My absolute favourite bushcraft channel on TH-cam! Thanks for another great video
Great list. Thanks for sharing.
Just finished watching your schrade video
Great video, so many awesome blades! That TOPS lineup is incredible
EveryDay Knife Guy They are sweet!
Simply the Best Review I have ever seen. You are not stuck on one manufacturer and that is so refreshing for a change an honest video.
Steven Bell Thanks so much!
Once again, great review. You're the reason I have purchased my last two. Esee 5 and Survive GSO 4.1. Now I'm on to an EDC and trying to narrow it down and have landed on the BK11. What are your thoughts on that particular knife? I like beer so the pommel cap opener would definitely see some use.
Thank you very verymuch Aaron, just needed this this monday!
The vids are great, keep em up!
You have great taste in blades Aaron, I couldn't agree more with the line up you recommend! Once again, thank you sir!
It is getting towards the end of the year, are you going to do one for 2015 as well? They had a lot of great new brands and models that came out that I have used EDC.
Good to see a summary of your 2014 consideration for the best fixed blades. Look forward to seeing the mods to the BK16. Been looking at one. Haven't pulled the trigger yet.
Look forward to seeing the same vid but with the best 2014 folders.
The BK-16 is the best bang for your buck for a bushcraft/companion blade.
For camping and activities in that category and for my hunting pack should I get the silent hero or wolf pax 2?
Great to see the marks of regular use. You must have a great life, dude. As do I! Congrats on a great year, you really are getting on the radar in the community.
CedricAda Gear Reviews Thanks so much!
Hey, What made you decide to go back to the original scales for the ESEE 6 over your custom ones from theknifeconnection?
seeing those screws all lined up at 2:40 is immensely satisfying
I have the Junglas, the Silent Hero, and the Guardian 4... soon to have the Esee 6. I absolutely LOVE these blades. Watched every single review you did on each, and appreciate the work you did to inform everyone on the pros & cons. Now just need to learn how to sharpen these things so as not to discredit the brands.. suggestions?
deckard9732 I use a combination of the spyderco sharpmaker and the worksharp field sharpener. Those two will do everything you need.
gideonstactical Much obliged!
I just bought the ESEE 6 and Izula 2 based your videos. Thank you. I am stoked.
Awesome vid bud. Very informational! Have several of these awesome blades!
where would I get micarta handles for my bk9? like yours
Great review again Aaron ! Where did you ordered your kydex sheath for your BK-2 ?
AZWELKE? Or somebody else ? Because i'm looking forward to upgrade mine to ! ;)
Great vid! I've got a few of them myself! Keep up the good work!
Great Job ! could you list all these knives mentioned within this video ?
I would like to try a Survive Knife but they seem hard to find.
There are a lot of great TOPS Knives. The only thing I don't like about the Fieldcraft is the jimping. I might have to grind that down.
My favorite Becker is my BK10 which I removed the thumb ramp from. It's one of the best all-around survival knives I have found.
The ESEE CM6 and Izula II are a great combination. I am not that fond of my Junglas though. Something about the handle is not quite right for me.
where did you get the scales for the bk9?
Love the channel and your reviews are awesome. I'm definitely subscribed and been wondering what type of utility pack is that you are wearing on your chest for your field videos? Your channel is an inspiration for mine. Keep up the good work!
Lynwoodsfinest Thanks for the support. The Hill People Kit Bag, there is a review in my gear review playlist.
Great review ! You are my man when I am looking for a new knife, just ordered my first Tops knife Iraq Jac and I am really digging the Schrade Schf series of knives as of late. They are great quality for the price point !
Troy Manor Glad to hear it!
I'm always going to carry a hatchet or small forest axe, do you think I should get a large knife for mainly batoning?
Why would you beat on your knife when you have an axe?
Great review Aaron, Great Knives, F.Y.I. you can mod. A Swamp Rat at the Custom Shot at Swamp Rat, I just had the Rodent 6 Customized by them, I like a slicer so I had my Rodent 6 thinned down and I also had the top gaurd taken off and now it look's like a beefy Ratmandu on steriods, I didn't like the tactical look by removing the top gaurd it came out looking great, infact as much as I like the Ratmandu and I have two one in INFI Steel, one in the SR101, my new Rodent 6 is my fav. 6" blade, it's a robust knife that I can trust my life on it, and still do everything I need to do not only at camp but in the bush, but those G.S.O.'s you hooked me with them, they are next in my agenda, Thanx Aaron.
paulie 4x The GSO blades are sweet!
Aaron:
I agree with most of your comments.
