LOVE this video!! Btw, I can so relate to the comments about your son "downloading data." My eldest has high-functioning autism and a slow processing speed. In school he always looked like he was checked out mentally, couldn't take notes during lectures, just not on planet earth. HOWEVER, he would later ace the test and make observations no one else registered. In fact, he's brilliant and has the Mensa membership to prove it. His "slow" processing is only because he's processing so much more info than anyone else in the room. So be encouraged!! Appearances aren't always what they seem!

Don't sell yourself short on the "teacher" part Tom. One of the most amazing teachers I have ever had the pleasure to meet was "teacher Tom" he is an early childhood education teacher and he is an incredible hands on learning and problem solving through everyday experiences. You provide opportunities for children and they drive their learning.😊we need more men teaching children.

Those people who offer to help, the offer to help is the reason that they went camping at all.
I miss camping so much because that was the reason to get away from home and out into nature. My parents always had a tent, or camper on a truck, or a travel trailer, or a motor home. I don't get to do that any more. I'm not a tent person, at all. And even though my little sister has a trailer she bought it for her to use not other people in the family. Maybe I should look into a cabin rental somewhere???
I loved this video. I'm so glad you had better luck on this trip with the tow vehicle as well as the trailer. And I like that you were able to sneak in some homeschooling as well. Great opportunity for everyone. And the fires, cooking on the fires, making the fires roasting and toasting your meal(s). God Bless you all. You all really deserved this trip, you've been working so hard in so many directions and now, it seems, you just have finish up projects, like the basement stairs and others. And there will be other pressures after like the farm crops need to be taken care of and brought in from the fields. Thank you for sharing and fantastic traveling you're sharing with us.

    • @clairenesham9984

Totally! An offer of help is gratefully received if needed and thankful for the offer if not. It could mean it helps confidence for the person who might need it for the future and continue camping if future and not be put off.

I have a 6,4,2, and one on the way and I deffanatly agree that there are times I'm excited for them to all be 3/4+ but our littles are already getting into outdoors stuff. we go for small hikes (sometimes pretty challenging, just short) and our oldest 2 are starting to fish. they also love camping (big walk in tent, air mattresses, bag of toys, 1-2 nights) and camp fires and playing in the dirt. If you wan to get out when they get older I just encourage you to make sure your getting out as much as possible now. One thing we loved before Covid is tinkergarten. I hope none of this comes off as rude, just wanted to offer some encouragement and maybe ideas for the little years ❤.

As you begin homeschooling, I would recommend looking up info on Charlotte Mason's approach of having your child narrate the information they read/learn back to you, either verbally or in writing. This lets you know that they have "downloaded" the material! Especially helpful with boys. My 22 yr old is in college and is doing classes online from home right now (COVID) and without thinking about it is narrating (it's second nature). Makes me smile!

    • @CH-yk1op
      @CH-yk1op 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Agree. Super simple, minimalist (it takes NO supplies), you can do it anywhere. We did a big East Coast trip and the kids would do an oral or written narration after each big thing (Jamestown, a DC museum, a Vermont maple grove, etc). It was incredible to see how much they learned. It leads to written narration, which leads to essay writing. I’ve seen my kids grow in writing this way much more than a packaged writing curriculum and it’s way simpler.

When you were talking about Corbin and homeschooling it reminded me of my youngest. He always looked like he wasn't paying attention to anything, but he is an auditory learner and he was taking in everything. He has an amazing memory and knew everything that had been talked about. So be encouraged that they don't have to *look* studious to be learning. ;-)

I home educated my 4 adult sons in their 30s. I used to chart our family vacations as an extension of our learning but in reality it was an extension of our lives. We even did a “field trip” to dads work. He was a juice blender and we followed the fruit from the garden to the store shelf. Anyway, so much of what you do is what I did...I enjoy watching your videos because it is like a look back...thank you for all you share.

I don’t know if anyone else has said this, but it’s also possible to homeschool some of your kids and not others. One year, my boss had one kid in public school, one in private school, and one homeschooling, because that was the best decision for each kid that particular year. Gotta love that flexibility!

Soooo, we are RVer's and we own an RV and boat storage. Your camp host did EXACTLY the right thing. Those people were interloping, hoping to take advantage and stay as long as possible without detection. Unfortunately, there are people who will steal nights and not leave when they are supposed to, hoping that the next resident isn't due for several days. Shame on them. Your storage and cabinets... You need shelves in the cabinets to give you layers of storage and for counter space which you said Tom will do. You might look at Home Depot for kitchen counter space. They have a butcher block tool chest on wheels that can function as counter and storage space. We went from a 38 ft 5th wheel to a 45 ft 5th wheel and I LOST so much kitchen counter space. I hated it. The rolling butcher block tool chest solved the problem. Glad you had a great trip!

