon in Pokemon's shadow can be a sore point.
    For the last 20 or so years, for whatever reason, Pokemon has been the defacto monster training RPG on the market.
    Whatever your own thoughts on Pokemon's recent history, it's undeniable that people have been growing dissatisfied with it since gen 6, arguably since gen 5.
    I believe Cyber Sleuth and Hacker's Memory being vaguely nostalgic, but ALSO a technically functional monster training rpg made by people who seem to care some amount more than zero makes it the hero of the hour, picking up the ball pokemon dropped, purely by accidentally being in the right place at the right time.
    Hacker's Memory, then, I think gets some undeserving praise. It's basically an official romhack, like, say, Majora's Mask, that gets compared against... whatever you call Pokemon's 3rd versions, which is a comparison it absolutely stomps, because it's not an equivalent thing to begin with.
    When removed from that context, both games are exceedingly mediocre, if mostly inoffensive games that accomplish the bare minimum to be "interesting" on every level an rpg is expected to perform. Satisfying grindfest, though. Felt the old Disgaea nerve to grind before the first major plot milestone hard, and Hacker's Memory's transfer bonus of letting you devolve into whatever you want was the tastiest reward for grinding a bunch of irrelevant garbage I've ever gotten.
    Meanwhile SMT cries in a corner somewhere.

      Quality comment. I'm not sure why people get sore when you bring up the Digimon and Pokemon comparisons. Did everyone suddenly forget the NDS years, where it *literally copied pokemon*. It's weird to see Pokemon copying Digimon now though, I will say... By putting out shitty games fuckin gottem.
      You're right though, Hacker's Memory is definitely a step-up from what people expect from mini-expansions to monster collecting games. I'd never really thought about it like that.