The 3.5 inch D2 tool steel knife.
The Mora Conpanion HD
The Mora bushcraft Black
The Marttiini
Now let's talk about the Toos BOB.
Great blade length 4.5 inches
Great blade thickness 3/16 inch so you know you can beat on it without fail.
Great differential heat treatment
Great scales.
Decent Kydex sheath.
Incredible edge on that Scandi grind.
However in my thoughts the knife . The knife as it comes is AWFUL for bushcraft unless you do three mods.
1. Ditch the stupid ferro rod and exchange for another 5/16 inch ferro rod. The Exotac Fire steel with aluminum housing for tinder is a perfect fit. Run some 1/8 inch shock cord through the hole in the top of the aluminum container and loop over the ferro rod it works great.
2. The BOB does NOT HAVE A 90 degree spine so you need to grind the spine down.
3. I carry a carbide steel scraper but just in case it would be nice to be able to scrape the ferro rod with the spine of the knife.
Tops made the Shango notch to scrape ferro rods but it is WORTHLESS.
A. Using the Shango notch is awkward.
B. the Shango notch does not work because of that bleeping coating.
In brief the three mods the BOB NEEDS ARE.
A. Replace the ferro rod
B. Grind a 99 degree spine
C. Strip the bleeping coating!
And the jimping sucks: hurts so much that I am amazed how such design came into being. Too heavy for what it is. Amazingly, the "changoing" is great with a Falkie, the problem being the rubber handle. Good idea, lousy execution by TOPS. I prefer the Mora BB by a long margin.
Buy your #3 for every fire rod you own and use them instead of the spine of your knife. Then if you buy a coated / non 90 blade you don't have to mod it.
shcmoly Agree, but 90deg is still useful for scraping; saves the edge.
Love the channel, looking for a new knife, I'm thinking the Rat7, Cold Steel SRK, Bk7, or the Ka Bar 1213?
Which one do you think?
great recommendations man, great vid, my Mora bushcraft black is already on the way. trying to get up the cash for a Junglas, BTW Esee has released the junglas in new colors fairly recently, "dark earth" with a dark tan finish of the blade, and "gunsmoke" with a much lighter gray blade, similar color to the Tops shangos. keep it real man
Macho Deth Thanks so much, I like the dark earth color for sure.
gideonstactical will you check out swamp rat knives? I think i get there large one and the 6 inch one.
Dumb question, but what does "GSO" stand for?
Good revue. A man I have the Ontario Rat 7 what do you think of it in comparison to the ESEE 6? Thanks .Have a Good one. Tyler
Tyler Murphy They are very similar, i had the RAT7, but sold it to get the ESEE6. I am glad I did.
+gideonstactical I have the ESSE 5 but it's just so damn heavy. The ESSE 6 is on my list.
Great video my sp51 was stolen in Vermont while we were camping at the state park was my best woods blade I have a bushlore but miss the size of that Ontario
hi in your opinion, would you recommend a gerber bear grylls ultimate survival knife or a Schrade Schf10? i'm just starting out and They're both around the same price. PLease reply
*****
ok thanks
Best channel. Best blades.
Rodrigo Freitas Thanks so much!
Why do you prefer the S7 vs the CPM 3V steel for the GSO blade?
Colby Phillipps The CPM 3V, but the S7 is a good second.
Hey, what are your thoughts on the Tops silent hero's blade steel? Does it require a lot of maintaining?
alealeale ale No, it is great.
Thanks! Great channel btw keep it up!
Hi What would you recommend for a medium survival knife? Also what would you recommend for a chopper?
+cam m ESEE6 and ESEE Junglas, you have those two knives and you will never need another.
great vid :) i think u missed the habilis bushtools series though. maybe u should look into that.
if u got some time review some backpacking saws. i am very interested in what you would use for heavy duty tasks since they stopped making the sawvivor :)
pro Toyz I plan on some saw reviews coming soon.
awesome! i expect good things :)
i have a gso 4.1 in m390 and was looking for a big knife to go with it under $180. what would you recommend?
He recommended the ESEE Junglas above. That is a great large knife in your budget.
Have you got your hands on a GSO 5.1 or plan to?
Kyle Davidson I am holding out for the Survive SK-5 which will be a carbon copy of the GSO 5.1 just with S7 steel. Knives that have a cutting edge of 5" or less I prefer no choil. That is why I bought the GSO 5.