Once you learn the “always pack for all 4 seasons” lesson, you never forget it. A few years ago in August, my bff and I went on a road trip to Yellowstone in August and didn’t think it would get down to 28 degrees at night! Unzipped the tent in the morning and a layer of frost fell onto the foot of my sleeping bag! So the following May we did a road trip of the Utah national parks and the north rim of the Grand Canyon. We had great weather in Utah and when we enter the Grand Canyon NP, I start noticing snowflakes and then there’s more and then it’s sticking to the ground as we’re getting closer to the lodge/visitors center on the rim. It’s like a full on snow storm when we get there, but because we had that experience at Yellowstone, we had our puffy jackets, beanies and gloves, waterproof hiking boots. There was a ton of tourists wearing shorts in the gift shop buying all the hoodies, beanies and gloves. One guy even commented that “you ladies came prepared!”

We have a similar closet for our kids, we use a wire drawer system from ikea, it fits perfectly in the cupboard and leaves us enough room above to hang their coats. Each kid has a fabric box to keep their stuff (books, toys, etc) at the end of their bed. Also use lots of command hooks, on the inside of their cupboard for hats. Command hooks in our room for hats, everyday coat, keys, etc.

Northern Wisconsin in May, July and September can be very cold. Been there. Grew up just south of there. We sat at a picnic table eating watermelon and wearing winter jackets. But it was the great outdoors and worth it. You might be glad you’re homeschooling. My daughter is a teacher and feeling like she’s about to lose it. Nobody’s happy because the “plan” to do both distance and on-site learning is not working. Everyday a new hoop to jump through is set on fire. All we can do is pray. I think your kids will be happier learning from home. At least this year while we’re going through this freak show. Your kids are sooooooo cute.

But wasn't this at Pattinson State Park in Wisconsin? So pull through sites might not be universal. I've never camped with a camper but I've spent quite a bit of time at Minnesota State Parks and almost all of the camper sites I've seen are pull through sites.

We went camping by the falls last week! It got so cold we had to head home a day early! We only had a leaky tent though! We could deal with the cold, wet and cold crossed the line! Lol The falls were absolutely beautiful!! I agree on the bug part! We didn’t see any! I want to go back next summer! This part of the country is just beautiful! Now I just need to convince my husband to buy a fixer camper and I will be set! 😉

We camped in Upper Michigan the second week of July and were in winter hat and coats. Who takes winter hat and coats in July? Someone who has lived there before. My kids totally thought I had lost my mind, in fact they called my sister who lives in the UP and asked her, she of course said to bring the. They still didn't believe us, but theg soon learned we weren't wrong. It looked like you had a great trip and the scenery was great. We homeschool. My 4 have been homeschooled from the beginning, two have graduated and another one will this year. I too figured that just because it doesn't look/seem like they are learning doesn't mean they aren't. Mine learn best by hands on, especially science and history.

I so enjoyed your videos. The memories from camping are so special, as is the bonding times. I have one strong suggestion if no one else has mentioned it...this comes from Life lesson on one of my family's trips. Don't use the fire ring as a foot rest when there is an active fire.....the metal will melt a tennis shoe. No one was hurt, but the shoe was stuck and ruined.....set a few rocks close to the ring for foot rests. Then have a fabulous time on every trip....and I will continue to enjoying the memories I have when I get to see your family making your own set of memories. Thank you

My husband and I have been camping for years and it is the responsibility of the host to make sure everyone that is scheduled to leave is off their site at the stated time. The mix up on your site is unfortunate and totally not your fault in any way. I'm sure that was a very uncomfortable situation for everyone. So sad you had to deal with that because someone else didn't do their job. You handled it very well though. Keep on camping...

Just watching this now on 4/22/2021 and I have to laugh at how friendly and helpful fellow campers are! Hubby and I boat, and boaters are the same way! There was the day (when we still trailered the boat) I was backing the trailer onto the ramp (with the boat on it) and these two men came over to "direct" me - apparently they thought the blonde driving the big red truck needed assistance lol. They got me so confused and flustered I almost went in crooked which would have dumped the trailer, boat and all (and hubby in the boat) off the ramp and that would NOT have been pretty!

I'm so glad your kids got to experience a great camping trip. We've owned 7 different RVs in our 42 year marriage and don't regret a minute we spent trave!ing and camping! Tell Tom thank you for helping that older couple out. We were all newbies at some point. I love how helpful and friendly campground folks are. I have no issues pulling the rv and going alone when my husband has to work because I know someone will be there to help me out.

