Hi Dawn I really appreciate all your videos. My husband is an engineer and obviously does not share the eyes of a designer, he kept making fun of my purist / perfectionist / type-A attitude toward everything... until I showed him a couple of your TH-cam videos... Now he is on board! Although I'm a more of a 🐞 and he is a 🦋.... Having him on board makes a word of difference in my life!! I'm loving it. Thank you so much, Dawn !!!!
Btw, I went to Architecture school for 5 years... And I have always been a passionate organiger. My husband and I are highschool sweethearts. Both of us recently finished grad schools and currently live in a one bedroom apartment ... now our apartment is much more peaceful and efficient to work from home as we have less stuff to manage.
Love all your minimalist tips! 💕💕💕

Great videos! I have a question: Please expound on the laundry room bins. Why is there a bin for socks for each kid, etc.? My assumption was this is where clean clothes go, maybe to be matched up/put away by family members. Just wondering the reason to see if it might work for us. We have a closet that is a laundry room / pantry / mud room / coat closet / entry way.
      Thanks for the tips!

Dawn. Where do I begin? My husband died last year at 52. We had just moved into a new home a month prior. The house is not smaller but configured differently. Getting rid of our things made every day feel like another funeral. Finding your channel helped me let go of rooms of stuff. Not just boxes, ROOMS. I am no longer feeling guilty about letting it go. Your words about the season you are in made so much sense! I got rid of everything that did not fit my cabinets, my containers and two moving boxes full of clothes.
Today I'm taking a break from purging and hanging curtains in my son's game room. I have been doing improvements that are achievable to remind all of us to look forward and remember life holds more for us, even without dad.
Thank you Dawn for being the friend I needed. ❤

I just had my a-ha moment.
I spent the whole video thinking well anyone could be organised in such a huge house with so many cupboards. Then I actually did the mathematics converted feet to meters, paced out the size of my house, and discovered that our houses are the same size.
The difference is the inventory. Thank you for sharing your real struggles with this. It is too easy to filter for perfection watching minimalism videos on TH-cam. This moment has made me want to take charge of my mess.

I noticed the guitar in your girls room in front of the furnace vent. I just wanted to mention that the dry air from the furnace can actually dry out the guitar and cause it too crack. Guitars can be hung from a wall quite simply by the neck with a guitar hook and that might be safer in your small safe. It's also always recommended to have a humidifier for your guitar. Guitar humidifiers are sponges housed in plastic placed either in the cavity or over the hole completely. Minnesota having similar weather to my Canada home, I thought it worth mentioning! Please ignore me if I made the wrong assumption, just wanted to help! Thanks so much for an awesome and informational video, I really love your content! Thank you!

Learning about this really is life changing, not just knowing my style, but understanding my Butterfly hubby and how I've been fighting a losing battle by tucking things out of sight. I'd rather have an open basket or hook he can throw things on than have it all dropped on the floor or furniture. Ahh, compromise.

Yay Corbin! You have a lovely home, Dawn. Great to see the kids outside. One thing I wonder about is not having books on shelves that kids can see and reach. Books in homes promotes reading. I know your kids have books and read on their devices, but as a reading specialist, I know it's important for kids to see those books, and have easy access to them. It's very different from having reading material on devices. Thanks for the video. I enjoy each one as they come out.

A great tip I picked up from working in resthomes -keep the toaster, breadboard, bread and butter plates, a few knives and favourite spreads on a large tray and you just lift everything out of pantry or cupboard together and shove back as needed or keep on end of bench tidy and organised. Also keep baking ingredients in large bin, condements in same container ect. Lift in and out of cupboards as needed. No searching for things people might have stuck in stupid places and no running back and forward putting everything away after use. Wooden trays are easy to make and low sided plastic containers great in cupboards, fridge, bathroom, everywhere. Super great for messy people who struggle to put everything away after use.

I recently had a minimizing victory. Last friday my mom called at 8 am and said she was on her way over to visit. She lives 3 hours away. I already had made plans that morning so I had 30 minutes to get the kids ready and now have the house picked up for company. I got off the phone and looked around... piece of cake...my house was easy to get ready because of decluttering so much of our stuff! Still have work to do but it was an encouraging moment. Thanks Dawn!

I’m going one step further, as my husband and I are seniors, I’m going to put a little short bench seat inside the closet to sit on when we put on and take off our shoes. what I do is I put my tablet which I use as my alarm clock on the other side of the room so I have to get out of my bed to turn it off so I don't just hit the snooze button and go back to sleep and for my water I put it in a insulated cup. sometimes I'll put it on the floor next to my bed but my baseboard has a swirly design so I can use the swirls as a hook and I hang up the Cup by its handle

    • @unitedheartsamerica5924

You could put bed pockets on the side of bed if you want to get rid of the nightstand. You could craft them out of pillowcases that match your sheets as the top layer of fabric. You could also take a woven throw rug, fold up to make a pocket, sew, and then tuck the other end under mattress. Voila! A pillow sham could do the same so it matches.

We are a family of 7 living in a mobile home (for now)😉, and I have found the best space saver is using shallow bins under the beds for clothes instead of dressers! Thank you, Cas and thank YOU, Dawn, for the tips and tricks to handle paper clutter. My desk is always neat and nothing gets buried, lost or (worse) shoved in a bag or box to be handled "later". When I first started dating my now husband, I went over to help him get ready for a cookout that he was hosting. Honestly I was horrified that the house wasn't "ready" and didn't know what to do and he was outside mowing the yard so he wasn't there to ask. I opened a cabinet to see if they was even a little room that I could use to clean things up- because for me that means putting things away- and it was EMPTY, so were the closets. In 15 minutes I had everything put away, dishes going through a cycle in the dishwasher and I felt great. Twenty years later, we still have different organizational styles, but we make it work.

I am a ladybug too. At home we are pretty light on "stuff". We park both of our cars in our garage and we have no sheds or storage units. So I think that's pretty significant. I am also an elementary school teacher with a LOT of stuff. Some teachers like small drawers labeled with each item "pencils, erasers, iPad chargers" etc. I like big shoe boxes that I label "extra supplies, tech supplies". I need broader categories and it helps me stay really organized. Pull out tech bin, shove in Webcam, move on. I like boxes and bins for shoving stuff into. I also have a "put away" bin that I clean out and organize on Friday afternoons before I go to make sure everything is put away for the next week. Then I do a big purge and reorganization of areas that aren't working at the end of the school year.
