My friends and I were at the BWCA in 2005. We paddled 18 miles into the unknown to Lake Insula and it was the most beautiful camp that we found. The fishing was insane. We were catching walleye back to back. It was the 2nd night and about 2am and we all fell asleep to a pack of wolves howling, i would guess they were pretty close to us, maybe a mile or less. There was 5 of us in a huge tent. And 3 in another tent. I woke up to the sound of giant foot steps and sticks breaking. Everyone else was sleeping. I was on the edge of the tent. I could hear whatever it was getting closer. I could even hear it breathing and it slowly got just to the side of my tent, just on the other side of the plastic. I was trying not to make any noise and still as can be. It pressed up against the tent. I thought that was it for me. Eventually i passed out. Im guessing it was a huge black bear. I will never really know but, when you cant see through the tent, you're other senses kick in and i could tell by the sticks breaking and the breathing and everything that it was atleast 500 pounds. It was terrifying and exiting all in one. The BWCA is the most dark, dense, quiet scary place at night. I hope i told a good story!

@glam_goth6662 There is nothing like the call of loons and wolves in the night. My son and I shared a wild howling session one night. We kept that to ourselves to cherish forever. Paddling early in the morning before the dense fog lifted created an eerie auditory world of loons calling merely 2 feet away and neither of us seeing the other. The memories return me to that northern paradise.

A friend and I went on a canoe/fishing trip in the BWCA back in the 80's, and had a bit of a scare making our way out of there.
Well, we were having such a good time we lost track of time, and realized we had to head back to get moving to get the canoe back to the canoe rental on time.
It was dark by then, but we had no choice... so we started making our way back aided by the bright moonlight.
We were about halfway to our destination paddling out in the open having equal distance between both islands on either side of us...
Well... all of a sudden there were big splashes in the water surrounding the canoe- yeah, we freaked out a bit thinking it was Bigfoot throwing big rocks at us from one of the shorelines... until I saw that beaver tail whack the water in front of the canoe lol :)
We went from panic mode to adrenaline charged laughter... one second we thought we were about to die... the next we thought it was the funniest thing ever, the wave of relief that swept over us was palpable and likely one reason we exploded into laughter.
Alls well that ends well... we got the canoe back on time without further incident, and all in all it was a great trip! we caught lots of fish and got the sht scared out of us :) it doesn't get any better than that! lol

@@je862 No, have not set foot in Minnesota for over 30 years.
Not that I wouldn't like to- but it wasn't in the cards for me.
If you ever go- be sure to get one of the waterproof topographical maps- they can be a lifesaver.
I had a good compass, but the rocks must be loaded with something that throws them off, as it was useless.
So the map was all we had to navigate- and another issue related to navigation, is just how flat the place is- nothing above the trees to use as a marker-
bottom line- it is easy to get lost up in them woods if you are not adequately prepared.

There are scary happnings from non humans that aren't always BF or Dog man, etc. I was backpacking in Yosemite's high country and arrived home with everyone freaking out over me, because right where we'd camped in the open, a bear had pulled someone out of their tent at the next wilderness camp sight over the hill from us.

I lived in Ely for two years and canoed a ton in the Boundary Waters those two years. Grew up in MN in the Duluth area so this was a normal thing to go up and do even when I didn't live up there. Portaging can be super tough and exhausting and if you don't take a few maps and know where you are, what you are doing, etc, it can get scary. Especially when you are trying to leave and get out after a beautiful weekend of camping. After my experiences there I'd be more afraid of actual people. Met some amazing people and had bad experiences with some not so amazing people. There are people who live in those woods and it's not talked about much so this wasn't some mystical creature. It was a person, I'd bet money on that. We got our stuff gone through and taken a few times and the only thing that did that was a human who was a jackass. I have stories from my life up there that seem weird like this but if you go in enough, you know exactly what animals are there and what strange people are there. LOL

Ive been there many times since i was about 12 years old in the early 80's. Some of the weirdest things happened when i was there. Bears the first time, it was like they watched us as soon as we werent visible they came. Even when we were in the tents. Moved to a small island and it didnt help, they came back.
I was up there when a huge storm took down countless trees, we couldnt take cover in the tent from the storm because trees and branches were coming down everywhere and you needed to keep your head on a swivel so to speak. Maybe 5 or 6 years after that forest fires started and we were told to evacuate by a forest service agent.
8 of us were up there one trip for a week, and we seem to be the only 8 in the world that didnt see the low speed chase of an infamous white ford bronco made famous by oj Simpson. We were all viking or packer fans and the first thing we saw walking into grand maris dairy queen was a newspaper with oj's mugshot..lol.
So if i ever need some excitement in my life again, ill plan a trip to BWCA.
It really is a fantastic place

Deliberate breaking of branches around our tent, & later, a shaking tree scared some other girls that went off to the makeshift latrine in the trees!! One of my extraordinary experiences in the BWCA was the time a pack of wolverines ran through the forest finally leaping off a small cliff into the lake. They quickly swam away. That was my only wolverine sighting in my life. Immersion into that magical land while paddling and camping always brought unexpected delights. Yes, there are many mysterious noises, but I never feared them. I recall Lake Agnes did have a bear problem at one time. We camped there one night, no bear, but orchids created a memory that makes me smile today.

Last time I paddled Gabbro, state game warden asked me to bring a rifle and shoot a bear who was taking packs on a portage. Wife and I pack light and do once across portages. Left my wife and packs at the far side of the portage. Never saw the bear, but saw an amazing number of packs up in the woods - torn apart. People would portage canoe and a pack, come back, find packs missing, return to canoe - and find that pack missing. Game Warden told me where the key for their nearby cabin was if I wanted to go up and set up a blind and get the bear. Grinned and asked him, "How much pay to do your job"? He said, "Don't you like bear meat"? Me, "No."

Two week boy scout canoe trip in 1965, it wasn't the BWCA just yet. Went in as far as Lake Insula. Saw moose, bear and mink, never even heard a wolf howl. In those 13 days it rained about 7 or 8 of those days. Went back the same route twice 1992 & 1993, stayed at the juncture of lakes 3 & 4. Last time was 2011.

The island with the berries on lake 3 is immaculate. I haven’t been in twenty years. Remembering nights when my eyes adjusted to the dark and the water was smooth as glass. You feel like you could see across any lake. When fog rolls in it feels like something out of a fairy tail. I always imagined if a mythical creature lived up there it would be a jackalope

Sure is a man thing tho to gather them all together and tromp over there to show it who's boss. Lucky no one was killed by the one or more bigfoot's that were there.