Season's Greeting Aaron, recently going out for a hot cup of coffee on a open fire, beat's going to Mc Dee's, it doesn't get any better, my favorite go to set besides my Busse's, are my Swamp Rat's, the Ratmandu leading the pack, and the Rodent 7 being my favorite survival knife, on serious trips the Rodent 9 is always on my backpact, anyhow, one of my favorite chopper's is the Gen2 SP-53, although recently for a hot cup in the wood's, I've been increasing my skill's, and experimenting, I'm using a mid size field knife, like my Bokor Plus Vox Rold, mine's in black, a Wicked Tree Gear Tough Folding Saw, you must do a video on this saw Aaron, it's as tough as nail's, and it cut's in both directions, and you can lite chop with it, great saw, and a Trapper Double Bit Hatchet from 2Hawks, but the advantage I see with the SP-53 over the hatchet, I can baton wood easier with the SP-53 especially small kindling, I don't mind being redundant with some tool's because it saves on my edge retention, great video, I always enjoy your stuff, incidently some great knives, and yes a saber grind work's best for me too, and I'm liking a choil now, it's like two knife size's in one, again, Merry Christmas. Good Job.
Hey Aaron. No love for the Tops HOG 4.5? What do you think of the HOG vs BK16? Worth the extra for the HOG?
Ruster Kat That was the struggle for me the more I used the hog. Great knife, but when you own the BK16 and the BOB they can do everything the hog can.
what is that big fixed on the intro with the green micarta handle
***** SURVIVE KNIVES GSO -10
NOT IN PRODUCTION AT THE MOMENT :(
***** Ha im in canada luck has nothing to do with it ill see one in two years when these arent popular any more :P
Outstanding review. Thanks for the concise description. Feliz Navidad!
Carlos Sepulveda Thanks so much!
I see the Buck Thug has change the blade profile to a full flat grind and as of right now can be had for around $90. With the blade change and price change would you still recommend spending the extra money on the TOPS DART which has been around $150 lately.
hmbeal Yes I would. The sheaths are both junk, but the ergos are much better on the DART and the DART is heavier so better chopping. With that said, for $90 the Thug is not a bad blade if that is your price point, but the DART will serve you better.
gideonstactical
Thanks for the reply. While I have no problem paying the $150 for a quality knife I think I will give the Thug a try first. I have never tried a knife out with a curve that the Thug and DART have and am not sure if it will be to my liking. If the Thug is something that I like its good to know that the DART will be that much better. Thanks again for the reply and for sharing your experience with the gear you test on your channel.
Are there any good Damascus steel blades out there?
jlair I do not know of any good Damascus fixed blades.
If you want a good damscus, you're gonna have to go the custom route. (And the expensive route...). If yoh just want a damascus blade, go to your local gun shows. At the one I go to, there's always these two Indian sellers with separate stands selling only damscus blades. I'm sure the knives were mass produced in Pakistan or something, but the couple that I've gotten from those guys look and work pretty nice.
the Becker bk-9 is just awesome, its been years i carry this knife and for the price its just (no words!)
DARN GOOD VIDEO AARON. I love all those knives & own most of the ones under $150 price range u showed! Man, many of these knives are good for skinning & tactical use as well. I love knives that can do more than one thing! And, I'm a huge fan of ESEE & I live near knifeworks so I visit the place frequently! Gotten to know most of the staff & they are great people & patient.. ;)
I bring a list every time I go all I have to write is the item # & they go pull all the knives I want to check out. I want a SURVIVE! blade but can't afford right now. I'm also digging that Bradford Guardian 4. Did u know ESEE came out with 440C versions of the Izula & 4? Peace bro & always a fan of ur channel. I know lots of my friends & I really respect u & ur opinions!
why is the esee 6 not in your what to buy list?
Really? 10:32
+sean levis sorry i dont speak english i am from germany i think if you hear a german text you dont understand everything...
MEGA REVIEW! I love your TOPS and ESEE picks!
Hi Aaron, tanks a lot for your vids as they're very helpful and interesting. Your opinion lead me to buy my ESEE 6 and I'm still very happy about it.
I also bought recently a Fällkniven A1 which, I think, is a great bushcraft/survival blade. I would appreciate having your opinion about it. Do you know that company and that model particularly?
Thanks again, keep doing a great job and we'll stay equipped and prepared;)
Survive! Knvies are out of stock everywhere :(
BladeHQ has them.
??? Every single one is out of stock at BHQ brother
Living Survival try "knifeworks" "smokey mountain knifeworks" "knifesupply" "knivestown" or "knifedepot" they won't be matching their prices to each other but maybe you'll have luck with what your looking for.
They've been slammed right before Christmas.
Amazon might have some, I just bought my SOG SEAL Pup there yesterday.
wow very nice love my fixed blades..