Ahhhh.... the dreaded sewer pump-out! We've been RVing for many years, but my husband was not expecting our sewer vent to be blocked with Lady Bugs... not the nice, ones! (You can look this up.) Anyway, when he began pumping, sewage shot up the pipe and all over the top and sides of our motorhome... AND my husband. I handed him sanitary wipes and after he washed his hands, I handed him clean clothes and his shower bag to go take a shower... NOT in our RV.
And last year we had an exciting experience pumping out our sailboat after a 3 week cruise. We had to wait for the boat ahead of us, and got to smell the wafting aroma from his boat first. Then my husband rolled the portable tank over to our boat and began pumping. It was pretty gross, because we'd never pumped out using a tank that you could see through before. The tank was already half full from the previous boaters, and I watched the level rise as my husband began pumping our sewage out. The pump made a funny noise, stopped, and then resumed pumping. However, this time I could see the sewage level dropping instead of rising. It took a moment to think, "No, this is not good!" It was nasty enough to see our own sewage rising in the portable tank, but to see the machine pumping the other boat's sewage INTO our tank was disgusting. Good thing I was watching, since hubby had his eye on the hose and not the tank. I stopped him before our tank burst, and the marina owners brought us a different pump to use.

😀 Enjoyed this very much, the views were amazing! Happy the truck gave no problems! You’re kiddos are so cute!
So I know “less is more” however I’ve found with a camper having a set of items we use regularly stored in the RV helpful.
Toiletries, soap, shampoo, bath and beach towels, sheets specifically for the RV beds, for adults a set of clothes (2 days worth), a light jacket, kitchen items, even some canned or dry food items that will store well. It’s a pain in the beginning but knowing these things are already packed/stored and a simple trip checklist to ☑️ off items from it just made life and trips less trouble and more relaxing. Also I tend to double make meals, freeze one that can be reheated, especially for long trips helped so much after traveling all day. Just my .02.

I had a good laugh when you talked about planning for cold weather ….. we (husband, 16 yr old granddaughter and I) helped a family move from Florida to Utah several years ago in July. Since we were going to be relatively close, our plan was to head to Idaho to visit friends and over to Yellowstone before heading back home. We left hot weather and hit snowstorms! Our Florida blood thought we were never going to get warm again but just like you, I hit the thrift store and was able to find jackets etc for all so our family can definitely relate. In fact I packed all gear and put it in our rig “just in case” because you never know. LOL - Lynn

I almost felt like I was there with you. 🏕🌋You make such good videos, the editing is beautiful you take enough time to show us all what you're doing what you're talkin about where you are what you see and talking with the kids. It's just very entertaining, very comforting at this time, very enjoyable. Thank you so much and keep the videos coming. One question, do you take your dog with you on trips! We have three little fur babies that I'll say I may be a little high maintenance? They need a little more attention and care when it comes to their feeding and they get nauseous on car trips sometimes so it's a little hard for us to get away when we don't have anyone to watch them. Anyway thank you, my sixteen-year-old daughter and I really enjoy your videos❤ and my husband enjoys Tom's shop and projects around the house Fix-It videos!😁 I just also have to say your videos with Diana are very inspirational very comforting and funny and helpful so I very much appreciate that as well. It was so awesome to see how much he got out of that class. We did a self guided driving tour and at one stop there was a group with a tour guide and our son was telling us what he knew about the site (Devil's den where the most deaths in the war happened) and the tour guide told him he would make an excellent guide he was very knowledgeable .

What use to drive me crazy when camping was a zillion kids ending up in our camper. Stranger danger goes completely out the window with some people and they are more than happy for their kids to enter other campers near and far. I would constantly be the meanie asking them to go back to their parents. My kids would be grumpy as I had sent their ‘best new friends’ on their way..lol

In our bunk house we got rid of the "closet" and stacked sterilite drawers to the ceiling. We did 2 wide and 9 high and anchored them to the wall. It give great storage for all the kids clothes and stuff and it doesn't weigh very much. We also removed the front panel from the jackknife couch and added drawers. It's so much easier to get the storage out.

It was fun seeing your kids work around the table in the camper as we once did the same. We had basically the same camper with the exception of the bunk room having a slide as well. Even with that additional space, the storage was terrible! At one time we spent six weeks living in it while waiting to close on our new home!! I always wanted to rip out that U shaped table and reconfigure that space but my hubby was totally against it! haha... There is so much potential space there and you two strike me as the couple to figure it out.

We too seem to have vehicles crap out on us every time we want to go camping :'( We just bought our first camper last summer (we call an RV that you tow a "trailer" here in Washington state - a "camper" is the mini RV that fits on the bed of a pickup truck, what do you call those?). I found your other videos about remodeling your first camper & it was very fun to see all that you've done. The funny thing is a hybrid trailer is my dream trailer (I have good memories of tent camping but want conveniences of a trailer) but our 17 year old son is 6'5" and the interior of most trailers hovers around that same height, so we had to go with a "toy hauler" even though we don't have any "toys" (motorcycles, ATV, etc.) because their interior height is huge!