In your opinion.... what makes the esee 6 better than the bk2
dragon3831 Watch my video on What makes a good survival knife and you will see.
What are the pants that you're wearing at the end of the video?
+OptimalNeo42 I use columbia pants when I am out in the woods. Different styles but that are all good!
Ok thanks. I was mainly drawn to them b/c it looks like there's some sort of knee protection there and that it is a part of the pants.
in the UK we call our boxer shorts and y-fronts pants , so for a moment there I thought you were asking him what underwear he had on lol we those trousers over here :) and we can't even carry a Stanley knife \box cutter here unless we have a reason IE in a plumbers work bag or something if I got caught even with a scalpel I would get lifted and spend time in the cells and maybe go prison
Have you ever tested leukus?
Great video Aaron. Collecting knives is so addicting, I'm spending money on knives I would never had thought I'd spend. I'm still trying to recover from my Spyderco Rubicon purchase, $305. That hurt just typing that. Keep that good stuff coming Aaron, peace and have a great Christmas and holiday season. Mike
Michael Quigley Thanks Mike!
No schrades?
Enjoyable vid as always. I am torn between an Esee Izula 2 and an Esee 3. I see you have Izula as a keeper and Izula 2 as a purchase. I wear extra large gloves and worry that Izula 2 will be too small. I'd appreciate your opinion.
The Izula2 with micarta handle scales will fit well in your XL size hands. I have a side by side video of the two in my Esee playlist on my channel home page. You will get more use out of it the an esee3 in my opinion. Thanks for the supply hope that helps.
gideonstactical Thanks for the reply. It does help. Once again, thanks for the vids. They are always informative and entertaining.
Awesome review! I know what I am buying now hahah I buy two a week. One fixed one folder.
Hope your working on best of 2016 soon:) love your channel bud
I can't argue any of your picks lol :) God Bless brother :D
Fantastic video, albeit it didn't mention the best fixed blades available, the Bark River series. Would have been good to see the underrated and misunderstood DPx HEST Original as well, but I'll pretend the budget edition Izula is a nod to it.
Great video! In my opinion you can't go wrong getting a knife from Tops or ESEE! My silent hero never leaves my side!God bless !
I haven't seen you do any video of Habilis knives ???
keep up the good work.
I wonder why you don't recommend more laminated blades. As they are way more durable than single steel blades. Specially since durability is a big issue in a wilderness/survival scenario.
First of all, in his defense, there are relatively very few laminated knives in this category, Fallkniven and Cold Steel are about the only brands that come to mind.
Secondly, laminated blades are not always more durable, that would depend on what exactly you mean by durable.
Corrosion resistant?
Resistant to chipping edges?
Resistant to rolling edges?
Resistant to bending?
Resistant to breaking?
Every steel will be a trade off in each of the above and while having 2 steels laminated together may seem to be superior than a single steel that just isn't true.
Fallkniven for example, use a 420J/VG10 laminate with the VG10 being the sandwiched edge steel taken to a higher hardness for edge holding but that higher hardness trade off is an edge that will chip out easier than an equally hard and edge holding basic high carbon steel.
The cheaper, softer 420J, while softer than the VG10 and therefore tougher(more resistant to breaking) may still not be as tough as a basic high carbon 1095 with a differential heat treat.
Therefore, the Tops knives shown here using 1095 or the Survive! 3V blades both should be tougher, stronger and more chip/roll resistant than any stainless laminate.
What you get with the Fallkniven is corrosion resistance far superior to the non stainless knives mentioned while still having exceptional toughness just not to the same level as non stainless blades.
Bottom line is laminated does not always mean more durable and it depends on what exactly you mean by durable.
Each kind of steel offers specific strengths and weaknesses. A laminate attempts to mitigate this using 2 kinds of steels but still cannot be "more durable " in ANY absolute sense unless that is a specific definition such as corrosion resistance but there is no such thing as a knife that is more durable because it's laminated, not that I know of.
Sure it's pros n cons. Chipping the blade is not kool. But snapping it of braking it. In a survival scenario, that's a much bigger problem.
Yes am talking about braking the knife in two. A single steel knife can't out perform a well done laminated one.
You know that they have tested this, pure braking strength. Yes Fallkniven.
Not a sr101 fan?
when the buck navy seal knife comes out you should definitly buy it, its actually very high quality.
Esee 6 or tops bob?
Jarett McKown survival the Esee 6, bushcraft the BOB
gideonstactical thanks
Great job man. You should be hosting your own show on cable. Let me ask you this though. Hypothetically speaking, let's say the zombie apocalypse hits or we were attacked by an emp.... or you were just going to be on a show like naked and afraid.... and you could only choose one knife to rule them all and take with you, which one would it be?
lumberjack20 ESEE6, watch my review on how to pick out a survival knife.
do you know about the Jordan Production Raptor Knife? what is your view on it...
the only fixed blade i want...
lee radio The design looks functional
Excellent.
can´t wait too see that bk16 after you are done with it ! :)
gideonstactical surprised to see you went with the GSO 5 over the 5.1 that has the choil.
Bradley Cole I don't like choils until the blade is over 6"
What your opinion on cold steel as a company I heard that they have a lot of hate
Ryan Ho They make some every tough pocket knives, I have not been super impressed with a lot of their fixed blades. The SRK and the Master Hunter are good.
gideonstactical any chance to test some cold steel machetes after sharpening them of course(they're notorious for their out of the sharpness but great bang for the buck)
They are MIND BLOWING :-)
great picks, can not disagree on ya choices sir :)
u may have already but have a look at the gerber lmf2
lamacorn Jr Yes and I was not impressed. I am about to get my hands on the new Gerber Strongarm. We will see if that is better.
I'm a big fan of the products Schrade has brought to the table these past few years. Surprised that they didn't even get an honorable mention, lol.
Adirondack Patriot Schrade makes some good knives, but these are the great knives. I think that might change with the Brian Griffin SCHF42. It looks awesome.
Im sure its been addressed, but the GSO knives are NEVER in stock!! Yeah they're kinda pricey but I'd buy the GSO 10 in a heartbeat. EVERY time I've been to the surviveknives.com website NOTHING is ever in stock. Thanks for the vid, I have a good amount of knives you've reviewed.
Thank you for the videos and Happy Bill of Rights Day.
Thanks!
Aaron, great, great video. thanks a million man. Now if only santa could get me the ESEE 6. and next year, the Silent Hero.
David Mazo Right on!
Obviously the best fixed blade is the ka-bar USMC. Used by the Marine Corps, hasnt changed since it was first made in the 40's for WW2, and it looks sexy
The USMC Kabar is good but is simply not in the same league as modern knives due to one simple fact, it uses a "rat tail" tang rather than "full tang" construction.
There are plenty of stories on the internet of those knives failing under hard use that most full tang designs would never have issue with.
It's still a relatively good knife and a classic but I would not recommend it as a "survival" knife due to its design.
Ian Boomsma KABAR doesn't make the knife. Ontario does.
Still eagerly awaiting that CS Warcraft Tanto review Gideon, ETA??
I am waiting to see if CS comes out with a clip or drop point blade option at shot show this year, since I would prefer that blade shape to the Tanto.
you missed my "Gun".
1917 Frontier Bowie
its the blade you bring to the gun-fight
I've got to get me hands on the Tops Bob knife. Been eyeballing it for years and hear nothing but good things about it. Interesting to hear the comparison between the shango vs the bob. Also interested in the Silent hero. Great list. Now I'm going to go ogle my fixed blades ; )
Haha, nothing better then ogleing your blades from time to time.
Bk2 is only 1oz lighter than bk9. That is just ridiculous.kind of like an axe but without the handle to take advantage of the giant wedge.
ghost banshee or no
you know what has been driving me nuts? know one has seemed to review the TOPS operator 7! its one thick bitch! please oh please review it!
what's your favorite one of them all?
***** Thank is like asking which is your favorite kid. I can't say. Out of all that are on this list, they have different uses and capabilites. You have to decide what you want out of your knife and then that will help you deside what knife is best for you.
gideonstactical Thanks Aaron. I picked up the ESEE-6 yesterday but am now already thinking about what the next one will be.
I think I'm the only person on Earth that doesn't like the TOPS BOB....Had it, used it, hated it and gave to it a friend.
oh did I mention these choppers are good knives?
I like your taste!
robert mullins Thanks!
i don´t understand why almost every one call the Tops Fieldcraft the "Tops BOB"..... It´s like you calling the Shango XL the "Tops Joe" It´s not the name of the knife. You did say all the others knives names . Just saying...
I love these videos, why do Americans feel the need to repeat the same statements over and over..... I get the impression you like these knives. do you feel Like repeating yourself some more... good knives? great knives... these knifes are great... great are these knives.... do you realise just how good these knives are..... only the best knives.... good knives... only the best good knives that are great and best
The more you hear it, the more you'll believe it? I don't know.
your dog is cute...
why do you survival / bushcraft guys never clean your blades?
Informative knife porn. Win-win!
